Julianne Moore wins Best Actress Oscar for ‘Still Alice’

While Julianne Moore’s Best Actress Oscar win wasn’t a surprise, it was more than welcome. Julianne’s awards reign this season reminded me of Jeff Bridges’ winning streak several years ago for Crazy Heart. We don’t even really remember Bridges’ performance in that one particular film, but it was more about it being “his turn” and “his time.” Same with Julianne – is Still Alice her greatest work ever? No, because it’s just another wonderful performance in a career of strong work. Julianne got this because it was her turn, her time and all of the stars aligned for her. And good for her.

Julianne was emotional and funny when she won. At the Spirit Awards, Julianne joked/told the truth about the miniscule budget on Still Alice, saying that she brought her own bras and her own food to the set. For her Oscar speech, it did feel like fait accompli so the emotion wasn’t as strong, but still, she was jazzed.

She thanked her management team first, then her family, then the cast and crew on Still Alice. She spoke about what it meant to play someone with Alzheimer’s and represent their struggles and “people with Alzheimer’s deserve to be seen.” Finally, she thanked her husband and her children, saying: “Thank you for my life, thank you for giving me a home!”

Yay for Julianne!!

    Bravo!

Well that surprised absolutely no one. Problem with this year’s oscars: everybody who has won all other awards wins this one too. Boring.

…and hallelujah! It’s about freaking time. And btw, she looked wonderful, I thought – best she’s ever looked. (Which, sad to say, wouldn’t take a lot, since she has little or no fashion sense to speak of – that, or her stylist is blind.) But she looked perfect tonight in every way and she was so gracious and unpretentious in her acceptance speech. Finally, the much-deserved Oscar for Julianne.

    Finally!

  3. Alexis says:

Great to see her recognized. She’s a major, major talent. Everyone knows her, but somehow she’s still so underrated.

  4. Tulip says:

Ha! There is no one happier than her! Way to go Julianne Moore!

  5. OSTONE says:

Majorly deserved. Finally Academy Award Winner Juliane Moore!

  6. Patty says:

She’s come a long way since The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Very well deserved. Happy for her.

    • Jezza says:

…don’t forget the cinematic masterpiece that is Nine Months. It’s a contemporary classic!

Good for her, though. She has come a long way and has been in some really good movies!

Dying to see this, not really a big run here in small town USA. Guess I’ll wait for Netflix or Amazon prime. I hope I can get out of my own nurse who has taken care of alzheimers residents for 20 years head and enjoy the show instead of critiquing the medical inaccuracies- can’t help it, I still watch for breathing after death and staff who never washes their hands in movies and TV shows.

She is one of our greatest actresses – I love her. Bravo!

But did anyone else feel like this was Winslet winning for The Reader kind of situation? A superb actress who should have won 3 Oscar noms ago who was now getting a career prize. Yes, happens a lot but Moore (and Winslet) is not your average ingenue or a good actress – she’s one of the most versatile, dedicated and enchanting talents in the industry. I don’t why I feel so personally involved (lol) but I want to look back on her win and think of it as a truly deserved win, not a career prize. She should have won for Far From Heaven. :/

I agree that this is similar to Bridges. You aren’t really going to remember the perf or film. Bums me out because she deserves better – for the performance to go down in film history. She’s Julianne Moore. When I think back to last year and Blanchett’s win, I won’t ever forget that performance. It’s still one of the strongest performances in recent years – and best wins in the 5 – 10 years.

My favorite performance of the year was easily Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl but I think the nomination was her prize. However, people won’t be forgetting that performance any time soon.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Rosamund’s performance was truly chilling. I agree that Julianne deserved this prize long ago for better roles but I do like how she is also using this to campaign for awareness and a cure. She’s turning it into positive advocacy. Love her for that.

      • Jayna says:

Did Rosamund win any award this season? I thought she was great in it.

      • Hullubaloooo says:

Yep, if the Oscars were about performance then Rosamund had it by a MILE. Sadly, they’re about whose turn it is. I don’t particularly rate Julianne Moore but that’s just my taste.

  9. Wallflower says:

So happy for Julianne Moore. She was great as Sarah Palin too.

    • Jayna says:

She was “brilliant” as Sarah Palin. When I heard she was going to play that role, I thought it was a joke, I just didn’t see it. She was just brilliant.

  10. Amy says:

I’m not sure how many people saw Still Alice here but I did. My grandmother had dementia and she ended up with an amputated leg due to gangrene in her foot. She was so far gone my mom had to make the decision to amputate her own mom’s leg. So this movie was super emotional for me.

