Jennifer Lawrence flips off paps with a printed umbrella: rude or funny?

Jennifer Lawrence

I’ll admit to having too much fun with the title of this post. Jennifer Lawrence found a way to give the bird to the paparazzi without actually using her fingers. She’s flipped the cameras off before and caught some heat. The solution? JLaw bought the “F— the Rain” umbrella (it’s a real thing) and used it to send the paps a message. The Mail has clearer photos of the umbrella and Jennifer’s “wintry ensemble.” Jennifer wasn’t protecting herself from the sun or the rain. (It rarely rains in LA anyway.) She was protecting herself from the paps.

Is this umbrella offensive? I don’t think so. It’s a little immature, but this is a harmless and hilarious gesture. Jennifer was leaving Rachel Zoe’s office when these photos were taken. I wonder if Rachel has anything to do with JLaw’s 1990s style fixation.

More JLaw news: She bought a new house last week. She’s finally moving out of her tiny condo into an $8 million home with “park-like grounds” and a koi pond. You can see pictures of the gorgeous home here. Jennifer bought the house from Jessica Simpson, which amuses me. The farty legacy shall continue! JLaw is also reportedly house hunting in London’s Belsize Park near Chris Martin’s home. The Mail is making a fuss about this being Goop’s territory. Of course.

    Certainly harmless, not really hilarious

    • Ollyholly says:

I just came back to say, THEY BROKE UP! Our long Chris Martin nightmare is over, save us all.

  2. Ollyholly says:

Gets the job done all the same. Sure people will somehow find a way to be offended though, because there is nothing in the world more offensive or worth getting upset about than an umbrella. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. LadyMTL says:

Hahahahaha, I think it’s freaking funny. If that umbrella had been around when I was her age I would have aimed it at all kinds of people.

  4. InvaderTak says:

Another “don’t look at me! Don’t look at me!” Tactic. Using that will only get you papped more. Also, she can do better than Rachel Zoe.

    • Liv says:

I so hoped she would have got rid of Zoe by now! Ugh! Doesn’t she make her clients lose weight? Plus her style is lame and doesn’t fit Jennifer.

  5. Abbott says:

    I’m over her.

  6. Queen87 says:

Her new house is beautiful! I think she will make a good press tour.because she looks to me relax and happy

    • Lozface says:

Hang up the phone! Hang up the phone!!!! Best scene ever.

    • Algernon says:

I’ve been in that house. It’s a Buy-Taste place. Designed by a talented designer for an occupant who has no taste of her own (J-Simp). It’s bland and like trying to be comfortable on the showroom floor of a furniture store. I hope JLaw redecorates. The property has a lot of potential. All that faux-French sh-t needs to go; the house is much better suited to be a stripped-down country-style place than the formalized style J-Simp stamped upon it.

      • Sofia says:

Everything you said. I’m an interior design student and it really annoys me how rich people just buy a home that it’s hardly theirs (in the sense that they don’t really put much effort into it, making the place feel like their home). They buy mega expensive houses which just contributes to their sense of entitlement and pushes further away from the common people and any kind of normalcy. It’s like because you are rich YOU HAVE to live like rich people. It seems they never give it any second thoughts about the consequences of that. This is a pet peeve of mine, I’m sorry ^_^

      • Val says:

        + 1 Sofia

      • lucy2 says:

It definitely looks like a decorator did it up as a showhouse, not an actual home someone lives in. Did you see it only when it was up for sale though? Some people really stage homes for the photos and showings. I would assume she bought it unfurnished and will put her own style into it.
I love the grounds, and that trellis area!

      • Sofia says:

I saw two versions of the same space. But I wasn’t taking about this house in particular, this is something musicians, actors… all do when they are really rich. Have you seen Celine Dion’s house in Florida? It’s like… I can’t even properly describe it… It’s 5,5 acres, all white (sofas, furniture, EVERYTHING) and with gigantic pools. It looks like a theme park (not in a good way) and she spent like 70 million.. I mean, do you even use it all? How about energy saving, water consumption? And do you need 13 bedrooms? How can that feel like home? Do you just live in a corner of the property? For me this is all kinds of wrong. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

  7. Kcarp says:

I’m not offended. But I’m not a 9 year old boy so I don’t find it funny.

