Has George Clooney asked Amal Alamuddin to sign a (generous) prenup?

wenn20606424

As you might have seen in my earlier Angelina Jolie story, there’s a rumor in the National Enquirer that Angelina is pissed that George Clooney has gotten engaged to a top human rights lawyer. Angie allegedly thinks George and Amal are going to “dethrone” her as the Top Celebrity Humanitarian or something. It was a silly story, because of entrenched sexism, etc. But it was also silly because George seems to have given up part of his humanitarian efforts – he’s no longer a UN Messenger of Peace. Which is interesting. You know what’s even more interesting though? Money.

George Clooney won’t be blinded by love. The actor, who popped the question to Amal Alamuddin in April after six months of dating, is protecting his estimated $200 million fortune with an ironclad prenup. Sources say the document states that Clooney, 53, will add millions to Amal’s settlement chunk each year the pair are married. If their union lasts less than a year, she gets $1 million as a parting gift.

“George has had so many friends go through hell because of a split,” explains an insider, “He just wants to make sure that doesn’t happen to him if, God forbid, he and Amal break up.”

While many women would be upset at the mention of a prenup, Amal is on board with the decision. “She’s a very smart woman who understands the business side of a relationship. She wouldn’t expect anything less.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

Wait, Clooney is worth $200 million? I don’t think he’s worth that much. In the past, George has put up his own money to make certain films, and while it often works to his benefit, I just don’t see how he could be worth that much. I would think his net worth is probably, at most, around $80 million.

Oh, and Gossip Cop’s “source close to Clooney” says that there’s “no truth… in any way, shape or form.” But… I actually think that this makes sense…? Amal is a lawyer, one of the best lawyers in the UK. Surely she wants her assets and Clooney’s assets completely protected?

    OMG, where is O’Kitt?

  2. L. says:

That is generous! Makes you wonder what his other girlfriends really got for parting gifts.

The Incessant Love gushing of Mount Clooneyston “Her Lesser” Continues unabated!!

Now this is new – usually Clooney’s exes were the ones to be taken down by the media. This time around its Clooney who is being taken down – everything is about how Clooney going to sacrifice his work to stay in London for Amal’s career, he is willing to marry and have children etc.

Frankly I think Clooney has met his match in Amal – she is intelligent, strong and independent woman who won’t take any shit from anyone. More power to her I say.

    • maynot says:

Just wait and see. She is pretty new and she doesn’t look like gossip material. But let her walk her firts red carpet with a not-so-impressive outfit or styling and you will be served. .

      • PunkyMomma says:

She already has! Is she not wearing pantyhose with peep toes? (third pic)

    • kri says:

HAHAHAAHHA!! I would love to see this pre-nup! And I knew Clooney would be staying in London! I said it in a previous post (along w/ several others) . I’m quite sure he’s happy to be out of LA far, far away from any pool parties. And entering into a nice, tight contract with an international human rights lawyer. I do so admire this man’s game.

  5. ToodySezHey says:

It’d be dumb if he didn’t
She is a lawyer she knows what’s up

    • MonicaQ says:

And a good lawyer at that.

      • Ravensdaughter says:

        Agreed, as below!
She may have some assets of a sentimental nature-her birth family has much more status and arguably wealth than his-that she may want to hold on to.
Careful of the commingling of property -improvements, etc., if that’s the case.

  6. Lori says:

I can’t shade either of them for wanting/having a prenup.

  7. lucy2 says:

I believe he’s worth that much. He probably was getting big money on ER at the end, did a lot of big budget films, and has had success as a producer. Plus you never know what sort of investments he has too.
As for the prenup, I should hope so! Both are financially successful, and having a prenup protects both people and saves a lot of trouble and legal fees should they split. I’ve never understood why tabloids try to make pre-nups seem so terrible.

    • maynot says:

Right. Maybe in US you’re not aware of the big money he’s making from commercials around the globe. They’re huge contracts and they’re many.

    • Algernon says:

I’m with you, Lucy2. I think he probably has way more than $200 million. Celebrity Net Worth says $180 million, but that website comes up with their numbers by aggregating public financial information (like whatever is listed by Forbes when someone makes a top earners list), and I tend to think, because they don’t have access to stuff like investments, that they’re usually low-balling people.

George made a mint from ER, he made a mint from the Ocean’s movies, he makes a mint from international advertising. By this point he undoubtedly has a lucrative investment portfolio. I’d believe a $200 million fortune, easily.

