Kate Upton: In most shoots, ‘the model is retouched & too skinny & depressed’

Kate Upton

Kate Upton has been quiet on the gossip front, mostly because she’s incredibly busy with work and her new boyfriend (Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers). A cute new photoshoot has surfaced from when Kate was 15 years old. You should go look at it because it really shows off her star factor. Kate is 21 now, and her career has exploded. She still pops out for the occasional interview. She also co-hosted Live with Kelly and Michael on Friday. You can see a video of her appearance here. Some outlets are asking if Kate looks pregnant or not. I vote “not.”

Kate has a new interview with Details where she talks about several topics. She covers the lingering question of whether she’d pose for Playboy. Kate has done (link NSFW) body paint for SI: Swim. We all know what her breasts and booty look like because SI shoots leave little to the imagination. Kate has yet to fully disrobe, and she tells Details that the internet prevents her from doing so. She thinks nude shots should be “art” instead of pr0n.

Kate does step into slightly shady territory by discussing her “realistic” body. Uh-oh. This is slightly off-topic, but have you seen the new controversial Gap campaign? Some people wonder whether the internet has “skinny shamed” the model. The topic dovetails with Kate’s assertion that most shoots contain “too skinny” models who are retouched. Kate says most models really aren’t that skinny — they’re just airbrushed that way. Here we go:

Why she sells magazines: “I am the target audience. I’m 21 and I love fashion and I feel like a normal girl — at least to a certain extent. I think that people can relate to me. Most of the time the model is retouched and too skinny and other women get depressed by it. But really, that model who is being retouched and is too skinny is depressed as well. Because she doesn’t look like that photo either! It’s not realistic for that model or that woman reading the magazine to think she should look like that. I love my body and I feel very confident with where I am and who I am as a person.”

Did she always accept her body? “No, at first it was terrible! But then I got inspired by other women being inspired by me. Seeing that other women went through that as well made me stronger. I wanted to inspire them by going through it and making it out the other end. Everybody goes through hard times, regardless whether they didn’t get the job that they wanted or if they are being criticized for their body, so I think they can relate to that and people are rooting for me. Me being criticized is more on a global level, but it still hurts just as much for any girl if she’s at school being criticized or at work being criticized.”

She has to turn down high fashion offers: “Well, you’d be surprised how many offers I actually do get in fashion campaigns, but I unfortunately have to say no because my career is moving at such a rapid pace. I want to hit all the top things. I want Italian Vogue with Steven Meisel, but I can’t do all of the other things because I also want to shoot a movie. You think you can do it all. I’m traveling everywhere and I’m trying to do everything and I can’t.”

Why she hasn’t posed nude yet like Kate and Naomi: “For me those photos are art. Your body is art, your body is beautiful, and to be photographed in that way is amazing and it’s received in a very positive way. But with social media and the Internet and not so great blogs and the attention like that, I don’t think that my pictures would be received in the way that I’d want them to be received. That’s why I’ve stayed away from them. I really appreciate those photos and I think those women are beautiful, but I think social media and the Internet has prevented me from putting myself out there like that.”

Being a “bombshell” at 21: “It’s where I’ve started and it’s what I’ve accomplished, so I’m happy about it. But the more my career grows, I think that people will see that I have a lot more to offer and a lot more to give, but I want to do it right and that’s why it’s taking me time. I’m patient about it. Now it’s out of my hands — it has kind of been rolling on its own — but at the beginning I was micromanaging every little step.”

[From Details – The Talks]

I don’t think Kate was “skinny shaming” in her discussion of weight. She could have phrased things better because some people will feel differently. She’s saying that there’s pressure on every model to look perfect, and airbrushing hurts everyone’s feelings. Especially models.

Kate is wise to not disrobe in the internet age. Any nude shoot she does would be sliced and diced on the “dude” blogs, and no one would consider it “art” at all. Scarlett Johansson said something similar about her Under the Skin role: “You assume it’s going to be a screenshot for someone.” Yep.

