Tom Hiddleston is thrilled to play a ‘mysterious & complex kind of British hero’

dragonfly bait

Aren’t you the lucky ones? You get a little pre-Golden Globe gossip about Tom Hiddleston. Is anyone else sort of surprised by Tommy’s almost-total radio silence lately? He didn’t tweet anything over the holidays. He actually hasn’t tweeting anything since October 2014. But! We have gotten lots of Hiddles casting news and updates about his various projects. I kind of think 2015 is going to a major year of Tommy, where he finally transitions from “Loki/internet-boyfriend” to something much more substantial. We’ll see.

First of all, a minor update on Kong: Skull Island. Hiddleston was the first major hire for the production, and from what I gather, he has the lead role. JK Simmons has signed on for a role (I’m assuming a supporting role) and now Michael Keaton is in talks for a role as well. Keaton and Hiddles in the same movie? Wow. That might be really interesting.

Meanwhile, there’s an update on the miniseries project, The Night Manager. It was always going to be a TV miniseries based on the John le Carre book, and once again, Hiddleston was one of the first to sign on, along with Hugh Laurie. On Saturday, AMC announced that they would be partnering with The Ink Factory and BBC One to make the miniseries. Meaning it will air on BBC One in the UK and on AMC in America. AMC is going to have a sizable gap in their programming this year, with no Breaking Bad and only the final seven episodes of Mad Men (those will premiere in April). The Night Manager won’t begin filming until spring 2015, and I’m assuming that means a 2016 air date? Perhaps. You can read more about the story and the production details here. Tommy released a statement now that everything has been squared away (the “Jonathan Pine” he refers to is the character he will play).

Tom Hiddleston said: “I could not be more excited to join BBC One, The Ink Factory and AMC for ‘The Night Manager.’ Jonathan Pine is a thrilling prospect. Described by John le Carré as a ‘sometime army wolfchild with a special unit’ in the British forces, ‘caterer, chef, itinerant hotelier, perpetual escapee from emotional entanglements, collector of other people’s languages, self-exiled creature of the night and sailor without a destination,’ Jonathan Pine is the most mysterious and complex kind of British hero. It’s an honor and a privilege to work with such truly impeccable collaborators as Hugh Laurie and Susanne Bier in bringing this to the screen. David Farr’s screenplay, adapted from le Carré’s brilliant novel, is absolutely outstanding. I’m beyond thrilled and I can’t wait.”

[From TV by the Numbers]

In case you had any doubt, Hiddles is a total pro. He’s a company man. He will shill for his employers no matter what. If he’s asked to dance, he will dance his heart out. If he’s asked to sing, he will belt it out. Bless his heart.

GIve his agents a raise! They seem to be doing a wonderful job of getting him parts. Hopefully he will be able to shed to Loki image eventually and realy have a place in movies/TV/theater. Well played so far.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Not just parts but very varied parts, which require range.

      • **sighs** says:

And that’s why (I think) he’s going to have a lot of career longevity. Range of type and diversity in mediums. Love that he has no problem bouncing from blockbuster to indie to tv and theatre.

      • Hero says:

New here, it’s what I love the most about him, he’s brave enough to play varied part. You feel that he enjoy his jobs and he want to expand diversify his capacity. Boy got a lot of range.

    • icerose says:

not just varied parts but lead parts as well. Just glad the parts he wants are falling into place,.He also seems to be attracting other stars to work with him as well.
I found some great awards that OLLA is up for best picture and Tom and Tilda are also up for Best Depiction of Nudity, Sexuality or Seduction. All women voters??
      http://www.hitfix.com/in-contention/birdman-only-lovers-left-alive-popular-with-alliance-of-women-film-journalists

      • Lilacflowers says:

Actually, I wouldn’t be excited about lead parts if they all resulted in the same depiction, a type. These don’t seem like they will.

      • lunchcoma says:

Well, variety and quality as well. Skull Island sounds like it will probably be a silly popcorn movie, but I’ll give all of them a pass on an occasional one of those. Crimson Peak, High Rise, ISTL, and now this are all quite different and all seem likely to be good.

      • icerose says:

@Lilacflowers that is what I meant they are lead roles but very diverse.

    • MtnRunner says:

Hell yeah, to all of this, ladies. So happy for our sweet Tommyanna. He’s taking risks, showing more range and this is gonna be his year, methinks.

      • rosie says:

I think it took a lot of guts to take on the Hank Williams role in ISTL. Hope he knocks it out of the park. 🙂

      • MtnRunner says:

Yes, it took come colossal-sized cojones for a posh Brit to tackle an American icon like Hank. I have no doubt that Tom will nail it. I just hope the script and director are equally good and can showcase Tom’s talents effectively.

      • icerose says:

Tom is the dancing bear with king size cojones.

  2. Lilacflowers says:

They need to cast the female roles in both these projects soon, which should be interesting. Keaton has supposedly stopped negotiating and agreed to take the part.

    • Lilacflowers says:

And he’s doing a Q&A at Nuffield Theatre in February, the same night as the Oscars, which means he won’t be doing any Oscar PR appearances.

      • InvaderTak says:

Yay! This sounds like fun. Go Keaton!

      • TotallyBiased says:

        Well, TOM is doing a Q & A at Nuffield. 😉
Keaton will presumably be at the Oscars.
And yes, he confirmed like two days ago for Skull Island.

      • icerose says:

I did not realise it was the same night as the Oscars-this suits me fine -I shall staying at a substandard Hilton and enjoying the charms of the “company man”. The Oscars will be a mere blimp in my consciousness,There is no filming or taping but I will do my best to remember the important details

      • InvaderTak says:

Oops replied in the wrong place! Lol I have a pounding headache so it’s a wonder I’m not raving about football on this site.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@InvaderTek, because the exclamation: “WTF Edelman!!!!!” has been screamed throughout my household almost non-stop since early last evening, I’m surprised I’m not typing football blather too.

    • rosie says:

Well, I just happen to be available! What a coincidence ! I also have a lot of…range.

  3. Tig says:

I really don’t get the digs at him as far as promoting his projects. Heck, I’m excited about Le Carre one as well. He can tone down the dance offs a bit, for sure.

    • Lilacflowers says:

He also seems to do the dancing only for the lighter roles. There was no dancing or juggling when promoting Hollow Crown.

