George Clooney filming in St. Louis, city freaks out

One of my favorite political “news” websites is Wonkette, and the warbloggers over there have this feature called “Wonk’d”, where people can write in about all the celebrities they see. Usually these celebrities are people like New York Times columnist Paul Krugman and maybe, if you’re really lucky, someone will have seen Newsweek’s Michael Isikoff at a Starbucks. Today, one of the Wonkette readers sent in a grainy, evocative picture of George Clooney in St. Louis, where he’s working on his new film Up in the Air. The Wonkette reader noted “Obama confidante and gorgeous Darfur lover George Clooney was just spotted in St. Louis. Filming started today here on his new movie, Up in the Air (otherwise known as George Clooney stalks around airports in bland, featureless cities like St. Louis).”

Apparently, people in St. Louis are totally freaking out with George in their midst. The local press is treating it like a papal visit, attempting to note Clooney’s comings and goings, even though the production company “has no comment” on Clooney’s whereabouts. St. Louis is turning into a town of stalker-razzi! Here’s some good local coverage from The Belleville News Democrat:

Dreamy — that’s how most women refer to actor George Clooney, who is currently in St. Louis for production of a movie titled “Up in the Air.”

Movie-related locations downtown include several trailers parked in a lot along Broadway, just south of Busch Stadium. The trailers have logos on them that read “Starwaggons,” and “Movie Movers Transportation Equipment.”

Production company officials have no comment on Clooney’s whereabouts. They do say that during the day, of course, Clooney is busy working and acting — playing his role in the movie. His nights are his own, however. And that’s where it gets interesting.

Clooney apparently has spent some of his off time in the Central West End. He’s already been spotted in a club known as Mandarin. And Culpepper’s waitress Laura Sieges left behind her assigned section Sunday night after somebody told her Clooney was right next door, inside Subzero. Sieges said she did not talk to him.

“No I didn’t, I was too nervous,” she said. “He was having dinner with some people.”

Sieges thought Clooney’s dinner guests were also move production officials. Sieges was asked if it looked like Clooney had a date.

“No,” she said. “There was a couple ladies and a couple gentlemen.”

Asked what she’ll do if she finds Clooney seated in her section, Sieges said, “I’ll probably run in the back and be like, ‘Oh my goodness, George Clooney’s here!'”

[From The Belleville News Democrat]

According to Cinematical, Up in the Air is supposed to be one of those weird Coen-esque comedies. They say “Clooney will play an HR guy whose single joy is nabbing his millionth frequent-flyer mile. While his life falls apart in his frequent-flying absence, Vera Farmiga’s businesswoman will keep meeting him in airports and hotels and develop a romance with him.” Jason Bateman just signed on to play Clooney’s boss, and the film is being directed by Juno’s Jason Reitman. No word on how long Clooney will be in St. Louis… though I hope those people don’t kill him with love.

Here’s George at the “Have a Heart” charity gala in Berlin on December 6th. Images thanks to Fame.com.

People in St Louis need to get out more.

  2. Enonymous says:

So the fugly old man has landed. St. Louis must have low standards when it comes to celebrities.

  3. Kait says:

I live here in St Louis and I would argue against labeling us as bland and featureless. Sure, we’re not as intense as New York or as phony as LA, but we’ve got a unique charm.

  4. LT says:

I’m from MPLS. and have lived in L.A. for 30 years. L.A. is full of artists and spiritual seekers, regular folks and earthy types, not just phony fame chasers, thank you.

  5. Girl says:

Spent a night in St. Louis driving cross country once. Scariest place I’ve ever been to, and I got lost in east LA once. St. Louis is one big ghetto.

