Joaquin Phoenix’s special brand of crazy really is an act, according to his friends. We’ve obviously heard that before, but they’ve told Fox News’ Pop Tarts that Joaquin is so into his acting crazy shtick that he actually wanted to be mocked at the Academy Awards – and he even knew about the parodies. They also claim Ben Stiller was going along with Joaquin’s joke and not actually making fun of him – at least not in a mean-spirited way.
In 2005, Joaquin Phoenix was an awards season favorite following his portrayal of Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, but fast-forward four years and he’s the newest object of unshaven mockery.
While presenting alongside Natalie Portman, Ben Stiller (donning an over-sized scruffy wig and fake beard) chomped loudly on his gum, prompting Portman (who was also in on the act) to chastise him. Stiller then pulled a Phoenix and stuck his gum on the podium.
So while we’re all laughing at these people pretending to be the actor-turned-rapper, it seems he is actually the one secretly laughing at all of us.
“Joaquin wanted this, of course he knew (about the parodies) because it’s all part of a very strategic plan,” said our inside source. “He is selling it all as a documentary not about his musical career but the whole issue of public persona. It’s all a big joke and he’s not pursuing rapping seriously no matter what he says.”
Phew – Ben Stiller can probably breathe a sigh of relief too.
“Ben (Stiller) was just going along with the joke that Joaquin started,” added our insider. “He wasn’t poking fun at him, there are no hard feelings.”

I’m not totally sure I buy this. There are a lot of arguments either way, in terms of Joaquin’s sanity. It seems like the general public is more concerned about Joaquin than his close friends are, which does lend credit to the idea that he’s just playing with us and doing some sort of experiment.
However Dr. Drew Pinsky (of “Loveline” and “Celebrity Rehab” fame) wrote a piece for Radar explaining his concerns about Joaquin in detail, and pointed out that several of his behaviors are symptomatic of severe mental illness and almost impossible to mimic, even by a trained actor.
Nonetheless, my money is on Joaquin pulling one over on the public. If so, he’s definitely provided some great comedic fodder.
Here’s Ben Stiller and Natalie Portman poking fun of Phoenix at the Oscars on Sunday night. Header of Joaquin before his “Late Show” appearance on February 11th. Image thanks to Fame.
Ben Stiller and Seth Rogen/James Franco’s bit was the best part of the Oscars on Sunday. And I truly don’t think Joaquin is crazy since he is being filmed for a documentary by Casey Affleck…it’s like he’s setting himself up for a comeback.
I’m with Dr. Drew. I think there is alot more going on here than what Joaquin is trying to convince the public of. I think he is actually trying to cover up what is really going on (his own dissent into mental illness/addiction) with this “mockumentary” thing.
And, never underestimate the power of denial (close family members going along).
its time to drop the act.
Joaquin is awesome, he’s making fun of the whole “star system”, “celebrity for nothing-system”, he had me cracking up when watching Letterman, he actually brought the old David back! Awesome.
As for Dr.Drew, he’s just full of it, I can’t stand that guy, he’s been exploiting people’s pain for years and is so f’ing self righteous it’s sickening, he is truly no better than Dr. Phil.
Methinks Pinsky underestimates the talent of Phoenix.
That’s all.
I don’t think jp is ill/having a breakdown; I believe that he is trying to make an “artistic” statement. I used to be a big fan; I now think he’s a jerk. This whole act screams of contempt towards the very people who got him to his current position, where he can “leave the business” and create this persona. Who is going to find this crap impressive? Is there anyone outside of other Hollywood jackasses who think this is insightful?
I did think the Stiller/Portman bit was funny.
Joaquin, give it up before people really lose interest. Seriously. It’s too weird and too pathetic to be even remotely comedic.
A great Portrayal of Charles Manson.
Insight into his dream roll.
All he needs is a swastika carved between his eyes.
freak
An act? Mental illness?
It’s the drugs.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Same was with Heath.
unless he is actually mentally ill, he seems like a pretentious asshole. i think he was serious at first and then when he fell on his face, he decided it should all be an act.
If this is an act then he is a major-league asshole. What would make it OK to make fun of those with mental problems? I’m with Ned – the dude is stoned out of his mind, and pulling the old “I meant to do that” routine.
I’m not sure what the truth is. I hope and pray that it is an act. My fear and eyes tell me that it is not. I hope he gets help and that the people around him are in recovery and truly want what’s best for him and that he is open and willing to listen to what he needs from healthy souls.
Remember when K-Fed claimed he INTENTIONALLY made crappy music, just to mess with us?
I’m with Jill on that.
Don’t know. Don’t care. I’m totally over him. I did enjoy Ben Stiller’s routine though (especially Natalie’s Hasidic Meth Lab line).
@ Lucky ~
Contempt at the people who got him in his current position. I think Joaquin got himself into his successful position of acting. Yes fans are important…. but they don’t beat out incredible talent.
Either way – I hope it’s an act and if it’s not I hope he finds the strength to help himself.
he reminds me of forrest gump at the end of his cross country run…
Ok, this just disturbs me beyond anything. Mental illness is NOT something to be joking about….ever. I seriously hope Pheonix is “acting” but if he is, I’m really pissed about it. I read celebrity gossip to get away from my life’s work, which is working with the mentally ill…..this is NOT FUNNY TO ME.
Phoenix appears to have an overinflated sense of self importance…get over yourself man…this is sooooo boring!!!!