    • **sighs** says:

Nothing wrong with promoting your work and being a team player. And he doesn’t seem to inject his private life into said promotion. Smart man.

    • InvaderTak says:

Yeah, not getting the snark for that either. He seems to have a good strategy that works for him and his employers. The overly cutsey stuff only comes out when needed. But he overall keeps up the enthusiasm and loves everybody. Not good for the salacious, conspiracy theory side of gossip but good when I just want to f$)#*))$ enjoy a movie.

    • icerose says:

I think he has a firm grasps of his boundaries when it comes to promotion. He made Thor 2 fun for himself and others without getting to personal or moaning and he knows when to hold back at key events and more serious PR stuff.

    • MtnRunner says:

With the more serious projects he has coming out this year, I don’t think we’ll be seeing the dancing bear. He didn’t bring it out with the OLLA promos and based on the boundaries that he seems to have set with fans last year, I think he’s matured in dealing with his fame and fans.

As much as I miss seeing him in the news, I’m glad he’s not pimping out his private life and getting papped regularly. Good for him for staying under the radar these past few weeks. I hope he’s been eating like a horse, putting on weight, well rested and having fun.

    • M.A.F. says:

I think with BoraBora Gate and all that nonsense with the play behind him, he learned a lesson. Don’t break down that 4th Wall, put up the boundaries and keep quiet on personal stuff. I wouldn’t mind seeing the dancing bear a little bit because he can make fun of himself unlike others.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I don’t think “BoraBora Gate” reached him at all. Just a meltdown in certain regions of the fandom.

      • MtnRunner says:

M.A.F., how was the BoraBora pic his fault? From what posters said here, he obliged the restaurant owner with a picture and someone facebooked it. Fans knew he was going to Tahiti because the airline lady posted his destination.

No matter how much he battens his personal life down, everyday paps are going to put it out there from time to time. I think he’s done very well with staying under the radar the past year.

      • jammypants says:

@Lilac, the fandom reached projection level 9000.

@Mtnrunner, I think MAF meant how he deals with the unrealistic demands of his fans. They were demanding he be truthful to them, like he owed them any explanation at all about his personal life. It was all kinds of eyeroll inducing.

      • philae says:

@Lilac it probably did since fans tweeted to Luke about it. And Jane surely talked to him about fans comments.

      • MtnRunner says:

jammy, I just didn’t understand why it’s called a “gate” when there was nothing scandalous about going on vacay with someone he’d been seen with the prior year. It seemed much ado about nothing to me and I’m glad he didn’t indulge anyone with commenting on it.

      • M.A.F. says:

Re: BoraBora Gate-what you all said. It is more on how he interacts and reacts to fans. Hopefully a lot of the crazies left and those that are fans of his because he acting are still around.

      • MtnRunner says:

M.A.F., Perhaps it was earlier, but I think Coriolanus was a turning point for him. The crazies were reportedly following him on the tube, leaving the performance early to queue up for stage door, blocking the door from people being able to get out, not obeying security and getting a bit too touchy with him. Eventually he stopped doing stage door altogether.

I do hope that he can discourage the cray cray as he goes about promoting his upcoming projects. Pulling back on his twitter and not interacting with fans was a good place to start. It’ll be interesting to see what he’s like with this round of promos coming up.

      • jammypants says:

@MtnRunner, people tend to make things bigger than they are. I didn’t get the fuss either. This is how it broke down to me: He went on a much deserved vacation with a lady friend. A chef recognized him and asked for a photo. Fans freak out over mystery (not so mystery woman). I say, good for him.

      • philae says:

@MtnRunner well, there’s a bit of dishonest about how people talk about this, plenty of posters here, some that now write with indifference only do so because there was no following and the relationship is over.
The freak out was due to the fact that the caption for that photo at first said she was his wife, and while of course he didn’t and he doesn’t owe anyone any explanation, after his interviews people were taken aback.
Personally, I don’t get why everyone always assumed she was a fwb (god I hate this word) and couldn’t just be a friend like Sian, provided Sian was just a friend and not a gf.

      • icerose says:

personally I think the focus on his fans is way over the top .I was reading about a fan stalking Benny in Boston and the others who turned up at the set and it was far worse than Crimson Peak etc.. Just look at what happens at the outdoor shoots for Sherlock.
Theatre is different as well because there has always been a tradition of stage door autographs it is just the stars are pulling in more autograph seekers, I heard bad things about Tennant and Law fans as well but because of his current internet popularity Tom’s events get blown out of proportion,
If you want to see someone who breaks the 4th have a look at John Barrowman.
My prediction is he will tweet a bit more when the films are coming up to release and he has a bit more time.

    • Anne tommy says:

How does the tom / sock monkey body language compare with the body language of another couple who hav been popular here recently? Are you there Kat?

  4. Kkhou says:

I remember when he was just a supporting role on Wallander. Speaking of- did Kenneth Brannagh play a large role in him originally getting the part of Loki?

    • Lilacflowers says:

Branagh was the director of Thor and probably had a lot of input but Feige makes final cast decisions.

    • InvaderTak says:

I believe TH gave him all the credit. I think i saw an interview where he said that after he didn’t get the role of Thor, KB asked him to come back and audition for Loki. I could be wrong, I’ll see if I can find that again.

      • Kkhou says:

Thanks for explaining! I figured he helped.

      • icerose says:

KB convinced them to give him an audition for Thor and when they saw the takes Marvel loved him but were not sure he was the best one for Thor.My understanding is that when he was asked to come back as the final six potential Thor’s he noticed it said it his contract for Thor or Loki. So right from the beginning they saw him as a possibility for Loki

      • jammypants says:

He didn’t audition for Loki. In a way he did when he showed Loki traits during Thor auditions. Branagh said he didn’t get Thor, but they gladly would offer him Loki instead. So he got rejected then offered a major role in the same phone conversation.

      • icerose says:

‘@Jimmyoants -He has said it was in the pre contract he had to sign that when he was called back for Thor that it was for either Thor or Loki and that he wondered at the time why that was in there. Tom even said at one point that Kevin afterwards said during Thor auditions they were looking at the charisma between Tom and the others with a view to casting him as Loki.

