Will Ryan Gosling abandon his indie street-cred for big-budget studio films?

Yes, we’re still talking about the casting rumors for Doctor Strange. THAT should be the movie. I would totally watch a movie about the trouble Marvel has with finding the perfect actor to play Doctor Strange. We’ve gone from the shortlist of Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy, Johnny Depp and then Joaquin Phoenix, to the point right now where it’s “basically every actor under the age of 50.” Variety says the current shortlist includes: Ethan Hawke, Jared Leto, Oscar Isaac, Matthew McConaughey, Ewan McGregor and Jake Gyllenhaal. Out of that list… I’d probably like to see Ewan in the role. Right? Anyway, The Hollywood Reporter says that Ryan Gosling (of all people) is also meeting with Marvel about the role.

Ryan Gosling may finally be ready to take on a big studio franchise. The actor has in the past resisted joining superhero-style tentpole movies, especially those that would require him to appear in sequels. But now there are signs that Gosling might be softening his stance.

In recent weeks, the 33-year-old actor has met with Marvel Studios to discuss starring in the title role in Doctor Strange, and he is fielding an offer to topline Summit’s adaptation of The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero. Sources also say he is being courted to star in Suicide Squad, David Ayer’s take on the DC Comics supervillain team at Warner Bros.

Marvel has been casting a wide net for Strange ever since talks with Joaquin Phoenix broke down. Sources say that Jared Leto and Justin Theroux have been chasing the role, while Ethan Hawke’s name also has surfaced as has Keanu Reeves. It is unclear when the movie would go into production but Marvel has staked out a July 8, 2016 release dates.

Houdini, with Dean Parisot attached to direct, was to have starred Johnny Depp but the actor will be sailing with a new installment of Pirates of the Caribbean for almost half of 2015. Summit ideally would like to get going before that. Ayer’s Suicide Squad is still in early development and the script is being worked on. But that is not stopping the filmmaker and the studio from making overtures for what is to be an A-list ensemble piece filled with colorful anti-heroes. Sources say that Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Tom Hardy also are fielding offers. Warners had no comment.

Now, there is no guarantee that Gosling will spark to any of these projects. The actor has been perfectly content making more modest movies such as The Place Beyond the Pines or focusing his attention on directing. Even when he does a studio movie it’s not the usual fare, instead opting for projects such as Crazy, Stupid, Love and Gangster Squad — both for Warner Bros. — for which the chances of sequels are small. Even now, he is in pre-production on The Nice Guys, a 1970s noir co-written and being directed by Shane Black, and sources say he and co-star Russell Crowe took pay cuts from their usual fees.

Unlike most other actors in his age group, Gosling can be especially choosy. He has said no to superhero fare before due to his desire not to be tied down to future movies. For instance, Gosling was keen on taking the role of Hal Jordan in Green Lantern, but balked at a contract that called for sequels, so Ryan Reynolds got the part and the movie flopped. Gosling did attach himself at one point to a Logan’s Run remake but that was only because it was going be directed by his Drive helmer Nicolas Refn and he felt comfortable with the Danish director and believed in the vision. Whether sequels were ever envisioned is unclear since both ended up moving off of the project.

Still, some producers and agents aren’t entirely convinced we’re seeing a new Gosling. “I’ll believe it when I see it,” jokes one producer.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

I had no memory of that Green Lantern casting backstory. I completely forgot that Gosling was up for that. Well, I’m glad he didn’t do it. Ryan Reynolds has barely recovered from that crapfest. As for Gosling maybe showing interest in some big tent-pole franchises or big-budget studio films… perhaps. When actors become parents, they tend to want to take part in some bigger films, films that people will actually see, and films that might be more kid-friendly. Plus, the money’s better. And to top it all off, Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, Lost River, got laughed out of Cannes this year. He might want to focus on directing, but no one else is interested in seeing Gosling’s “vision.” So he might want to reboot his career, I’m just saying.

I’d watch him in anything, even a silent black and white slapstick film.

(What is that on his arm? is that a tattoo? Please say that’s not a tattoo….)

    • Mrs. Wellen Melon says:

It looked like a chicken claw to me so I googled. I was loving the idea that Gosling is so committed to walking in the Indy Way that he would have a random chicken claw tat.

Sadly, Google tells me It’s a wolf paw.

      • Dorothy#1 says:

LOL!! Chicken claw. 🙂 you would think with all his money he could afford a better tattoo. That looks like his friend did it in his basement.

      • Appleminis says:

Well actually I think I read somewhere that he did it himself!