    • stellax2 says:

I tend to agree also. Clooney ( i get the feeling) has made mostly wise investments from the get go. He reached fame later than some others. He also was raised in political/ journalism family with a famous aunt. He probably learned young and early of what not to do.
She’s a very prominent attorney. We cannot speculate her wealth or I choose not to. However, there are people (comes from personal experience) who are filthy rich and you’d never know.
Besides tv, film, commercials, tequila etc., who knows what other assets he has.

  8. mkyarwood says:

Meh, George is bound to consider the business aspect of marriage first. This is the lady who is (allegedly) going to carry his legacy and there is insurance involved when it comes to dudes like him with that kind of money. I am curious as to what the clauses are, though.

  9. Cora says:

Believe it or not, George is definitely worth $200 million. That figure is correct.

And, yes, I believe George will have Amal sign a prenup, but Star magazine has the reason wrong. It has nothing to do with his friends’ experiences and everything to do with his own. George lost absolutely every cent he had in his first divorce. He ended up having to sleep on Richard Kind’s couch (he lost his house and all his money) as a result of his divorce to Talia and ended up $100,000 in debt to his divorce lawyer to boot. No way he marries again without a prenup. Incidentally, he also lost millions in palimony to Celine Balitran. Clooney has been Mr. Contract ever since.

  10. Renee28 says:

With all the films George produces, he could easily be worth that much money.

  11. DanaG says:

Amal has assests and money? She lives with her mother and while she is well off she is nowhere near rich she is going to get set for life with this pre nup. After his first wife and their split costing him everything there is no way this won’t be an iron clad pre num. Amal has no choice in the matter so I love how they are trying make out she does. Amal got the ring he isn’t down the aisle yet.

    • Leen says:

I could definitely believe she is on board with the prenup. Prenups in the Middle East are common place. I don’t know anyone in the Middle East who didn’t get married without a prenup.

  12. Pari says:

@Maya – “Now this is new – usually Clooney’s exes were the ones to be taken down by the media. This time around its Clooney who is being taken down – everything is about how Clooney going to sacrifice his work to stay in London for Amal’s career, he is willing to marry and have children etc.”

Well… perhaps this is all about “raising” Amal’s standards, to make it of world-wide renown in the Arab world, using George’s notoriety, so she can be the next “Queen Rania Abdulla of Jordan”?? 🙂 OUCH!! I mean… like her, following her path, but in another Kingdom? Even an ambitious+smart Amal, however “intelligent, strong and independent” might feel the need to be portrayed as the “Angelina Jolie” who won over a Sheikh / King / Prince… after conquering the heart of a marriage-repelling George Clooney, to stand a better chance, as an asset for a Sheikh / King? Just thinking out loud… 🙂

  13. Etheldreda says:

”Amal is a lawyer, one of the best lawyers in the UK. ”

Now, I don’t claim to be an expert, but is Amal really ”one of the best lawyers in the UK”? She’s still relatively young, and from what I’ve heard, in few if any of her high-profile cases, she has not been the chief lawyer, just one of a team. Besides, she may be well-known as a ‘human rights lawyer’ – whatever that really means – but there are many sorts of lawyers: family lawyers, corporate lawyers, constitutional lawyers etc.

In any case, lawyers aren’t celebrities – usually – and I doubt many of us would know who the best lawyers are. They would only be known to the select few rich enough to be able to afford their services.

    • Francesca says:

+1 … Not knocking her skills, but that statement is a stretch.

      • Madi says:

That is a stretch considering she is still only a Junior Council and not a Queen’s Council.

It wouldn’t surprise me if she was introduced to George by his friend Mariella Frostrup who’s husband is human rights solicitor Jason McCue

    • Sixer says:

No, quite. Well she’s not on the Chambers 100 list for either silks or juniors for barristers (that’s 100 names on each list). And I don’t think she’s a silk (QC) yet, is she? So she is relatively junior in British legal terms.

Not knocking her either. But one of our elite lawyers? Nuh uh. Not yet, anyway.

