I know no one is too impressed by Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder, but I had to comment on their ridiculous thirst level. You’re looking at a People magazine tweet that points towards this story about Nikki’s engagement ring. The paparazzi just happened to get photos of Nikki and Ian kissing in Atlanta. The ring is conveniently placed next to the liplock. Perfect photo op. Then someone sent the photos to People as an exclusive.
The ring is ridiculously huge. Kaiser and I were chuckling over how it looks more like a cocktail bauble than an engagement ring. People says the ring is “very unique featuring what looks like a round center diamond surrounded by smaller round diamonds for an antique, floral-cluster vibe.” Nikki and Ian shopped hard for this bling. They were papped at several jewelry stores. Now they really want you to notice the fruits of their labor. Do I sound too suspicious? This is a couple who bought $1000 in adult toys in full view of the paparazzi. They love this attention, which neither of them draws on their own. I’m mystified by their game. What does this paparazzi influx do for either of their careers?
There’s more. This week’s issue of Life & Style has an insider story about Nikki and Ian’s “pre-wedding getaway.” Someone at Sundance heard Nikki at a swag booth where she was gifted a trip to Aruba: “She kept making sure the trip was for two, because she wanted a getaway with her future husband. She said they’d never been on vacation together, and this was a perfect first place to go!” #swag

I know a ring is personal preference, but I am not a fan of those thick halo styles that have become popular lately. It’s like the push up bra of diamond rings – often it’s not done well and only chosen so that the “rock” looks bigger to copy celebs.
Agreed. Not surprised by her famewhoring ways, but didn’t expect this from Somerhalder honestly.
Eh, makes you wonder how was calling the shots when he was with Nina Dobrev. I don’t recall seeing photos like these when they were together.
This. She’s a famewhore, but I didn’t know that he’s one too. Disgusting. It’s a horrible thing to say but I hope they break up – how stupid can one be to get engaged while getting a divorce? Their relatioship won’t last.

They played the game differently, but they certainly played it aggressively. They were an on screen couple, and thus had less need to pimp out their off screen relationship non-stop. They tended more towards Robsten-esque games of “keep ’em guessing”. They’d stage ridic photo ops like the one above, then act coy and refuse to admit they were dating because they were so “private”. I found it just as annoying as Nikki/Ian’s gamesmanship.

I actually don’t see how this is any different from the regular Joe Smoe’s paying someone to take photos of them down by the river, in the mountains, at the park, on a carousel to announce their engagements to the world. Plastering it all over their social media profiles.

Or ya know… maybe they , like many others, are just super happy and want to scream it to the world.
I have a couple of things to say about this.
1. I feel for Ian, it seems like he thought he would be a bigger deal by now. He is a good actor, gorgeous and reportedly, very nice in real life.. when he was with Nina he was never papped this much.
2. Wonder what Nina thinks.. They were together for like 4 years and now him and Nikki have been together for a total of 2 minutes and they are engaged.
3. Didn’t Nikki JUST divorced? Like, not even 90 days ago?
i don’t think nina wanted to get married though.
The word is that Nina turned down his proposals.
But if all celebrities make only reasonable, well thought over, sensible decisions we’ll be denied the opportunity to shake heads, roll eyes, say tcht tchs and amuse ourselves.
Eh. He and Nina were broken up for at least a year when he and Nikki got together. If Nina had wanted to get married they already would have been, but she’s significantly younger andprobably isn’t ready to settle down yet.

These two are beyond ridiculous. They do seem well suited and their relationship seems genuine. I just don’t understand why they feel the need to involve the public so heavily. I mean, it’s just embarrassing.
I actually started following her on Instagram while she was filming The Sunday Horse in Georgia. This is before she became official with Ian. She seemed so nice and normal and down to earth. But the SECOND the film wrapped and she was back in LA, I saw her face plastered on every website with these paid little photo-ops as if she desperately wanted to be remembered.

I’m fairly certain that the sex shop photos were taken by an employee of the store, who was then terminated. I like them both, they seem to be a good match with all the activism they do. Still though, a bit thirsty – even to a fan. And that ring, meh.
@Sandwich Agreed re the sex shop thing. It was one covert pic from a store employee, not pap pics of them in there, and months after the fact someone in TVD fandom found the social media accounts of the woman who’d sold the story and pic to TMZ. The woman had IG’d about having sold them out and been fired for it.

Exactly. I live in Toronto, and there are no paps hanging out in the area where Seductions is located. Plus, they sell more than sex aids in there, they also sell clothing (albeit, sexy/clubbing clothes) and Halloween costumes Etc.

I find the timing of this new ring weirddddd and I’m not sure this particular time it’s about thirst. A few weeks ago she had a whole different engagement ring she was showing off. Then a few days ago a trashy tabloid claimed Ian and Nina were being cuddly on the TVD set which I dismissed as clickbait fanfiction. But now Nikki has a brand new gigantic engagement ring she’s giving exclusives to People on. Ok??? That doesn’t give me the feeling like she’s insecure and he got her a new ring to placate her at all…..

Eh, I can’t shade Ian, look at his rescue pitbull’s sweet face! He seriously took that dog off the street when it was heavily preggo, how many other actors would do that? The German Shepherd is cute too. It does seem rushed but then my marriage was pretty fast (about a year from when we met), and it’s worked out fine so far :-0. Sometimes it’s just true love and you know. Unlike Depp & Heard they seem well suited/natural. Though I am a little worried about her hopping into marriage number two so fast, I hope it works out for Ian’s sake, he seems like he’s wanted to settle down ever since he was with Nina. I hope their babies have his amazing eyes.
I don’t really know much about them, but that story warms my heart! Their dogs are beautiful and Ian and Nikki will have pretty kids too. I’ve never noticed how beautiful his eyes are. Wow.

