Jennifer Lawrence & David O. Russell got into an on-set screaming match

Jennifer Lawrence

David O. Russell has a reputation for being a real piece of work. His history of mistreating actors and crew is disturbing. One only needs to watch this video (NSFW language) of him cursing out Lily Tomlin to see evidence of his unprofessaional ways. The video shows him throwing objects as a crew member cowered in the corner! That’s not the only incident. A RadioTimes article talks about how Russell and George Clooney clashed during the production of Three Kings. Clooney reportedly told Russell, “You can’t shove, push or humiliate people.” And Russell once put Christopher Nolan in a headlock (over Jude Law’s availability) and tore off his clothes on set. He claimed to be getting his kit off in the name of Tibetan Buddhism and to “break the boundaries” with cast members.

Russell appeared to have mellowed during his last few productions. He’s still territorial with his actors and threw a fit over Jennifer Lawrence’s availability, calling her Hunger Games schedule “12 years of slavery.” JLaw previously worked with him on Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle. They’re currently filming the Miracle Mop biopic in Boston, and David lost it again. He threw Harvey Weinstein off the set and started a screaming match with JLaw:

Famed director David O. Russell went on a tear against Jennifer Lawrence and Harvey Weinstein during the filming of the movie Joy … this according to an eyewitness on the set.

We’re told there was a loud argument Tuesday on the Boston set between David and Jennifer, and it started over a scene. The eyewitness says David started screaming at her … it was was ear-piercing and laced with profanities.

A rep for the movie’s studio — Fox 2000 — tells us yes, there was screaming, but it was all method acting. David was just getting J. Law amped-up for a scene in which she screams at someone.

But it doesn’t end there. We’re also told Miramax honcho Harvey Weinstein showed up on the set Wednesday to say hi to Jennifer, but David ordered him to leave. Harvey got as far as the makeup trailer before getting booted.

The studio rep says Harvey was told Tuesday things were moving at warp speed and his visit would be a distraction, but he showed up anyway … unannounced.

And the eyewitness tells us a major exec for Fox was reamed out by David because she was trying to defend the line producer who David wants to fire. The eyewitness says it got so bad the exec started crying. The studio rep says that’s ridiculous … there was a “heated” argument over the line producer, but she didn’t cry.

[from TMZ]

The studio rep is covering tush with the denial, and of course Russell tossed out a lame excuse. Method acting must be the new Tibetan Buddism. Russell hasn’t changed at all, and I believe this story because the video with Lily Tomlin was completely frightening. This guy is unhinged, and he’s gotten away with it because he directs artsy fartsy movies that the Academy loves. Someone needs to kick him off set and into anger management therapy.

I’m including several ads for JLaw’s latest Miss Dior campaign. These look a lot less awkward than her first plasticky campaign.

More she becomes older and more she’s beautiful

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Love the photos of her in the Dior campaign.

    • Tulip says:

      @Angela

      She’s lovely. I’m only choking because she’s 24 .

Awful that the director is allowed to be so vicious on every set. Really, send him to therapy. The rest of us have to behave.

      • Mmhmm says:

        She’s beautiful :).

Being involved in theater and music, I can only say that there are some assholes in this world who are good at what they do…in this case, it’s directing and creating a movie. I’ve dealt with ahole conductor once, but stuck through it because the end product was amazing. Some people left, but I don’t blame them.

    • denisemich says:

This director is a douche. It has been documented in the Sony leaked emails that he is horrible to his staff but he gets Oscars for actors… so, they are willing to deal. I think DeNiro and Cooper are also in this film and it is not their first time working with him either.

I like Jennifer but I think the Dior sweater above looks like Grandma.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

You’re probably right about the sweater, I sort of like it, but it can see the grandma, too.

  2. Stacey says:

    Fun guy

  3. Alex says:

It’s not the first time he behaves like a complete a****** so no surprise there. She knew well about his reputation and decided to work with him once again anyway. So I don’t feel any compassion for her. He should have sunk into oblivion long time ago. But both of them are overrated and overhyped in terms of talent so no wonder they like to work together.

