Zoe Saldana’s advice to actresses: ‘Don’t hike up your skirt,’ ‘read a book’

Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana covers the August issue of Fashion magazine to promote her role in Guardians of the Galaxy. She’s wearing a Julien Macdonald dress on the cover, and the rest of the shoot features slinky cocktail attire. I’m sad that Zoe never mentions her favorite topic, jar opening, in this interview. She does talk about how she finally found the right man in Marco Perego. Marco and Zoe happened pretty fast. They married five months after they started dating, and they first hooked up a few months after Zoe and Bradley Cooper quit it for good. Zoe and BCoop were together for about a year (on and off). Before that, Zoe was with Keith Britton for a decade. Even allowing for some sketchy math, Zoe has rarely been single, but she plays it off like she was super single when Marco came along:

Her view of competition in Hollywood: “I was a ferocious dancer so therefore I was a ferocious up-and-coming actress. When it comes to auditions, I’m not competitive with anybody. I don’t even know who’s sitting next to me. I wouldn’t even tell you if it was a blonde or brunette. The moment you compare yourself, it weakens you.”

On her quickie marriage to Marco Perago: “I was finally able to spend time without being in a relationship and even though, it was a short period of time, it was beautiful. Where I lost that fear of being alone. It was bliss. Then I met my partner when I was in really a beautiful place in my life. It was like I found all my answers with him not in him. I was finding my answers on my own.”

On the next Avatar movie: “[Neytiri] is stronger than what I wanted this time, but she’s also very vulnerable. It’s very much her journey and I accepted the job again because I believe the script has her going in the right path. Jake and Neytiri are very much still a force to be reckoned with.”

Her advice for women: “It’s important to not have women be afraid of you, to accept your mortality and your aging so that you can be a better mentor for up and coming women. Whenever these young women come and they just want to take everything all at once, just because they’re younger and their asses are harder and plumper, you kind of go, ”Child, sit down. Yes, you’re beautiful but listen to these 1, 2, 3s.’ 1. Don’t hike up your skirt too much. 2. I’m pretty sure you’re intelligent so act like it. 3. Read a book.”

At least Zoe admits she was only single for a short period of time. I guess when the right one comes along, a girl just knows it. Zoe is probably pregnant with Marco’s baby too. That will make her upcoming press tour pretty eventful, right? Her maternity style should be interesting.

There’s not much else to grab onto in this interview except for Zoe’s discussion on how actresses shouldn’t hike up their clothing for attention. She has a point.

I just saw a picture of her; she is definitely pregnant..

    Congrats her and her husband.

Hiking up your skirt is bad but wearing a dress cut down practically to the navel is okay?

That being said, I actually like Zoe. I’ve had a soft spot for her since “Center Stage,” and I usually like her fashion sense – she has cool style. I think sometimes her interview responses could be better thought out, though.

1). Sometimes they are just as dumb as they look.
2). Found all the answers about yourself in a short couple of months? Maybe you are not that intelligent either.

    • hermit says:

You can learn a lot about yourself in a week, if only you are willing to learn. You just need to be open to exploring yourself, observing other people mistakes, and be willing to take advice from people you respect.

  4. merski says:

“I’m pretty sure you’re intelligent so act like it.” —-> THIS!!!!! I cannot express how much I agree with it!

    • SpookySpooks says:

Me too. there are too many women ( and men, but less so) in the industry who act stupid to be likable and that is horrible.

      • snowflake says:

really? wow! what kind of industry is that?

      • Lollipop says:

We just had that debate about Jessica Simpson a few days ago.
        The entertainment industry, i believe.

      • Chris says:

Obviously they dumb themselves down. If they started offering food for thought their corporate masters would squash them like bugs. Mainstream entertainers are there to anesthetize the public. They’re not there to encourage them to question the status quo. The entertainment industry seeks to reinforce people’s consciousness. Not expand it.

        End rant.

  5. Lis says:

I like her. Finally someone from Hollywood that seems to have a decent, working head on their shoulders.

  6. sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

Have to agree with her on the skirt part, why do they sell themselves and play the dumb is beyond me…

  7. Taby says:

“and get all at once” this sounds too familiar. Young actresses nowadays want to break out and be Angelina famous the next month. I thought this was directed at Jennifer Lawrence

  8. Liz says:

The counter-argument to Zoe’s comments is that these women are adults making their own choices, and who are we to judge them for that. However, when the choice that is laid out for you is that you can either take your clothes off and get fame and lots of money for it or refuse to take off your clothes and remain in obscurity while we give those parts to one of a million other women willing to do so, it really doesn’t sound like much of a choice at all.

That nude dancer with the big boobs from the “Blurred Lines” video is a prime example of this. She decided to go for it, and that opened the doors for her to then be given the cover of GQ and a prominent role in “Gone Girl.”

What I’m getting at is that it’s difficult to turn the criticism on these actresses and tell them what they should be doing to advance in their careers when they are making choices based on the pathetic options that are laid out for them by the industry itself. Frankly, not everyone is a Meryl Streep or Julianne Moore who can make it on talent alone.

    • Liz says:

Also, just Google Zoe Saldana’s name and you’ll find lots of sexy photos of her posing in her undies, so what the hell is she even getting all self righteous about?

      • NKN says:

I get the feeling Zoe is describing girls who act like bimbos in private, including hiking their skirts up for men. I don’t think she considers wearing underwear for an ad campaign or a deeply cut dress for a magazine the same thing.

      • Dee says:

I was just going to say, didn’t she pose nude on the cover of Allure(I think) last year? But, maybe NKN is right. Anyway, it looks like she is saying once again that women should be intelligent and ladylike, but she’s gone around talking about her sex life in detail. That doesn’t seem too ladylike to me.

    • Faith says:

I don’t know why Zoe Saldanas comments make me eye roll, we not stop prepetuating that you can tell how intelligent a young person is by their clothes. I like to dress like its 1956 and I am a classical actor I’d still be just as intelligent if i wore a dress that barely covered my crotch.

    • Kaya says:

Yeah, but it usually doesn’t work out well in the long run for these women, does it?

You can get prominent roles in movies maybe once or twice, but it doesn’t cement the longevity of your career. Besides, if you’re not a Meryl or whoever, which I’m assuming means you don’t have the talent, then you need to find another career.

  10. Pepsi Presents...Coke says:

Maybe she should read I Put A Spell on You, followed by a manual on how to survive a train wreck.
