Dwayne Johnson will play Black Adam in DC’s ‘Shazam’: good pick?

Dwayne Johnson

Yay, a reason to write about The Rock! I can never pass up such an opportunity. He’s giving his serious face in this photo because he’s signed on for a serious role, sort of. The “serious” remark stems from DC’s rumored resolution to allow no humor in their comic book movies. (“Why so serious?” asked the Joker.) DC may have changed its mind. According to Slashfilm, DC’s new Shazam movie will be different and separate from all the Justice League stuff. Shazam will be fun, starting with the casting news of its baddie.

Dwayne Johnson has signed on to play Black Adam, a complex anti-hero and sometimes supervillain. The rumors have been buzzing for months. DC terribly wanted The Rock. They wanted him so bad that they let him choose whether to play the hero or the villain. Johnson announced his final decision on his Twitter page:

I’d ask whether The Rock was a good pick for this role, but that’s a silly question. Of course he’s a great pick. His presence guarantees a film’s success. Seriously. Look at his box-office record. Even Hercules made a little money despite a ginormous budget and more cheese than my favorite panini sandwich.

So … Shazam. The titular character is formerly known as Captain Marvel, but the name was changed for obvious reasons. I don’t know if this is a great move for The Rock. His career survives every movie, even the worst ones. I would have preferred to see him in a Marvel flick, uttering some droll one-liners while raising the People’s Eyebrow. If anyone can inject some life into DC, it’s The Rock. The lightning power, super strength, and magic capabilities are mere bonuses to everything the man has to offer.

Didn’t Shaq already make this movie? Or was that Kazam? I always get my kid movies based on exclamatory phrases confused.

I’ll watch that man in anything.

Side note, on fashion – if The Rock, a super macho character, can show up in a great, properly fitted suit, what with his unusually (deliciously) large frame, other male stars have no excuse to show up looking sloppy or wearing jeans on the RC.

    • Detritus says:

Seconded – I would watch that man in anything.
Granted I didn’t see Hercules in theatre because well, it looked like a dud. I will totally see it in video though.

Also seconded – the man knows how to get shit tailored right.

@INeedANap: Thirded on the suit thing. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. If more men understood the effect of a well-tailored suit on many women, the world would be a far more stylish place.

@Detritus: if you can catch an end of run screening of “Hercules” in theatre, it’s actually quite worth it (well, I thought it was). It’s just a big fun summer movie with a surprisingly solid cast (the woman who plays Atalanta is AWESOME and the guy who plays the mute has some surprisingly heartbreaking scenes for a big popcorn flick).

The man does indeed look fiiiiiiiine in a suit. And a loincloth. He makes ALL the girlie in me say, ” Yes, please!”

I need a comic book detox , I think that I will watch The Notebook and then decide if I want to see another comic book movie!

  4. MonicaQ says:

Aw man, NOW I have to see a DC movie. J/k.

  5. Kali says:

Has the studio actually said officially “we are making a Shazam movie”? It feels like the most we’ve heard about the movie for the last 3-4 months has been from Mr Johnson himself. I’m mostly just nervous for him, I really want it to be a big huge fat stonking hit.

  6. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Rock around the clock. Love him.

  7. Chris says:

Liked him more as a wrestler. Loved his catch phrase “Know your damn role and shut your mouth” I also liked the way he used to answer questions by talking about himself in the third person “The Rock says this……” And of course his signature finishing move The People’s Elbow! Ah good times.

  8. Bliss says:

Probably but to me, only Batman is interresting when it comes to DC.

  9. NorthernGirl_20 says:

Yes!! He looks so hot in that pic .. gah I have such a crush on him lol..

My husband went and saw Hercules. He was pretty pi$$ed off about how bad it was. I asked him if he’d never go see another Rock movie. He said oh he’d go……….but he was just pissed at what terrible scripts he’s given. Even straight men love the Rock. He’ll survive a DC comic movie.

  11. TX says:

I’m in. I’m in for whatever he does, anytime, always. Love ya Rock!

  12. Jaderu says:

I saw Hercules in the theater and honestly it was pretty good. If you’re expecting King Lear or something you shouldn’t be going to a Dwayne Johnson movie anyway. Actually, on second thought I would totally see Dwayne Wayne in King Lear. That’s one of the reasons I love The Rock. He doesn’t pretend to be some special snowflake “I’m an A-C-T-O-R”. He makes entertaining movies and they make bank. Plus the eye brow raise gives me the tingly winglies.

  13. Lisa Danielle says:

How great would it be if Billy said “Shazam” (needed to turn into Captain Marvel) and The Rock shouted “IT DOESN’T MATTER what your name is!” ? Anyways, I was kind of hoping that if Shazam showed up it would be as an anti-hero to Superman for at least half a movie. It’s always fun to see Superman get beaten by a ten-year old.

  14. Size Does Matter says:

DC, I too know how it feels to want the Rock so terribly.

  15. Stacy says:

    Yay!!
