Cate Blanchett’s NYC street style involves drop-crotch pants: fab or fug?

FFN_Blanchett_Cate_GGFF_081614_51503454

Cate Blanchett has been in NYC for several weeks, having brought the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of The Maids to Broadway. As such, the paparazzi have gotten lots of street-style photos of Cate entering the theater every day. Cate, as we all know, enjoys clothes. She enjoys high-fashion and she has a wonderful ability to make simple, inexpensive pieces look like haute couture.

Many theater actors just wear jeans to and from their jobs, but not Cate. Cate puts some thought into it. Take those drop-crotch pants Cate wore a few days ago. Lainey has been praising the drop-crotch for a while but I always associate (fairly or unfairly) the drop-crotch with Justin Bieber and his droopy drawers. I think the drop-crotch always looks ill-fitting and yes, sort of juvenile. Like you need extra room for a diaper or something. So, I’m kind of disappointed in Cate’s drop-crotch. But I am obsessed with her too-big tote. THAT is amazing.

As for Cate’s play, The Maids, every critic has praised the production and Cate specifically. Professionally speaking, Cate can do no wrong. She’s the Meryl Streep of her generation, able to hit it out of the park every time, in theatre, film or television (although Cate doesn’t do TV!). Cate just won the Helpmann Award for Best Female Actor this week for the play. And every single actress has made a pilgrimage to NYC to see Cate in the play. This is the list of women who have gone to see it: Meryl Streep, Marlo Thomas, Nicole Kidman, Taylor Schilling, Rachel Weisz, Anne Hathaway, Naomi Watts, Blythe Danner, Bernadette Peters… and I’m sure, so many more. Page Six says it will probably be adapted into a movie.

  1. don't kill me i'm french says:

Beurk ! A Justin Bieber pant!

  2. jane says:

–not a good look for anyone–ever

    • fairyvexed says:

They look uncomfortable! Plus they’re going to be out of style in about sixty seconds.

      • Sullivan says:

To me, they look comfortable. After years of being molested by tight skinny jeans, I might welcome all that room. My legs would look one foot long, though.

      • We Are All Made of Stars says:

All the haters keep trying to say that, but harem/drop crotch/dhoti pants have been in for years now, at least among the fashion crowd.

      • QQ says:

Weareall.. OMG LEMME TELL YOU! ive become the queen of a drop crotch light harem crazy pant and I Freaking LOVE em so comfy! Easy to dress up or down, sassy! Wooo! And Im really not one for pants cause Im tall and have ass so most of the times i have Hem/fit issues but with these sorts of pants the proportions alone sorta make it not matter if they are shorter on the leg? And sooo comfy

    • LadyMTL says:

I think it depends on how low they are in the crotch. I have a pair in a very different fabric and they are nowhere near as low as these, and they look good on me and are very comfy too.

I wouldn’t wear ones that hang this low, however. I might be tall-ish but I’d look stumpy for sure.

    • Ag-UK says:

+1 WTF who invented those hideous trousers? You see them a lot in Spain in patterns again just No!! I would think walking around it would feel weird.

    • Gea says:

I really like Cate, there is something about her ….JE NE SAIS QUOI…Perhaps the way she carry herself, her grand persona . What ever this woman wears she is in control, she carry on with style…..very much reminds me of Kathryn Hepburn . That old Hollywood glamour…

      • tessy says:

There is no glamour involved with those horrible pants. I don’t care who’s wearing them they are downright ugly.

  3. snusnu says:

    Queen.

  4. LadyJane says:

No drop-crotch love here. Just because Cate can do it, does not mean it should be attempted by mere mortals.

    • Lee says:

And she can’t even do it.

      • emmie_a says:

She can’t, I agree. They make her legs look stubby. If they didn’t show her ankles they’d look better. Or maybe she needs a bit of a heel.

      • Dio says:

This! Whyyyy? Maybe if they were a cool summery print w/tropical colors, w/a fitted white tank top… But not that conservative business trouser cut! Just say no!

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Nope. She looks ridiculous. For one thing, the rest of her outfit is so conservative. Ugh. Just no.