    • charlie says:

Yeah, I would feel more sorry for her if she didn’t chose to work with him again and again. She must have seen the way he treated Amy onthe set of American Hustle.

      • Ninks says:

The other stuff is true; he has a history of treating people horribly and I really believe he can be an utter asshole when he loses his temper – but, the Amy Adams story is false. It was only reported by radar online which they say came from the leaked Sony emails, but that was false. So, it’s possible that JLaw has never experienced that side of him before.

      • Cici says:

Before Hustle came out, Kris Tapley from Hitfix was saying that Russell had a fallout with JLaw and Bale who didn’t want to work with him again. I guess JLaw and David at least made up.

Amy Adams was also photographed in NY in a meeting with Russell and JLaw so there is a good chance she also has a cameo in this movie.

      • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

        @Ninks.
The story with DOR Being bad with Adams and Bale defended her is true.It was in the leaks of Sony gate.
In more according to some journalists( Tapley and Thompson), because of DOR’s behavior during AH filming,Bale doesn’t want to work with him anymore

    • Gill B says:

He’s overhyped, she’s not. My 70-year old mother is a former theatre director and not easily impressed – and she thinks Lawrence is one of the finest natural talents she’s ever seen on the big screen. She probably feels she owes Russell, which is why she signed on for more of his abuse – a pity, she deserves a better director.

  4. Rita says:

This award season was boring without her. Even the media said that we miss her

    • flo says:

Really? It was one of the best in years. The Best Actor race was tight until Cate announced the winner. Not the same can be said about BP because if you followed the circuit, it was pretty much given that Birdman was going to win after scoring the big guild awards. The animated movie was a big “OH” moment Oscar night. It was an award season for movie lovers and not celebrity lovers.

      • Joanne says:

Not really. Redmayne won GG, SAG, BAFTA. It was clear that he would be the winner. But the show flopped very hard. It Had the lowest ratings since 2004

      • flo says:

@Joanne. That’s true but there was a lot of talking about how Birdman’s raising last-minute popularity could help Keaton in the end of what was a very tight race. It COULD have happened but, thankfully, it didn’t because Eddie was superb.
The ceremony flopped because there weren’t move stars nominated and because NPH was terrible

      • niliada says:

For once the Oscars were about talent and nomination good work. Not about the celebrities.

      • qwerty says:

        @Joanne
I love watching the ceremony but this one was a drag. NPH was not funny even though I like him… Plus you knew from the start (well before the start actually) that Julianne would win and that’s the category that’s most interesting to me. Also, other Best Actress nominees were boring as hell.

    • bns says:

Award season is boring with or without her. With her it’s boring AND annoying.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        Amen to that.

      • charlie says:

        I totally agree.

      • FLORC says:

Unashamed fan of hers. There was over exposure for sure, but she had to hustle. Not as much for herself as for the movies too. And she was smart enough to go into hiding for a bit once she didn’t have to be front and center.

You know what happens with boring? You can’t stand it. IT’s a void where you can have no enjoyment and no sense of interest.
With annoying you can’t stand it. It’s frustrating to be around and it’s avoided outright. Nails on a chalkboard is annoying. And it is avoided.

So, when JLaw was both annoying and boring there were loads of people talking about her. So, there must have been enough interest and enjoyment for people to spend time thinking about it enough to form opinions and comments to share.
You may not like her, but she’s boring or annoying enough to keep people from talking and thinking and breaking down her motives/actions.

This is how I understand these words, but I also understand some people do enjoy being very bored and annoyed.
This post seems aggressive, but iit’s how I can best try to understand what is happening when people say something is awful in some way, but don’t avoid it.

      • Jbap says:

        I thought I wouldn’t miss her – but I did.

      • Maya says:

Oscar 2009 was the best year ever regarding the pure talent amongst the nominees in all categories.

      • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

        +20

    • Helo says:

@ Rita: I agree, the awards season was incredibly boring without her…though I have a feeling Lawrence will be a lit more visible next award season.

