Pres. Obama criticized for giving lame DVDs as gifts

When British Prime Minister Gordon Brown visited Washington at the beginning of the month, it was more than just a visit with two heads of state. The general rule for an incoming American administration is that the British head of state (or the prime minister, since many consider the Queen the British head of state) will be the first world leader to visit a new American president. It has something to do with the British-American “special relationship” and all of that stuff.

Since it was their first formal meeting as Prime Minister and President, a gift-giving ceremony was in order. Generally, presidents and prime ministers give gifts to each other upon the first meeting or for special occasions. As formal gift-giving has become a bit of scandal in America with the hints of pay-offs and tax frauds, American gift-giving has taken a hit. George W. Bush was somewhat famous for giving away pens.

So what gifts did Gordon Brown and President Obama exchange? I hate to admit it, but Brown’s gifts were really, really cool, and Obama’s gifts sucked. According to The Daily Mail, Brown gave Obama “an ornamental pen holder made from the timbers of the Victorian anti-slave ship HMS Gannet.” Brown also gave Obama a first-edition seven-part Churchill biography, and lavished gifts on Malia and Sasha, getting them dresses and as-yet unpublished British-authored children’s books. Cool.

So what did President Obama give The Browns? Twenty-five DVDs, stuff you could pick up at Blockbuster. The movies were good, don’t get me wrong. The collection included Veritgo, Schindler’s List, The Grapes of Wrath, E.T., Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Casablanca, On the Waterfront, To Kill a Mockingbird, Chinatown, Some Like It Hot and The Searchers. But considering the thought Gordon Brown put into his gifts, Obama’s gifts are totally lame. The British papers thought so too:

As he headed back home from Washington, Gordon Brown must have rummaged through his party bag with disappointment. Because all he got was a set of DVDs. Barack Obama, the leader of the world’s richest country, gave the Prime Minister a box set of 25 classic American films – a gift about as exciting as a pair of socks.

Mr Brown is not thought to be a film buff, and his reaction to the box set is unknown. But it didn’t really compare to the thoughtful presents he had brought along with him.

The Prime Minister gave Mr Obama an ornamental pen holder made from the timbers of the Victorian anti-slave ship HMS Gannet. The unique present delighted Mr Obama because oak from the Gannet’s sister ship, HMS Resolute, was carved to make a desk that has sat in the Oval Office in the White House since 1880.

Mr Brown also handed over a framed commission for HMS Resolute and a first edition of the seven-volume biography of Churchill by Sir Martin Gilbert. In addition, Mr Brown and his wife showered gifts on the Obama children giving Sasha and Malia an outfit each from Topshop and six children’s books by British authors which are shortly to be published in America.

In return, the Obamas gave the Browns two models of the presidential helicopter, Marine One, to take home to sons Fraser and John. The Prime Minister has not had the best of luck when receiving gifts from U.S. presidents.

He was given a fur-trimmed brown leather bomber jacket by George W. Bush during his first trip to America in the summer of 2007. Commentators gleefully pointed out that the garment was hardly in keeping with Mr Brown’s usual sober attire of business suit and tie.
Downing Street yesterday refused to state which movies were in the box set.

But the Mail has learned it included classics such as Star Wars, The Godfather and Citizen Kane and was produced by the American Film Institute as a ‘special request’ for the White House last month.

Perhaps pertinently, given Britain is floundering in an economic slump, the DVD collection was thought to feature the movie of John Steinbeck’s Great Depression novel, ‘The Grapes Of Wrath’. The gift also included the Oscar-winning boxing biopic ‘Raging Bull’ starring Robert Di Nero and Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller Psycho – maybe a comment on the PM’s notorious short fuse?

And he will hope that at a General Election the British public do not shun his imploration for another term in office by thinking at the ballot box of the famous line from another of the movies, Casblanca: ‘Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.’

But following Mr Brown’s his recent troubles – the UK entering recession, soaring job losses and home repossessions, Labour struggling in the polls and threats of leadership challenges – he may be pleased at being able to settle down for a quiet night in front of the ultimate feel-good movie: It’s A Wonderful Life.

