Natalie Dormer on Jennifer Lawrence: ‘She’s so together. She’s an old soul’

Natalie Dormer

Natalie Dormer appears in the December issue of Cosmo to promote her role as Cressida in Mockingjay: Part I. I bought advance tickets for my daughter’s birthday, so we’re counting down the days until we get to see Katniss kick some booty again. Natalie’s character is super tough too, and she has the half-shaved head to prove it. Natalie’s not getting the big magazine features for this movie because she’s not a huge star. Yet. There’s time for that in the future. I’ll be holding out for Nat as a Captain Marvel candidate. Yeah, she was in Captain America in a tiny role, but that doesn’t matter. She’d be a great Captain Marvel.

Natalie wears futuristic clothing for the Cosmo editorial, but those excerpts aren’t much. I cobbled them together with her new interview with Glamour UK. Check out what she says about Jennifer Lawrence, and we’ll discuss:

On courage: “Courage isn’t the lack or absence of fear – it’s overcoming it.”

Her new hairstyle: “Shaving half my head was a strong look that meant I could go punkier with my style.”

How to be stylish: “Good style – regardless of fads – means the things that suit your body.”

She adores JLaw: “Jennifer Lawrence is just the coolest girl. Everyone forgets how young she is because she’s so together, such an old soul. She just gets it. She’s one savvy chick.”

On scoring the Cressida role: “I went to the world premiere of Catching Fire last year, and it was amazing. To be joining The Hunger Games family is such a thrill. It deserves the hype because it’s well written, handles really big subject matter, but doesn’t talk down to its audience. And then there’s the romance element. The Hunger Games has something for everyone.”

She plays f—/marry/kill (sort of) “I’d avoid Gale because he’s too in love with Katniss, I’d kiss Peeta because he’s sweet and I’d marry Finnick because he’s loyal.”

[From Cosmo & Glamour UK]

Thank you, Natalie. I once called JLaw “an old soul,” and some of you fell to the floor laughing. I completely get how ridiculous it is to think Ms. Fartypants could possibly be mature. Seriously though, Jennifer can turn the farttime on and off and will. I read an interview (the source now evades me) with Bradley Cooper about how he was taken aback when he first started working with JLaw on Silver Linings Playbook. He couldn’t understand why she was cutting so many jokes and running around like a maniac. Then David O. Russell yelled, “Action,” and Jennifer transformed herself within a single moment. So what Nat says makes sense.

I’m including photos of Natalie on Halloween. She dressed as a victim of Jack the Ripper.

The fact that she can act on cue doesn’t make her an old soul. And as if someone will say something negative about America’s darling.

    • Linn says:

      +1

“Old Soul” is one of the last words I would use to describe Jennifer Lawrence.
I don’t mean that as an insult, I’m sure she can be mature and professional when she has to be.

Natalie looks great in the first picture.

    • Artemis says:

Exactly, most actors can act on cue. Even hot messes can pull it together long enough to finish film after film. It means she does her job well, that’s about it.

Considering she often said offensive things and runs her mouth without thinking, I’m thinking that people don’t know what old soul means.

    • Jules says:

With the acting talent we see these days in Hollywood, maybe acting on que does qualify someone as an old soul…………

    • Anne tommy says:

The phrase old soul should join exploding ovaries on the banned list. I like J law though.

    • Charlie says:

Exactly. She comes across as very immature.
And if she put a bit more thought into her acting, maybe she wouldn’t do the same things in almost all of her roles. And maybe she wouldn’t overact all the time.

Also, whenever someone describes her they all say she has it together or says something work related. I’ve never read someone say she’s so nice, or so smart, something more personal.

      • Gillian1 says:

J-Law is always being described as both smart and nice by her co-workers – it’s a constant theme. Of course, you always have to take these things with a pinch of salt. However, it’s striking that people like Natalie Dormer and Elizabeth Banks go out of their way to praise both her work and her personality. And it’s obvious that Lawrence is very clever in selecting her roles – she’s shown she can do action, comedy and drama, playing very different characters which showcase her range. (I just don’t get the idea she plays the same character – that seems to be to obviously untrue…)

      • Charlie says:

I didn’t see those interviews then. She doesn seem like an ok person, just very annoying. I used to like her a lot, now I really dislike her. Too bad.

I didn’t say she plays the same character, but she plays ever character in a similar way. She doesn’t disappear in a role like truly great actors. She plays sadness equally in every movie, anger, lunacy, etc. I don’t know if I’m explaining this right.

      • qwerty says:

        @Gillian1

Funny – that I can see, some people will find her jokes unny or sure. But I’ve yet to see an interview where she comes off as smart.

      • Gillian1 says:

Take a look at her interview last year with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show for an example, or the various Youtube compliations of her doing press for her films – it’s difficult to pull off J-Law’s patented line of self-depreciating humour and quick comic responses if you don’t have some smarts.

    • Sofia says:

I would say that a old soul is a person wise beyond her years. I see nothing like that in her. The way she deals with the attention she gets pretty much shows how unwise she is…

      • Louminary says:

Yea but I’d be more inclined to the opinions of those who have actually met her. We can form all sorts of opinions based on interviews, soundbites, the way she presents herself in public, etc, but we don’t actually know her at all. I’m kind of inclined to believe Natalie.

  2. Jules says:

Awww….Natalie Dormer is adorable. Love what she said about Jennifer Lawrence. So looking forward to Mockingjay!!.