    • Sofia says:

I thought she was smart and this just… If you complain about media and paps (and I get it) don’t react in ways that will make you interesting from a media point of view. Be discrete, even boring. The more she reacts like a 5 year old, better for the paps, they probably get more money for shots like this because it becomes a thing. Doesn’t she have people to help her deal with the attention in a more healthy, positive way?

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Good question. I wonder if she just has a lot of YES people, you are wonderful Jen, around her and they dont really tell her much of anything, except work positive PR for her when something negative happens.

  8. LB says:

It’s irrational how I stopped liking her as much once she started dating Chris Martin.

    • Courtney says:

      Me too.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Yup , JLAW lately has just been a total turn off. Irritating more than endearing.

    • starrywonder says:

Me three. I dont know what it just bugs me cause he sucks and managed to push everything out on Goop about her ways and why they split. I think Goop is a pain too but I like her more than JLaw

      • littlestar says:

It must be a cold day in hell because I much prefer Goop over Lawrence too.

      • Luciana says:

Yeah, team Goop. Like Lainey asked if Goop and Jen were hosting a party at the same time, I would go to Goops.

    • Elle says:

There’s always something that has bothered me about JLaw, and her dating Chris Martin sealed the deal for me. I think she and Goop are more alike than people give them credit for: they’ both very carefully crafted a certain public image. It’s just that Jennifer’s, on the surface, is much more likable. So far, she’s also better at hiding her sense of entitlement.

I honestly think it’s creepy that Chris seems to have traded in his wife for a younger model. They’re both blonde starlets who had a lot of success fairly young. They were both “Weinstein” girls.” And while they are both talented, I think both of them are incredibly overrated. And they also both seek attention, again in different ways.

So, yes, while they seem a lot different, I think Goop and JLaw are cut from the same exact cloth.

  9. Lucy2 says:

I love the house! Really pretty.
Considering how much she is probably harassed by the paps, I can’t really blame her, even if it isn’t the classiest way to deal with it.

    • Liv says:

But what if you knew that Jessica Simpson lived in it? It must be so weird for celebritys to live in houses which were owned by other celebritys!

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Most do, they are hardly there anyway, but it’s done all the time in Hollywood.

Ellen purchased ………was it Anniston’s home? Not sure?
        …..on and on, it’s done a lot.

Didn’t Beyonce and JZ just purchase Babs MAlibu home?

  10. tamara says:

this is Ai Weiwei umbrella -He is a Chinese sculpture artist, This is part of a series of photographs made โ€‹โ€‹as a protest against the government in China

    • StormsMama says:

      +100
      Thanks

    • Kiddo says:

Oh thanks. I was pondering that it was giving rain the finger. It seems so trite, in comparison, if she is flipping off paps. Maybe she just likes the umbrella.

    • sigh((s)) says:

Something tells me she’s not protesting the Chinese government…

    • Ollyholly says:

This article should be updated to include this info, really interesting!

The story behind it is something that elevates it from dumb to thought provoking.

    • Nanea says:

No, it has nothing to do with Ai Weiwei.

It was designed several years ago by a design studio in Moscow. I got mine from them in 2006, and it had been around before that. It’s even available via Amazon from that studio, as the link from Bedhead to the umbrella suggests.

  11. Kiddo says:

That rosey wallpaper needs to come down pronto. It’s so treacly precious, my teeth hurt. Also, I think the designer overdid the blue flower theme, it’s skewing ‘cold’ versus calm. Other than that, nice layout and I’m envious of that kitchen. But I have kitchen envy, in general, since mine is ridiculously small.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I thought the house itself was beautiful, but agree about the decorating, especially that wallpaper and the overdone window in that room. I thought it was too “sweet” and I am so over covering all the furniture in droopy white slip covers. So timid.