Lordy, that photo shoot. She wouldn’t have gotten far on ANTM. Although they focus on high fashion and Upton is more like a bikini model (I think?) that occassionally does high fashion.

    • Hotpockets says:

The girls who do go far on ANTM or win the contract never seem to be heard of again 6 months down the road. A friend of mine who is signed to Wilhelmina models told me that a lot of campaigns and photographers won’t even work with models who have been on the show because they feel it devalues their modeling potential, so maybe it’s not a bad thing she wouldn’t make it far on the show?

      • Bridget says:

There have been a few very notable exceptions, but I would guess that there are other, bigger reasons we don’t see those girls – they’re too old (by a LOT), they’re heavier than most fashion models are expected to be, the contestants are usually chosen more for ‘good television’, and most of the women simply don’t have the look of a model. There’s some leeriness in fashion about working with someone with a reality show past, but then again they’re the same way about an awful lot of stuff – height, weight, age…

      • Josefa says:

Nobody in the business takes ANTM seriously. The show is hilarious and I love it, but Tyra is full of sh*t. The industry works nothing like she describes it.

The most succesful models from the show all make a living out of the less prestigious markets – Mexico, India, South Africa – where the American reality TV star status can be seen as a plus (great for them, I’m not looking down on those markets). In the big fashion capitals – Milan, Paris, London – they are much more likely to get models with proper training and the proper look. Once you get into the industry, you realise only about 1 or 2 girls per ANTM cycle have an actually marketable look in HF.

      • Hotpockets says:

That’s what my friend essentially said, that the fact they were on a “reality show”taints their image to a lot of respected people in the fashion industry, which deems them undesirable as a model. None of the girls who have appeared on the show could ever dream of being as successful as Kate Upton.

      • Bridget says:

The show really is fun to watch, but it’s about as high fashion as Old Navy. Remember the season where almost all the girls got Muppet weaves from Ken Paves? Come on. Though Fatima has carved a legitimately successful career for herself, and Ann still pops up in the occasional commercial or ad, even now. I don’t know that I would say that the girls themselves are tainted, so much that fashion people already know that Tyra chooses people who are wholly unsuitable for actual modelling. The youngest, youngest contestants are 18 (though most are at least 20) and models are expected to start around 14/15. Also, girls who have the true high fashion look wouldn’t actually translate that well to American television.

      • Bridget says:

Anyhoo, it’s the same thing with shows like The Face. If you crown a 24 year old winner you might as well just directly hand her the number for the folks at Vogue Knitting and the model casting for Project Runway.

      • Josefa says:

True, Bridget, though I’d say The Face has A LOT more cred than ANTM. Plenty of those girls have marketable looks and the photoshoots, while low budget and everything, are something I think I could see in a magazine. No serious fashion mag will do a photoshoot about models entangled in cables at a Ciara concert. I think the UK version of The Face with Naomi, Erin O’Connor (LURVE that fierce bitch) and Carol Winberg is the best modeling reality show I’ve seen from a modeling PoV. Aussie NTM comes close, too.

      • Josefa says:

PS: Fatima really has made a decent career for herself in legitimate fashion capitals. But if you’re savvy you can make a very good living out of other markets. Jaslene, who happens to be my favorite winner, has been working like crazy and has appeared several times on international versions of Elle and Vogue. Raina, S5 Nicole, and Eugena are also very succesful. And then you have girls like Eva, Yaya, Adrianne and Analeigh who’ve made some good bucks from other industries like TV, films and hosting events. I’ve always said so, Tyra’s girls could be legitimate stars if she went all for making the show more about commercial modeling. I mean, heck, what kind of HF cred you want your show to have with Seventeen and Covergirl as sponsors! (I still don’t understand how she managed to get Vogue Italia…)

Sorry if I went ahead writing about a bunch of stuff you already knew. But ANTM was such a big part of my teen years, lol. I love so much talking about it!

      • Observer says:

Most models lie about their age anyway so it doesn’t really matter as much as long as you LOOk young. And most models, even Kate Upton, actually look OLDER than their real age.
Kate Upton looks late twenties to me.

