Naya Rivera apologizes for her ‘joke’ about ‘ethnics’ & their showering habits

On Tuesday, Naya Rivera was a guest host on The View, and it did not go well. Naya and the ladies were talking about showering and how often one should clean oneself, and Naya brilliantly observed that “I think that white people shower a lot more than ethnics.” Some people thought Naya’s white-versus-“ethnics” showering debate was racist, some just thought it was stupid. One thing is for sure, I bet she really regretted saying it. Naya was back on The View yesterday and she decided to clarify her previous statements. And by “clarify” I mean “she’s now claiming it was all a joke.”

Who knew showering was such a hot-button topic? After inciting controversy on Tuesday, Jan. 13, with her remark that showering daily is “such a white people thing,” Naya Rivera attempted to wash away some of her bad karma with an apology. The Glee star, 28, returned to the scene of the crime — The View — as a guest host on Wednesday, Jan. 14, and offered a mea culpa to viewers who took offense to her previous comments.

“Showering. Biggest topic in pop culture today, in my opinion. Thanks to me, unfortunately,” she quipped during the show’s Hot Topics segment. “Yesterday, we were talking about a study that says you’re supposed to shower once or twice every three days. I had an opinion on it that was supposed to be a joke. Apparently it didn’t go over so well.”

Rivera claimed on Wednesday that she was kidding at the time, saying, “It was supposed to be a joke, but I apologize if anyone was offended.” She went on to quote some of the tweets she’d received, including one from user @retiredfilth that said, “Now white people gonna think we don’t shower cuz of Naya Rivera.”

The View co-host Nicolle Wallace, for one, said the actress deserved a break. “Back off of Naya,” Wallace told viewers. “She’s very clean.”

Fellow co-host Rosie O’Donnell piped in, too, saying she’d read something about how “doctors say that you should take a bath” anyway. “Thank you, that’s what I do,” she quipped. Guest host Samantha Ponder was appalled. “No. A bath? You sit in your own filth when you take a bath!” she protested, prompting Wallace to joke, “Oh my god, you’re gonna be in trouble now, too!”

[From Us Weekly]

Sigh… she wasn’t “joking.” She might have said it as observational humor, but she was honestly giving her opinion. In her opinion, showering every day is a white person thing. Now, all that being said, I can’t believe people got so worked up about what Naya Rivera has to say about anything. So, is this over? Can we stop generalizing about racialized grooming?

    Wow, she’s dumb.

  2. Jules says:

She should apologize for that jacked up face. Now excuse me while I go shower.

  3. silken_floss says:

Someone staple her mouth shut, please -___-

  4. Loopy says:

It wasn’t a joke and now everyone knows she is a dirty smelly little miss.

  5. Edwin says:

This is why u leave the jokes to comedians, she used the platform like the View to make a moronic statement and can someone please explain who are the Ethincs. I have never heard of anyone waiting two or three days to shower.

    • Jules says:

Well, then you haven’t worked with me. I had a ‘boss’ like that for 10 years. She was and still is a pig.

  6. MrsBPitt says:

I don’t get that “taking a bath, is sitting in your own filth” business…probably because, I never take a bath to wash…when I take a bath, its to relax and de-stress….I do take a shower every day to get clean…and I just realised, now I’m talking about my cleansing habits.. Oh wow….Yes, lets make this inane topic go away!!!!

    • Kitten says:

Exactly. I’m not a much of a bath-taker (I have trouble doing nothing for more than 5 minutes) but the few times that I have it was to relax, not necessarily to clean myself. I always ended up showering after anyway.

I feel like people who say a bath is “sitting in your own filth” really don’t understand the concept of bathing.

      • wolfpup says:

Bathing is a good way to soak off dead skin cells, especially with a loofah, oils and fragrance. Who can knock a bath, which is able to cleanse a woman in a more complete way than a shower might, because IMO, how does one get the water thoroughly between the legs, without extreme contortions, which still cannot do the job of getting it really clean, down there? Sometimes I rinse, other times I just end up soft, fragrant, and relaxed. Sometimes I include a sip of wine, enchanting music, and candles… However, I don’t share my tub with anyone, and scrub it, for the next time on my way out of it. My tub, so clean and white for me.