  5. Belle Epoch says:

Ugh! Hideous! Reminds me if the last century when pantyhose would fall down and bind your thighs together.

Let’s play “what’s in the bag?” I’m thinking a wallet, lipstick, and phone. That’s it!

    • Jules says:

I’ve noticed that those purses always look like they are empty. And those pants are hideous.

    • Esmom says:

To me it looks like she’s got stuff in there, it’s sort of poking out at the bottom. Which would make sense considering she’s on her way to a night of work at the theater and not just parading around for the paps.

  6. in_theory says:

Her style is often strange, sometimes fabulous, and I love her too much to really criticise her.

  7. Dani2 says:

Fug, I love Cate but this is not a good look.

    • Stef Leppard says:

Hideous pants. And I really hope that ginormous bag she’s carrying is luggage and not a purse.

    • Esmom says:

Other than the heinous pants I think she looks great. Love her style 99% of the time.

  8. antisocial says:

I did not think any piece of clothing existed that the ethereal Blanchett could not carry – fiercely.

    But those pants. Seriously?

Short stumpy legs allusion and dirty diaper.

That pant style should be retired indefinitely. For Everyone. If Blanchett can’t pull it off, no one can.

    • emmie_a says:

I’ve seen people with long slim legs wear these pants with great success. Kate has a great figure but just doesn’t have the best build for this style.

    • Chris says:

Have to agree here…..even she can’t make those trousers acceptable to me. Lovely palette all over though…..I want to dash out and buy a pake blush top, pronto.
I imagine if I wore those things I’d be hitching them up the whole time, as I do with my present infuriating jeans that are meant to lie on the hips.

  9. T.Fanty says:

I’m still mad at Cate for her shameless Oscar shilling and refusal to acknowledge any shadiness with the whole Woody Allen thing. While I understand a willingness not to take sides, she didn’t even make the effort to lower her profile the week the accusation came out. To me, she showed that nothing was as important to her as getting her Oscar, and that disappoints me a little.

    • poppy says:

me too. woody allen has ruined many things.

    • Ag says:

i agree. i can’t look at her in the same light anymore.

    • Nuty says:

I wonder why people don’t shade Colin Firth for working with Woody Allen. Perhaps he gets a pass because he is a man.

      • Dio says:

Colin seems to be a quiet humble man, which I love! She on the other hand seems to have gotten quite the big head lately. Stop drinking the koolaid…

      • Ag-UK says:

        Or Emma Stone

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Not from me, he doesn’t. And he was my forever crush. I’ll never forgive him and have never been so disappointed in a celebrity in my life.

      • L says:

He was quiet because the movie bombed, critically and box office wise.

    • (Original, not CDAN) Violet says:

      Agreed.

Also? Those diaper pants look absolutely ridiculous.

    • Cheryl says:

Yes. Halo tarnished permanently. Hard not to judge her by those (non) actions.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree, T.Fanty. I’ll never look at her the same way. And those pants look seriously stupid.

    • L says:

SO, she should have stopped going to all the events she had agreed to go for something that she has nothing to do with her? I don’t see Emma stone getting as much hate, she agreed to do another movie with him even after all the issue.

  10. maybeiamcrazy says:

Nobody can look that regal while wearing a drop-crotch pants. Only Blanchett.

  11. paola says:

    Note to Justin Bieber.

this is the only acceptable way of wearing drop crotch pants.

  12. Vera says:

Cate is one of my fashion goddesses, but those pants are a misfire.

    • JennySerenity says:

I came here to say exactly this. It pains me to harshly critique my Fashion Goddess, but just NO.

  13. MrsBPitt says:

Nope…drop-crotch is a def no-no on EVERYONE! I, too, love, Cate’s bag, though! It’s gorgeous!

  14. Leaflet says:

I’m sorry, Kate just looks like business -diaper -baby -bottom to me. That parachute looking shirt is not helping her in any way. The only person that I even kind of liked in the drop -crotch pants was Halle Berry. And only kind if. I forgive Kate and Halle. Bad fashion does happen to good people.