  2. Charlotte says:

She reminds me so much of Anna Nicole Smith. And that makes me nervous.

    • FLORC says:

Where is the comparison outside of blonde model that is slightly heavier than others? And anna was curvy. Kate just isn’t curvy. She does have a big chest, but not a small waist like anna.

    • Nicolette says:

I was just going to post the same thing. That third picture of her standing at the ballgame really gave me Anna Nicole vibes.

    • Kiddo says:

Sorry Charlotte, I didn’t notice your comment, but said the same below. She is certainly channeling that ‘type’.

      • kri says:

Her face is quite similar to ANS. I remember seeing Anna’s Guess ads-I was so bowled over by her, I just stopped at stared at the page. She really had something early on. It’s so sad what she did to herself. Kate seems ok-I don’t think she is in any way shading naturally thin people-she seems to be saying that even skinny models are air-brushed to look skinnier. That, to me is really what is wrong here. That is so sick-to airbrush someone to be even thinner. It only contributes to ED’s and crazy expectations.I wish lines (including high-end houses) would use more body types….sigh.

      • Kiddo says:

Yeah, I agree, don’t think she was talking down about any shape.

  3. Francis says:

I find her appealing and a nice change. She will make a lot of money , commerically.
She reminds me of a Cindy Crawford who did Playboy but also had a large appeal commercially and could sell, except Kate is not a designers model, but she still will sell.
Kate Upton is about the only of the new models name I know these days.

    • Kiddo says:

She reminds me of Anna Nicole Smith, as the Guess model, although I think Anna had a little more of “it” before the heavy-duty alcohol and drug abuse.

      • Melissa says:

        @Kiddo
Ia I think she is very similar to Anna Nicole regarding her looks although she seems a blander personality-wise to me.

      • Francis says:

Yes looks wise ,Anna but commercially I think her appeal is wider range, than. Nicole, her agents seem like their doing more a Cindy Crawford across the board appeal.
Did Anna a Nicole get vogue cover, high level cosmetics contracts, I don’t think so.

      • Kiddo says:

Cindy had a unique look for the time. Actually, she still does. Upton is more the every-girl blond next door with large breasts. I think Anna got paid a fortune for the Guess jeans ads, they were plastered everywhere and were quite popular at the time.

        http://www.buzzfeed.com/briangalindo/20-gorgeous-photos-from-anna-nicole-smiths-guess-campaign#1194s3z

Unfortunately, Anna had a very dysfunctional and economically poor early life, and I’d say her biggest mag covers were tabloids. Upton has had a little better start with connections and affluent beginnings that can make a world of difference.

  4. Lilyvanilli says:

She’s got Katherine Heigl stylist dressing her.

  5. Poe says:

I don’t understand her hype. Can someone explain it to me? She’s not drop dead gorgeous, and she’s far from fit. Is it, because she’s what most everyday women look like? Is that it?

I understand Cumberbatch and Hiddleston hype, while they’re not the most attractive, they are funny and very humble in interviews.

    • FLORC says:

      Poe
From my understanding it’s because she talking about not being skinny.
She did a cute youtube dance. Got attention for her bouncing chest. Made SI cover twice in a row. And I think that’s it.
Since she’s got the dumb blonde roles, which seems easy enough for her acting skills. And she talking (to remind people?) that she’s not starving herself like other models. She always seems to bring it up and discuss it like she’s superior for not being that skinny. It’s less shade here, but it’s all she has. As far as having that something that makes a model memorable I don’t see it. My opinion ofcourse.

      Slightly OT
My Express coupons came in and she’s a model for them and their jeans. I’ve never seen a jean ad from them that covers so much of the jeans. Are they afraid to snap her head on?

    • maybeiamcrazy says:

      Boobs!!!

      • mayamae says:

I think you’re right. Maybe that’s why so many women can’t see her appeal. I have my own DD’s – therefore she doesn’t impress me.