      • Erinn says:

That’s my problem too, Kitten. I can’t handle just sitting in water and doing nothing. And when I do have a bath, I do a rinse off shower.

I did actually make some lush-style bath bombs and I haven’t tried any out yet. They smell amazing. And everyone who I’ve given them to said they were fantastic and fizzy. Husband loves them (he’s a bath lover but refuses to spend money on bathbombs as some weird man-oath he’s made up).

We’re supposed to be buying a new tub that he’s claimed he can totally install. I don’t doubt his plumbing hook-up abilities. But I worry about his ability to attach everything properly with the adhesive crap you use to do it. Once we do that, I might be more inclined to give baths a shot.

    • OriginalTessa says:

I just don’t understand who lets themselves get that dang filthy! If 30 gallons of hot water and soap is a soup of filth after you’ve soaked in it, what the heck are you doing? Why are you so dirty?

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Lol, that’s what I say. I usually shower in the morning after I work out and take a bath if I want to unwind at night. I’m not that dirty from 8 or 9 hours.

    • maeliz says:

After I take a bubble bath, I rinse off under the shower to get the bubbles all off. I’m not dirty sitting in the tub because I not dirty getting into it

  7. Cerridwen says:

    What an idiot

  8. Bichon says:

I’m white, and I think she was correct. We do bathe too much.

    • wolfpup says:

I believe that our bodies are different when it comes to toxins, and some people need to freshen up more often than others; but how ridiculous to turn that subject into a racial idea.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Right. I didn’t object to the part where we bathe too much, but to the idea that all white people bathe more than all non-white people. That’s just dumb.

  9. GrnMtGirl says:

“I apologize to anyone who was offended,” rather than “I apologize if anyone was offended.”

Why is that so hard to say?

  10. Merritt says:

She’s an idiot. What she said was offensive, she was playing into the stereotype that only white people are truly clean.

    • Momoftwo says:

Am I the only one that thinks what she said wasn’t that bad? I think it’s true that in most other countries people don’t shower/wash there hair as often. My mom always tells me how she only washed her hair once a week growing up in India.

Not that white people are cleaner and therefore “better”. More that Americans (of all backgrounds) tend to be a little more soap/sanitizer obsessed

      • ozmom says:

Exactly, I think it’s more an observation than anything else. Not sure why people on this site seek out racist comments where they don’t exist. It’s tiresome.

    • wolfpup says:

IMO, there’s real truth in your perception, Merritt.

  11. kri says:

    Aaaand now go away, please.

  12. scout says:

    Hahahahha……stupidest now.

  13. Nonny says:

Step away from the surgeons office. If your aim was to look like a 45 yr old news anchor then, way to go. But otherwise….big mistake!

  14. Jacqueline says:

She is probably just saying that in a convoluted attempt to see how often Kimmy Cakes showers, so she can single white female that aspect of her as well

  15. Cinderella says:

On that happy note, I will probably not shower today.

  16. andypandy says:

Who are “ethnics? Everyone has an ethnic background including white people they can be Italian -American , Irish American Greek , Serb , Crotians etc
If this is some sort of code for non -white people it really is an improper use of the word and to me sounds quite stupid , I note Zoe Saldana tends to use this word in that way too …Stop

As for this Missys questionable hygiene habits please just speak for yourself,,OKi

  17. Erinn says:

@retiredfilth that said, “Now white people gonna think we don’t shower cuz of Naya Rivera.”

Are they though? I mean… it’s more an issue of stupidity than anything though. I read the comment and was like “okay, sure Naya.” and rolled my eyes and kept moving. Pretty much any super sweeping comment from anyone gets the side eye from me.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Right. Now white and non-white people are going to think you’re a moron. Because you are.

  18. maeliz says:

Does she really think people will believe she meant that as a joke?

  19. Fernanda says:

All I can say is that the girlfriend is morphing into Kim Kardashian.

  20. nina says:

I’m confused. Isn’t she ethnic? Is she saying that she doesn’t shower regularly? That’s very gross for a woman.

  21. LAK says:

Poor thing. She thought she was being clever and deep. Now that it’s backfired, it’s a joke.