    • Kitten says:

That house is straight out of Southern Living.
I hate everything about it except the outside grounds.

But my apartment is very rustic-modern—-exposed beams and brick accent walls, deep chocolate brown, burnt orange, turquoise, and natural fibers like wood, rattan, etc.
This house kills me with the flowers and all the white. Bleh.

      • Kiddo says:

I think the layout is nice and open. All of that decoration is a bit fussy for me, but I was thinking Connecticut and not southern-style. I like an eclectic mix of modern and antique, feminine and masculine elements together. The place is cottage-y so flowers and vines do belong outside. I hate lap pools though. I’d rather have a regular one where you can lounge if you want to on an unspeakably hot day. Also it seems a bit too shaded in the backyard to grow much, which would be a dealbreaker for me (you know, if I was sick-rich)

      • bella says:

I love the house precisely because of the blue hydrangeas, white slip covers, precious garden, flowery wallpaper…I think it’s stunning.
Funny the difference tastes…and I’m not a southerner.
But this home is just gorgeous.

      • Kiddo says:

You know what bella? You can have the whole thing @ $ 16 mil. I’ll throw in all the furniture.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

It’s very California to me. I used to live there and if I never see another white slip cover it will be too soon. Kitten, your apartment sounds lovely.

I actually like the outside of this house a lot. It looks English country cottage to me, which I love.

  12. Icarus says:

She reminds me of the slightly more classy version of Kristen Stewart when it comes to the paps. She’s a better actress, JLaw, she does have a few more facial expressions. I liked JLaw when she first on the scene, but she’s proven to be too juvenile to my taste.

    • bella says:

      Precisely.
She’s adorable, but now with her acclaim and success, she needs to step it up a notch and leave behind the silly sophomoric behavior.
      It isn’t cute anymore.

  13. Carrie says:

I’m really not offended by the umbrella but her attitude is so incredibly annoying (especially lately). She’s promoting a movie- there are paparazzi. It’s how Hollywood works. Get used to it already, sweetie. You’re not very much harassed either by the way. There are celebrities who have paparazzi outside their homes, outide schools where their children go, outside hospitals etc. You’re usually just walking to the party/airport or from the party/airport. I don’t get how people can find her refreshing, adorable and relatable or whatever and fall for her PR-made schtick. She should just quit acting in Hollywood movies if she doesn’t like the media and maybe try in theatre if she’s just about acting (that she finds stupid btw which is SO refreshing ) and not about all this money she got thanks to her fame (that comes thanks to the media).

    • Caesar says:

I think it’s safe to say that the fame has officially gone to her head. It’s possible for celebrities to not be photographed, obviously, there are the ones who are too famous to go anywhere without being photographed, but a good portion could avoid attention by not going to certain hotspots. I find her incredible annoying, and beyond juvenile for a twenty something. When she first came on the scene, I found her refreshing at first, but now, I can’t stand her. I feel some of her acting is overrated as well, she’s not bad, but I feel overhyped. And now, the comments of me being a troll begin.

  14. Fiona says:

Hilarious. If Kristen Stewart had this umbrella I’m sure we’d all be saying how pathetic and gross she is.

    • pretty says:

what? K-Stew once screamed to a pap, “you don’t deserve to breathe the same air i breathe” while hiding behind a car. that’s how K-Stew roll. This umbrella is prob too lame for her badass athentic hardcore self.

      • Brutus says:

What kstew said to the paps that one time was uncalled for, no doubt. But I have to agree with @Fiona that is KStew did this or practically any other celeb that’s relatively the same age, they would be looked down as.

I don’t view this umbrella thing as remotely “bad ass” or “hardcore.” I’m about an age older that JLaw if that’s any consolation. Each to their own I suppose.

      • Dany says:

these paps forget to show you the part where they insulted Stewart. She was total distraught. Or do you think she hides and screams without reason… without something other going on?
Some people see and hear only what they want when they hate a celeb.