    • Petee says:

Poe.The most everyday woman would be Jennifer Aniston. That is her appeal.I like Kate. She seems sweet and pretty normal. She is not drop dead gorgeous,But she is a pretty girl. You don’t see most girls like her at the checkout line do you?

      • Poe says:

Actually, where I’m from, a lot of girls look like her to be honest.

I understand from everyone’s post what her appeal is now. I’ve never really paid attention to her until recently.

      • Petee says:

Nice answer Poe.Where I live we don’t.If we do they are usually here for Coachella Fest.

    • Liv says:

Most models are not drop dead gorgeous. Some are, but many are pretty plain so that the designers can change their look. Kate is obviously an attractive model. You might not like how she looks, but I think it’s her charisma what gets people. She seems very cheerful and happy.

      • Francis says:

I think she’s beautiful, I love that she’s not a stick and she has boobs and she sells.
There is something charismatic about her.

      • Pirate says:

With all due respect, Poe never said He/she didn’t like the way Kate looks. Just that she didn’t understand her appeal. I don’t see the charisma everyone talks about, all I see is boobs. That’s not charisma in it’s true form, that’s an assets masquerading as charisma.

Just my two cents. Different strokes.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I think it’s her vibe. She has a very sunny attitude and she SMILES! Her photoshoot always have a positive bent to them it seems.

      • Dani says:

I don’t see this charisma you speak of. She’s just another girl next door from a small town. I went to high school with 500 girls JUST like her, maybe even prettier. She was just at the right place at the right time. If we’re gonna talk blonde bombshells with charisma, she doesn’t even break tenth on that list.

      • Tiffany :) says:

“She’s just another girl next door from a small town.”

I don’t understand comments like these. As if great beauty must come from a large city? Many legendary beauties came from small towns, like Marilyn Monroe.

    • Anne tommy says:

I have to say I think she’s very pretty and it’s nice to see someone not a skeleton doing well. Not as pretty as Tom, Poe, but pretty.

    • OhDear says:

She’s the epitome of what many people think of as the all-American girl – blonde, seemingly sunny and sweet personality. She’s also pretty but not “intimidatingly” pretty (not meant as shade) so people either feel that they have a chance with her or that they can relate to her. Also, her body is larger than that of most models, so it brings out all the “OMG, she’s a REAL woman” hype.

      • Poe says:

Okay, that makes perfect sense to me now. I didn’t even think of the All-American girl thing. Now, I feel silly for wondering what her hype was.

Thanks for answering everyone. I do find it refreshing that she’s not stick thin. I understand the hype now.

  6. Hissyfit says:

I think she’s gorgeous when she is styled like a 50s bombshell. And she actually looks great when she’s covered up nicely. But in the runway, she doesn’t stand out, very forgettable. I can’t believe she’s only 21. She looks like she’s in the 27-28 ish age.

  7. stellalovejoydiver says:

I like her, but I find it annoying that she is trying to position herself as the role model for body confidence when she is tall, slender, blonde and pretty with big boobs.
I am not saying she didn’t get through an akward phase but I can’t really get inspired by her “struggle”.

    • Lucinda says:

However, her body type IS different from most models. I think what she is saying has some value even if it were better for her to focus not on her size but more on how her shape is different. The rest of her comments are spot on and she isn’t skinny shaming. Most models ARE underweight and ARE photoshopped into oblivion. We need to start talking about that. No one thinks we are “white shaming” when we talk about the need for representation of different skin tones and colors but if we talk about different shapes, it immediately becomes a more two-dimensional conversation focused on size and skinny shaming. It’s ridiculous.

      • Bob Loblaw says:

She’s not that different from other models, she’s pretty and has a nice figure. Yes, she’s different from the teen figure seen on high-fashion cat walks but that is it. What struggle has she had to face, too pretty, too tall, too attractive? Try being confident when no one wants to take your photograph and people tell you to get out of the picture. My point is, she has never faced the challenge, she has no idea what it takes to have self respect when society tells you you suck.

