J.K. Simmons wins Best Supporting Actor for ‘Whiplash’

EE British Academy Film Awards 2015 Official After Party - Arrivals
Venerable character actor J.K. Simmons has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of a sadistic music instructor in Whiplash. Simmons has swept the awards season, winning practically every award he was nominated for.Whiplash was the scariest non-horror movie I’ve ever seen. That was all due to Simmons’ performance, which kept the audience on edge. Simmons’ so aptly played an emotionally abusive a*hole that it’s hard for me to even be happy for him, his character elicited a kind of fight or flight response in me. That’s a testament to how incredible an actor he is. Also a testament to Simmons were all his fellow actors standing up in the audience.

Here’s some of Simmons’ speech. He really gushed about his wife and family and then he ended on a very nice note, reminding us all to thank our parents and talk to them.

Thank you to the Academy, thank you to everyone involved in the making of Whiplash. I am grateful every day for the most remarkable person I know, my wife the wonderful Michelle Schumacher. I am grateful for your love, your kindness, your wisdom, your sacrifice and your patience, which brings me to the above average children… Joe and Olivia you are extraordinary human beings smart, funny, kind loving people and that’s because you are a reflection of your mother. And if I may, call your mom everybody. Call your mom, call your dad if you’re lucky to have a parent alive on this planet. Don’t text, don’t email, call ’em, tell them you love them and thank them and listen to them for as long as they want to talk to you.

Congratulations to Simmons! I’m going to call my mom tomorrow, I promise! I’ll ask her for a favor probably, but I’ll call her.

Asst Chief Pope! I know he was the shoo-in, but I’m so happy he got his statue. I loved his tribute to his wife. The man can do no wrong.

  4. nicegirl says:

Congratulations! Very well deserved, a great actor. Remember him as the dad in Juno? awesome!

  5. charliehunnnamlover says:

I have always thought he was an excellent actor since his days on Oz. Congrats to him.

    Love it! SO deserving……

  7. Lucy2 says:

Congrats to him, and I loved his right to the point speech.

  8. KatyD says:

Gee, no one saw this coming. What a surprise!

I think they should move the Oscars up to be the first award show and not the last. That way, it’s not a given who will win many of the awards.

That being said, congrats to him, as it was well deserved.

  9. Char says:

I was happy to see him win, & his speech was sweet.

  10. GingerCrunch says:

Love letter to his family! Awwww.

  11. Miss M says:

His speech reminded that I was about to say “I love you” to my mom when she called and she kept talking about fashion police and I completely forgot it. I will say it soon!

Jk Simmons, you are amazing! Congrats!

  12. Tiffany says:

Great!!!! Happy for him. Soooooo…three hour ceremony but 40 seconds for the winners to speak. What is wrong with this….

  13. **sighs** says:

So much class. Love him. So happy for him.

  14. ozmom says:

Calling your mom tomorrow and asking for a favor…awesome. I think you missed the point of his heartfelt speech.

  15. Mojoman says:

I was crossing my fingers when they announced the nominees and YAAASSSS! He got it! I was so happy Cause people consider him as an underdog compared to the other nominees. He is such a versatile actor and well deserves it. Its about time!

  16. pixie-stix says:

It’s a long road from Law & Order! So great to see this veteran win for his powerhouse performance. Can’t wait to see him with Keaton (c’mon win that Oscar Michael), and T.Hiddletson in Skull Island.

  17. Chem says:

Music school is really hard, I know plenty of music students. Also fashion design is very demanding too. They are emotionally and physically difficult. It’s great seeing it in such good film.

  18. Neil says:

Not bad for a guy who once played an inmate/predator/Nazi. Oh wait….

  19. I Choose Me says:

Woo hoo! I was so hoping he would win.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Me, too. I’ve always enjoyed his work, and he seems like a decent man.

    • Diana B says:

Me too!!! He was so good in Whiplash and I was screaming my head off when he won. He was a sure thing at this point but I was ecstatic none the less.

  20. InvaderTak says:

The fedora needs to be kept in a special case with a custom replica of the Oscar statue as a stand.

  21. Wallflower says:

Glad JK Simmons won, but why wasn’t Miles Teller nominated?

  22. jc126 says:

Unbelievable – Schillinger gets an Oscar! I love it. I really like him. Love seeing a guy plug away for years and get an Oscar eventually.

  23. babez says:

So happy for him. The fact that in life he is so completely different from his characters (he comes off as sweet and appreciative of his blessings in real life), just testifies to his greatness as an actor. Watched Whiplash over the weekend and it was awesome and perfect and J.K. was simply the best, his character was almost as badass as Schillinger(Oz). He is really good.. Well-deserved.

  24. Beth says:

Congratulations to JK Simmons and what a deserving win. He was a lock for Whiplash and I was thrilled it snagged two other Oscars in Sound Mixing and Editing. Too bad it lost Adapted Screenplay to the mediocre TIG but overall I’m happy that Whiplash overperformed at both the BAFTAs and Oscars. 😀

  25. GlimmerBunny says:

Well deserved. I honestly think his performance in “Whiplash” was one of the best supporting performances I’ve ever seen, right up there with Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa in “Inglorious Basterds”.

  26. Ava says:

    Amazing speech…loved it!

  27. Goodnight says:

I knew he was going to win, how could he NOT win? He’s an amazing guy and an amazing talent. I also love having him watched him work through the years towards this.