Bedhead, my take on the thirst:
1) It’s normal for her, she was like this with Paul.
2) It’s not normal for him and I’m Twihardishly convinced it’s at least partly about Nina. He supposedly wanted to get married and settle down with her and she wasn’t ready and bounced. Now he’s flaunting his relationship particularly his engagement with her ex-friend all over the media in ways that are really out of character for him. I think he’s wanting to rub Nina’s face in it, which makes me think he’s not all that over Nina at all. Considering him and Nikki has mutual rebound written all over it, it wouldn’t surprise me.
Non-thirst related opinion: if I didn’t get rebound red flags I’d say they seem compatible and sweet together and I’m with Mrs Darcy on liking all the animal rights work he does.

Agree – too try hard for both Nikki and Ian-showing their exes how flippin’ great it all is now. Right on about Nikki being the poor man’s version of Nina. I think Ian is peaking as a tv actor right now and he is not peaking very high. Nina is a gorgeous, young, talented actress with a bright future – she’s going up while Ian is leveling off-I don’t think they could ever make it long term-the classic A Star is Born story. Nina doesn’t have to settle for a thirsty, short, aging actor who always wears silly oversize boots with lifts -even on hot days, and hats which only draw attention to his receding hairline issue. Nikki on the other hand, has already peaked as an obscure dime-a-dozen teenage actress and does not have a shining future in film or music – she just doesn’t have it. She and Ian are actually a good match at this point.
@ A.Key: I agree that she looks a lot like Nina, which is another rebound red flag for me.
@ Mary Simon: That’s very… generous… towards Nina. I like her but she’s a dime a dozen CW actress who doesn’t stand out from her peers in terms of looks or ability or hustle. After 6 years as a lead on TVD she’s still only getting the kind of minor supporting movie roles Danneel Harris (who?) was getting 5 years ago, before she hit 30, an age Nina will be at before long. If Nina or her team were confident she had any chance of making herself happen, she wouldn’t have signed back on for another season of TVD. All three of these people seem much of a muchness in terms of talent and career potential to me.
@sunshine – I got such a kick out of your response and I do understand exactly what you are saying. I’m looking at everything a little differently now. I still think Nina is great – but you make a good point – why is she signing on for another year of that lousy show – the first two years were great but I stopped watching long ago – Nina or not; the show is just awful. You are right, she should have moved on by now. I always felt she has “it” but she is hanging around what should be a springboard gig. Wonder if the money is that good? Or is it the best she and her people can do? Maybe Ian is the one who gave Nina the over-sized lift-fitted boot.
@ Mary Simon: you just made me give a very unladylike snort at “over-sized lift-fitted boot”. Priceless. I think TVD’s just the best her people can do for her, because the CW doesn’t pay much. I like her, and despite the thirst and ill-advised rebound engagement I like Ian too, but I think they’re TV actors who’ve probably found their level in terms of fame. Nikki, I don’t know enough about (outside of gossip stuff) to be able to comment much on her career.
Ha! It’s totally shameless but they’re harmless. Kinda reminds me of Ashlee Simpson’s engagement photos with Pete was back when – the dad had realized that if he just took the photos himself he could get the payout.

I cannot type one bad word about Ian Somerhalder. My best friend was his godmother and I’ve been watching his career since he was young.
All I know…is that he is a very giving man. He funds projects which help animals and he also works on projects to help people. He is in my home town all the time, giving his time to drum-up funding for projects.
He has a huge heart and if he’s out having fun and basking in the lights of cameras a bit…I say, let him shine, and despite what some cruel people have posted about him…he DOES, indeed, shine.

Ian has always been an animal lover who lends his fame to helping our furry friends. He walks the talk and has for years. Nikki has commented her dogs are like her children (this was ages ago) and that speaks of a good heart. I like this couple and I hope they make it!
Sure the dogs as kids thing is sweet but isnt that the way most animal owners feel?!
It’s nice to hear thathe gives his time/money to charity. I will not shade him for that. i will just say that this chick has a history basking her ass off. but whatever.Those dogs look happy and cared for, not to mention way more authentic and soulful than nikki.

That’s the thing. The pap shots are silly, but he seems like a pretty nice dude. At least they appreciate and enjoy their fame. I was so excited when I got engaged, I couldn’t help gushing. congrats to them! and so what if she just got legally divorced, it was prob over for a long time before the divorce went through. it’s their life and their decision to make.

The cast of TVD is changing next season. I’m hoping Nina is leaving but it could be Ian. If it is he is probably trying to market himself so he can get another gig.

I don’t know… yes these photos seem fame whorey and thirsty, but aren’t they just doing what a lot of other celebrities have done? I don’t think they’re doing anything wrong. They clearly just didn’t use a very good team to do it through since it’s this obvious to everyone what they are doing. I like both of these people, mostly because of the fact that they are dog friends and rescue animals.
I used to love her from the Eclipse promotion tours till she separated from Paul, I thought it was incredibly sweet and down to earth the fact they fell in love at first sight, of course I knew they would get divorce sooner than later but this thing with Ian screams her old Nikki ways of selling her own stories -or KStew-Sparkles-Reed love/lust triangle to the paparazzi…Sad, I thought she was over that now.