  8. Chris says:

This ‘Marilyn-blowing-a-kiss’ thing is not always a good idea. LiLo looks at best demented doing it, for others it’s a little less than flattering.

  9. InvaderTak says:

Everytime I see her now all I can think about is that new blooper where the anchors were talking about Verlander and showed a video of her dancing like a d-bag in a bikini. Can’t unsee. Why do we need her (or anyone’s) comments on other peoples’ bodies? Speak for and about yourself. Leave it at that.

    • mayamae says:

Every time I see her now, all I can think of is that poor farm girl suffering from her “inconvenient” beauty, unable to manipulate her sister into doing her chores for her.

  10. KATTYKITTY says:

Model or not, homegirl looks huge in the picture with the white T-shirt. The red suit outfit is also less than flattering despite the belt.

Pretty girl, but she is much thinner at 15. Gaining this much weight by 21 makes me wonder what she’ll look like at 31. Her look is not my personal preference as I prefer a slim, athletic physique, but she seems super comfortable in her body and that’s really all that matters. Plus, it seems to be working for her career so far. -shrug-

    • M. says:

Yeah well kittycat, I was a measly 43 kilograms (95lbs) at 15. Then I matured into a woman and have been at a steady 48-49 kilos for the past four years and am now 23. Yes, it shows on my short body. It’s going to get worse, but not much. That’s what women’s bodies tend to do once they mature – they get slightly heavier. Kate is still skinny by modern standards, just not “I’m a coltish 15-y-o with a hyperactive metabolism” skinny.
Then again I’m suspicious of anyone who calls a skinny girl “so much heavier” and proceeds to state that their preference in bodies is slim and athletic (which doesn’t pertain to the topic at hand at all).

      • KATTYKITTY says:

Well, I weighed 135lbs at 15 and have “matured into a woman” and now weigh 125lbs at 31.

I’m suspicious of anyone that thinks “maturing into a woman” means gaining weight and that it “only gets worse”, but then I remind myself that they are on the internet and don’t f—ing matter.

      • luna says:

For anyone who’s young and worried about their weight in the future & aging in general…

Just get into a pattern of taking care of yourself and nothing has to “get worse” for a verry long time…similar to posters I’m a steady 120-123, but at age 42, and people often assume I’m in my 20’s.

Just two things: Wear sunscreen every day!!! On your neck and chest and shoulders too. And just don’t eat too much. You don’t have to exercise like a maniac (though I love to run and be active) but what maintains your weight…yeah. Just don’t eat too much.

If you have a few extra minutes, do a few strength exercises, ab work, leg lifts and the like. I’ll hang out in a squat position while I’m brushing my teeth. Give my 5 year old a lot of piggy back rides; use the stairs. Simple things that are easy, and just part of your life, and not an extra thing you have to go and do every day.

    • mayamae says:

She would look better in the white t-shirt if she wasn’t wearing a five year old’s jacket over it.

  11. smee says:

I’m surprised that she thinks she’s a fashion girl. She’s more of a girly-girl, imo. Her sense of fashion seems like it has to do with the perfect bikini and shorts – when she’s wearing anything else, it tends to be unflattering (probably bc her shape is not an off-the-rack size).

You’re right about the 15 year old photo shoot pics – she really does have star power.

  12. Leaflet says:

Kate Upton annoys me. I don’t exactly know why I get annoyed most of the time.

  13. JG says:

‘Kate says most models really aren’t that skinny – they’re just airbrushed that way’

^ This coming from the most photoshooped model in history.

Tons of candid shots of her at the beach prove that her body is ‘naturally’ shaped like a thick scuba tank. But because of massive amounts of airbrushing we never see that in her photo shoots.

  14. whatwhatnot says:

Other than having a pretty face and huge boobs, I don’t get the hype. OK so she is not the average waif looking model, but imo her body isn’t even proportioned well to be a model. I see so many healthier weight women with nice shapes. Tapered waist proportioned hips and healthy thighs and butt. She’s got big boobs but then is shaped like a rectangle. And her booty is pretty sad looking. It’s flat, tiny and saggy. It doesn’t look good in a bathing suit. She should be happy about photoshop since it helps her out with those areas.