  15. sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

I basically detest this type of trousers, they are visually ugly, as if you’re wearing diapers/nappies and they are also uncomfortable (thried ones on at a store once… )

  16. Francis says:

I love her style usually, she turned it out at this years Academy Awards. She’s so classy looking.
I don’t like drop pants on anyone, from Halle B to Cate B. But I do love all al of her accessories. The pants NO, but the rest of the outfit is lovely ,classic.

Still Cate is so elegant and sophisticated looking usually, so one bad pair of pants doesn’t bother me. Love her.

  17. SuePerb says:

There is a french film La Cérémonie which is more or less the adaptation of the play. It also stars Isabelle Huppert. I wonder if they cast Isabelle because she was so great in the French film. There is also a Hollywood film already adapted starring Glenda Jackson and Susannah York , so I don’t think another one is needed

Love the lady behind Cate. Looks like she is saying “Hoist your pants up, ok, slow down and I will do it for you”

  18. cubfan34 says:

    It looks uncomfortable.

  19. yas says:

THE MAIDS is playing as part of Lincoln Center Festival; it’s not Broadway.

  20. smee says:

Designers gotta sell ya something, right? It looks better from some angles, but it’s still effed up (and I’m in the Cult of Cate!)

I saw a lot of this in vacation this summer, including the more hippy type that almost look like a skirt. It gets your attention bc it’s different, but that’s about as far as it goes. At least in hot locations it makes sense……..

  21. Graham_Fan says:

Those pants are hideous and should be banned from being worn in public. I have to give her props though for still managing to look classy.

  22. eliza says:

    I hate those pants.

  23. Kiddo says:

It looked like she left price tags on her sandals and then I realized it was the design. I hate the cut of those pants on anyone. That lady to the back, yappin’ as they go, looks like a hoot.

(I just used the word hoot, pfft!)

  24. Jenny12 says:

She really is the Meryl Streep of this generation- amazing talent.

  25. lucy2 says:

Love her and she can usually make anything work, but…not those pants.
I’d love to see her in a play, hopefully she does more in NY.

  26. tracking says:

It’s a dumb look, even on her. Her skin is spectacular.

  27. Louisa says:

Hate the pants and hated ‘The Maids’. I saw it last weekend and was beside myself with excitement at being able to get tickets. So disappointing. Isabella Hubert’s French accent was so strong she could barely be understood. And she and Cate were playing sisters?? Lots of dry humping, up-close crotch shots and excessive use of the “c” word made for a very strange theatre experience…..

    • Adrien says:

“Lots of dry humping, up-close crotch shots and excessive use of the “c” word”…..I’m sold. Where can I watch this?

  28. Sarah says:

Hmmm, “unfortunately”, I don’t have a thigh gap, so all I think when I see these is, man, chaffing! I prefer to have some fabric between my thighs to avoid that uncomfortable rub.

  29. Hissyfit says:

I love everything except that pants! Drop crotch pants needs to go away!

  30. AlmondJoy says:

The blouse, handbag and sandals are fine. The pants are supremely fug. I’ve never been a fan of her styling, though.

  31. Penelope says:

She looks absolutely ridiculous. A rare fashion misstep/ fail for her.

  32. Mel says:

Meh, after the crocheted-blanket horror of a “gown” she wore a few years ago, this is a very minor eyesore.
Come to think of it, I believe I’ve seen her really well-dressed exactly twice over the years.
She is an excellent actress, sounds like a marvellous person, many would find her quite beautiful, and many would find her a horrible dresser – all at the same time.
Why should that be a problem?
I have no problem with that.
What does annoy me no end is the people who cannot seem to accept that there is no need to idealie/idolise others, to the point where EVERYTHING they do is just “perfect” and practically divine (as in: demi-godly), simply because they are who they are.
That’s extremely infantile. In my opinion, yes.

  33. Lola says:

Don’t like the pants. And, with such pale skin tone, maybe more color not pastels…

  34. Deedee says:

Even the great Cate cannot make this work.

  35. melain says:

    Cate. You broke my heart.

  36. LAK says:

On the one hand I hate drop crotch trousers, but on the other, I love this outfit. Must be Cate!!

  37. Maraleah says:

    Fug.

These pants could have been done right,.. Try again.

  38. serena says:

I hate drop crotch pants! Even on Cate Blanchett they look so awful!