From The Daily Mail

I would totally understand a movie-related gift if Gordon Brown was some sort of famous movie-buff. But even then, I wouldn’t give him a set of DVDs anyone could order from Amazon. If Brown was a movie buff, you’d get him a limited edition Japanese poster from The Searchers or something like that.

One of the best gifts (in my opinion) that an American president ever gave a head of state was when President Bush took the then-prime minister of Japan Koizumi to Graceland. Prime Minister Koizumi was famously obsessed with Elvis Pressley, and it was a remarkably sweet gesture from President Bush to his friend.

Amateur hour at the White House. I’m surprised this hasn’t gotten more press. How embarrassing.

  2. Jane says:

Seriously… For shame. I (think) he wants to come off frugal, but this just comes off as uncaring and pathetic.

DVDs?! This isn’t a birthday present for your 16 year old nephew twice removed! It’s one of the only avid pro-US ally in the world, man. Get real.

  3. daisy424 says:

    Embarrassing…………

  4. prezteleprompter says:

How foolish we must look to other countries. The DVD’s aren’t even compatible with the U.K. format. If someone would’ve taken the time to do their homework, they would’ve realized that.
Then Hillary with her “reset” button gift. How embarrassing for the U.S.!!!

  5. Orangejulius says:

Disappointing. Especially after my son told me that Obama could take a crap on top of my head and I’d still think he was wonderful…

  6. JennaMeow says:

Amateur hour indeed. Such a dick move. Not to mention that he gave the Churchill statue back…The Brits must love us now.

  7. Jen says:

“Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn” is from Gone with the Wind, not Casablanca. I do agree that the DVD set was a tacky choice.

  8. rbsesq says:

I pride myself on being a good gifter and I’m just horrible embarrassed for him. The PM gave such thoughtful gifts, and there are so many things the President’s staff could have found that would have represented some aspect of American culture and art, but would have still been inexpensive.

  9. jess says:

    oh dear….

  10. MsEllaneous says:

The gifts Brown gave to Obama had more importance than reported above.

Brown gave President Obama a couple of things. One was a pen holder fashioned from the HMS Gannet. It is an anti-slavery ship. He then gave a framed commissioning paper from the HMS Resolute, which is the resolute desk in the Oval Office, the sister ship also of the Gannet. And then he also gave a first edition biography of Winston Churchill.

“And if that weren’t enough of a diss to our greatest ally, Great Britain, Obama also gave back a bust of Winston Churchill, which was given to us on 9/11 as a symbol of unity. He said, “No, go ahead. Take it back.” I mean, like, “No, no. Seriously, let it stay here in America. You can put it in a museum.” “No, no, take it.” You’ve got to be kidding me, right?

Meanwhile, in Geneva, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave Russia what was supposed to be a reset button indicating that we were resetting ties between the two countries. How can we get more friendly with Russia, you know, than saying I looked into his eyes and I just think he’s dreamy.

What? But instead, the button didn’t say “reset.” It goes slightly different Russian word. It translated to “overcharged.” You’ve got to be kidding me.

    Unbelieveable.

  11. Ron says:

They need a gift basket office. The gifts for the Kids Choice Awards are better.

  12. Annie says:

    Yikes.

Does that make me lame in saying I would’ve loved a whole collection of DVDs? :X

  13. Dating Misanthrope says:

What you failed to include in your story is that American DVDs are a different format than European ones so when the Prime Minister gets home…he won’t be able to watch them. Brown also gave Obama the signed order to comission the Resolute, another anti-slavery ship that the timbers now make the Resolute desk in the Oval Office. Obama also returned a bust of Churchill that was gifted to America after 9/11 to show solidarity with one of our key allies. This is a HUGE story in England. Obama basically did a big “eff you!!!” to one of our few remaining allies in the world. Love how he is befriending our enemies and pissing off our friends! Way to go Obama!

  14. Baholicious says:

The Queen is the Head of State and the Prime Minister forms the government in her name.

The Brits may have come to Obama, but Obama came to Ottawa 😉 Very appropriate and respectful thing to do considering we are each other’s and the world’s largest trading partners and also share the world’s largest undefended border.

It spoke volumes for a new relationship between our countries after the neglect and outright derision for that relationship present during the Bush years.

That being said, as for Obama’s giftastrophe, this is why husbands who are smart let their wives do the gift shopping.