    • siri says:

Dito. She has been part of teams of lawyers, not THE lawyer for Assange etc. She’s still considered a junior partner within the system. It’s the media, and of course George’s “brilliant” PR- team, that portray her as a star. So she’s not exactly poor, but also far from being filthy rich. I’m very curious what she will do regarding her work. I’m sure she can work from everywhere in general, but if you want to represent some high profile client, you have to meet up in person, not send some mails…

    • nicegirl says:

I was wondering about that myself

  14. frisbeejada says:

“She’s a very smart woman who understands the business side of a relationship,” Freudian slip, taking the pi** or what?
This story does suggest he really is gearing up to marry her and will go through with it.
I’ve been banging on that the real reason is he want’s a political career and this is stage one. I’m beginning to shift away from that. The sheer amount of stories now suggest to me he’s panicking. Now I’m thinking that maybe he is cra**ing himself (in an Original Kitten 3 ply kind of way) over some story or information that may or may not come out and is charging up the aisle to protect himself. Of course he’s going to protect himself financially, this is business after all.

    • Olenna says:

You may have something there with the preemptive strike approach. One of my friend’s in LA told me years ago that he’s not exactly a ladies’ man and that it was common knowledge. I never thought much about it afterwards because I don’t care if he is or isn’t, but something is clearly amiss with this PR frenzy.

      • frisbeejada says:

That’s the problem he’s creating for himself, he’s arousing suspicion about the engagement, about his motivations, even about his sexuality with a potentially preemptive strike that absolutely reeks of panic…

  15. Miss M says:

TOK, please release your PR statement, 🙂

  16. tracking says:

George is all about the ironclad contract, right? The whole thing screams mutually beneficial business arrangement.

  17. Decloo says:

Sorry, but if she’s going to be photographed a lot from now on she needs to up her style game. I’ve seen some very questionable shoes.

  18. EscapedConvent says:

I think the most important part of this is: George comes with that villa on Lake Como. He could be a gnarled little gnome, & he would still come with the villa on Lake Como.

Also, they will be needing a couples’ name, won’t they? I suggest “AmLooney.”

    • tracking says:

I like the joke there, but I’m sort of into “Cloonamuddin.”

    • siri says:

Both wonderful….”Muddilooney” could be another option…

    • Miss M says:

Escon, loved your suggestion. May I suggest one too? LoonAl

      • EscapedConvent says:

Miss M! I really like this! Their couples’ name is going to be lots of fun whatever it is, because of the wonderful “Looney” component.

        These jokes will write themselves….:-)

  19. cody says:

LOL-Talking about life imitating art. This reminds me of the movie George was in with Catherine Zeta Jones called Intolerable Cruelty. He played George Massey a divorce attorney and he was famous for the “Massey Pre-Nup”. it was considered very hard to break.

  20. Daffy says:

There’s new info (again) released by People (again). Amal’s pal is talking.
And new photos on E!. I’m so SICK.

    • siri says:

It IS sickening, isn’t it? This kind of PR is anything but smart. If Clooney really was in love- why wouldn’t he just present the “results” matter-of-factly. And wouldn’t it have been much better for him to just declare he always thought he loved the women he has been with so far, and only meeting Amal made him realize what true love means…something like that. But no, even his mother stated arrogantly how much better, and more sophisticated Amal is compared to the others. It’s such a shame to be so rude and high-nosed, since her Georgie happily picked them, many of them. I wonder if he realizes how much this constant waffle will damage his highly fabricated image. How can anyone take this serious anymore?

      • whoozy says:

Yes, the man who famously said “Who wants 70 virgins? I want eight pros” is marrying a supposed successful lawyer..who LIVES with her mommy?? No siri, no one should give any of this manufactured pap much credence, but at least I get my Clooney laugh of the day.

      • Jackie says:

Yes, it would be smart for him to say some kind words about past girlfriends as good people so he does not look like a user and cad.

  21. serena says:

    Clooney’s camp is getting ridiculous.

  22. Aqua says:

Their’s been so much Clooney news lately I feel like I’m being constantly hit in the head by a sledge hammer.A pre-nup on both sides is not only expected but smart. They both have a lot to protect.

  23. Ravensdaughter says:

If he did, she shouldn’t be offended. She’s a lawyer. So am I, so I get the fact that her attorney mind would prevail despite all the other pre-nup emotional ups and downs (I’m including the crazymaking wedding planning). In fact, I would consider it a red flag if she was offended.

  24. Amulla says:

They will split like all famous couples do. Its just a question of when.

  25. Daffy says:

“Gossip Cop’s “source close to Clooney” says that there’s “no truth… in any way, shape or form.”

I wonder if George is idiot enough to marry her without a prenup.
