Ryan Gosling & Eva Mendes named their daughter Esmeralda Amada Gosling

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes welcomed their first child, a baby girl, back in September. Since then, we haven’t heard much about or from them. “Sources” kept going on and on about Ryan crying in the delivery room and how Eva is super-happy with motherhood, but no one gave much time to those stories because A) the quotes were mostly generalizations about how ALL parents feel and B) because none of the “sources” had any info about the baby name. Well, finally we know the girl’s name. And we know because TMZ got their hands on the birth certificate. The baby’s name is… Esmeralda Amada Gosling.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes’ baby name may have been inspired by one of the characters she played in a Mark Wahlberg movie. Gosling and Mendes named their daughter Esmeralda Amada … according to the baby’s birth certificate, obtained by TMZ.

Amada was the name of Eva’s character in “We Own the Night” — and Esmeralda, well … maybe she’s a big fan of the ’96 Disney flick “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”

[From TMZ]

Esmeralda sounds like a mouthful for a baby, which is why Bedhead & I think that they’re probably calling her Esme. Esme is hipster-friendly, with literary flair because of JD Salinger’s “For Esmé—with Love and Squalor” short story. The problem with calling her Esme is that it’s also a Twilight reference. They could always call her Essie!! I’m not a big fan of Amada, mostly because I keep reading it as “armada” and who wants to think of boats when they’re looking at a baby?!

Baby’s first invasion of privacy! I had my money on Blissful Spice Latte Gosling.

  2. embertine says:

    Terry Pratchett reference.

  3. K. says:

    Cute name.

  4. maybeiamcrazy says:

Esme is a Twilight reference?! I loved that name.

    • Abbott says:

I thought it was The Claw’s cat from Inspector Gadget?

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

I hate-read the books with my friend (and I’m not ashamed to admit we did because we had a blast making fun of the writing – it’s hilarious, especially the last, soft-porn one) and as far as i remember, the vampire mother’s name in Twilight is Esme and the daughter of Sparkles and McBitey was named Renesme.

    • Petrichor says:

If my first-born had been a girl, he would have been Esme. Then I found out it was a Twilight name, and hubs & I almost decided to change our girl name choice. But, baby came out a boy, so we didn’t have to worry about it!

Funnily enough, given how much we loved Esme, when I was pregnant with #2 it wasn’t even on the table (and we ended up having a girl).

    • A~ says:

Esme is also from a JD Salinger story, “For Esme with Love and Squalor.”

  5. QQ says:

I am latina and i can vouch for the terribleness of this name

Is like a bad 80s telenovela coming to life..is like how everyone in Latin America went and called their girls “Estefania” after the Grimaldis irrespective of how INCONGRUOUS is sounded??

think about it “Emerald LOVED Gosling”… That is pretty Much a solid NO even if they INVERTED that equation it would greatly improve in both languages AND make sense!! It’s just not easy roll off the tongue or well arranged….. Bet you she is an adorable looking kid though cause these two are Pree-ttay!

    • maybeiamcrazy says:

Now i remembered. There was a telenovella named Esmeralda. I remember it popping up whenever i opened TV when i was a kid.

    • Leftovers says:

Not a fan of any of the names personally, but “Amada” also means beloved, so it’s not all horrible.

      • QQ says:

Oh I know that Leftovers, as i Pointed out is not that either part is “meaningless” it’s just not easy roll-off-The-Tongue or a good combo either way or particularly passing the superme court test LOL or a good match to her last name so to speak? And like i said upthread even just putting the middle name first would have been a good move

      • Leftovers says:

It certainly is a tongue twister in the making!
Also, thanks for the ambivalent memories of watching South American novelas dubbed in Brazilian Portuguese (I’m not Brazilian), and all the “Esmeraldas”, “Estrelinhas” and “Candelarias”. Ha, to be 12 again.

    • Charlie says:

There was a telenovela called Esmeralda! Fernando Colunga, the alpha male of every telenovela ever was in it! It was hugely popular here when I was a kid, my grandma loved it. Esmerlada was blind, so old grannies used to pay a Mass for her to see again. Aaaw, this brings so many memories.

It is a very telenovelish name. I think it’s also popular in the Romani community, and it reminds me of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

    • lita says:

This! I’m latina too and I also think the name sounds as if it came straight out of a telenovela, a really old one. I actually like Esmeralda, but it’s pretty old fashioned, same with Amada.