  15. Dotty says:

Oh, honey. Just take a seat, count your money, and hire a good financial advisor.

  16. TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

SHe’s not saying anything that hasn’t been said in the last 10-12 years in blogs and on the internet; anyone familiar with the 80s/90s knows how much better overall fashion, models, ad campaigns, and photography was compared to today – consider Revlon’s unforgettable faces campaign from 1987-1991 A classic ad campaign nothing today comes close to. Katy Perry is not a cover girl – Iman, Christie Brinkley, Kim Alexis, Jerry Hall, etc. yes.
No offense to Kate Upton I’m glad for her, but does she know who Coco Chanel is – there are plenty of bios out there.

    • Petee says:

All those great model’s and photographers back in the day.The 60’s,70’s and then the Supermodel’s of the 90’s.Ever since then it really hasn’t been the same.Photoshopping should be banned.

      • Francis says:

They photoshopped in the 90’s too but I agree the models were way better and real.
That’s what I like about Kate Upton though, she reminds me of those back in the day models, when the ladies had personalities as well as looks.
        I think Kate is stunning.

  17. Amy says:

Wow, she was such a gangly looking thing at 15! She has a lot of charisma in those pictures and I can see why people like to photograph her. She has a very expressive face. But then I guess puberty set in and she got curves. I still don’t understand why she is considered a plus size model. So she has slightly wider hips and bigger breasts? My supervisor at work has her body type and I don’t really consider her plus size either.

  18. LAK says:

Still don’t get why she’s a thing, no matter her size. She’s so catalogue to me.

  19. Mischa Jane says:

Jesus, some of you are pretty critical and rude about Kate’s body. We all have flaws, no one is perfect. I think she’s lovely. She can’t help the fact that she does not have a super defined waist. Some people are just built more straight up and down. I also don’t think she has a saggy ass or looks huge in the picture where she’s wearing the white jeans. Y’all are really harsh.

    • Francis says:

      IMO she’s absolutely gorgeous.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

They’re self-hating and jealous, IMO, she’s a knock out and very fortunate.

      • Argh matey says:

I don’t think all of it is self-hate or jealous. I think so may truly be that people have different taste in things. Like, I despise apples, and gag when I eat apples. You may love apples, and can’t get enough.

Personal preferences. Different strokes. Beauty is in the eye if tthe beholder, etc, etc.

  20. xoxokaligrl says:

For a model she isn’t very pretty and her face is very blah.

For a regular person she is gorgeous..

    • Naddie says:

Spot on. If she was my coworker, I’d refuse to go out by her side, but in a job where the looks (not exactly beauty) are the most important, she definetly doesn’t stand out.

  21. Lia says:

Justin Verlander is not her “new” boyfriend. She was here in Detroit at the games last season, too. We had been hearing about her for several months at that time.

    • briargal says:

I wonder if that is possibly why his pitching has gone down hill?!! Maybe wondering about all the gossip surrounding her and other guys has been on his mind! Just guessing ….

  22. caitie says:

I think she is gorgeous, I certainly don’t know anyone in my regular social group anywhere that good looking! Once again, a waist is somewhat born not made.. I like that we are celebrating a shape that is outside the perfect hourglass ideal, many people simply cannot achieve this shape no matter how fit they become due to their actual rib bones!! She looks great, has a great attitude, stunning face, tall, and yeah has a great chest.

    • Small town gal says:

Almost all of the girls I went to school looked very similar to Kate Upton that’s probably why I don’t get her hype. She’s nothing new to me.

  23. Velvet Elvis says:

Can someone explain to me again why this girl is a supermodel?? She is just average pretty and on the chubby side.

    • Small town gal says:

If you scroll up a bit comment 5, there’s a little conversation as to why she may be one. She is definitely chubby for supermodel status, I agree.
