Grammy noms announced: Beyonce, Ariana, Miley, Taylor, Iggy & more

Ariana Grande

The first wave of Grammy nominations rolled out this morning. Pharrell and Ed Sheeran announced the list on CBS This Morning, and you can watch the video here. These aren’t all the categories, but they’re some big ones. The usual suspects popped up on the list of course. There are some surprises too. Everyone knew Beyonce would snag a nomination, but Miley’s on the shortlist for Bangerz as Best pop album. I really thought she’d get shut out of the awards process, yet she’s receiving recognition. She won’t win though. The award will probably go to Sam Smith, don’t you think? Here’s the rundown:

Best pop vocal album:
Ghost Stories, Coldplay
Bangerz, Miley Cyrus
My Everything, Ariana Grande
Prism, Katy Perry
X, Ed Sheeran
In the Lonely Hour, Sam Smith

Best urban contemporary album:
Sail Out, Jhene Aiko
Beyoncé, Beyoncé
X, Chris Brown
Mali Is …, Mali Music
Girl, Pharrell Williams

Record of the year:
Fancy, Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX
Chandelier, Sia
Stay With Me, Sam Smith
Shake It Off, Taylor Swift
All About That Bass, Meghan Trainor

Best pop solo performance:
All of Me, John Legend
Chandelier, Sia
Stay With Me, Sam Smith
Shake it Off, Taylor Swift
Happy, Pharrell

Best rock song:
Ain’t it Fun, Paramore
Blue Moon, Beck
Fever, The Black Keys
Gimme Something Good, Ryan Adams
Lazaretto, Jack White

Best country album:
Riser, Dierks Bentley
The Outsiders, Eric Church
12 Stories, Brandy Clark
Platinum, Miranda Lambert
The Way I’m Livin’, Lee Ann Womack

Here’s another shocker: Iggy Azalea is up for Record of the year. Nicki Minaj must be seething about that one, but she’ll probably hold her venom intact until the Rap category is announced. Other than that, this list isn’t too controversial. I’m glad to see Jack White grab a spot, but is Paramore really considered “rock”? These categories are so whack. The rest of the list should be interesting, whenever it comes out. Taylor Swift will probably grab a few more nods. Ugh, Coldplay.

Just gotta say that I enjoyed the heck out of Bangerz. Was going through an insanely hard breakup last Christmas and Miley, Bey, and LDR really helped get me through all that crap and the ensuing depression.

    • Lex says:

It’s actually got some great songs on there. Miley has the voice for country songs that’s for sure.

  2. mimif says:

Coldplay being nominated is almost as nauseating as seeing Chris Brown’s name up there.

    • susie says:

      that’s what I said!! jinx!

    • QQ says:

Almost but not quite cause Chris Martin just has a shitty Falsetto ( Falshitty) but Fists Brown is still being allowed in places and is a thing

    • Jedi says:

Agreed – wtf Grammys, why is that douchenozzle invited, let alone nominated? gross.

      • Kim1 says:

The same reason Charlie Sheen , Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn are nominated for awards .Its based on their films, records, shows, etc not their personal life

    • Charlie says:

Ariana Grande? Iggy Azalea? ARIANA GRANDE?! I’ll take Colplay over them any day of the week. And no, nowhere near Chris Brown. Not even close.

The record of the year category must be one of the shittiest ever.

      • Grant says:

Sorry, but My Everything is a GREAT album. Still listening to it months after it was released. Go Ariana!

      • SpookySpooks says:

My Everything was horrible. Beyonce’s album too. The Grammy’s are about popularity, not talent.

      • Jayna says:

Record of the Year is not Album of the Year. Record of the Year is for a track, one song.

“Record of the Year is related to but is conceptually different from Song of the Year or Album of the Year:

Record of the Year is awarded for a single or for one track from an album. This award goes to the performing artist, the producer, recording engineer, and/or mixer for that song. In this sense, “record” means a particular recorded song, not its composition or an album of songs.

Song of the Year is also awarded for a single or individual track, but the recipient of this award is the songwriter who actually wrote the lyrics and/or melodies to the song. Thus, “song” in this context means the song as composed, not its recording.”