      • jammypants says:

@ice, we’re in the same train of thought. I was simply rebutting InvaderTak’s point about coming back to audition for Loki =)

      • icerose says:

        @Jimmypants my mistake.Sorry

      • Josa says:

KB probably helped his career tremendously by casting him in Thor. But Tom also helped KB a lot by doing such a great job in Thor and being one of the best part of the movie. As a director, surely that is what KB wants, be able to find the right person to play the part that will help the movie in every way. So Tom getting cast in Thor isn’t all KB’s doing, he simply was the right actor to be cast in it. I especially don’t understand why there’s insinuation that because Tom broke out in Thor, that means KB did him a favor above and beyond, that he wouldn’t have gotten the role by his work. In hindsight, Tom totally earned the role. I know Tom did say KB made his casting possible by telling the producers that Tom will deliver. But I’m rather sure that KB did the same thing to Hemsworth, since Chris is even more unknown than Tom and was a soap star before getting a role in Thor. From what I read, Chris said he was cut in the first round of audition, but his agent somehow convinced someone important to give him a second chance. So if nothing, Tom is a much more proven actor than Chris when KB cast both of them. They both worked out beautifully, which to me means KB is great in casting the right person in his film.

    • M.A.F. says:

I believe it was when they were doing a play together is when it was announced Brannah was directing Thor.

      • icerose says:

yes because he tells the tale of how dressed up as Ivanov he ran up the stairs with an empty water container pretending to be Thor as a joke.

      • M.A.F. says:

Yep. The only part of the timeline I’ve never worked out is the both seasons of Wallender, the play, and the movie. I guess I could look it up but I’ve assumed it was Season 1, play, Season 2, then movie, no?

      • icerose says:

@M.A,V. Yes because after Thor when his film career took off Tom has said KB kindly released him from Wallender,
Tom was cast in Ivanov by the Donmar just after he and KB did a radio play together during which KB asked him to do Wallender so they ended up spending a year together. That was followed by KB going to direct Thor after S2 and Tom going out to America after an American agent who picked him up after seeing him in either Ivanov or Othello.

  5. 'P'enny says:

I love that sock monkey picture! ❤️ What’s interesting is BBC have said they will be using Instagram during production & I for one can’t wAit to see hugh & tom pics on set. I get the feeling tom & hugh will be tweeting more over this one.

Now will he come out for the baftas? I don’t know the guy is taking some serious down time and following philosopher & life quote site. I wonder if it’s for his benefit or his tweet-starved harm inducing fan base 😁

    • Lilacflowers says:

He is probably taking down time because he is exhausted and needs to get himself back into shape. He’s also supposed to be doing Avengers re-shoots and Marvel wants total lock-down on all information about those, especially since the fact that he is in it at all was supposed to be a secret (thanks, Idris).

    • icerose says:

He might do the Bafta’s if they ask him to give out an award and he is free.
I think he is just very focused on his work at the moment and keeping the non necessary PR to the mimimum

  6. sad DSA says:

    Dear Mr. Thomas Hiddleston:

I’m not sure if you read CB (maybe your people can pass this on to you). But I have the exact monkey plushie (but with a green scarf) and I think your monkey and my monkey should date. I swear I’m not an Internet weirdo, I’m just saying your monkey and my monkey could be soulmates.

    Best regards,

    —DSA

    • InvaderTak says:

I’d ship it! This has to happen! Someone needs to start a mock twitter account called “HIddlesSockMonkey” if it hasn’t already been done.

    • icerose says:

sounds good just as long as the know about contraception-we do not want any SockMonkey announcements.

      • MtnRunner says:

        nice one, icerose. 🙂

      • sad DSA says:

But they’re posh monkeys, icerose. Posh monkeys don’t do contraception (it’s, like, protocol).

PS: Not sure if I’m using that word correctly even. Sorry.

      • icerose says:

@DSA not quite -non use of contraception is like going off piste when skiing depite the warnings-it comes under “entitlement” which is a synonym for stupidity

      • Grace says:

Personally I am loving the posh.shade.2015 edition. Shall we thank he-who-must-not-be-name for bringing it to us? 🙂 Very much doubt that’s his intention though.

  7. Sixer says:

He’s such a gusher! He’s like, “My name is Tommy and I love every single thing that ever crosses my path – yes, even Avatar – plus I have a veritable host of polysyllabic adjectives to prove it. Thanks for the vocab, Eton. It doesn’t half come in handy when you’re shilling.”

I hope he never tweets a single thing ever again. I like him much more when he’s tweetless. Hopefully, the types of things he is signing up for – and I approve of most of them – won’t require tweet-type PR and Tommy will stay in my good books.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      “Tweetless” A priceless word.

    • Kiddo says:

      Haha! @Sixer

    • TotallyBiased says:

They don’t have females at Eton, do they?
This is from Susanne Bier, the (Academy Award winning!) director (emphasis mine):
“John le Carré’s ‘The Night Manager’ is a relentlessly exhilarating thriller with profound emotional depths. Its narrative is carried by two secretive, alluring protagonists, Roper and Pine. David Farr’s elegant script perfectly orchestrates the central cat-and-mouse game between these two irresistibly flawed characters. That Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston will be playing Roper and Pine, respectively, is so thrilling to me.
***Their shared soulfulness, precision and sharp humor will seduce us all, both through Roper’s charming yet insidious manipulations and Pine’s unsettlingly enigmatic struggle to do the right thing. ***
It is a great honor to be directing ‘The Night Manager’ and to be part of the collaboration between AMC, BBC1, The Ink Factory and Stephen Garrett. I could not be more excited.”

    • 'P'enny says:

I’m hoping the gushing will calm down as he gets older, at the moment it’s an English kiss-off between all the toffy actors who have the biggest vocab & abilities to string sentences worthy of Charles dickens. 😝

    • icerose says:

I love the precision in his use of language it is so rare these days and his ability to use it without sounding pretentious. So much language today is sound bites which when you analyse them tell you nothing. He just needs to learn the art of paraphrasing without loosing the content.
And his enthusiasm is refreshing after all the Oscar posing and positioning that has been going on. It is like a sip of Grand Marnier. A zippy taste of orange with a bit of a kick and the feeling of excellence that strands the test of time.

      • Grace says:

Yes, precision use of language and paraphrasing without losing the content, two things I absolutely agree, he has a rare gift in those.

      • M.A.F. says:

I don’t mind the SAT words (it is refreshing) but he needs to learn the art of the sound bite.