    • Len says:

Exactly, the. awards season was dull without Jennifer , and the rating show it , both the Golden Globes and the Oscar were down from the last 2 years and Globes had the same hosts , so it wasn’t about bad host … It was about no Jennifer , Brad , Angelina, Leo muscial acts people like last year U2 , cold play , year before that Adele Talyor Swift…

The Oscar were a joke this year no real a list , sorry seeing celebrities from TV shows and ones with huge media presence always doing interviews or Instagram , isn’t going to bring the rating .

The Oscar should realize for them to get viewers they have get Alist and ones that aren’t always in our face twitting or Instagraming or show for every event …hello JLO

      • niliada says:

The Oscars about about crediting good work. Not crediting celebrities. Really good films and good actors/actresses were nominated this year. Brad and ANgie are not the worlds best actors/actresses sorry. Why do they need to be there acting like Royalty? I am glad The Oscars did not throw the bone to Jolie and that turd of a film Unbroken. I would have lost respect for the Oscars if they gave her Best Director nom or win over the truly talented directors.

  5. vauvert says:

At fault are the idiots who hire someone like him – for any kind of job. In my mind that kind of behaviour is unacceptable anywhere, from anyone, I don’t care who they are and how talented they are, what they produce and so on. Condoning this behaviour is wrong and I wish someone on set would film it and sue – well, everyone. The studio, the director, the producer, the whole nine yards. This is abuse and there is no excuse for it. Can you imagine your boss treating you like that?

    • Snazzy says:

I had a boss like that once – he used to throw things at me in my office and everything. I would burst into tears every time. After a while, the rest of the staff would physically form a blockade whenever he tried to come see me – it was insanity. He has apologized many times since then, but I have always told him straight up that I will never work with him again, and that he needs help. It is a terrible thing to go through.

      • Ginger says:

That’s awful Snazzy. I’m sorry you had to go through that. I’ve only had to deal with an abusive co-worker and that was bad enough. I was the only one that actually stood up to her and I was lucky I didn’t get written up. I think her reputation was the only reason I didn’t get into trouble because I was defending myself. It is awful to have to work with someone who can’t control themselves and basically walk all over the rules.

      • INeedANap says:

When your coworkers need to physically intercede on your behalf, that a$$hole should have at least been fired, or had the cops called on him. How the heck did he retain his job?

I too had a boss throw his keyboard at me (wireless). I grabbed it and threw it right back. He never did that ish with me again, but I’m kind of a nasty b!tch.

      • Lama Bean says:

Snazzy, I’m sorry to hear you went through that. I had a boss who played terrible mind games with me, but never got physical. How is it possible he got away with that? If anything the company would want to get rid of that liability. Are you in a different country where laws for this don’t exist?

      • Joy says:

I’m sorry that happened to you. Did he ever say WHY he acted that way? You’re a better person that me. I would have returned the violence in kind.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Me, too, Snazzy. I’ve had three bosses with serious anger management issues. One of them threw a file at me because I brought it to him since he asked me to bring it to him. In my experience, if they are small fry, they will be disciplined and if they are big rainmakers they will get away with it. I was lucky to have an in demand job, so in two cases, I just quit and got another job, because it wasn’t worth it to me, and the file thrower was fired because he basically cracked up. I agree with vauvert that people should just refuse to work with him, but since he’s successful, they won’t.

      • Snazzy says:

@Lama Bean – I was working with Doctors Without Borders at the time, in a country in the middle of civil war. So no laws or anything of the kind. It was my first posting with them, and I wanted to show that I was “tough enough” to do the work, you know what I mean? Translation is that I took it for a while. I was lucky, I had an amazing supervisor at my European HQ who stepped in for me and had a few words with him, and the rest of the staff was amazing too. He hasn’t worked with them since I don’t think – or one small posting in the middle of nowhere. He’s with the UN now – they can keep him 😀

@Joy – Believe or not he said that he had high expectations of me so when I made a mistake or did something he didn’t like it would piss him off, he thought he was pushing me to do better. He did admit (many years later) that he had a temper and that he was sorry.

@GNAT I’m sorry you went through that too! You did the right thing to walk away.

@INeedANap – no cops to call! Not where we were.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Wow, Snazzy, I knew you were really cool, but you worked with Doctors Without Borders? That is so admirable!

