Hugh Grant is in NYC to promote his latest movie, The Rewrite, which is probably another mediocre but not outright awful vehicle. On Wednesday night, he appeared on Watch What Happens Live, which is increasingly becoming a go-to stop on so many actors’ promotional trails. I’m not sure how I feel about that! But Hugh was actually somewhat charming. It was during the “Plead the Fifth” part of the show that Hugh made the most news:
First question: Andy Cohen asked Hugh when he last watch p0rn. Hugh said: “I’m rather proud of this. About three years. I went cold turkey… I now have three children, so I think there’s a correlation.” Yes, he does have three children. With two different women, with their pregnancies overlapping. Classic. And is “cold turkey” a weird kind of fancy p0rn? Because he’s totally still watching p0rn.
Cohen also asked him about his 11-year relationship with Elizabeth Hurley back in the day, when they were one of the hottest British couples in the world. The question was “Why didn’t it work out?” and Hugh thinks for a moment and says, “It did. She’s still my best friend. The sex bit probably fizzled out, but now she’s my absolute best friend. [She’s] the number one person I call in a crisis.”
Then Sarah Jessica Parker called in and asked him who he would prefer not to work with again and Hugh had to plead the fifth. It seemed like Hugh and SJP were very awkward with each other, but he apparently does like her, so it’s not like he was going to say “I would prefer to never work with SJP again.” He actually listed his favorite leading ladies as SJP, Sandra Bullock and Marisa Tomei. Besides, in another part of the show, he said that he doesn’t stay in touch with Julia Roberts and that’s because “I’ve probably made too many jokes about the size of her mouth. She might hate me by now.” He made a joke about how he “was aware of a faint echo” as he kissed Julia but, “She is actually… she was great and very, very beautiful.”
Oh, and Hugh also talked about Jon Stewart. A few months ago, Stewart said Hugh was the worst guest he’s ever had. Hugh said on WWHL: “He wasn’t entirely wrong. I did have a tantrum backstage. About once a year, I have a really mega tantrum and sadly he witnessed one. So, he’s absolutely right…I get very annoyed when people think that I’m sort of nice or diffident or [a] polite English gentleman — all those phrases make me gnash my teeth. I’m a nasty piece of work and I think people should know that. It’s enraging.”

I like his British honesty. And yeah, people should stop expecting celebrities to be nice. I mean, nobody should be an a-hole, but realistically speaking, not all of us are nice, so why do celebrities have to be nice? We all have bad days, except here many people witness their bad days and turn them into stories, like God forbid a celebrity is not photoshoot ready and people pleasing all the time.
Anyway, that Julia Roberts joke made me forgive him anything lmao.
I don’t think it necessarily about the need to be nice. It is about the need to be professional. There are many times when I don’t want to be nice while to doing my job, but I suck it up, put a smile on my face and force myself to remain professional. It is the fact that celebs in general think they are above this that is so enraging, especially given all the perks they get.
I don’t think it has to do with celebrity its just human behavior. Some people are capable and willing to remain professional and kind no matter the situation and others either aren’t or choose not to because they feel justified in treating others poorly.
The “I heard a faint echo every time I kissed Julia Roberts” line was hysterical. Absolutely hysterical.
Maybe he should go back to Porn – he has managed to impregnate two different women 3 times in about 2 years ( 2 of them almost simultaneously)
It’s his life and he accepts what he has created and seems happy about it.
Oh Please – everyone written about on this site can claim that – it doesn’t stop people side eyeing and gossiping about it – that’s what this site of for….and I will Judge – 2 women simultaneously pregnant by him?
He’s a Dog.
We know he’s a nasty piece of work, but because of that, among other things, I find him charming.
Hugh was my platonic lover years ago but his sordid life has turn me off of him. I was nuts about him 13/14 years ago. It’s all gone now.
Well, you know what… at least he was honest.
Nah, more likely he’s being charmingly manipulative.
I’d like to get toasted at Andy Cohen’s bargain knick knack shop/clubhouse. He can be obnoxious, but he alwys gets the guests to spill some good tea.
I heard theres a bottle of wine or champs on ice at your hotel, a fully stocked bar in the car and guests have to arrive 2 hours prior to filming for hair and makep where more drinks are available. Plus you have a bartender during the show, so its kind of genious! He gets them spilling the tea and then we barely hear anything more than the title of the book, movie etc…sometimes the guests are really shnockered and it mskes for great reality tv moments!
Clearly he has an issue with p0rn if he needs to pat himself on the back for not watching it for 3 years.
He seems like the kind of guy who has issues with watching p0rn. That’s exactly why I believe him that he hasn’t seen any in 3 years – most addictions are easier to handle if you abstain completely as casual indulgence isn’t possible anymore.
I saw the pic of Hugh before the header appeared and thought “No,not another baby!!!”
I remember when John Stewart talked about his worst guest and called Hugh out as being his worst guest because of so much backstage complaining and drama, and it was so refreshing to see him absolutely own up to it 100 percent, Not all this PR backtracking, blah, blah.
His response on twitter when hearing what Stewart had recently said:
“Turns out my inner crab got the better of me with TV producer in 09.
Unforgivable. J Stewart correct to give me kicking.”
How do we know he has a purn problem again?
I always thought he was miscast as a cute, anxious, sweet nervous guy looking for true love. His best parts were playing the thorough rogue and scoundrel he is.
I always enjoy Hugh when he is being a cad. Think Daniel Cleaver. Or Will Freeman. (Bridget Jones and About a Boy)
As much as I loved him in Sense and Sensibility… I like my Hugh with a bit of a bite.
And I am nominating Drew Barrymore, as the actress he would not name.
I suspect Bill Murray feels the same way.
Oh When did Murray and Drew work together? I thought that Drew and Hugh movie was kind of cute-for a cheesy romantic comedy. And of course he and Andie McDowell in the iconic 4 weddings. He has co starred with so many well known leading ladies. Drew seems cool and down to earth, so it was surprising to think it might be her. I bet Julia is one, but he didn’t want to let his shade of her reveal that so he back tracked and said she was great. Or maybe it is someone from England? Or Renee Z????
As for charming, he is ALWAYS funny and charming in interviews that I’ve seen. It’s why I’ve always loved him. He just funny and yes, lame at the same time. But so honest about how cranky and what a player he is, that it makes me overlook that in favor of the charming humor.
I just love watching him-even in mediocre to crappy movies. lol.
I couldn’t care less what his porn habits are and I doubt anyone else does either. When I read the title, I knew he has something to promote so oooh, now it’s important. :::rolls eyes:::
I will always love him!!
He came off as a total jerk – only like curvy women if I am drunk- that lovely comment was left out of the article.
He may be a jerk, but he is honest, and funny, and wry. I didn’t like his floppy hair, bumbling rom com roles. I liked him in Remains of the Day and An Awfully big Adventure, where he played a complete jerkface! He owned it! I don’t buy for a minute he is off Prn. His kids are tiny and its not like he cares for them 24/7. Stay nasty Hugh! be yourself!