  2. JJ says:

Hopefully that never happens. Gosling hasn’t given a good performance since Drive. If he gets cast as Dr Strange, he, Eva, their dogs and the kid will do photo ops every 2 day.

Now that Joaquin doesn’t want to do it, maybe Marvel can convince Leto. Theroux and Hawke also seem like good choices. Strange that Marvel seems to have a problem getting interesting actors to commit, considering the amount of cash and exposure to top notch film making that comes with the gig.

  3. ML says:

His film didn’t get laughed out of Cannes, it was 1 or 2 douchey critics who already had their minds made up abut the film before even seeing it who said it and of course every sensationalizing news site ran with that because it would get more clicks. Seriously, if Holly Moters can get a standing ovation at Cannes and critical acclaim, which was a steaming pile of pretentious poo, then how bad can his film honestly be?

    • Hmmm says:

Hey, I loved Holy Motors! Gosling’s trailer looked laughably bad IMHO.

    • Mia4S says:

“Laughed out” no, but Warner Brothers couldn’t sell it off fast enough and the release date remains “vague”. That’s doesn’t happen to a movie people think is good. It’s not a positive situation.

Kids are expensive. Maybe he’s just being practical.

    • stellalovejoydiver says:

I think he has potential as a director, but he is a bad screenwriter. Maybe with a better script from someone else he would fare better.

  4. Chris says:

I’d rather see Ewan Bremner in the role. He was born to play a character called Dr Strange.

  5. Sumodo1 says:

He’s too bland to be Dr. Strange. (*ducks*)

  6. JWQ says:

I hope it’ s McGregor! I don’ t know who Oscar Isaac is, I can’ t see Tom Hardy or Jake Gyllenhaal in that role (but I would be fine with them), and I cannot stand the others for one reason or another, Gosling included!

  7. Valerie says:

They have the casting list all wrong. They really should consider Pedro Pascal, he would be perfect for the role of Doctor Strange. Just like Marvel took a relative chance on Chris Pratt and that elevated his career, I bet this movie could be a similar kind of vehicle for Pascal.

    • mom2two says:

I’d agree with you on this. Marvel did take a chance on Chris Pratt but they also did get some names attached to Guardians (in admittedly smaller roles): Zoe Saldana, Glenn Close, John C Reilly, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. Whoever plays Doctor Strange is going to have to carry that movie, Pratt had help from the other Guardians, and it seems like Marvel wants someone with a name. Pascal would be a great choice, but he is circling to play Pontius Pilate in the Ben Hur remake and isn’t a big enough name for them.
Out of the current (rumored) list my personal favorites are Jared Leto or Ewan Mc Gregor. Ryan Gosling is all wrong for the part and while his stance might be softening on the franchise picture, there was a rumor last year that he also took a meeting about Star Wars. Gosling might not want to do these franchise pictures…but he has not had a hit movie in a while, so he might have to change up his strategy.

      • Valerie says:

Fair enough and good point about them having more of ensemble cast for GotG, and that certainly helped, but I also think a huge part of the success of that movie was the brilliant marketing campaign for the film. The role of Doctor Strange could also lend itself to some very creative marketing ideas, and it seems they would have a little more of a head start with the public’s overall familiarity with that character compared to Guardians. I’m sure they could also find a way to assemble a great supporting cast that would allow Pascal to shine.

But you’re right – this is really more of a fantasy and they clearly want a larger name to carry this movie.

I’m not excited about any of the names on this list though, none of them seem to be charismatic enough to pull this off (especially Gosling). I suppose I’d pick McGregor as well.

  8. Viker says:

He doesnt need a studio film to reboot; he just needs a movie where he doesnt walk around staring at people without saying a word.

  9. Bridget says:

Marvel likes to make talent sign really long term contracts for principle parts, I would imagine that’s why its turning out to be more of a challenge to cast Dr Strange.

  10. Div says:

I wouldn’t be surprised. He’s a true indie guy, but the roles in his age range must have a lot of competitors with Tom Hardy, Fassbender, etc and he’s no longer the go to guy. It would be easy money, and would give him an edge over those guys.

  11. Lilacflowers says:

I volunteer to play Dr. Strange! But I demand a day in the casting of whoever plays the villain from the Dr Strange franchise plus there must be scenes between me and guest villains the Winter Soldier and Loki. My SHIELD contacts have to include Ming-Na Wen’s agent May.

  12. Dorky says:

I’m sorry, but I am always AMAZED that people find this guy attractive. He is so fug! And looks like he takes himself very very seriously. Bleah.