Album of the Year is awarded for a whole album, and the award is presented to the artist, producer, recording engineer, and mastering engineer for that album. So, in this context, “album” means a recorded collection of songs (a multi-track LP, CD, or download package), not the individual songs or their compositions

      • Veruca Salt says:

Taylor Swift? TAYLOR SWIFT?? Her album was one of the corniest albums with the most repetitive and cliched, most unoriginal songs I’ve heard this year. I don’t know if it’s an Emperor’s New Clothes situation but it was really bad, (putting emphasis one word is one of the things she is guilty of. Does it on EVERY song. EVERY. SONG. Most of it is the emphasis is on the word, “I”.) unpopular opinion, I know, but I think “Ms Starbucks Lovers” is one of the most overrated people in music who has every news outlet and big corporation blowing smoke up her ass.

      • Veruca Salt says:

        Yup. Agreed.

  3. Kitten says:

    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  4. FingerBinger says:

Meh. I do hope Sam Smith wins. He’s a really talented singer.

  5. Marie-France says:

Am I the only one who hated Pharrell´s Girl album? I only liked one song (Hunter) and I really tried because I think he´s very talented (and sexy. Also loved Prince back in the days so I guess I have a thing for guys who sings in falsetto wearing eyeliner). He is settled and seems happy (!!) so maybe that has something to do with it? I don´t think that you have to be unhappy in order to make great music but you need to be hungry for whatever is your thing. N.E.R.D and Neptunes is still his best work.

  6. TX says:

Katy Perry for a vocal performance?? Ummm………what?

  7. Alexandra says:

Huh, Ed Sheeran and Chris Brown have the same album name. Good thing they are not nominated in the same category.

  8. maybeiamcrazy says:

*eyeroll* Even Oscars seem like a %100 fair and objective next to Grammys.

  9. theoneandonly says:

Whenever the subject of the Grammy’s comes up I pull out an article from a few years ago from my local paper about all the artists that never won album of the year in order to dismiss today’s Grammys: a partial list:
The Who, Radiohead, Bruce Springsteen, The Band, CSN, David Bowie, Aretha franklin, Marvin Gaye, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell, Prince, Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke, Johnny Cash, Al Green, smokey robinson, van morrison.
You can see why many regard today’s Grammy’s and all awards shows as just industry events for industry product.
And who would argue that all the above artists will be played long after Tay tay and iggy and coldplay, etc. are in the rubbish can.

    • Jayna says:

The Grammys has become so pop-oriented nowadays, a far cry from what The Grammys used to be. The tide might be turning back. I am anxious to see what The Album of The Year noms are tonight.

  10. serena says:

Oh well, seems like an unpopular opinion but I think Coldplay deserved the nomination, they do make good music and have amazing live concerts.
I don’t get all the hate frankly..

    • Anna says:

I am glad you get to enjoy them, everyone has different tastes and different pulls. However, the reason is beacause they make absolute rubbish creatively and musically speaking. That’s their thing, to appeal to the masses with inferior quality music.

      • Alexandra says:

I liked their “Parachutes” and “A Rush of Blood to the Head” albums. There hasn’t been any other single of them I truly enjoyed post-God put a Smile Upon Your Face, which is also probably my favorite Coldplay song. As for Chris Martin, he falls under my I-would-like-his-songs-more-if-someone-with-better-vocals-would-sing-them category. But hey, unpopular or not, if this is what you enjoy, then go for it. Tastes are opinions, not truths.

      • Charlie says:

” they make absolute rubbish creatively and musically speaking. That’s their thing, to appeal to the masses with inferior quality music.”

You just described almost all the people mentioned above.
I like Coldplay, their first few albums were really good.

  11. Duckie says:

Watch Iggy do exactly what Macklemore did last year…. and I don’t understand why you always mention Nicki like it is just a matter of jealousy. The issue of Nicki mad at Iggy being crowned Hip Hop anything is clearly deeper than that…

    • Nick says:

      This.

    • Charlie says:

As someone who doesn’t know all that much about hip-hop, what was the issue with Macklemore?