  6. JD says:

Not sure how i stumbled across this website, but seriously who gives a ** on where George Cloony is filming. I just had to laugh at this. I don’t really understand why this is even a topic of discussion. The tax credits are cheaper in St. Louis and that is why he is here-bottom line. Frankly, I am glad he is here its nice to hear something fun, POSITIVE, and exciting on the news rather than all this economy BS. However, I do have to defend St. Louis on being bland and featureless and the “ghetto”. I am guessing most of you have never really been to St. Louis-The Airport does not count (plus that is about 20 min outside the city) St. Louis is full of great history, amazing architecture from the 1800’s, hundreds of one of kind resturaunts, great music, loved sport teams, culture, great people (which incude artists, spiritual seekers, regular folks, earthy types, and phony fame chasers)and fantastic charming neighborhoods. Like any city there are areas considered “Ghetto” but what city doesn’t have that. Last time i was in LA i was harassed by hundreds of HOBO’s and got bullied on the Subway just because I wasn’t latino. I am sure if LA was not used to having celebrities filming in there city everyday then seeing one would be a little more exciting. Just let St. Louis get excited, it gives people something to keep there minds off the fear of losing thier damn jobs and having to live in LA and become a HOBO. I am not a normal blogger, nor a writer so I know i prbably used incorrect grammer and have mis-spellings so there is no point on letting me know that. THanks.

Another St. Louisian here and while it has been reported that Clooney is in town, it is hardly the only thing being talked about. We don’t have a lot of movies shot here so of course it will make the news and the reporting mostly is how the production will bring revenue into the city.

And like many cities St. Louis has it rough spots, but overall it is fine. Maybe Girl you should pony up some money and find a better hotel.

Why do some of you feel the need to insult other cities? What does it accomplish exactly?

  8. geronimo says:

Agree with the St Louis posters here. Very patronising, why shouldn’t the locals take pleasure in the fact that a major A-lister is filming in their city and helping the local economy? Personally, really looking forward to this movie, and the plot synopsis is much more interesting than suggested here.

  9. michellle says:

He can come to my city any time. Hell, I’d let him crash at my place.

  10. Jackie says:

I work in St. Louis, and I didn’t even know he was here until I read THIS article. So, believe me, not EVERYBODY cares or knows that he’s here. Oh, and St. Louis may have its problems, but its highways are certainly not the parking lot LA’s highways are; I visited there once and will never go back

  11. k2sgal says:

I have lived in St. Louis my whole life and yes it does have its not so great areas but what city doesn’t. Yes it is very exciting that George Clooney is in our city but its not like our everyday lives are going to stop because of it. Also there are a lot of fun places to visit here so before you knock it maybe you should pay St. Louis a visit.

  12. RAN says:

You go, St Louis folks! I support your right to care about who might be in your city!

Had a movie shot in our city/town once. It was some Civil War era film that generated lots of buzz, although I can’t remember the film or the name. Anywho, it was pretty exciting to think about running into some of the actors – which never happened to me.

Now I’ve driven myself crazy… At some point, I’m going to have to look up the name of the movie that was shot here.

  13. STLgirl says:

I really thought that the Celebitchy writers were above making fun of cities they have probably never been to. I guess I was wrong.

  14. cookie says:

I lived in New York City for 4 years during the early 90s. When I moved back to St. Louis, I was depressed for awhile because I was used to being overstimulated all the time and that doesn’t happen here which is why we get excited when George Clooney comes to town.

But I have to say I live in one of about 10 stunningly gorgeous neighborhoods here in ST. Louis. It’s called the Central West End and it has 10,000 square foot turn-of-the-century mansions, shops, night clubs and restaurants that would give a lot of NYC’s upscale eateries a run for their money. When friends visit from either coast, their jaws drop upon seeing our house because we paid half what they did for shoebox apartments. Our house is 3,000 square feet and dripping with charm — as is my entire eccentric street. So calling a city bland and featureless tells me these people have never been here and as for Girl who called it a ghetto — yes we have bad sections, but they’re a very small part of St. Louis.