      • Grace says:

        What’s SAT words?

      • M.A.F. says:

@Grace- it is short for Scholastic Aptitude Test. One of two tests required for high school seniors to take to get into college. The vocab words they want to study are usually in the 3 syllable variety (i.e. words you will never use after the test).

      • Grace says:

@M.A.F, thanks of the clarification. Kind of reminds me of all those GMAT, GRE, IELTs glossaries – I suppose they are similar things. 🙂

    • Sixer says:

@Totally – I’m only messing; you don’t have to go around protesting too much. In fact, it’s likely to make me mess more, not less: I just can’t help myself.

@Lilac – tweetless is a synonym of fanbaitless but sounds betterererererer.

@Penny – you lie like cheap Japanese watch (I can’t remember where that comes from, but it’s funny, right?) I reckon Englisher vocab kiss-offs are your secret guilty pleasure. Amirite?

@icerose. Ha. I have nothing at all to say to your purple prose. You win and I still love you.

      • 'P'enny says:

@sixer lmao 😳😜 Seiko do brilliant time keeping devices. Yep ok guilty pleasures – I do admit. But I’m hankering for a bit rough right now 😝

      • Sixer says:

Meh. I just googled it (just for you) but the origin doesn’t seem to show up easily. I want to know where it started now!

      • icerose says:

@Sixer Dragonflies need a little snark now and then. It allows them to sharpen their talons in preparation for his Oscar nomination when we will all feel the blow of hot air which accompanies the PR trail.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Oh, Sixer–you misunderstand! I rather agreed with you on this one! I was jokingly wondering if she’d been infected by the same thesaurus. ‘Cause comparing the two of them with Hugh’s concise yet elegant response does rather highlight the verbosity. I adore Tom, obvs, even when he does go on so–but I’m not blind to the good a bit of editing would do him on occasion!

      • Lilacflowers says:

        “tweetless” sounds much more betterer.

      • Sixer says:

@Totally – sorry, apologies, desole, all that! I think I’ve been prejudiced by all the defensiveness on Benny the Affianced threads of late. And I concur – Hugh’s response has the added extra appeal of “no sick bucket required”. Aww. I was SO trying not to be mean about the Puddletom and I’ve just gone and done it. Bugger. I’ll never get to heaven.

      • TotallyBiased says:

@Sixer Oh, not gonna lie–gushing verbosity is a turn on for me, though I understand it makes others reach for the ball-gags (oops! Now *I’m* not going to heaven.) But the contrast between Hugh Laurie’s comment and the other two’s press releases just made me giggle and put the lock back on my OED.

    • MtnRunner says:

That was such a “nice” post, Sixer. Has his absence made your heart grow fonder?

I prefer Tweetless Tom as well. Loquacious Loki is better with video to enjoy his voice and expressions.

      • Sixer says:

I’m afraid it’s as “nice” (snigger) as I get. But I do aim to please.

      • MtnRunner says:

Don’t change, Sixer. You please even when I don’t totally co-sign since I’m not as well educated so his blowing smoke to you sounds intelligent to a dumbass like me. 🙂

Ok, slight change in topic, I’ve been watching DTO (Private Lives & Ghosts) and wondering if I should do All My Sons, Long Day’s Journey or Doll’s House. Any thoughts from those across the pond?? I wasn’t in the mood for Tennant’s Much Ado today, but have it in the queue.

    • jammypants says:

His novel sized release statement was adorable. Never change Tommy. I too love his tweetless streak. The crazies keep trying but maybe they’ll give up one day.

      • **sighs** says:

I laughed when I read it. He’s very consistent, isn’t he? I also liked. Hugh Laurie’s which basically just said he’s excited and it’ll be good if they don’t mess it up. Ha.

      • jammypants says:

He is very consistent. I love that about him. He’s right when he said in a past interview. Being truthful to oneself. He’s stuck to his guns and it’ll continue to bring him success. I can’t wait to see Hugh Laurie play a roguish, charming, debonair baddie. His role will be delicious. Pine is also a very interesting character. I love his determination. A lot of crap happens to him but he never feels sorry for himself. He feels sorry for those who got in the way. He’s also a bit of a cheeky bastard.

  8. Ingrid says:

Aaah… smiling Tom Hiddleston – a breath of fresh air after the PissyBatch threads.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Can we just leave that over there somewhere so we can enjoy the sunshine and warmth? It’s frigidly cold here and we don’t need any dour faces.

    • icerose says:

@Ingrid it flashed across my mind as well but a tom post is so rare these days that any mention of a certain Oscar nominated but contractively challenged man might spoil the positivity he so easily generates,

  9. Lilacflowers says:

Really curious as to who will play Sophie in The Night Manager, even more so than who will play Jed. Sophie is described as in her 40s and Egyptian.

    • Bea says:

I think Bérénice Marlohe would be amazing, absolutely gorgeous. She’s not quite 40 though.

      • icerose says:

Well if they are bold and it works within the story age should not be a consideration. Tom works well with older women

    • icerose says:

I really love Sophie Okonedo who will be in Richard 111 and I think she would make a great love interest,

    • jammypants says:

The actress who played Oberyn Martell’s paramour, Ellaria Sand. I pictured her the entire time I red the books.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Indira Varma! I loved her in Rome. She is a stunningly beautiful woman.

      • jammypants says:

I would be very happy with her playing Sophie.

      • icerose says:

@Lilacflower Indira would work for me. I saw her in a Pinter’s Hot House with Simon R Beal and John Simms and she really pushed out her sex appeal in away I had never seen Her do it before ,I also admire her strength and honesty as a person

  10. koko says:

That statement is so Tom. This man needs to write, scripts, books, something…he has the words and thoughts and he needs to jot them down. I agree with @Sixer, I could care less if he ever tweets again. But I don’t think it was all PR in the beginning, I think he enjoys the interaction and the sharing, he seems very people friendly. I think it’s just gone a bit to far.

    • icerose says:

I use to enjoy his tweets they were more interesting than a lot of the crap around.

      • koko says:

I agree. It might have been a little to personal but I admit to enjoying them, but that “Tweeting Tom” is history. I don’t see him deleting it, it will be useful when the movies break but it will never be what it was.

  11. Grace says:

    Hooooooray, Hiddles thread!