    • Franny Days says:

I work in childcare and this made me chuckle because there is a mother with the name Esmerelda and her daughter’s name is Estefania :).

  6. NewWester says:

Wasn’t that the name of one of Samantha’s aunts on Bewitched? Still a very pretty name.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

That’s exactly what I thought. Witch name. Don’t love it, but not my baby.

    • RobN says:

It was; it was my first thought when I heard the name.

    • Malificent says:

That’s what I thought of — Samantha’s fabulous, conniving, over-the-top mother was named Esmeralda. Which makes me like this name because she was a great character.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I feel kind of left out, because Esmeralda doesn’t make me think of ANYTHING. I didn’t watch Hunchback, I barely remember Bewitched, and I haven’t seen any telenovelas.

  7. Susan says:

I kept thinking while reading it was a typo and Amanda.

  8. Jaderu says:

What’s Amada? Nothing. What’s Amada with you?
    *stage hook*
Actually I think its a pretty name.

    • lower-case deb says:

her name sounds like a sentence. Es me, Ralda. Amada gosling for you. Do you like goslings?

    • LadyMTL says:

LOL…now I’m going to be saying that all day. “What’s Amada with you?” 😛

I actually like the two names, just not together. Esmeralda is nice, Amada is nice, but one right after the other is way too vowel-heavy and doesn’t flow. Ah well.

    • QQ says:

LOLOLOL No but for realsiez Amada means “Loved” in spanish and is usuallly a grandma’s or great grandma name

    • nicegirl says:

hilarious! what’s amada with you? cracking up

  9. StormsMama says:

Esmeralda (not Esmerelda as people would often assume I meant) was my grandmother’s name and everyone called her Lala. I love the name. Not crazy about middle name though.

  10. InvaderTak says:

I feel like Esmeralda doesn’t jive with Gosling. Like my cousin and his wife who put Gabriella with a very Polish last name. But then again, Esmeralda is a nice tribute to Eva’s heritage.

  11. stellalovejoydiver says:

and that name does sound like a ship, but better than most celebrity baby names.

  12. Gina says:

I love the name Esmeralda. She looks a lot older than Ryan. Makes no difference now, but it might in the future. In our society it’s completely appropriate for 53 year old George to marry 35 year old whatever her name is…..but an older woman with a younger man still gets the head shake. Demi knows what I’m talking about, so does Susan Sarandon, Madonna…..you know where I’m going with this.

  13. Boodiba says:

My takeaway is that the father is so much better looking with sunglasses on cause you can’t see that his eyes are too close together.

    • Josefa says:

He’s so droopy looking. I’ll never understand why so many people find him spectacularly hot.

      • Adele Dazeem says:

I don’t get it either. I really don’t find him incredibly attractive. Maybe it’s the chin? Small eyes? My husband is way better looking than Ryan Gosling.

      • Gina says:

I’m with you on that. He seems as desirable as a slushy in January. Same thing with Adam Levine….I’m certain I would win at arm wrestling and I’m not a big person. How he ever got the Sexiest Man Alive in People Mag is beyond me…don’t know if Ryan did. But…if Burt Reynolds held the title on that bear rug, I guess Ryan could be lying on a futon….hammock?

      • Dana m says:

Perhaps these women are attracted to his mousey voice.

I do like the name. Esmeralda is a classic in my book. I grew up watching telenovelas with my grandmother.

      • M.A.F. says:

I still see him as the goofy kid from the New MMC (Mickey Mouse Club for you young folks). I didn’t get it when I was 12 and I still don’t get it at 32.

      • Gina says:

@ Dana. I just love the name Esmeralda. I was named after my mom, Eugenia…kind of glad she did a little revising!

      • Josefa says:

        @Gina
Adam Levine is another one I don’t get. He sings like a castrated sheep, his face is quite common imo and I don’t like his body, that mix of skinny while ripped is… weird. And I thought this way before I noticed he was a douchebag.

I can get the crushes on Ryan as he really seems like a great guy, but facially I find him so… average. There’s better looking guys at college.

      • Gina says:

@ Josefa: I mentioned that somewhere above. Adam Levine is a total douche. Little scrawny creepy looking ahole. I won’t watch the Voice bc of him! Tiny men don’t do it for me….and when he dyed his hair blonde. Just ewww, no words….!

