Gerard Butler: ‘it would be great to settle down’

Gerard Butler gave a recent interview to a site called Deadline Scotland. I’ve never heard of this site, but it does seem like Butler gave the interview directly to them, and they got a decent scoop. In the interview, Butler gives up some juicy information on his love life, his career and how much he misses his homeland, Scotland.

Butler has lived, for the most part, in Los Angeles for almost a decade. Even with all of the California sun and all the wannabe actresses he can get his hands on, Gerry is still brooding for Scotland. He also talks about his “longing” to settle down, and why it‘s difficult for him to be in a long-term relationship. You can just tell, he’s talking about me. The only long-term relationship that Gerry could have would be with me, I know we could make it work. More from Deadline Scotland:

Scottish hunk Gerard Butler misses his homeland – despite the fact that he moved away as soon as he graduated in the early nineties. The actor now lives in the US, but says that his heart will always be in Scotland.

He said: “I miss the people and the countryside. Scotland is such a beautiful country and I know that whenever I return and look at that it’s like big therapy for me, everything relaxes, and I’m inspired and relaxed all at once… I also miss the people, the humour. I was out with a buddy of mine in New York who is Scottish and my side was splitting, just the way he said things. I miss that about being in Scotland – that sense of humour, that sharpness.”

But if rumours are true, Butler may soon be back in the country making a new film about the life of Robert Burns – a project he has always been keen to do. His high-flying Hollywood career takes him all over the world from his base in America – and it’s not just his homeland that he’s missing out on.

The 39-year-old revealed that he’s been unlucky in love – although he credits his loneliness with the success he has achieved. He said: “It would be great to settle down but at the same time I sometimes think if anything had happened differently and I was in a long-term relationship I wouldn’t be where I am now in my career.”

“If I’d had to make the sacrifices that a relationship would have required, I’d probably be a lot happier in some respects, but I wouldn’t have been as successful. I wouldn’t have advanced as far in my career.”

“A lot of happiness comes out of the excitement of watching your career progress and jump forwards and there’s also a lot of happiness you can get out of being in love and being in a relationship. The comfort and foundation you take from that is not something you get when you’re being crazy busy and successful and traveling all over the place because at the end of the day you’re not in a relationship.”

2009 sees the heartthrob on the screen in two new films – The Ugly Truth, a romantic comedy with Katherine Heigl, and lending his voice for The Mariner in the animated film Tales of the Black Freighter.

Can’t you just hear the catch in his throat when he talks about love? Like he’s had such success in his career, and now he wants to share it with someone. Swoon!

Jokes aside, I give Gerry a lot of credit for being realistic about career versus love life. I often wonder how some of these couples make it work when the two people in the relationship are traveling in different directions eight months out the year.

It’s also nice to see that the Robert Burns movie is back on – Butler has been trying to get the funding for that film for years. It’s his passion project, and I hope everything comes through.

Gerry looks great! I saw him in Philly 3 days ago at Starbucks and he is one fine looking man. Not to mention sweet, funny, nice. He flirted a little actually. I was floating for days, still am floating. His eyes are crazy green!

God, I would love to meet this man. Love love LOVE. And I’ve heard he’s a big flirt too. *swoon*

Sadly, he’s a little too old for me (I’m 20).

You know what I say? Gerry needs to try Jennifer Aniston. He’ll appreciate her need to have a private relationship, I’m sure. There’s always been something about Jen and John that squicks me out. I think it’s because John is an asshole and an immature famewhore.

Seriously, if those two start dating, I will cheer.