      • Duckie says:

Macklemore won the major hip-hop categories, there was outrage especially since he won best hip-hop album against Kendrick Lamar, whose album is a masterpoece. Macklemore heard the outrage and did the corniest thing ever : he posted on Instagram the text message he sent to Kendrick to apologize because he knew his album wasn’t good enough *rolls eyes*. Anyway I bet Iggy is going to win the hip hop categories 🙁

    • Tiffany :) says:

I hate that my options for mainstream female rap artists are Iggy or Nicki. How about neither?

      • Marie-France says:

I actually think that Nicki is a good rapper. Anaconda was incredibly dumb but I do think that she has talent. Loved her feature on “Monster”, she has a strong voice and she can be playful. Kendrick Lamar, “i” is nominated for Best Rap Performance. Him, on the other hand, I love. Such a great and versatile artist.

  12. Pri says:

These categories need to be revised. Pharrell is nominated in the pop and urban categories. I’d say he is more pop than R&B.

    • Nick says:

He’s black so no matter how Pop it truly is, it gets considered R&B. It’s the same with Rihanna too. Her last album won in the R&B album category.

  13. Oh. says:

Mali Music up against the likes of Beyonce! Never thought i’d see the day. Hope you win guys, youre fantastic 🙂

  14. kri says:

I heart Jack White. For why is he not nominated for “Lazaretto” as album of the year. Siiiiiiiiiigh.

    • Jayna says:

I don’t think it’s worthy as it’s uneven to me, but still good.

But Album of the Year hasn’t been announced yet as far as who is nominated. That is announced tonight during a Christmas special.

  15. Mellie says:

I like Sam Smith, the DJ’s are wearing me out on him…

  16. Miss M says:

Didn’t coldplay announce they will make their last album?

    • SpookySpooks says:

Sam has an amazing voice, but the album as a whole, while it did have a few gems, was mediocre.

      Ups, wrong spot.

    • Jayna says:

They’re writing it as if it’s their last album so putting their all into it, not complacent, and is the ending of something he says. They aren’t going away permanently. Who is he fooling?

      • Miss M says:

Guy is so hot… If they go away, I won’t miss the cr@ppy Music they have been doing in the past few years, but I will miss Guy.

  17. Wooley says:

Prism was AWFUL how the f did it get nominated?

  18. Noella says:

Miley.. MILEY? This is the same BS that happened when they nominated Thicke.

But no, she’s against Sam and Ed, who are both insanely amazing artists. Sam did so amazing this year, I’m afraid he’s probably going to win, even though I realllyyyy want Ed Sheeran to win at least ONE Grammy. X and In The Lonely Hour are some of the best albums I’ve listened to this year.

    • Jayna says:

Miley put out a good pop album. But she won’t win, so don’t worry. One of your boys will defnitely win.

  19. Jayna says:

Album of the Year noms won’t be announced until tonight. Record of the year is nice, getting a grammy for a song, but Album of the Year is the golden prize of all the awards. I reposted what I had posted above showing the differences in awards.

I was glad to see U2’s Songs of Innocence is nominated for best rock album of the year. I seriously love that album. Although, Ryan Adams is a strong contender, who put out a great album too. Wny no Spoons? Their album is great.

  20. Amy says:

What the heck is urban contemporary? I don’t pay any attention to the Grammys so it’s possible that category has existed for years and I just never noticed. But I thought Beyonce was pop? I am terrible at music genres.

    • Kim1 says:

They used to call it R and B. Michael Jackson used to get nominated in R and B category and Pop category also

  21. aquarius64 says:

I thought the Grammys was about music. I guess not given this line up.

These picks are to guarantee the 18-49 demographic watches the show. ARAS sold out to get the MTV crowd watching their show. CBS better have the 7-second delay ready, especially with these pop tarts on the roster.

  22. Claire says:

Wow the Grammys are so ridiculous. I can never watch these shows – enjoy the movie ones so much more. People are always way more interesting. Its good when someone truely talented receives the recognition, but normally its the Ariana types and Beyonces that end up reaping the awards. I know people love Beyonce, but she seems to be able to spew out any old crap and have it labelled art. Plus she belives she is a goddess. So irritating!

  23. Veruca Salt says:

Geez, even Lana del Ray deserves a nomination over Katy Perry. Grammy’s are a popularity contest this year.