      • Snazzy says:

        Thanks GNAT ☺️

      • FLORC says:

        Snazzy
So, he was a doctor… I can see that. Working with Doctors too and they can throw tantrums that would put a spoiled 4 year old to shame.
It’s really scary to witness that in a work environment. I can’t even imagine being the one the anger and threat of physical harm is directed at.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Snazzy, I am so sorry you had to experience that! It is amazing that you work with Doctors Without Borders. I am incredibly impressed.

  6. tifzlan says:

Ew why does this guy still have a job? Watching that video of him calling Lily Tomlin all sorts of derogatory names and throwing things around made me cringe. He seems like an awful, awful person.

    • Nessa says:

Seriously! This man has rage issues… Legit psycho. How can this man still get directing gigs?? If that were a woman, she would have been shunned for life.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I actually did work for a woman who was like that. Constant mind games by people like that show a very different face to those who pay them.

    • Bridget says:

David O Russel almost lost his entire career over his bad behavior – that video with Lily Tomlin is about a decade old, and his movie after that couldn’t even be finished because he lost his funding. The only reason why he got a second chance with The Fighter was because he already knew Wahlberg and they were having a tough time getting that movie together. Russel has supposedly gotten his act together *for him* but something he’s doing must clearly be working considering the success of SLP, The Fighter, and American Hustle. He’s already nearly lost his career once, hopefully he’s learned his lesson.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I found it really disturbing how the crew just quietly leaves him alone with Lily. Even one woman gets hit with the objects he throws off of the table, she just opens the door and walks away. Then more crew leaves.

What if he started hitting Lily? Or choking her? He was already throwing things in her direction! No one would be there to stop him, as they were all enabling his violent behavior. I know their jobs/careers were on the line, but it was still very chilling.

      • Luce says:

He is absolutely always 100% worse to the crew than he is to the actors, but he is not all that different from several other directors. This kind of behavior is actually fairly common on film sets, which are already rather erratic, so while it seems bizarre in the context of an office, it isn’t as much in such an emotionally charged atmosphere. This probably happens often on this set, but Harvey, no doubt, leaked this due to David not bowing to his majesty. Not to excuse David, who is a first rate asshole.

  7. Senaber says:

I hate when people excuse abuse as “creativity.” This guy is such an ahole. Didn’t george cClooney give him a beat-down during their argument? It was over some extras, wasn’t it?

    • Tiffany says:

Yep. He put him in a headlock and told him to knock it off. Clooney never minced words when it came to Russell. For all of GC’s personal life faults he has a very good reputation on movie sets.

The thing is Douche Russell career was hanging on by a thread and the Tomlin incident really was the nail in the coffin. But guess what, there was another douchenozzle him met on the set of Three Kings and became friends. This douchenozzle is a power player in Hollywood and has some stupid loyalty to Douche Russell and fought tooth and nail to have him direct ‘The Fighter’ because the studios would not touch him. That douchenozzle, Marky Mark. That clown saved Russell’s career. Granted, after a few hits, people were giving him another chance, but Marky was the one to relight the fire.

      • Luce says:

Actually, the headlock is ANOTHER David-is-a-lunatic story. He put Chris Nolan in a headlock at an industry event because Jude Law dropped out of I Heart Huckabees (the one where he went psycho on Lily Tomlin) to work on Memento. David puts Chris Nolan in a headlock and tells him he needs to show support for his fellow filmmaker who needs the money and give up Jude Law, who did end up working on I Heart Huckabees.

George Clooney came to the defense of film crew on set and David headbutted him, which made Clooney in turn punch him in the throat.

David is an emotional wreck. He inserts himself directly in every scene so much that his DPs have trouble filming w/o having to edit him out. EVERY scene, no matter how intense or intimate or whatever. I always look at his films and think about how he is right there out of the frame or hiding somewhere in it, and it always takes me out of the film.

        Not a fan.

  8. Talie says:

Amy Adams has made sly comments about working with him too. Not nice.

    • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

According to some emails from Sony gate, DOR was so mean with her during American Hustle filming than Christian Bale had to defend her

      • oneshot says:

you know it has to be bad when Christian Bale of all people is the one stepping in to tell the asshole he went too far.

