The Met Gala is on Monday! So just keep it in mind, on Tuesday we will be knee-deep in fashion coverage. A few years past, CB remarked that the Met Gala turnout was way better than the Oscar turnout that year, and she was right. I think this year will be on par with the Oscars, maybe even a let-down. I don’t think Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are going to be there (so sad). I don’t know if Beyonce and Jay-Z have RSVP’d either. And now comes the confirmation that Gwyneth Paltrow refuses to attend this year’s Met Gala as well! OH NOES.
In the wake of her “conscious uncoupling” from Chris Martin and whispers that her beloved lifestyle Web site is $1 million in debt, Gwyneth Paltrow will be a no-show at the May 5 Met Gala.
“Gwyneth will not be in New York and is unable to attend the ball,” her rep told Threads.
But don’t cry for Gwynnie. Sources say the perennial attendee was, in fact, invited to the event, even though she slammed it during a tipsy interview last May. Paltrow appeared on an Australian radio show, and after admitting she was “drunk already,” declared of the posh soiree: “It sucked. You always think, ‘Oh my god, it’s gonna be so glamorous and amazing and you’re going to see all these people,’ and then you get there and it’s so hot and it’s so crowded and everyone’s pushing you.”
But sources say designers still invited the goop.com founder to be a guest at their table, and a Vogue rep told Threads the magazine “is always happy to have Gwyneth attend the Met Gala.”
If you remember, Gwyneth’s attendance at last year’s Met Gala was a complete and utter catastrophe. First of all, she wore that fug Valentino dress. Then Chris Martin attended but he refused to pose for photos with her, even with people inside the tent. Then Goop deigned to declare the Met Gala the most “un-fun” thing ever. Then she called herself “literally a transvestite.” Then everyone said that she had terrible body odor, like a peasant. Then Chloe Sevigny had the nerve to mock Gwyneth’s tantrums. All in all, Gwyneth had the worst Met Gala experience ever. It makes sense that she doesn’t want to go this year, although I will miss her. We were writing stories about her for like a month afterward. She was the goop that kept giving, gossip-wise.
Speaking of Goop Giving, she posted this photo this week, tagging it: “spring cleaning @goop #goopgiving”. Um, is she giving away those purses? I’ll take one!

The Met Gala is probably going to suck this year. Jennifer Lawrence is off promoting X-Men and will be a no show most likely. Beyonce and Jay Z probably aren’t going to show because of tour commitments, imo. Miley (yes, I know people love to hate her but her fashion is amusing at times) is also on tour. Marion Cotillard is filming I believe….and now no Goopy.
It really does sound like it’s going to suck this year.
Maybe it’ll be filled with FASHION, not tacky celebrity guests. Looking forward to it.

So Benny is going well over the top now! I’m just buying his interest in fashion shows, other than another PR exercise. He gets himself papped at a restaurant opening and now here. Time he started working, again. He could be filming a Sherlock special right now.
He could be, but Freeman might not be available, or some/any of the crew. Not sure if they’ve even written anything.
It could be a work trip to meet with casting agents, who knows but I get him going to be honest, he has nothing on and if he’s been invited why not go. He’s not that well known in the US, he’ll get photographed and get some more networking done. He’s a quiet enough 2014 (compared to 2012 and 2013) so he needs to get himself out there and get some stuff lined up.
It may not be everyone’s idea of what he should be doing but he smacks of someone that can’t sit still for 5 minutes so if things are quiet, he goes to things like this and gets to meet people. If he poses with Kim though, I would be horrified.
The Met gala is exactly what I thought when I saw those airport pictures. Especially when I read that the theme this year was white tie and that men were expected to wear tails, waistcoats and top hats. A waistcoat is practically the Cumberbatch bat-signal. (Cumberbatch-signal?)
As for Sherlock – I’m pretty sure Gatiss and Moffat have admitted that there are no scripts. They are writing for Doctor Who and Gatiss is filming a movie right now and I swear I read that he’d been cast in the Wolf Hall miniseries – although imdb doesn’t show it.
Mayhem, it was the 2 large suitcases that made me think Met Gala. This from a man who wears pretty much the same clothes on a loop, it seemed like a lot of clothes for him to have brought for a trip.
Looking at the theme, its like it was made for him. He’ll rock it if he’s there and he’s looking really bloody well lately.

@Lindy – just saw some pictures from a film party and he’s wearing the same airport outfit, leading me to concur with your suitcase theory. His top hat and tails takes up so much room he had to wear all his other clothes on the plane and for the rest of his visit.

I think the Met Ball like American Vogue used to be something special. Now I think Vogue might as well be a bigger version of People and the Met Ball will let just about anyone in. Nothing is special about that.