Dear Tom, I hope you’ve had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. I thoroughly enjoyed OLLA in 2014, and look forward to your different projects coming up in 2015 and 2016.

  12. Dancinnancy says:

I adore Tom, but I’ve been grateful for the Hiddles break. 1) to nurse my broken heart for missing him in Nashville not once but twice and 2) when I finally connected that he was singing bear neccessities and velociraptor impressions because there were Jungle Book and Jurrasic Park parts to be won.

    • Grace says:

The man has been singing Bare Necessities for years. It’s probably his go-to song. And velociraptor impressions he was asked to do. While it might be true, there is no need to connect every nice deed with ulterior motive.

    • InvaderTak says:

Those things seem to be unrelated to anything other than his own interests. He talked about the Jungle Book way before the remake was announced. He didn’t start doing a King Kong impressions or going on about country music when he was up for parts realted to them. Not sure why those things were attributed to pandering for roles on his part.

    • lunchcoma says:

The velociraptor impression was from 2 1/2 years ago. I doubt he was aware there were Jurassic parts to be won in the future back in 2012. He obviously likes attention, but I don’t think he’s quite that scheming.

      • Lilacflowers says:

He actually started doing the velociraptor bit while at RADA as some acting exercise but unveiled in in full glory at the Nerdist thing at SDCC in 2012 when somebody asked about it.

      • lunchcoma says:

Oh, that makes sense, Lilacflowers, given how he was able to do it so quickly upon request. It also makes sense they’d use Jurassic Park as a reference in drama school. I’m about the same age as he is and it’s a movie that’s very familiar to me from my childhood, so it makes sense it was an easy reference for his class as well. The fact that the world is full of 30-somethings who remember the movie is probably the reason they’re doing a reboot.

    • icerose says:

I think he was singing them because he loves the films because both of those connections came up in interviews way before there was any talk of remakes. The velociraptor impression was brought up at an interview way back when he was involved with in War Horse because when he touring with Cymbeline in Europe he was known for his velociraptor impression. I think someone has a clip of him doing it back then outside a hotel door. He was then asked to do it at the Thor 11 comic con interview.
So do not always believe it when people jump to conclusions over connections.

      • Dancinnancy says:

It was simply my opinion. The timing just seemed too convenient for me.

      • jammypants says:

He gets asked to do these things during Q&A so hardly convenient.

      • MtnRunner says:

And someone (Ladyslippers, I think) pointed out here that when he was singing MJ and dancing in Korea (?) and doing the Korean SNL skit that while it seems totally over the top to Westerners, it’s just the kind of campy humor that Asians enjoy. He was simply playing to his audience and giving them what they wanted.

Kudos to him for being willing to look silly to give his fans their happies.

      • Josa says:

He once said when he auditioned for RADA, he’s required to sing and he sang Bare Necessities. That’s like, 2001.
I don’t know when they are shooting Jungle Book, but he’s been working non-stop since end of 2013. Don’t think he has any time on his schedule to do Jungle Book without skipping one of his current projects. He probably much rather be the lead character of High-Rise, ISTL, TNM or Skull Island, then voicing one of the character in an animation. I know I much prefer to see his gorgeous face and body in a movie then just hearing his voice.

      • Grace says:

Oh yes, @mtnrunner, his dancing and singing actually were rather tame by south-east Asian entertainment show standards.

      • MtnRunner says:

Well they gave him hell for it here! I love the fact that I get a cross-cultural education on this site. I’ve learned more about the UK and Asia cultural differences here than anywhere else, fo sho.

Grace, are you the “Gracie” that was posting here on TH previously? The one that’s giving little gifts to Elles that she’s kindly passed on to me?

      • Grace says:

@mtnrunner, yes this is Gracie *wave* – I started out as Grace, then it stopped working so I switched to Gracie, now back to Grace because Gracie stopped working – lol, what a wormhole!

I am very happy to share my reserve. After all, elles is the one put in the hard work to organise a cloud space so that all of us can visit – the power of crowd sourcing. Let’s have a round of applause for elles. 🙂

      • MtnRunner says:

        *waves to Grace and claps*

      • Lilacflowers says:

I don’t know why there is this continual buzz about why he isn’t in either of The Jungle Book adaptations. The man said he loved the Disney cartoon version; that he considered it “perfect.” These adaptations are not the same movie. Very often when somebody considers something “perfect”, they usually don’t want a re-make. He never said he wanted to be in either of them and if he did, Disney would have found something for him to do in the Disney live action version.

      • jammypants says:

@Lilac, it’s just projection, or the journalists put this type of logic together for more fangirl bait clicks.

  13. lunchcoma says:

Oh, he’s totally a company man. I don’t think he’s being insincere, though. He doesn’t usually get to play a hero with A Past and a couple of love interests in something that’s not a period piece, so it probably will be fun for him, and it’s certainly his style to get way too excited about everything.

    • 'P'enny says:

This is the chance to show big audience out if period garb, even skull island may be a period piece if it is going pre-1930. Just want his curls back 😂 looking rougher again . I love his scruff❤️

      • lunchcoma says:

That’s a good point about the audience size as well. There are a lot of people who will tune into a new AMC show about spies and arms dealers who aren’t necessarily paying attention to every independent film, so for a decent number of Americans, this will be the first time they see him as anyone other than Loki. Makes sense he’s enthused. I imagine he’ll start out this role being relatively polished and get a bit scruffier as the plot goes on.

      • jammypants says:

I think he might also be enthused because the character himself is really interesting and complex. That’s a role an actor can bite into.

      • icerose says:

I think he might be enthused because according to book reviews I read there is a touch of James Bond in it.

      • MtnRunner says:

Every project coming out in the next year (AoU excepted) is going to expand his audience base here in the US beyond Loki.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@lunchcoma, and there are people who will watch a show on AMC who have never seen a Marvel comic book movie because they don’t do comic book movies, so they won’t know who Loki is.

      • lunchcoma says:

That’s true as well, Lilacflowers. Just as an example, I suspect my father will be interested in The Night Manager, as he’s read most of le Carre’s books, and he hasn’t seen any of the Marvel movies. The audience for quality cable TV is quite different from that for movies.