There is a point in the movie in which Julieanne’s character is invited to make a speech at an Alzeihmer’s conference. At this point, she has had to stop working and remembering things has become difficult. She reads her speech which took her days to write and as she reads it, she highlights the sentences so she doesn’t lose her mark or accidentally repeat what she just said. That scene alone is very powerful and I almost couldn’t hold it together. Julieanne totally deserved the Oscar in my opinion. I enjoyed Reese in Wild and Rosamund in Gone Girl (didn’t see Birdman or Theory of Everything) but they didn’t move me like Julianne’s performance did. This isn’t some throwaway performance. For anyone whose had to watch a family member deteriorate in front of your eyes with Alzeihmer’s, this movie will stay with you.

    • ORLY says:

That’s just it, though. Everyone has a story about someone with Alzheimer’s do the story/movie is emotional. I think the main reason Julianne won was because of how relatable this was. Not that she didn’t do a great job. I prefer her role in The Kids Are Alright.

    • Diana B says:

I think she did an outstanding job. She was a deserving winner because a role like that can get over the top, but she was so natural! When she was scared I felt afraid, when she was angry and frustrated I felt angry and frustrated, when she was helpless I felt oh, so helpless. She was amazing I will remeber her performance for many years to come.

      • ORLY says:

I never said she didn’t deserve the award. Of all the nominees, she was most deserving. I was referring to times when I thought she did better and the fact that Still Alice is a related movie for all. Julianne is an outstanding actress, no one can dispute that.

  11. kibbles says:

There were a lot of criticism about the lack of diversity in this year’s Oscars, but I couldn’t be happier with the winners this year. The winners (and even the nominees such as Keaton) were well deserved. These actors have put in years of hard work that have largely gone unrecognized. They are underrated and tend to fly under the radar compared to lesser talented but more widely talked about stars like Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sandra Bullock, and Halle Berry. I hope the academy continues this trend of not always giving the award to the “IT” guy or girl of the moment.

  12. Jayna says:

I was heading out to see it and never made it today. I will catch it, though.

  13. Lost account says:

    Finally. Raise the roof!

  14. Camille (The Original) says:

    Yay! Love her.

  15. Boxy Lady says:

When she thanked her dad for showing her the world and thanked her husband and kids for giving her a home, I thought,” Oh right. Fellow military brat! Yay!” 🙂

I’m glad she finally won. I’ve been rooting for her for years. Next, we gotta get Annette Bening in there!

  16. Kali says:

    YAY! About time 😄

  17. Mrs. Darcy says:

It’s not out in the U.K. yet but I definitely plan on seeing it. My aunt had early onset Alzheimers and it was horrible and sad and so much more light needs to be brought to this devastating disease, so if nothing else I’m glad she won for that reason alone. I do think it was long overdue, though I absolutely loved Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl, I think the complexity of that role went really overlooked.

  18. serena says:

Aww I’m so happy she won!!

  19. Ravensdaughter says:

She really seems like a gracious, sincere, dedicated actress and mom.
I know she is out there in the trenches in the post Sandy Hook campaign to end gun violence, not a task to be taken lightly given the nasty counter-tactics The NRA is capable of.
She was radiant! I felt so happy for her!

  20. Ginger says:

Yay! She’s one of my favorites! I’m so happy she won finally! :)))) I’m afraid I didn’t make it to the end of the broadcast this year as I’m now living in EST zone. I had to get up early today. Boo. So, I had some nice surprises like this one this morning when I woke up and checked who won. I really want to see the film but I think it’s one of those that I can only see once because it hits close to home. My grandfather had senile dementia for many years. It was up and down. Good days and bad days. I’m glad to see that Alzheimer’s is being portrayed in a prominent way. I always look forward to watching Julianne on film.

  21. Petra says:

Has anyone even seen this film? I mean this actress isn’t exactly a box office draw. It’s kind of hard to wrap your head around someone getting an Oscar when no one ever goes to see any of the movies the winner is in. Unless of course she had some minor bit part with a big name starring in it. You’re sort of left thinking the Academy is forced to draw straws some years because it has to get rid of a trophy. So, I guess congratulations on getting the short stick?

  22. Abby says:

Her speech made me tear up. I haven’t seen the movie. I had planned to, but the book hit me so hard emotionally that I decided to wait a little bit. I’m glad she’s made this campaign a platform for Alzheimer’s awareness. And glad she won.
