Duchess Kate was mistaken for Elsa from ‘Frozen’ while in Harlem

130064PCN_Royal28

Here are more photos of Duchess Kate’s Harlem outing on Monday. We’ll have the photos from the Nets game later, I promise! We got better photos of Kate in later on yesterday, so I wanted to use them. We’re getting a better look at her Goat coat, and the Daily Mail says that Kate had Goat (or someone) alter the $1000 coat to make it longer. You can see the extra fabric panel in these photos. Kate and her expensive coats… I’m not sure I get it. I mean, if you’re going to drop $1000 for a coat, God bless, but why double the cost to get a suit jacket altered into a light autumn “mod” coat? Why not just buy a different coat that’s already the length you want? I guess that shows why I’m not a duchess.

Here’s an adorable story about Kate’s interaction with the kids in Harlem: when she walked into the Northside Center, all of the kids thought she was Elsa from Frozen!!! Rose Ann Harris, director of early childhood service, told media outlets: “They thought she was the Princess from Frozen. When they heard she was coming they thought it was Elsa – we said a Princess and they got a Princess.” Well, technically they got a duchess, but sure. You know who is thrilled with this? DISNEY!!! Also: I once babysat for a kid who thought I was Jasmine from Aladdin. No joke!

After the trip to Harlem, Kate then went solo to a lunch at the British Consul General’s home in NYC. It was a nice luncheon full of British ex-pats or Brits who just live and work in NYC just because. The group included Matthew Rhys (yum), Colin Callender, Simon Collins, and more. They ate poached salmon and a dessert of apple and rhubarb crumble. No liquor for Kate either! Not even a sip of wine, apparently.

As for how Kate is feeling on this trip… by most accounts, she’s perfectly fine. In photos, she looks fine, maybe a little bit tired (but that could be jet lag). However, wherever she goes in NYC, she’s being trailed by an ambulance. No joke.

Kaiser, your pictures of Kate always crack me up!

  2. Louise says:

She looks really goofy and silly.

    • Luciana says:

      She looks happy.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Luciana•

She and William *both* look very happy. Seeing William look this happy for any stretch of time is truly…a wonder to behold! Lol

    • inthekitchen says:

She was actually in mid-eye roll in that first picture after the woman behind her asked to wrap presents. I think she comes across as smug and rude a lot of the time. She acts like a 15-year-old with the eye rolling.

  3. Senaber says:

Wow she’s so boring the most interesting thing you could say about her was this headline. Poor writers having to put their audiences to sleep because Princess Snoozy is no longer flashing the royal biscuit. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz…

    • Jules says:

I don’t understand why the media is so obsessed with this couple.

    • megan says:

Well I suppose we could have a conversation about the socio-economic factors that contribute to the issues Northside Center addresses, but that would not make for fun gossip.

      • Senaber says:

I’m just saying… Compare her to Harry. Harry wrapping presents with kids would lead to a cute verbal interaction, some pictures of him hugging children or laughing with them, and possibly a short speech or statement. She even made sitting court side at an NBA game boring! I love the Queen and would have loved someone to bring a little more charisma to the RF than boring old Kate.

  4. SK says:

Yeah I noticed that extra panel straight away in your older photos. It looks crappy. I don’t get it?

    • Louise says:

The extra fabric was added so she couldn’t flash the world.

      • SK says:

Yeah I get that. What I don’t get is why you wouldn’t just buy a longer coat instead of making a short, expensive one look crappy by adding the panel. There are a million beautiful coats of all sorts of lengths out there. Doing this just seems weird and tacky.

      • Deedee says:

Can you imagine what the people at Goat thought? “Um, yeah, you want to do what?” And they can’t really tell her no.

      • anne_000 says:

I think she’s thinking that she could substitute her preference for wearing mini-skirts & mini-dresses by wearing a coat about the same length as them with whatever underneath being even shorter.

With this outfit, I noticed in some photos that underneath she is wearing a mini-skirt/dress/slip shorter than her coat.