I can see the Bond element of it having some appeal, icerose. I suspect the fact that this is a more melancholy take on a spy thriller might be interesting to him as well. It’s the kind of part that could be really deep, assuming the script is good.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@lunchcoma, my boyfriend is excited about The Night Manager. He’s a big LeCarre fan and TNM is his favorite LeCarre. He doesn’t like Hugh Laurie and he hasn’t formed an opinion on Tom but he can’t wait for this mini-series.

  14. jammypants says:

I just hope they improve the female characters. I really hated how they were written. There are 4 of them.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      Sophie
      Jeds
      The woman in Canada
The woman in the village and her daughter, who just positions herself on his doorstep.

      • jammypants says:

I hope they include, ehem, some very important scenes with the Canadian one 😉

      • Josa says:

@jammypants. Me too. Me too. Full of actions is how I remembered that part.

      • jammypants says:

I wonder how strict AMC is with nudity. I need to know for reasons.

      • 'P'enny says:

        @jimmypants

I’ll email AMC and tell them BBC demand nudity at least a balcony towel dropping, naked sunbathing scene for both Hugh and Tom. Not prejudiced either way.

      • jammypants says:

There are a couple of nude scenes in the book, such as when he was in Canada. He was pretty naked all over Canada.

  15. aquarius64 says:

Varied projects are fine, but Hiddleston still has to prove he can put butts in the seats of a multiplex outside of a Marvel movie. Unfortunately that’s all that really counts in Hollywood – if an actor or actress can open a movie at #1 at the box office and if that movie makes a ton of loot. The acid test for Hiddleston is the Kong movie, even Crimson Peak or the Hank Williams biopic, otherwise he will be tagged as a one-hit wonder who can only bring in devout fans. Moneywise, that’s not cool.

    • jammypants says:

Am I the only person who doesn’t care if he puts butts in cinemas? I like him as an actor and a public figure, but even Tom Cruise can’t fill multiplexes anymore, let alone a less known actor. If the movie is good, that is what warms seats, as proven by Guardians of the Galaxy (a more obscure Marvel property with less known actors).

      • icerose says:

I do not care either. It is the quality of the work I go for and so far I have been impressed.
Until Tom did Marvel you could not get me into the cinema to watch a Marvel film. I just look for the best in films/TV and theatre.

    • 'P'enny says:

I don’t care about multiplex bums on seats – the best stuff worth watching in regards to quality drama is television. Give me mini- series any day. Cinema is great for big visual pieces but it’s more than the actor alone that gets bums on seats eg jonnny depps last 4 died 😕 at box office.

    • lunchcoma says:

Some other fans might throw things at me for saying this, but Hiddleston is mostly a character actor. I don’t think he’ll ever plug into the Tom Cruise role where he’ll be able to carry a big, dumb action movie unless it’s tied to an existing IP. I think that’s fine, though, because there aren’t a lot of movies like that being made these days. It doesn’t mean Hiddleston can’t play the lead if it’s a character piece or something high concept like Skull Island, and it will probably make for a more steady career as he gets a bit older.

      • icerose says:

I do not particularly think being a lead is that important especially if the lead crappy part. I think he has the potential to follow in Daniel Day Lewis’s footsteps and most of his lead roles have not nee typical leads.

      • lunchcoma says:

I think a lot of actors want to have the ability to be considered for lead roles, as some of those are very interesting, but that the wise ones with an eye toward having long careers also keep an eye toward great supporting parts. I suspect Hiddleston is probably trying to establish that he can be the lead right now, since he’s primarily famous for ensemble pieces where he’s an antagonist, and I think once he’s had some movies where he’s shown that he works in that role we’ll see some interesting work in supporting roles as good ones come along.

      • TotallyBiased says:

        @lunchcoma
It’s interesting to me how movie-going is changing. Tom Cruise can’t carry the big, dumb action movie anymore–even when it turns out to be a not-so-dumb possible hidden gem of a movie. Witness Edge of Tomorrow.
And I have wondered if Tom is more ambitious to be a ‘star’ or a noted actor (the latter most often being, really, high-end character actors in my book.) Because Loki knows, he’s ambitious for something! Then I consider his role choices for 2014/15 and hope that is answering my own question.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Lunchcoma, Can I throw roses at you? I agree with you.

      • jammypants says:

Edge of Tomorrow was a good movie. Even Cruise surprised me. I will give Cruise credit. He doesn’t have much range, but he’s good with what he’s got. When he played Lestat, I was pleasantly surprised, however.

      • aquarius64 says:

My point is – it doesn’t matter if die hard fans will see everything Hiddleston’s in, as far as a movie studio is concerned. If there’s not enough of his fans coming in paying money, but not making big profits, Hiddleston could be considered unemployable for non-Marvel blockbusters as a lead. Skull Island is a popcorn movie, he’ll really have to prove it there. The actor or actress as the lead is the marketing hook for a movie. @Totallybiased – I think Hiddleston wants to be a star otherwise he wouldn’t have signed on to Thor or the Kong movie. Flicks like those act as springboards.

      • lunchcoma says:

I’ll happily bask in the roses, Lilacflowers.

Hiddleston signed onto Thor because it was the first part offered to him that promised significant exposure as well. I don’t know whether or not he wants to be the kind of guy who headlines a lot of popcorn movies, but I don’t think he will end up doing all that much of that and think there will be plenty of other options for him to be successful if he doesn’t. I think he may want a career more like Fassbender’s that balances prestige pictures with mainstream roles. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d like awards nominations. As for Skull Island, I don’t think it’s as much of a test as you paint it as being. Like Marvel movies, it’s an established IP, and it’s a prequel to a successful movie. Unless the movie is very bad, I suspect it will be profitable. I don’t think those profits will be attributed all that much to Hiddleston.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@aquarius, yes, Skull Island is a popcorn movie but it is a popcorn movie with King Kong. I know people who are excited about this film who don’t know who Tom is. They will be there for Kong. Kong has an international built-in audience.

      • jammypants says:

I’ll be honest. I don’t like all of Fassbender’s films. Prometheus, Frank, The Counselor, Jonah Hex, A Dangerous Method. They’re terrible critically and/or at the box office. I love Fassbender. He’s one of my fav new generation actors, but I don’t think he has the greatest track record like some people think. He’s only done films but no tv or theatre. In my personal opinion, I think Cumberbatch and Hiddleston are/will have more satisfying careers. This may very well be an unpopular opinion.