  15. Tony says:

As much as you want this man to succeed, he comes off as naive and amateurish.

  16. Leandra says:

They’re not excited children opening Christmas presents. Why do they bother with the gift thing anyway? It’s not necessary to swap presents and would show solidarity with the message of the economy, to cut back on spending and learn frugality, time they set some examples.

  17. Sinbad says:

Obama is doing a good job, early in the game too. Bush was the true amateur in his terrible handling of the nation.

  18. geronimo says:

This has been blown out of proportion by the right wing media (UK) just to have a pop at both Brown and Obama: Brown’s supposedly dissed on the international stage, and Obama is shown to be limited, naive and inexperienced. Seriously, who really cares here? The media on both sides of the pond need to let both of them get on with the job they’re being paid to do and stop making mountains out of pathetic molehills.

  19. becca says:

“According to The Daily Mail, Brown gave Obama “an ornamental pen holder made from the timbers of the Victorian anti-slave ship HMS Gannet.””

And here’s the kicker. The wood from the HMS Gannet is ALSO the SAME wood that was used to carve the Reslolute desk – the desk that now sits in the Oval Office.

Obama, you’re in charge of fixing a crumbling economy, fix our health care, and have to restore our reputation in a volatile world. Putting thought into a gift to our STRONGEST ALLY should be a walk in the park.

    *headdesk*

  20. Emily says:

If you buy a special DVD player, you can play DVDs from other formats. We have a bunch of DVDs bought in France that work on our multizone DVD player. I’m sure the prime minister can afford a new DVD player.

  21. Feebee says:

Things can’t be as bad in Britain as they are in the US if they have time to worry over crap like this.

I agree the gift was crappy but then the gift exchange thing seems a little put on too and with all that Obama’s got going on at the moment, I doubt it was actually him that suggested the DVD collection. Mr Brown probably has an assistant that comes up with unique and interesting gift ideas.

  22. Baholicious says:

Becca, the UK isn’t the US’s strongest ally. That’s just post 9/11 bullshit.

It’s always astounding to me the number of Americans who either don’t know, or don’t care who their strongest ally is.

    Canada is.

  23. Jen says:

Is it wrong that I’m enjoying seeing the pedestal *finally* starting to crumble a little bit?

  24. Annie says:

And to top it all off, strongest ally or not. People have different ideas of what’s a good gift.

I can’t tell you how many times my uncle’s flubbed on gifts for me. Now, he just hands the money to my aunts. Same with my dad.

Some people are just poor gift givers.

But I’ll tell you this, my uncle’s also a very well-respected attorney with his own firm right on the strand.

So hey, crappy gift-giver, but good at what he does.

  25. daisy424 says:

Baho, It’s possible that Becca meant Ally’s in the form of the Military troops to Iraq & Afghanistan, not trade.
You are absolutely right. Canada is our largest trading partner in the US, followed closely by China. Thanks for that info, I found it very interesting.

  26. Trillion says:

This is so not a big deal. What’s embarrassing is the press it’s getting. Just like that hunky non-condom wearing dude breaking up with the Palin girl. It’s just not news.

  27. Paul Phillips says:

Other than Brown is blind in one eye and doesn’t see all that great out of the other DVD’s make a “great” gift. I hope the films are formatted so they can be played in machines used in Europe, which are different from the US. Oh, and Michelle’s gifts to the Brown’s two young boys… models of the Presidential helicopter available in the White House gift shop for 15 bucks apiece. What a savvy pair.

  28. InFL says:

    …money doesn’t buy class…

  29. Ana says:

Shouldn’t there be someone hired to pick out the gifts and make sure he makes the right steps as to not offend somebody. Like an international relations manager or something?!!?!?
I don’t think this should be a big deal, if he gave away something expensive people would be complaining because of our economy.

  30. becca says:

Baho @Daisy: I mean as far as foreign policy ventures across the pond, military ventures included. I’m well aware that economically, Canada is our strongest ally.

But as far as Canada goes, I was under the impression that the current PM had spent his time with his head shoved up Bush’s ass when he was president. What does he think of Obama?

Oy, the gift giving thing makes me furious. He needs to put Michelle in charge of the gift-giving to other Heads of State. I wonder if Michelle ripped him a new one. I sure hope so.

