Vanessa Minnillo, 33, and Nick Lachey, 40, are expecting their second child together. The couple has been married for three years and has a son, Camden, who will turn two in September. Vanessa and Nick made the announcement with a super cute picture on Twitter announcing the sex of the baby:

This twitpic is actually very similar to the way that Nick’s ex, Jessica Simpson, announced her second pregnancy. She had her daughter, Maxwell, pose next to a drawing in the sand that said “Big Sis.” I doubt that Nick or Vanessa remembered that Jessica announced her pregnancy with a picture of her kid sitting by a sand message, and it’s not like this concept is super unique, but it struck me as interesting.
I wonder if Nick and Vanessa timed their pregnancy announcement so as not to steal the thunder from Jessica’s wedding to Eric Johnson a week and a half ago. There are new pictures of Vanessa sporting a small bump, and she looks about three months along. Plus they know the sex already so it’s not like it’s early days. I would bet that these two wanted to make sure that they waited until Jessica’s wedding was fading from the headlines before they made their own announcement. Jessica is still on the cover of People, but that issue is about to get replaced by Prince George.
Anyway congratulations to Vanessa and Nick! They seem like devoted hands-on parents and I’m sure they’re excited to be expecting another child. As a side note, I’m sad that Vanessa isn’t on Wipeout anymore. My kid loves that show and we watch it together. (It’s sadistic though, I know.) Vanessa was a much better host than Jill Wagner. Vanessa left Wipeout in 2012 to have her first baby. I would love to see her back on the show at some point. This last year she was on a now-canceled sitcom on Fox called Dads (which I’ve never heard of honestly) while Nick was hosting a singing gameshow on NBC I’ve also never heard of called The Winner Is. That was also canceled, but Nick has another gig! He hosts VH1 morning show Morning Buzz Live.

I agree, why would they or any other celebrity (especially C and D listers) feel the need to officially announce their pregnancies or weddings to the public like it is something special. Let the public notice it naturally and if people ask then confirm it like normal people, but most celebrities stay purposely tight lipped and play the hiding of the baby bump game with the media until their big blow out announcement. In the end of the day no one really cares that much.
Also, I have seen both Nick and Jessica’s reality show and Nick and Vanessa’s wedding show and I always got the impression that looks more emotionally distant with Vanessa then he did with Jessica, like he has been hurt so much by his first marriage that he is not the same enthusiastic person in his second, which is a shame because I think Vanessa suits him much more then Jessica did. Of course this is my impression I got from their shows and pictures so I could be very wrong.
Actually Jill Wagner was the original girl on Wipeout. She left for a while and Vanessa replaced her. They rehired Wagner because most viewers did not warm up to Vanessa.

I actually never watched when Vanessa did her stint. She seems like a pleasant person from what I remember from her MTV days.
I think the hardcore Wipeout fans just got used to Jil and never warmed to Vanessa.
I enjoy that silly show. The two male hosts crack me up. I have only seen it once this season but I do enjoy Wipeout.
Jill Wagner and Erin Andrews need to be locked in a small room armed with forks. Whoever gets out can host the next summertime reality/game/singing contest show. As for the pregnancy, that’s nice.
IMO Vanessa was far better than Jill. She didn’t seem like the contestants were outcasts and engaged with them. Jill will shoot funn faces, make badcomments/jokes only to insult and kept her distance while interviewing.
I’m no fan of Vanessa outside of Wipeout (because I don’t know her other works at all), but she was great on a show like that. She had personality that wasn’t at the expense of others.
I’ll admit I prefer Jill. I think I know what Vanessa was trying to do but she couldn’t pull it off, she came off as so flat and tight. I remember thinking she needed to lighten up – show some of Jill’s ‘goofiness’…. It’s Wipeout for Pete’s sake, you’re not showcasing a talent.
My kids and I watch Wipeout together too! I would rather see Vanessa than Jill . . .

Jill is slightly too nice for my tastes. Vanessa was slightly snarky to all the weird people that came through, and it was actually enjoyable.
That’s weird because I just posted how Jill was horrible in loads of episodes and Vanessa wasn’t afraid to hug them. Or stand next to them unlike Jill who would interview at arms length reaching the mic out as far as she could.
That was pretty much every Jill episode I saw. And I saw a lot. Wipeout marathon while I recovered from an operation.
I feel the need to defend myself. I am by no means a Jessica fan. I know she is dingy and shallow. However, he knew that when he married her and then put her down on a regular basis on national television. So, if he only married her for her body, what’s that say about him? He was a joke too. He had nothing going for him during the Newlywed show. She’s was the money-maker and the one in demand. He resented it. And, he demanded palimony…..how weak! How about you just get a damn job like the rest of the world?
And I am one of them. All that biatch did was make stupid faces and make fun of the contestants. Can’t stand this superficial, talentless twit who waited in the wings watching Nick treat Jessica like crap hoping she could have him. The answer to the question as to why any celebrity would announce their pregnancy is because they are really no longer celebrities. She’s over. She’s trying to stay in the spotlight and the only thing she has to garner attention is announcing her pregnancies.
I completely disagree. He loved Jessica and was extremely sad when they broke up. Their marriage ended because papa Joe started feeling like Jessica was going to be a huge star. Nick wanted to settle down and have a family but papa joe had big plans for Jessica after her surge in popularity from the newly wed show. Either way, they both have moved on and seem happy.
I see it differently. I admit to not knowing all the details but I recall Nick being a third whelk in his own marriage with Papa Joe taking the lead. At the time they got together Nick was the bigger earner and star power and over time that did change and you may be right he did resent that somewhat I don’t know. But I don’t recommend anyone marrying or staying married to anyone who let’s their parent(s) take the lead in a marriage. As for Vanessa, everyone calls her a famewhore but I don’t see it. She and Nick have always seemed low-key and super cute together. I mean I know we see some pap shots of them but they aren’t out doing the ho stroll everyday.

I don’t mind announcing it, in a cute way. Afterall, you might want to share that happy news with your fans….but I find it so odd to do it through a publicist.

Three month along is a pretty normal time to announce a pregnancy as the rates of miscarriage are highest in the first trimester so many couples don’t want announce it earlier.
I doubt the timing has anything to do with Jessica’s wedding. Anyway congrats to the two of them, the picture with the writing is cute.
If they know they are having a girl, she must be at least 5 months along. That info is generally found out at the big 20 week test.
I thought so too but they can find out earlier with those 3D sonograms.
There are many reasons why that information might be determined early. Some of my early tests were flagged as abnormal so I had some early ultrasounds and I found out the gender at 15 weeks with my second daughter.
I had a 3-D sonogram at 14 weeks they told me a boy. I knew that wasn’t right. I don’t know how I just knew.
The next week at 15 weeks I had a regular sonogram and they said girl. I went back to the 3-D place and said WTF. They did another sonogram and they said girl.
You can find out before 16-20 weeks with a Harmony/Panorama/MaterniT21 blood test. Or if you’ve done IVF with pregenitic screening, the doctors and techs will know what embryo they are inserting and you can find out almost immediately. Not saying that Vanessa and Nick did either option but there are ways to know before the anatomy scan.
You can actually find out the sex earlier nowadays with a certain blood test. Otherwise genitals start developing around 14 weeks, though since its a girl I’m guessing blood test. So she could very well still be around the 3-4 month mark.
Right MollyB. I had a blood test early to check for chromosomal abnormalities and they also check the gender. Unfortunately I was one of the 1% (so they say) where they got the gender wrong which lead to wondering if all of the other results were wrong so I ended up getting it again.
I also don’t think they thought about Jessica’s wedding. I don’t think they dwell on her like we might want them too. They seem to be very happy with their own lives.
We got a CVS test at 11 weeks or so (the earlier alternative to the amniocentesis I think it’s called). They check the full chromosome panel so they can see what the last pair is. We told the doctor we wanted to know the gender when they called with the results but no one told the nurse calling me so she was giving me everything except. I was like, and…. and….. Okay, what is it? I guess better that the opposite happening.

Fun fact: Vanessa actually replaced Jill, then Jill came back. (the BF has a crush on Jill. All I heard during Vanessa’s season was ‘I wish Jill would come back’)
If I remember correctly you need to be about 16-20 weeks pregnant to determine the sex. A girl is harder to determine with a high rate of accuracy early early in pregnancy
You can find out earlier with blood work, though it’s not in the standard tests that most people do. They could have also just done an early ultrasound, as genitals start developing around 14 weeks and while it can be harder to tell its not impossible.
I don’t trust those damn ultrasounds. I had 3 with my last pregnancy. Girl, girl, girl. It’s totally a girl. Look! There’s labia! GIRL!

What do these two do to earn a living now? Is Nick still trying to tour? His music career is not going to take off and he is way to bland to really make a splash in reality television or hosting. He is a good guy and she is a good woman but they are a bit boring.

98 degrees was a part of thr NKOTB boy band tour not too long ago. He’s made a lot of money through his career, so if he’s put a good chunk away they can just live off of that.

I love how if this was Jessica announcing something a week later, she’d be trying to steal their thunder, but its the other way around so they’re being considerate by waiting a whole week.

That money was made while they were married and living in California, which is a community property state – it was THEIR money, not hers. I really don’t see any animosity between these two couples. I like both of them and think they’re relatively better when you take into account celebrities who sell you an app to share baby photos or get a company to sponsor their child’s birth.
What would Jessica have to do with it? I don’t know too many women who announce a pregnancy before three months to anyone but family because of fear of miscarriage and wanting past the first trimester. I remember one of my teachers in college did and she came to class one day and she had miscarried and had to tell us. It was very sad and I’m sure she didn’t want to have to tell everyone she had shared all that news with. It was her first pregnancy so had been so excited. The second pregnancy she kept it quiet until she felt past the danger period.
Also, Vanessa is probably beginning to show so announced it.