      • Brutus says:

@Dany I didn’t know that part, I don’t usually follow celebrity stories. Just comment on occasion when I’m bored. I figured there was something else involved. There’s always at least two sides to a story.

  15. Megan says:

I am surprised by her choice of house. It doesn’t seem like her style at all.

    • Sofia says:

Does she have a style? What style is that? (I really don’t see any particular look or style).

  16. Kate2 says:

Didn’t look at the house photos but I think she looks adorable here. I used to have a shirt similar to that one. I miss it. I’ll have to find another. Love the hat too.

The umbrella doesn’t bother me at all. After the crap she’s had to deal with lately I think she’s earned the right to be a little ornery over having her picture taken. JMO.

    • vavavoom says:

Agreed ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve never seen one of her movies, but I like what seems to be her authenticity. She is still young, and seems to be handling her rise to fame pretty well, while staying true to herself. And if herself is a carb eating, finger giving, farty girl, then you go girl.

  17. Luciana says:

I love her outifit, mainly the bag!!! I cannot wait for HG Mockingjay!!! Not a fan of hers but those movies are awesome.

  18. DavidBowie says:

Meh, I’m not offended but it’s childish.

  19. OhDear says:

I’m jealous that she’s getting a koi pond!

  20. Lee says:

Here’s a more recent set of house photos – renovated with much better decor: http://www.hauteresidence.com/estate/9555-lime-orchard-road-beverly-hills-ca-90210/

Not finding the umbrella all that funny, with the context of the Chinese protest. Highlights a certain lack of maturity, imo. Enjoy the money? Just deal with the fame…

    • Nikki says:

Lee, thank you for this link; these pictures are much better. I’d take this house any day! I’ve heard marble is not super practical as a kitchen counter, but it looks lovely to me. Once I was watching a movie where the couple was having super hot sex in the kitchen, and I leaned over to ask my hubby about the cabinetry! He still laughs about it; I love looking at people’s …..kitchens!

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I have a marble countertop on the island in my kitchen. The counters behind it are dark, varnished wood. It’s beautiful to me, but you have to accept that it will get water spots on it and they can’t be removed without totally refinishing it. However, people always say it gets stained, and I’ve had it for about six years, and use it all the time and nothing has ever stained it. I would get it again, but if imperfections bother you, don’t get one.

I’m always interrupting movies to say to my husband “look at the detail on that cornice!” Lol

      • Kitten says:

Seriously? I have tile countertops and I would KILL for granite or marble.
There is absolutely nothing more vile to me than tile countertops. Just a bunch of crevices to hold dirt/crumbs, impossible to clean. I detest it.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yeah, I’m happy with it because I call it “patina.” And tile, or rather grout, is hard to keep looking nice.

    • Kitten says:

      This is better…

      • Nikki says:

Oh yes, Kitten, tile with grout is impossible, so hard to clean. I still have Formica fake granite, and I’d take that over tile. Someday: granite or marble for us both!

      • Kitten says:

I would be completely content with formica fake granite! That’s what I had in my last apt and I was fine with it. ANYTHING except for tile/grout.

    • Erinn says:

Ahhh I like this version much more. I especially love the yard though.

  21. Sara says:

those things only attract more attention and make the pictures more valuable because more people want to see the umbrella.

When Daniel Radcliffe was doing theatre, he would wear the same jacket, same trousers and same shirt when arriving there and it basically made the pictures worthless as no one could put a date on them and they all looked like they were taken the same day.

    • AlexandriaTheGreat says:

      That’s why he’s awesome ; )

    • Sofia says:

I think Jennifer Aniston did the same during the most heated times she had with the paps. Somehow the image of some orange shorts come to my mind ^_^

    • Elle says:

Exactly! I’m not say actors can entirely avoid pap shots, but there are ways to diminish the interest. That umbrella? Not one of them.

Sofia: Isn’t that part of why Jennifer tends to stick to a fairly limited wardrobe when out and about? I thought I read once that she had started to do that because it makes photos of her less valuable and therefore she’s less worth pursuing.