Also, none of use will ever truly know how much Hiddleston contributes to the success of his films unless every audience member is asked to fill out a survey after the movie. I actually think it’s a bit unfair to say he’s not in some way responsible for the success of the Thor films or even The Avengers. I went into TA not a fan at all. But I walked out converted. I’m not alone in this. The three subsequent times I went for him.

TA is an event film. It would always be guaranteed to do well because superheroes teaming up was a novelty at the time. But, it’s also fair to say Tom was one of the reasons it did well.

      • icerose says:

@lunchcoma I do agree with you that Tom will vary his roles both in terms of diverse characters, ensemble casts and leads and theatre. I think his ambition is to widen his skills and pulling power to allow him to pick and choose the roles that will bring him critical praise. And I am sure that he is not adverse to an award or two along the way, His ambition is for excellence and recognition of his abilities,

@MtnRunner I think have recognised that Tom has pulling power hence the additional scenes in Thor and setting him up for a major contribution in Phase 3. And I do think he has been chasing RDJ’S coat tails but he is wise enough ght to know that RDJ came to Marvel with an established career of good work and in the USA he is still an unknown quantity,

    • MtnRunner says:

Am I the only one who thinks that Tom drew more fans to Thor TDW than Chris? I’d say that as far as Marvel is concerned, Tom puts butts in seats. My impression is that he’s second to RDJ in popularity in that Universe.

      • 'P'enny says:

i with you on that one!

It will be interesting to see how big his part is going to be in Thor 3, as far as the critics were concerned Tom’s acting saved Thor 2. And, but, i will say, Tom and Chris together, also saved the film from being a bore.

      • lunchcoma says:

I tend to look at Marvel movies as being their own draws. I don’t think that many people came to The Dark World for either Hemsworth or Hiddleston. The draw was Marvel itself.

RDJ is the only actor in Marvel who I think people really come to the theater for specifically. In terms of general industry power, he’s certainly a head and shoulder above the others. Following the success of Lucy, I’d actually guess that Scarlett Johansson is second, though I don’t think people go to Marvel movies specifically to see her.

      • MtnRunner says:

P’enny, I thought I read somewhere that they expanded Loki’s role in Thor 2 because of his immense popularity after the first Thor movie. I’d expect Loki to be central to the new Thor since he’s the only one that makes that whole family interesting. They can cut all the human parts out while they’re at it.

God bless whoever it was that made the Loki: Brother of Thor movie. That’s all I need for a Loki fix.

      • Grace says:

On cutting the human parts, agreed. Who cares what happens on earth? I wanna know more about Asgard and the other realms.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@MtnRunner, my college roommate and I go to the Thor films together. She goes for Chris H, I go for Tom and we consider Idris a bonus for both of us.

      • icerose says:

@Launchcoma it depends -I know lot’s of people like me who do not go to every comic book/Marvel film but may watch on of it has an actor they like in it,

      • MtnRunner says:

I watched Avengers because of RDJ. I watched Thor 1 & 2 for Tom. I assumed I wasn’t the only one that watches a Marvel film for a particular character.

    • Lilacflowers says:

That is true of all actors but, unlike American actors, trained British actors tend to move back and forth between stage and film roles and television roles so it never seems to be that big of an issue, unless they strictly want to be a Hollywood leading man and not just a good actor.

    • Josa says:

@aquarius64. True to a certain extent, but very few actors these days can manage that. Fassbender and Hardy haven’t done that, and that doesn’t hurt them in any way. They are still very hot on everyone’s casting list, that 2 combined have like 15 movies coming out in the next 2 years. That’s what Tom should care. He wants to be offered quality roles that he wants to play. To be a known name to the general audience is a good thing for getting attention of casting directors, but to be known as a good actor with range is good for his chance to good directors. He’ll never be Tom Cruise, just don’t think nowadays actors want to be Tom Cruise anymore.

  16. Frosty says:

Tom and Tilda Swinton were sooo sexy in Only Lovers Left Alive. /swoon

  17. jammypants says:

I actually like the dancing circus bear. Maybe I’m the only one. However, he doesn’t have to sing…ever. That can go away.

    • icerose says:

I like his singing -it is not epic but half the time he does not take it seriously. Also delivery is very much apart of singing and I think ISTL might surprise us,

      • jammypants says:

I look forward to his ISTL singing.

      • 'P'enny says:

Hank Williams couldn’t sing either, :-p

But, i can;t wait for this film now, I just think he will be very watchable in it and the story in itself is an interesting one.

    • Grace says:

@icerose, doesn’t take it seriously is what makes it charming. 🙂

@jammypants, you’re not the only one who likes dancing circus bear. Why not? Especially in promotion and press junks. How many times can someone tweak their answers for the same questions? At least the singing and dancing break things up a little bit.

I am excited for ISTL. It’s different to everything he’s done so far and he worked so damn hard for it. Not super up-to-date with the release dates. Can someone tell me when that’s coming out please?

      • Lilacflowers says:

        No release date yet.

      • Grace says:

        Thanks, Lilacflowers.

      • lunchcoma says:

If you want some pure guesswork on I Saw the Light, I would suspect it would premiere at one of the at one of the festivals between May and September, and that the release date will depend on how it’s received there and who buys it. This isn’t a studio film, so it will need to pick up a distributor.

      • MtnRunner says:

The last thing I saw was it was slated for late 2015.

  18. ellesbelles says:

As if a tom thread would open and I wouldn’t show up (thanks Gracie!)

I try to limit time online on the weekends so I may have been even later to the party.

Personally I squeed when I saw the announcement on tumblr. For tom, natch, but I also love hugh Laurie, back to when he was in sense and sensibility. I’ll have to be sure to go follow bbcone on instagram!

  19. Freshmeat says:

I think that Tom and say Michael Fassbender have had the best of both worlds. They know what is like to be apart of a big Hollywood machine, which means playing the game. But also are able to step away and do fantastic “not pandering to the masses” work.
I think many a working actor would wish to have that kind balance. You know, mostly maintain their integrity, keep their fans and themselves happy and keep the personal stuff in proper perspective. These are the things that make them good in my books. That’s who I pay to see.
I really hope Tom doesn’t get fully “Anne Hathaway’d” and publicly have to remove himself because people are so sick of him. But I looks like he’s taking some early precautions.