  5. SK says:

Oh, and please, please, please cover that hilariously uncomfortable video of her with Le Bron’s arm around her!! Her FACE!! Ha ha! I don’t think anyone has just leaned in for a casual arm-around-you photo like that with her for years.

    • Ally.M says:

If someone put their arm around me with pits soaked in sweat I would recoil too. Gross.

      • FLORC says:

Not even sweat. She might have not been aware her personal space was about to be invaded. The recoil is natural when people aren’t in a more relaxed state.

  6. crumpetsfortea says:

    That eyeliner…let it go.

  7. Someonestolemyname says:

I was reading the original story in some of the US outlets, it said the students Were Disappointed Kate was NOT Elsa from Frozen. The British press and some outlets quickly spun it to make it look more positive for Kate.

Someone wrote that Kate made a face when they were disappointed she wasn’t the Princess.

    • Dany says:

Yes, they were disappointed. It´s kind of funny, but it doesn´t surprise me and it is not Kate´s fault. Little kids know Princesses only from Disney. So of course they think Elsa or Snow White or whoever is coming if they hear a Princess will visit them. Kids don´t know the “real world royals” and wouldn´t recognize them in the streets. They don´t read gossip mags or watch the news.
So someone told those kids that they will meet a Princess and all they got was some brunette woman in a coat without the “Disney Princess-gear”.

    • LadySlippers says:

      •Someonestolemyname•

I had only read that the kids were bummed because she wasn’t Elsa. Lol. Kids are like that…😊

      • FLORC says:

Yea. The title is misleading. The kids heard a real life princess that lives in a real castle was coming to visit. The kids knee-jerk reaction was Frozen’s Elsa. Not that they confused Kate with Elsa upon seeing her.

    • perplexed says:

I definitely knew who Diana was when I was a kid, but maybe that’s because of my mom. I guess moms are not talking about Kate Middleton at home.

      • Ally.M says:

Probably because she’s a wicked, smug, boring, evil person.

      • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Princess Diana was a) famous and b) really a princess. It’s different.

      • LadySlippers says:

•We Are All Made of Stars•

Kate though IS a princess. She’s Princess William just like Diana (while married) was The Princess Charles. Princess Diana was never her title.

      • sketches says:

        Ally.M – she’s wicked and evil? I didn’t understand that comment.

      • taxi says:

Doubtful that preschoolers @ Northside Harlem knew of Diana back in the day.

      • FLORC says:

        Sketches
When someone posts something like that it’s not worth engaging. No feeding the trolls as they say.

        LadySlippers
But Diana is better known as Princess diana or Princess Di than other proper titles. It may not be because it was literal, but rather great marketing, endearing nature.

      • Lou says:

LadySlippers: I don’t think she was Princess Charles. Charles has always been Prince of Wales, so Diana became Diana, Princess of Wales. Kate isn’t the princess of anywhere yet, and she won’t be Princess of Wales til Charles is king.

Diana was higher in the royal food chain from the get-go.

    • wiffie says:

Kids and their Frozen love… When I introduce my little blond 2 year old daughter to other kids, they hear her name is Elsa and their eyes get really wide and so excited, “is she a princess??”

Fwiw, She was born November ’12, a year before the movie when the name was original, uncommon, and unique while classic (and #870-something!), because we didn’t want trendy and top twenty. I hope it doesn’t go the way of Ariel, where the character is the first thought at hearing the name. I love it so much though, I don’t regret choosing it ever.

  8. The Wizz says:

Elsa was the Queen, Ana is the princess.

    • LadySlippers says:

      •The Wizz•

Minor technicality children sometimes miss. 😊 Besides, princesses are better!

    • Argirl says:

Depends on which point in the movie you are referencing. Elsa was a princess before her parents died. Sad that I know this.

    • FLORC says:

This is covered in Cinemasins Everything wrong with frozen. There’s so much wrong with that movie.

  9. Sixer says:

I feel that Disney should buy her. She can stay your side of the Pond and make direct to video princess films for the rest of her life. Perhaps duet with Hiddlesburp or somesuch.