  15. Mpea says:

Cookie! Here here sister! My husband (who is originally from London) and I moved back here from San Francisco to the CWE ourselves. Initially, we were bummed but now we love it. Its like living on seasame street. I know all the chefs on the corner, the shop owners, my butcher, my ups man (I do faaaar too much online shopping), have tons of friends at the dogpark, eat out all the time and run into families, friends, politicians, authors, porfessors etc etc etc. Its as urban as any city I’ve lived in. And true dat. We have a BEAUTIFUL place that would cost millions in SF or the UK. PS: Clooney, while known for the charm and wit is a bit of a stand offish twat. He has the classic “Handlers” who are loud, rude and offensive. He likes to go to big, scene-y places to hit on 22 yr old girls and is offended when people approach him to say hello. While I’m glad the attention and revenue is here I’m not at all impressed with the Hollywood attitude. I know far more attractive and interesting people all over the world ….

  16. marylamb says:

    Mpea,
Was this description of George Clooney a personal experience? Or did you hear this from someone…anyone at all?

  17. Guesty says:

Clooney w/handlers! noo so it ain’t so? An Academy Award winner that would be mobbed beyond safety has someone with him at all times!? wow!

Going out to relax after a 12-14 hour day and he’s cranky! wow!

Hit on 22 year old girls? Got names? Places? Photos? or are you spreading more gossip without basis?

    wow!

  18. MPea says:

    Guesty,

I got it all, but I ain’t posting here.

  19. LadyDi says:

We (the American public) spend way to much time idolizing people who are just that..people. We all put our pants on the same way…..Yes I am excited that they are filming a movie in St Louis, and hopefully it will depict us as the great city we are. Anyone who has lived here all of their life knows that for the most part it is a great city.

  20. Jesse says:

I Live In St. Louis, but have lived all over the world. I just got back from several long trips to New York, D,C. Mimami and other places. I was with the highest folks in Show Business, Modeling And fashion, Beside just rich folks that have nothing to do but invest. I have been to about 46 states and several contouries. I have and know many famous folks if that is what they call them, they are no different then us, Other then they do not work like most. and think they do not stink. If I put thier names down here you’d see folks that you know, they are selfish Self Centered folks that knows nothing of the real world. I have been to Hollywood and know many of those folks too, and in New York Nashville and around the world. Those cities have nothing on St. LOuis, I cannot wait to get back to St. Louis when I am gone. Folks that think entertainers are somehing knows nothing and St. Louis is better then most cities to live in and raise a family. I pity the folks stuck in the rut that N.Y.C and Calif. Has something we don’t have, they do have large crime rates, what city in the world doesn’t.,. I grew up in St. Louis can live any where I choose, but I choose St. Louis sorry for you folks that don’t. Nothing in New York or Calif, Paris, Italy, Greece,London, Toyko that I want, at least not far very long, always glad to get home to the real world. I know the tops of the Entertaintment world, they are Idiots that pretends to know everything yet knows nothing. Sorry folks, but the truth. Who cares if Clooney is in St.Louis? Not me.

  21. Chef DeVolo says:

I’m a native New Yorker currently living in St. Louis and I can tell you with authority that this city is anything but “bland and featureless.” This is not like the typical flyover Midwest city most people on the coasts think about. This city is full of amazing historic neighborhoods, cultured people and rich culture. What a well-kept secret! I am returning to NYC at the end of this month and am seriously considering buying an apartment here as a second home. St. Louis is a wonderful city and has all the qualities that make for a high quality of life.

  22. d_c says:

    Girl,

I’m sure since you spent 1 evening in STL that you are the expert on how “ghetto” it is. What backwards redneck town are you from that St. Louis is “the scariest place you’ve ever been to?” Really? This is the first time I had been on Celebitchy.com and you guys really live up to your name, congrats! Your making it sound so sad that this bland and featureless city is getting so excited about having Clooney in town, but how sad is it that you report on something that you know nothing about, such as the quality of the city? Sorry that the whole country can’t have the same “bitchy” qualities!

  23. iheartstl says:

I love St. Louis… and I have lived all over! I am excited that this lovely city is making money during these difficult economic times. Score one for the STL!!! Thank you Mr. Clooney and Paramount Pictures! Haters be damned. You are missing out.