  31. Baholicious says:

Just to point out that Canada currently has 2,500 troops deployed in Afghanistan (Kandahar in particular) to make up for the number of US troops mired in Iraq.

The UK has 5,000 troops deployed in Afghanistan. Given Canada only has a population of approximately 33 million people, I’d say we’re making a pretty strong contribution.

The current Canadian PM did have his head up Bush’s ass. I believe he was relieved by Obama and the visit was a good one as I understand it.

  32. Baholicious says:

Oh, and just a p.s. we were considered and referred to as British subjects (ergo, British Army) until 1946. So when people refer to the British participation in WW1 and WWII, that included Canadians.

Considering we’ve only been ‘Canadians’ since 1946 we’ve done pretty good eh?
    😉

  33. JennaMeow says:

Sinbad: Really? Still hating on Bush, huh? And where has the stockmarket gone since your beloved came into office? What about all of his appointees, all of whom have tax problems? Get over it. Any shit that comes this way is Obama’s now, plain and simple. Get over it.

  34. Gracie says:

Odd – this is somewhat old news. Yes, we looked bad in the gift he gave. The goft to the sons was terrible too – Marine 1 helicopters from the Gift Shop.

The White House is filled with former Clinton people, and I am sure there must be an etiquette office of some sort. There’s really no excuse for such silliness.

  35. nashnash says:

JennaMeow: Yeah, all the shit that comes this way is Obama’s problem now, but which were caused by the Bush administration. Seriously, do you think the crises America is experiencing right now just popped out of nowhere the minute Obama was inaugurated? If Bush did a good job as President, Obama wouldn’t be dealing with all the crap that he’s trying to resolve right now.

Oh, and the Churchill statue was a loan. Bush had the statue as a decoration in his office. Obama removed it because he wanted to make the Oval Office his own, and not his predecessor’s.

  36. What says:

Gee Obama got really thoughout personal gifts, dvds hahaha. Everyone knows gifts are suppost to be personal, what an idiot.

  37. Joolzz says:

@ Baho: Thanks for defending our honor!

  38. Jack says:

Obama gets an “F” for effort in gift giving. He would have been better off giving Mr. Gordon 24 pack budlight.

  39. Cas says:

Am I the only one shocked that the article reads that ‘Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.’ is from Casblanca!!?

  40. me says:

people kill me. i guess thats going to be obamas excuse. to BLAME BUSH for his whole term. well sorry obama lovers BUSH IS GONE. no more chimpybushmchilter to scapegoat. lets see how Obama the savior changes things.

  41. me says:

another thing that vexes me is this idea that the good economy can be credited to clinton and the bad one to bush. sorry guys it wasnt clintons doing. it was the tech and internet rise.

  42. gossip_ho says:

@ me : don’t blame tech and internet for the economic crises…the blame should be put on banks and corporate shit.

  43. the original kate says:

hmmm, let’s see what is worse: giving an admittedly lame gift to a head of state, or lying to the world in order to justify a war? i just don’t know…

  44. Trillion says:

Thanks, Original Kate. The comments are telling. If you’re soooo “embarrassed” and “outraged” at this petty nothing, I can’t imagine how completely flipped out you must have been over Bush doing the following: (this is just the short list of course)
-remaining on vacation when warnings came in that bin Laden was planning attacks with planes two months prior to 9/11
-De-regulating banks in 2000, for which we can thank our current mess
-Using dodgy intelligence to sell an awful, bloody war in Iraq, a country that did not, and could not, attack the U.S.
-Putting response to Katrina on the tiny way back burner with his ol’ buddy “Brownie” in charge.
-the list goes on and on….
Let’s just hope Obama doesn’t do worse. It’d be pretty damn hard to out-do W.

  45. janey says:

The Daily Mail is also known over here as ‘The Daily Fascist’.

  46. michellle says:

While I completely agree w/ the Original Kate’s point & Trillion’s list, those gifts & gestures were both thoughtless & embarrassing.

On top of that, Obama left Brown waiting & finally postponed the original meeting due to bad weather after he’d commented on the softness of Washingtonians compared to the people of Chicago when it came to harsh weather.

  47. michellle says:

While I completely agree w/ the Original Kate’s point & Trillion’s list, those gifts & gestures were both thoughtless & embarrassing.