  20. vauvert says:

Oh how we missed him:-) Really needing that sunny smile and a good dose of enthusiastic, coherent verbiage. Honestly I get grumpy when people criticize him for “shilling”. I never get the feeling with him that it is an act, he comes across as genuine, happy to be where he is, and appreciating the privilege, fame and opportunities. In fact, back when I was hiring people, one of the things I looked for beyond competence for the job was attitude. If you just show up to get your salary and leave as fast as you can at the end of the day, I don’t want you on my team. (Not talking about personal difficulties, illness, etc. just the day to day attitude. No one is forcing you to be here, so please only come if you will enjoy it.)
I just much prefer someone like him – who seems to enjoy the work, and make no mistake promoting the movie and your studio and director is part and parcel of said work – than grumpy cats who act like they are too good for it.
I dont do much twitter so radio silence does not bother me much, but it would be nice to see him around more! And there is a good way to interject personal details in interviews and promotion without going into actually intimate stuff that he should just keep private. I think he will do fine with that. Heck, just do exactly the opposite of what the nameless otter did…

  21. Kiki says:

I for one, am very glad to see, sweet face Tom Hiddleston. I am so madly in love with Tom. And I am also glad he kept his private life, private.

I have the hugest crush on Tom Hiddleston.

  22. TotallyBiased says:

Is it a sign of how Hiddles-deprived I’ve been, that the hoodie-cowboy boots combo is starting to look really hot to me right now?
    @elles, pass the Jameson’s, girlfriend–I need a toast. And a distraction.
    😉

    • Grace says:

Distraction from drooling over hoodie-cowboy boots combo? LOL. Personally I love the hoodie and the cowboys boots. The pale, long neck and chest hair don’t hurt too. 😉

    • MtnRunner says:

No hoodie. I want him in that red plaid shirt and cowboy boots. I like Hillbilly Hiddles as much as Tuxedo Tom.

    • icerose says:

and I am starting to rerun Coriolanus and OLLA which I have watched infinitum

  23. Camille (The Original) says:

He pings my ‘gaydar’ and I don’t understand his appeal at all (nothing to do with whatever his sexuality is, I just find him massively over rated).

    • jammypants says:

      more for me then =D

    • MtnRunner says:

Camille, I can see how his piddling puppy dog excitement might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but as an actor, I don’t think he’s overrated. He’s got a fine set of acting chops, better than some of the other Brits that get featured here imo.

  24. pixie-stix says:

That sweet face, at last. ♥
I look forward to seeing a budding bromance between Tom and Hugh on Instagram. Might add, those two cut-ups breaking into song, Fugue for Tinhorns or The Oldest Established from Guys and Dolls.
Susanne Bier directed Things We Lost in the Fire with Benicio del Toro and After the Wedding with Mads Mikkelsen – I like both those movies. It will be interesting how she approaches The Night Manager. I was kind of hoping it would be ready for AMC’s fall line-up (since Mad Men will be a teary memory), but that could be pushing it.
Don’t know if there will be any dancing bear this year, but he’ll be at Comic Con and whatever he does will probably blow the doors off Hall H.

    • TotallyBiased says:

@pixie-stix Thanks for the info re Susanne Bier; I was too lazy to google and knew she sounded familiar. I’m really hoping Hugh takes to Tom–he’s a very talented musician, and to be honest things could go either way if they aren’t already acquainted/established with each other. But Tom has that work ethic and immense desire to charm going for him, so there’s that.
Agree that Hall H is really going to be something! I will, once again, observe from afar via Twitter and other social media.
ALSO agree that it’s a shame about the long wait for this! Told my mother (a HUGE HL fan) about the confirmation, and the first thing she asked was “when will it air?”
She didn’t much like my answer, I can tell you! 🙂

I think he will be more subdued at Comic Con this year, than 2013 Loki gig, but in 2016 with Skull Island there should be a bigger buzz for him than perhaps Crimson Peak for this year. Especially if he is on stage with Keaton and Simmonds. However, as for Marvel will be all about Dr Strange/Black Panther/Captain Marvel for the 2016 releases and Thor3/Avengers etc will probably be on the back burner. It wont really need the marketing push. Marvel will be pushing the new characters.

I expect Tom to be giving his all for Legendary now. Time for Tom to work his Marvel exit strategy. And, the same for all the Chris’s and RDJ etc.

Yes, the undisputed God of Hall H, King of Comic-Con will return in July.

Just as a little update to my fellow ladies that use the cloud. There have been some issues with downloading the larger movie files, getting 404 errors and what not. If you are having these issues, give me a holler and we can perhaps coordinate doing a drop box transfer. Gracie was kind enough to share Deep Blue Sea, War Horse, OLLA, and Midnight in Paris and I’ve converted them to MP4 and .wmv

I think I’m going to put them on a separate cloud (and link of course) just because the files are so large.

Anywho, looks like 2015 will be a year of lots of new clips and sound bites!

    • Gracie says:

Elles, daring, you might wanna create copies, see if those’re downloadable for people in the meantime. That’s how we got around the 404 error. Though I am not sure it works with downloading too, it’s worth a try.

      • ellesbelles says:

Still figuring out logistics Gracie but I think you’re right. Ive sent the files via drop box lately and it’s seeming to work much better!

I have an image in my head of Hugh as the older grouchier dog and Hiddles as the little puppy who keeps trying to get him to play.

Is it my imagination or is Hugh Grant also in this? Pine’s contact agent?

    • Josa says:

Only 2 casts have been announced so far, Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston. Hugh Grant as his handler? Not at all who I imagine Burr will be. I was hoping they cast Brendon Gleeson. But maybe you have some insider news we haven’t get wind of yet.

Okay, found on page eight! Glad this is still open. 😀

Possible news re: Skull Island, there’s an article from MLive (Michigan) with MTV red carpet interview attached w/JK Simmons that production will be in Detroit. (Michael Keaton was interviewed as well). So it might be Tom’s heading back to Detroit this summer. JK Simmons is excited to get a chance to see the Tigers play…maybe they’ll get Tom to throw the first baseball as he did a few years ago (can’t remember where though).

I’m getting excited for this project.

I’ll plan my trip home to in-laws around this. Hopefully my home town will look better here than it did in OLLA.

He threw out a first pitch for the Cleveland Indians when The Avengers was filming there.
I can definitely see him and JK off at the ballgames!