  24. Powell says:

I have been saying all month that it is HUMILIATING that the news is covering Clooney being in town. Thanks a lot you idiot local newscasters for confirming all the St. Louis, small-town, low rent, corn crop, passe stereotypes for the rest of the country.

  25. CHRISTINA says:

YOU ALL SHOULD BE ASHAMED I AM FROM STL AND THIS IS THE MOST LOVING CITIES EVER! YEAH SURE GEORGE CLOONEY IS IN TOWN FILMING A MOVIE BUT NO ONE CARES ABOUT THAT WE DO NOT HARASS HOLLYWOOD PEOPLE AT ALL. HE IS DOING A GOOD THING HERE IN ST LOUIS FILMING THIS MOVIE. KUDDOS TO EVRYONE THAT IS A PART OF THIS FILM. ST LOUIS IS A WONDERFUL TOWN TO LIVE. HE LIKES IT HERE BECAUSES HE BEING TREATED LIKE A NORMAL PERSON!

  26. CB Rawks says:

Step away from the keyboard, ma’am.

Oh and *kuddos* on the allcaps.

  27. zissou says:

i grew up and lived in st. louis until about five years ago, when i had an opportunity to move to the pacific northwest. i took it and have never looked back.

to be fair, st. louis is certainly not a ‘featureless’ city. it’s something of a well-kept secret in ‘flyover’ country. the architecture is simply gorgeous, and there are leafy, lovely inner neighborhoods that feel every bit as urban as parts of manhattan.

but every american city has pockets of creativity here and there. more than anything, st. louis is frustratingly conservative and filled with a deep inertia. it suffers from a debilitating inferiority complex. as much as i tried to get out and enjoy the city where i was born, life there just felt heavy and small.

i’m glad to see the city get some economic boost from a major motion picture. but the antics of the local news media making so much out of clooney’s presence remind me how much i don’t miss st. louis. at all.

  28. buffy says:

Just moved to Ft.Lauderdale after 52 miserable years in St.Louis. It is one of the most conservative, narrow minded, nicotine addicted, beer swilling, sports obsessed towns ever. I wish I had moved years ago. Oh, and the people there are horrible, mean, and rude. They think going to the Lake of the Ozarks is exotic. Get a real life!

  31. QueenMab says:

What does St. L have to offer besides Laurell K Hamilton’s truly repetitive and nasty, poorly written Vampire/shapeshifter PORN novels?? Seriously, it must be a WELL KEPT Secret, as in it for sure doesn’t exist!!! If not for that tacky writer putting St L on the imaginary map with her gawdawful vampire porn books, I don’t think anyone would think of St L at all…GC is probably filming there because it’s CHEAP, or didn’t you lot notice that there’s a depression going on?? Keep on pimping St L, cause no one else is!!

  32. ZGare says:

I live in St. Louis and I love it here. QueenMab, I don’t know who your Laurell K Hamilton is, and I don’t really care. But it sounds like you have read a lot of her stuff, since you call it repetitive. Maybe Clooney was filming here because its cool. In any case, I never saw him and had better things to do. Too bad he wasn’t here for summer nights when things are really happening.

  33. stl4life says:

(otherwise known as George Clooney stalks around airports in bland, featureless cities like St. Louis)

-St.Louis may not be known for its star sightings, but just because you don’t see people like Paris Hilton roaming downtown everyday doesn’t mean it’s “bland” and “featureless”. St.Louis is a great city, and until you live there don’t prejugde it.

  34. STL GIRL says:

Ok, St. Louis is not bland or featureless, if you have not noticed we have great historical places to visit and sites to see. We asre also the headquater to the largest beer company, and as for being in the ghetto thats anywhere in the US there are places in new york, LA and Michingan that are comsidered bad area. As for celebrities yes it was mentioned he was here filming but people didn’t stopthere everyday lives. So all you haters need to get over yourselfs.