If Canada is the best ally of the US, & the UK/US relationship is simply post 911 BS, then why is the general rule for an incoming admin to have the British Head of State be the 1st to offcially visit?

  48. Ana says:

Okay I have a question about Bush. Isn’t his family rich from oil? Has he made a profit from the prices of oil going up? Some have suggested that was the main cause for war…his greediness.
But since I am politically challanged (among other things) I wanted to hear other people’s take on this….

  49. Annie says:

    Michelle.

Some people are just poor gift givers.

I’d take a man who can’t give a gift, but runs a COUNTRY over what we’ve had for 8 years.

So he can’t give a gift, how many men AREN’T guilty of that? Heck, how many PEOPLE aren’t guilty of that?

I may know my mother/boyfriend/sisters/brothers inside and out, but I still find myself at a loss on what to give them when birthdays/christmas/insert other significant events here roll around.

I’m happy with him so long as he doesn’t give us 8 more years of Bush. Trillion’s right, can’t get much worse than that.

Also, to answer Ana, I believe that yes, he definitely has oil connections (Texas jokes aside). Or had at one point.

The reasons for the Iraq war go beyond just oil. I mean, we’re talking rebuilding contracts for his friends that amounted to millions and millions of dollars, we’re talking being able to finish what his dad could not (in his eyes) weapons’ contracts, etc etc, the root of which, is of course, wanting power and money.

  50. michellle says:

Annie, I think you misread my post.

    Like I said, I completely agree w/ the Original Kate’s point & Trillion’s list.

Moreover, I voted against Bush & for Obama. In fact, I took alot of slack for being against the war before it even began, (unpatriotic & all that.)

Still, I stand by my original statement. Those gifts & gestures were both thoughtless & embarrassing.

That in no way suggests Bush was acceptable or bearable. Actually, beside the increase in funding for African aid I’d say his administration was an utter failure.

My point is, one has nothing to do w/ the other. Shabby gifts don’t even begin to compare w/ waging a senseless war.

Having said that, I doubt Obama actually decided on those things himself. More likely it was some staff member who made the crap decision. Unfortunately, poor choices of staff are a direct reflection on him.

By the way, I agree w/ your list too, though I’d add another two unfortunate & truely frightening justifications; fighting God’s holy war & ridding the Middle East of threats to Israel.

By the way, on top of what I previously wrote, I’ve since heard that the new admin also failed to give Brown a proper dinner as is customary when welcoming heads of state. Not sure if it’s true as I wasn’t there but if true it’s yet another example of how these things just compound the appearance of being a bad host.

  51. Mike R. says:

True, it’s not the most exciting gift in the world, but with that whole recession thing going about I think the President might have been trying not to give his Conservative critics ammunition to shoot him down with.

That having been said…good lord, I need to invite Gordon Brown to my house. Talk about flashy gifting!

  52. Annie says:

Embarrassing is getting a shoe chucked at you in another country (and not picking it up and chucking it back LOL).

In the future, I’m sure he’ll make sure to get 2nd, 3rd and 4th opinions.

At least it wasn’t a “reset” button that really said “overcharged” or some shit like that. LOL

  54. Baho says:

Michelle, read my post again: we WERE British until 1946 and the protocol just stood.

When I spoke about post 9/11 I was specifically referring to Bush and his bootlick Tony Blair.

The point is Obama chose Canada as his first foreign visit as President and that shouldn’t go unnoticed by people in terms of our countries’ relationships.

  55. michellle says:

    Baho:

I’m not disputing or questioning any of your points here. Whether it be; when Canada shook their British identity, how 911 effected US/UK relations, or even if Obama’s visit to Ottawa was a sound decision.

I only asked why the UK’s official visit was foremost among allies in light of the points you provided. It’s an honest question, really.
Based on Kaiser’s article it appears to be a tradition that predates 911.

Moreover, while I just adore the Brits, slighting Canada is the last thing I’d want to do. Not only rarely recognized as the wonderful neighbors they really are, but as a fellow “American” I find the reference applied to U.S. subjects alone as rather insulting on behalf of all Americans; North, South & Central combined.

Again, it was just a question resulting from the dialogue, not an attack.

  56. vanities says:
