For all of us down here in ‘Murica, the Toronto International Film Festival can be sort of a pain in the ass. It’s somewhat difficult to get good photos of any of the smaller premieres, everything seems really crowded and rushed and the celebrity gossip usually takes a backseat to, you know, actually talking about the movies. This year’s TIFF will run from September 4th through September 14th. You can read everything about the newly-announced TIFF line-up here. Some highlights:
*Foxcatcher is coming. If you’ve seen any of the teaser trailers for Foxcatcher, you know why everybody is raving about Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo and Steve Carell. It already premiered at Cannes to rapturous reviews. TIFF could be the second step towards a major Oscar push.
*Some big movie stars are coming. Denzel Washington will premiere The Equalizer, which sounds like a Jason Statham movie. Robert Downey Jr. is premiere The Judge (which looks like a Hallmark Channel TV movie), Reese Witherspoon will premiere The Good Lie and Wild. And Alan Rickman premieres his directoral effort A Little Chaos, with Kate Winslet.
*Jennifer Aniston will be there to promote Cake, that film where she “uglied up” and wore prosthetic scars. Will Aniston have an Oscar campaign? Doubtful.
*Jon Stewart will premiere Rosewater at TIFF. That’s the true story that he directed about an Iranian-Canadian journalist who was jailed in Iran for appearing on The Daily Show.
*Sparkles & K-Stew. Sparkles will probably be there to premiere Maps to the Stars (he was in Cannes in May to promote it too), and Kristen might be there for Still (with Julianne Moore and Alec Baldwin).
*Hot guys. Chris Evans will be in town for Before We Go. Tom Hardy will be there to promote The Drop (the movie with the puppy). Benedict Cumberbatch will be there to promote The Imitation Game. Viggo Mortensen will be in town for Far From Men.
Sounds pretty good. I think I’m most excited to see The Imitation Game, Foxcatcher and Rosewater. Mostly I’m just curious about Rosewater, but I bet it’s good. Meanwhile, Variety has an interesting piece about how TIFF is no longer the go-to destination for the start of a film’s Oscar campaign. Like, six and seven years ago, if a film had a good opening at TIFF, that meant it was going to be a strong Oscar contender. Not so much anymore – we’ve seen a rise in importance for other fall film festivals, like Telluride, Venice, BFI London and the NYFF. We’ll see!

Cumberbatch in another tux. You know the expression, ‘a good suit is to women what lingerie is to men’. Yup! :p
HAHAHA that picture of Aniston made me snort so loudly!
Everyone elses pictures are nice, hers looks like she’s been caught coming out of a portaloo.
Cumby was on FIRE at TIFF last year, he better bring it this year!
Not loving the idea that a facial scar is considered uglifying. I’ve spent a good chunk of my life trying to overcome that idea.
Me too, Ninks.
I move Toronto from Ireland three days after the festival! If only I’d booked my flights a week earlier! 🙁
You might catch some celebs in the airport though!
@Kaiser, who wrote: “Denzel Washington will premiere The Equalizer, which sounds like a Jason Statham movie.”
Hmmm … there was a much loved and acclaimed American TV series called “The Equalizer” that ran from 1985 – 1989 and starred awesomely talented A+++ British actor Edward Woodward. He was one bad, Kick-a$s ma. It was a great show. The main character (with a secret operative past) helped people who couldn’t help themselves against highly trained mean people out to harm/kill them.

I just checked the summary of Denzel’s film and it has a similar plot. This could be really, really good.

Jennifer Aniston is going to TIFF again? I remember last year when the director of life of crime cried that Jen’s performance was great, and her pr never ending release of how she fended off rapists in the movie… What happened to that movie oh I forgot its going straight to VOD because they couldn’t find a distributor! when it priemered at TIFF last year her fans went on that she was going to score an oscar nomination.
Well let’s see how this year plays out for her with Cake at TIFF. I hope it doesn’t go straight to VOD
Wow, I wondered what happened to that film. Shocker.
The bloke and a dog!
Yah, that’s a great photo, all around. And the batches of Cumbers looks decent in that shot and suit, even though he isn’t my thing.
Neither one of them is mine but I lean more towards Hardy and those pictures with the dog are adorable and he looks good. But, yes, I am keeping my distance, no desire to be shanked.
I loooove Tom Hardy and his dog! There are a handful of paparazzi photos from that moment, and you see him pat the dog on the back, then the dog turns around and gives Tom some love. It is REALLY adorable!
Yesssss….come to me, Cumby!
Although in reality there’s no way I’ll be any where near the TIFF events. I can’t stand crowds now that I’m older. Standing outside a theatre with thousands of other people for hours on end is my personal Hell. Anyone else find that too as they got older?
Hello Kitty it can be hell unless you arrive early and get a good spot. Though the hours of waiting can be hell. I recently experienced that back in May when I stood out in front of the Ziegfeld theater to get a glimpse of Matt Bomer and Mark Ruffalo at the premiere of A Normal Heart. AJ and Brad was a pleasant surprise. It was worth the hell but I don’t think I will be doing it again anytime soon.
Nice of you to join us, my friend.
LOL, I was having technical difficulties.
I would LOVE to go to a TIFF event even if it’s just once.I just love movies and I would be thrilled to see a movie star in real life even if it’s only for a glimpse, but yes I can barely stand the long line up at the grocery store or especially the womens washroom so I can only imagine what it’s like a TIFF.The line up of movies at TIFF sound REALLY GOOD this year.
*slaps Sixer’s hand away*
Hands off my bloke!
Today, and only today, you may have him, little Kitten. I’m just too bloody hot to be lustful. Make the most of it!
ok what´s with Hollywood and those silly “scars make you ugly”-thing? No they don´t! Why is there a movie about an “ugly” woman with one scar on her cheek? I see nothing ugly in scars. What´s the message? Oh now you have a scar on your cheek or elsewhere so you´re so ugly you don´t need to apply make-up anymore, stop styling your hair and wear baggy colourless sweaters so you can hide yourself because you are a scar monster???? WTF!
Tina Fey has a facial scar and she’s far from ugly. I have had a scar on each lip since I fell off a slide at age 3. Lipstick covers them perfectly. Scars are part of life. Let’s face reality.
I actually kind of dig scars. There is usually an interesting story behind a scar.
I couldn’t be bothered to stand in line to catch a glimpse of a movie star. It’s just another human being. I don’t get it. I’ve seen plenty and they just look like everyone else.