      • Sofia says:

I think I read that too! I’m not sure if she uses that strategy now, maybe she just likes her blacks and greys but we really don’t see many paps photos of her and no one can really say no one cares because mags write a lot about her. Maybe jen should ask celebs friends how it’s done…

  22. Nikki says:

I really like her house; it seems charming, especially the flower laden coutry entrance and the grounds. Whenever I see all white upholstered furniture, though, I just imagine someone in my family drinking grape juice. Wouldn’t work for me!

  23. Eleonor says:

While she is a good actress I’ve never understood all the fuzz she is sourrounded with: I do not like her fart jokes, to me those things aren’t funny, are gross, I do not like her middle finger, basically I think this girl is rude.
And now I am going to clutch my pearls.

  24. AG-UK says:

All I have to say is I have those boots and they are very comfy. That’s it!

  25. Rachel says:

She’s kind of just drawing more attention to herself.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      +1

    • Veronica says:

Eh…it’s kind of one of those things where she’d get the attention no matter what, eh? I do think she needs to calm down a bit on the anti-pap behavior because the reactions are what they live for, but like K. Stew, she’s still young and learning. If they’re both still throwing fits about it in their 30s, then it gets ridiculous.

      • Tracy says:

@Veronica K Stewart was being insulted and screamed at, she was also carrying a newly rescued puppy. My thoughts at the time she was pissed off the yelling and them upsetting the puppy. Perhaps the paps were screaming at J. Lawrence. I personally don’t see it as throwing a fit, to react to someone screaming at you.

  26. Nessa says:

Meh. It’s just an umbrella. Pretty childish, but that’s sort of expected when it comes to Jennifer. Good actress, but not the pillar of maturity for her generation. She is losing her appeal to me… And fast.

  27. Hissyfit says:

For someone who claims to hate the attention, she sure knows how to get it.

  28. BlueeJay says:

I wonder if her and Chris are already over. Or perhaps he tired of her games to get the paps to notice her. She really is just a pathetic thing.

    • Helo says:

@Blueejay: WTF?…oh knock it off. Btw, the umbrella is hilarious and thank GOD Jennifer Lawtence is free of that weird ass couple.

  29. toronto says:

it’s an ai wei wei umbrella.

  30. Dany says:

just walking to her car would bring less attention and photos than she now has walking with her umbrella… itยดs the same when she covers her face when she leaves a concert. That brings more attention than normal behaviour.

  31. Candy Love says:

    Not not rude just childish.

  32. sarah says:

I think Americans love farting, belching, middle finger pointing, “just like you” types so I don’t think any one will find this rude. I do think she goes out of her way to hog the attention during red carpet events esp. when someone else is being interviewed. I find that much more annoying than this.

    • Icarus says:

I’m American, and I don’t find half the jokes about farting, middle finger painting or belching funny. I’m in the same age group as Jennifer as well. Some are funny, but from what I’ve seen of her interviews, she tends to go overboard. There are times and places for such jokes, not in a professional setting. I felt this move as very juvenile.

      • KB says:

I’m an American and I don’t find any of those jokes funny. Also in my mid 20s.

      • Liv says:

Seriously, it is a characteristic of american comedy movies, isn’t it? I don’t know british, french or german comedies which would discuss farting or going to the toilet like american films do!

  33. zambo says:

Lawrence doesn’t need to play games to get the paps to notice her – at the moment, she’s probably their No. 1 target. The umbrella is immature (if entertaining), but she’s entitled to vent a little given everything that’s happened over the last few weeks. She does get more slack than others, but a) she’s genuinely talented and b) is obviously liked by her peers – see Daniel Radcliffe’s comments in some mag last week.

  34. Lucy says:

Is it weird that I sort of want the umbrella?

    • maybeiamcrazy says:

That umbrella is work of a genious. I would love to give finger to the heavans when it is raining.

  35. Senaber says:

That house is my dream house. I want my daughter in that room with the window seat. I might save these pics to the fantasy file!