  3. Aussie girl says:

I wish I could learn how to turn my farts on and off😜

  4. Helo says:

I like Dormer. I think she’ll make a great Cressida. And yeah, totally agree with her about Jennifer Lawrence being an old soul. Lawrence has always had a great reputation on/off set with people.

  5. Luciana says:

    Natalie Dormer’s post!!! YEEAHHH!!!

    *Bows to THE Queen*

  6. Sullivan says:

I find Natalie bewitching. She’s been my crush since she played Anne Boleyn.

  7. Frida_K says:

I loved her in Silver Linings Playbook. I had a nervous breakdown at a point in my life and the way she was in that movie made me feel like there was hope for me. I knew it was just a movie and no, I didn’t go nympho as my form of self-expression, but still. I watched that movie and felt less alone. I also felt like maybe someone would love me even though I was scarred up so badly inside, just like she found someone to love her.

Again, I knew it was just a movie but her character, and also the Robert De Niro character, really touched a nerve in me.

And I love the Hunger Games. So when JL does annoying stuff, I just ignore it. I don’t want to have my illusions shattered.

  8. Chinoiserie says:

Natalie as Captain Marvel would be perfect and I love he fashion sense, it is so her and fun. And I feel bad when I see Halloween costumes like this when if Halloween is not big thing here and there is no other change to wear consumes like hers here.

  9. MeloMelo says:

How is being professional old soulish?

  10. whatsmyname? says:

Natalie isn’t the first person to describe her as such and it doesn’t have anything to with acting. I’m sooo looking forward to Mockingjay, I can’t wait to to see her as Cressida! I like Natalie and it’s a shame that the discussion has to be about someone else…

    • Luciana says:

      +100000…infinit

Can we just stop talking about Jen Law and start discussing this amazing person called Natalie Dormer?

      • Jbap says:

Yeah, love J-Law but Natalie deserves rivers of praise just for herself.

      • Luciana says:

I have loved her since The Tudors. She was a compelling Anne Boleyn despite all the historical inaccuracies. After her “death”, I stopped watching the show. It turned into a cr*p fest IMO.

      • magpie says:

Tots. She was the best thing about that show and when she got offed it just wasn’t as interesting or fun.

  11. bell says:

Natalie or Katheryn Winnick as a captain marvel. they would be great

    • CuriousCole says:

      +1000000
I’m absolutely in love with both Natalie and Katheryn Winnick! Give them more roles and more magazine covers! I’m disappointed Natalie isn’t Cosmo’s cover, I don’t have Bedhead’s patience.

  12. Helo says:

    @WHATSMYNAME?: Yes, plus one million.

  13. iskra says:

can someone explain what old soul means?

    • Kiddo says:

Wiser, more mature than your chronological age.

      • iskra says:

thanks…well then, i doubt jlaw is one.

      • Helo says:

@ISKRA: No, I think it is possible to be funloving and still be wise and mature. The people who have said this about Lawrence are the ones who know her, have worked with her spent time with her. They will know her well enough to form that opinion of her (that she’s an old soul).

  14. free spirited girl says:

JLaw is NOT an old soul. She took hundreds of nude pics of herself. I don’t think an old should could do that. 🙂

  15. Lilacflowers says:

Can I just say I want that suit? Thank you.

  16. Sailor of Saturn says:

The oldest things about this girl are her “cool girl” shtick, her crude behavior and fart jokes.

  17. Carrie says:

Everybody already knows how goofy, relatable and awesome Jlaw is, so please Natalie, don’t screw up her PR, ok? If she wanted to be considered an old soul, her team would be already all over it throwing her down our throats. I think her schtick is still “farts-pizza-buttplugs-vomiting-at-parties” so let’s stick with that.

  18. Hissyfit says:

    That smirk.

  19. Jules says:

Well, I buy it. Jennifer Lawrence is an old soul who has an incredibly goofy side to her.

  20. Jaz says:

Natalie Dormer is fabulous – smart, cool and talented. And what she says about J-Law echoes similar comments by Amy Adams, Julianne Moore and many others. The minority who give out endlessly about her ‘immaturity’ and ‘crudity’ are assuming that the public persona she adopts on chat shows and so on is the full picture – instead, like many actresses (and many girls in general), I think she’s adopting a protective shell, which she manages to pull off with a considerable degree of smarts and humour.

  21. Jules says:

@Jaz: Yes. I couldn’t agree more and it’s the point I was trying to make.

  22. notlistening says:

She´s so beautiful in that top picture.

  23. Dara says:

I love Natalie! She’s always near the top of my Bad Ass Chicks list – and that’s a major compliment as far as I’m concerned. She needs to be cast in everything.

  24. Lucy says:

    Yay Natalie! She’s awesome.

  25. jess says:

I don’t know who this is and didn’t bother to read the post but, had to comment on the floating head in the picture in the white dress. Why have they completely remover her neck?? What could be so bad about having a neck. It looks fine in the other pictures. This is some terrible Photoshop.

  26. Phie says:

I am a straight woman and for some reason I find Natalie Dormer ridiculously attractive. Hell, I would take her over 97% of male celebs.
There is always something distinctively naughty in the characters she plays, and I can never take my eyes away. ‘Bewitching’, as someone pointed out earlier, is a great word to describe her.

Very excited to see her in Mockingjay!