    (I’m feeling waspish today).

    • LadySlippers says:

      •Sixer•

Oh NO! We Americans wouldn’t want to deprive you of YOUR Princess, so please, please keep her. Although, your offer is exceedingly generous. Much too generous in fact. However, we’d be willing to take a Hot Ginger Prince off your hands. Princes are SO boring compared to Princesses. That’s fair, right????

      😉

      • FLORC says:

        LadySlippers
You are SO generous here! Taking such a burden off their hands. You truly have a large heart! And I agree. Let us in the states take the Hot Prince Ginge off their hands. He was only trouble anyways 😉

    • Sixer says:

You can have all of them, insofar as I’m concerned! Even the Ginge. Couldn’t they all in live in flats built on the wrong bridge you guys bought?! (Sorry – couldn’t resist!)

    • Calcifer says:

@Sixer ‘I feel that Disney should buy her.’ Very funny indeed!

  10. Abbott says:

That’s funny, I get mistaken for Pumbaa all.the.time.

  11. Luciana says:

Kate has been looking really pretty and younger. The extra weight is doing wonders in her face.

  12. scout says:

Haha. Goofy pic. Looks like she is having fun in NY 🙂

  13. burnsie says:

If she’s so sick that she needs an ambulance trailing her, why make two transatlantic flights in 72 hours? No one would have blamed her for staying home. I’m surprised NYC agreed to that given what’s going on in the city

    • bluhare says:

I think it’s standard, and the president has one as well.

      • inthekitchen says:

From what I understand, the president has one in case he is assassinated! Not just because he might feel ill. When Obama went to the hospital the other day, he went by car, not ambulance.

Also, they (W/K) don’t have ambulances following them around all over England/UK (and there is no mention of William being followed by an ambulance, when he would be the most like target)…so I really don’t see why she needs one here.

      • wolfpup says:

NYC always has an ambulance trailing any dignitary in town.

      • FLORC says:

        Agree with Wolfpup.
This is just a precaution and to avoid any possible traffic encountered responding.

    • The Original Mia says:

Exactly. Her ankles are swollen. That bruising on her arm looks like multiple IV drips. It was not necessary for her to come on this trip. She was chasing after William. Again. Just as she left George when he was a baby to run off with William to that private island. She’s doing it again with this baby. Instead of staying home and allowing Wills his little bachelor jaunt to NY, she’s tagging along, sick, tired, and grumpy.

      • Chrissy says:

Maybe she thought Jecca was going to be at the fundraiser and she was just holding on to her man! (snark)

      • wiffie says:

What’s swollen about those ankles?!? And either way, swollen ankles don’t equal bed rest. I had a decently easy pregnancy, totally textbook, healthy, no swollen ankles ever… EXCEPT the one time I flew. For some reason being on a plane made them balloon to extensions of my calves with mickey hands for my feet. But that doesn’t mean I was too fragile to travel.

She is damned if she does, damned if she doesn’t, and that sucks for her. Pants- she’d be “not taking it seriously, just wear a damn dress”. Dress, and she’s a floozy. She could have really loved the coat and just wanted it longer to avoid getting shit on, but we shit on her for lengthening a coat so it doesn’t flash. What can ya do? Admit, she’ll never win. There will always be something.

      • wolfpup says:

Jecca must always be in the back of Kate’s mind. Seriously, it takes just a smidgen to move from the closest friendship, to a tad more. It will be interesting to see how this plays out over the years. Apparently William is very enthusiastic about the time he spent with Jecca in Africa.

On the other hand, William is becoming so goofy looking, I think he’s downright lucky to have Barbie-doll Kate.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •wiffie•

Change in air pressure during flight can cause swelling in anyone — pregnant women are just more sensitive to the pressure changes.

        And I didn’t see any swollen ankles…

      • FLORC says:

        *investigates swollen ankes/iv bruising*
        What? Where?!
LadySlippers is on point. The swelling is even common for even those walking around in heels for short periods of time. Kate is currently retaining a bit more than usual so if she had swollen ankles that could more likely be the cause. I don’t see it though.