  36. Luciana says:

I know J Law the hottest commodity right now in Hollywood but man, she’s is such a handful and immature! Why is she channeling Kristen Stewart? Paps can be annoying and all but it’s what she have signed for. She should be grateful she’s being pap. When she approaches 30s, she will be replaced by the new hottest It girl and forgotten. She should read what Keira said in the other post.

    • Sozual says:

Man Keira Knightley blew up and then disappeared and then re-appeared to do movies. Keira is amazing!

  37. Veronica says:

I think her dislike of paparazzi would bother me more if she actively pursued them more often, but she’s actually pretty good at keeping on the down low outside of movie promotion. It still makes me roll my eyes to some extent, but not as much as it does when, say, Ben Affleck does it. Her street fashion is getting much better, though.

  38. hmmm says:

Like the world isn’t ugly enough. I used to like her, think she is talented, but although she’s getting older she’s not getting any wiser. She continues to act in a puerile manner and it’s finally become annoying. BTW, the house is bland and dull though I do love the pool.

  39. Alex says:

Honestly the umbrella is funny to me. Paps are pretty horrible and she never likes being papped. And you hardly ever see her between press time. I think the only reason we’ve seen her this much is because she needed to distract from the hacking and show that she’s fine.

and oh look E is now reporting that she and Chris Martin are over. I called this ages ago. Started right before the hacking began, a few concert appearances and BOOM instant distraction. Now that promotion start soon begin the solo pap walks, the Chris and Goop stories and BOOM instant breakup. Called it…surprise surprise

  40. Queen87 says:

She and Marin have split. It’s on enews. I’m happy for her because she deserves a better man without kids

    • sarah says:

I honestly think that was PR cooked up by Harvey to distract from the nude scandal. It worked like a charm. They probably didn’t want to take any chances with her career incase people turned on her (even though it’s not her fault but we live in a sexist society).

      • Queen87 says:

Harvey? He isn’t her agent. She made only Silver Lining with his company. Stop this nonsense. Do you think tha Harvey control Amy Adams’s relationship or the relationship of all the actresses who made movies with him?

      • Liv says:

Now I’m convinced it was PR too. How convenient that they never got papped and a few weeks after the scandal they broke up.

      • Alex says:

I’ve been saying this all along. It played out like a page from a PR handbook. Last two weeks were pap shots of Jen alone. Tabs write “sad Jen stories” but still try and connect the two together. Spin another Chris and Goop outing into a possible cheating scandal and BOOM breakup a few days later.

      • jinni says:

@Queens87: She also made Serena with him and despite not initially wanting be the brand’s ambassador, he told her to take the offer from Dior to be the face of the brand. So that shows just how much influence he has over her career even with things that have nothing to do with movies he is producing.

      • Queen87 says:

@jiinni Serena isn’t with Harvey. It’s studiocanal plus 2929 production and released from Magnolia. Her only Weinstein’s movie is Silver Linings Playbook

    • Luciana says:

      Martin Lawrence is broken? Shocking.

    • Veronica says:

Don’t get me excited. I’m not getting my hopes up until it’s across the entire blogosphere. For all we know, E!News did that so they’d be forced to come out and confirm the relationship beyond a few blurry pap photos.

    • sarah says:

Google Harvey’s girls & you will find out what I mean. He picks a young blonde out of obscurity & makes them a superstar. Once the girl is 25 he picks another hot young blonde & so on.

      • Celia says:

Except she was already an Oscar nominee with two franchises before she made the Silver Linings Playbook. Vulture even ranked her as the 16th most valuable Hollywood star in 2012 before SLP even came out. I find it quite insulting when people claim he ‘made’ her career when she was big star even before she won (which is a big reason for her Oscar win). Pretty sexist, imo.

      • jbap says:

Spot on – she was a coming star before Harvey saw her, and according to David O Russell he had to convince Weinstein to cast her. The ‘Harvey made her’ claim is just wrong.