  14. lenje says:

Ha, it looks like I’m the minority here so far — because I love the name! I found it unique, yet beautiful. This is the kind of name young parents in my country tend to pick for their baby girls (or, if they’re Muslim, they’ll have Arabic names).

  15. Josefa says:

Esmeralda Amada literally translates to “Loved Emerald”. It sounds like a name for a telenovela character. Or a drag queen. But I guess it’s alright by HW baby name standards.

  16. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I actually kinda like the name. Hunchback of Notre Dame is my absolute favorite Disney movie EVER….so that is what I thought about when I heard it. But this is a great, unique name in the land of other ‘unique’ names such as Pilot Inspector……it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s not embarrassing.

  17. Greyson says:

I don’t like this name! It doesn’t go well with her last name! “Amada” is a cool choice though.

Snark time – Every time I look at pictures of Ryan looking chic and Eva’s terrible accessories (those hats..bad turban) I think he could have done so much better.. Oh well!

    • OriginalTessa says:

I find her to be much more attractive than him. When he had his original nose, no one even looked twice at him.

  18. Shijel says:

I think it’s beautiful. It’s a bit cumbersome but that’s what I like about it.

  19. Jess says:

I like the name Esmeralda. Maybe because I loved Samantha’s mom on bewitched!

    • Lucky Charm says:

Samantha’s mom was Endora. The housekeeper/nanny was Esmeralda (she was the one who kept disappearing every time Darrin was around). When my kids were young, there were many times I wished I could just “Yoo-hoo, Esmeralda!” and she would pop in!

When I was little, I loved to watch Bewitched. I was convinced that I was from a family of witches, too, because I noticed that all the witches names on the show ended in the letter “A”, and my mom’s, grandma’s & mine also ended in “A”, LOL!

  20. Marianne says:

I like Esmeralda and Amada but not together. It doesnt really roll off the tongue nicely. I mean both names have such prominent M and D sounds, both end in A. ( syllables in total….just a mouthful.

Its a lot nicer than most celebrities children’s names.

  21. Claudia says:

I like it, especially when shortened to Esme. Who cares about Twilight?!

  22. pnichols says:

    That name sucks

  23. andypandy says:

Esmeralda is my 75 yr old aunts name and She was named after her GrandAunt so there’s that (for the Love of God Eva do not but Essie in a turban ) 🙂
Anyway congrats to them both a baby is such a blessing

P.S I will admit Ryan doesn’t always come across that attractive in stills but in motion/on film he really does have something I think he’s quite a good actor ( when he’s properly cast )

  24. Penelope says:

I don’t hate it–actually, it’s kind of pretty. Much nicer than the dumb, attention-seeking names a lot of Hollywood types give their kids.

  25. starrywonder says:

Why is TMZ publishing a baby’s name before the parents do? I am getting sick of that site.

  26. Marianela says:

Esmeralda is a nice name. The gypsy of Notre Dame the paris of Victor Hugo has the same name. it’s fantastic

  27. Hissyfit says:

Esmeralda is a cute name but I’m not feeling the Amada. Anyway, Ryan looks really hot in the photos!

  28. word says:

I heard Eva wanted a traditional Spanish name, so went with Esmeralda. Amada is a name that is in her family, I believe her maternal grandmother’s name.

  29. meow says:

Esmeralda is a “family name”, right? So good for them. Baby will pick her own name, whatever she wants.

  30. Xyz says:

Sounds like Ryan had absolutely no say in the name.

    • ennie says:

Why? because it sounds more Latin? Well, he chose a Latin (Cuban)-american woman, so he must like the names of her daughter too.

  31. A Fan says:

    Much better than Wyatt…

[*…or Apple or Honor or Haven or Harlow or Sparrow or…*]

  32. Anne says:

No, not feeling it. The first name is fine on it’s own, it’s a choice, but the two names together are (be kind, be kind) not my cup of tea. Someone up-thread said “cumbersome.” That’s the word for it. It’s such a heavy tag.

  33. TOPgirl says:

That name doesn’t sit well with me. Why do celeb baby names just sound so weird most of the time?

  34. Lizzy1013 says:

Some one else pointed out that on the birth certificate it says “Eva Mendez” but her last name is actually spelled “mendes”. Any one know anything About this? Maybe it’s a fake?

  35. Fluffy Socks says:

Isn’t Ryan a Disney fan? Maybe Esmeralda was his fav princess and he choose to name his baby girl like that?