And I bet Kate gets blood drawn here and there. So much extra attention is given to the future royal. I bet it happens more than you would think. Not for an IV though.
Also an average phlebotomist will leave a slight bruise. It’s skill and proper vit k to avoid it. You’d be shocked at how many peoples aren’t getting proper vit K!

    • Megan says:

I live in DC and it is not at all unusual to see an ambulance traveling with a foreign dignitary’s motorcade.

    • burnsie says:

Oh, ok didn’t realize it was standard. Whoops!

  14. Lisa Danielle says:

Can any experts help me on this: Kate is A princess, right? Just not “Princess Kate”, she’s Princess William. I know Duchess is a higher title so we call her that, but would it be incorrect to call her a princess?

    • LadySlippers says:

      •Lisa Danielle•

Yes, in the UK a woman takes on her husband’s full title so Kate IS a princess. So she is Princess William and it’s okay to use Pss W — it’s just not common. FYI Diana was The Princess Charles* (as is Camilla now) and Sophie is The Princess Edward*.

*Children of the British Sovereign add a ‘The’ in front of prince/princess and do not use a territorial designator.

Example: Charles and Anne at their births were HRH Prince Charles of Edinburgh/ HRH Princess Anne of Edinburgh. When their mother ascended the throne they became: HRH The Prince Charles and HRH The Princess Anne.

  15. Zigggy says:

She looks more like Belle than Elsa.

  16. vauvert says:

I will be a lone voice here and say I actually liked the coat but she should have put on pants or a skirt to go with it, and different shoes. She does not seem grumpy in the pics, haven’t seen videos, but I finally concluded she is just immature and not exactly bright. Her clothing and behaviour in general are suited to someone about ten years younger. If Taylor Swift went around in short coats and high heels it would be fine. But a pregnant woman in her thirties technically on a business trip should wear a nice pantsuit and a mid-heel, put her hair up, go easy on the make-up and call it a day.
As far as her going along, I will defend her on that. If she stayed home, we would call her lazy (which she is as we all know). If she went, she gets flak for it. How could she win that one??
And as for the kids being dissapointed, whoever talked to them about the visit messed up the job, because when you tell kids about a princess visiting, damn right they expect a Disney princess in a dress and tiara. It takes someone far more experienced than Kate to deal with a bunch of dissapointed kids voicing their confusion. And just for fun, can you imagine if she had actually gone dressed in a long gown with a tiara on, how precious that would have been for the kids??

    • LadySlippers says:

      •vauvert•

On the last post, someone linked Goat’s site in which this coat is part of a pantsuit. I think a good many of us think Kate should have stuck with the original intent of the ensemble (I’m still not nuts about it but whatever).

      • Chrissy says:

Agree Lady. But with lower heels. Surely she would have known that she’s have bend to get down to their level. But maybe she wanted another flashing moment in front of the kids. Jeez….

    • FLORC says:

      Vauvert
I’m a broken record on this, but wouldn’t Kate look awesome in a fine tailored trouser suit? IMO trousers can show off your legs and butt without showing anything. Create a little mystery. No one cares once you’ve flashed it all.

There’s a solid theory out there Kate shows her legs off more when William is around to keep his attention. She’s yet to prove it wrong.

And no. Kate would not be seen as lazy if she stayed behind. She could work. Do even 1 event like she did here with the Harlem school kids. If she did nothing or was seen shopping it’s just understood that’s Kate. It’s what she does. Not the 1st thing in ones mind to be calling her lazy. This is just the baseline.

  17. Kcarp says:

My 3 year old insists we call her Rylee Princess. I think the Goat is ok if coat dresses are your thing

  18. Marianne says:

You’re title makes it sound like she walked in and everyone started calling her Elsa or something. The kids were told a princess was coming and they thought it was Elsa. They never really thought Kate herself was the princess. I saw a video. They had to point to Kate and be like “Shes the princess”.