      • FLORC says:

        Oneshot
Bale is actually very nice and polite to those around him. His charity work, donations, calling up sick kids when he was Batman. He can be up his own rear sometimes, but he’s got a good heart and uses it.

That recording of him ranting has since been addressed, but got little coverage because everyone want to hear the bad stuff. Not the corrections made from it.

      • Luce says:

Bale is a very standup guy. That situation, which was one situation, had a lot of other dynamics in it. It sucks that so many people choose to focus on that one incident when things like that happen on nearly every set, but those doing the ranting are clever enough to remove their mics before doing so. He is really a quiet person who sticks to himself on set and sadly since one event, he is a associated with jerks like David, who has a repeated history of this, and he isn’t the only one.

  9. Mia4S says:

You forgot the accusation that he groped his transgendered niece’s breasts because he wanted to see what they felt like.

It would be a pleasure to see this guy crash and burn.

  10. flo says:

    they deserve each other

    • Sally J. Freedman says:

Why exactly are you saying Jennifer deserves him?

      • flo says:

Right now, she has all the opportunities in the world. She can choose any director out there. Nobody knows if she will have a moment like this again, a moment in which she has total control of her career and can predict her next 5/10 years with enough projects to guarantee one of the most respected careers out there. Yet she chooses to work with him because he gave her an Oscar.
My point is that she deserves him because she KNOWS 100% what she’s getting into. My bet is that she works with him (like most actors, lbr) because of the accolades. She’s not even thinking about enjoying the process, but enjoying the status that comes with pairing up with an acclaim director like Russell.
Lainey said something very interesting about this move. She said Jennifer’s buying another year on top by making this film and, right now, she’s suffering the consequences.

      • Bridget says:

Supposedly he’d cleaned up his act, but what’ll be telling is whether or not Lawrence signs on for another movie after this.

    • Ashley says:

Choice or no choice no one deserves to be abused. That’s victim blaming

    • Dubois says:

She no doubt went into it with open eyes. Her career – her choice. It must be worth it for her – not that she deserves the abuse – but honestly it will likely be a good career move. And like you say she is 24, she has to strike while the iron is hot. Look what happens to women over 40. I don’t blame her for choosing to work with him again. He does good things for her career, which at this point is her priority.

      • Kitten says:

I 100% agree with every word you said. People are making it seem like she’s some innocent victim, but really she’s a shrewd and calculating, career-driven actress.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Dubois, I like how you phrased the situation. I feel like things get understandably sensitive when people use the word “deserve” about a relationship with an abusive person.

      • Katrina says:

It’s like Emma Stone, Blanchett, Phoenix, Johanson that work with Allen. And Portman that defends him. Hollywood doesn’t care

  11. Joanne says:

Even Stanley kubrick was an asshole on set. Hollywood doesn’t care about this or Allen doesn’t keep to work

    • flo says:

But, you know, Stanley Kubrick was a freaking genius. This guy, on the other hand…

      • Joanne says:

Hence if a person is a genius is ok for you? If is ok for Kubric must be ok For Russel

      • flo says:

Russel is not a genius; Kubrick was. And he said that his treatment of Duvall was specific to get the performance out of her. Jack Nicholson mistreated her too in order to get the best out of her, yet nobody mentions that when the topic arises, it’s only Kubrick.

      • jinni says:

@Joanne: Exactly. I am so tired of people acting as if just because a person is gifted that means they can get away with treated everyone around them like crap. Like treating people with basic humanity is beneath them, because they are too brilliant to be held to normal human conventions of decency.

      • **sighs** says:

If you have to coax a good performance out of someone by being a complete @$$hole to them, then you aren’t a good director or a good screen partner. Acting is about trust, not abuse.

      • niliada says:

Kubrick never verbally or physically abused anybody. He just had too high standerds.

      • Kitten says:

Kubrick, Michael Bay, Von Trier, Fincher, Werner Hertzog, Francis Ford Coppola, Oliver Stone, James Cameron, Terrence Malik…all have been accused of being difficult to work with.

I mean look–directors are under a lot of stress, they have a vision of what they’re trying to create, and they need to battle with actors (who have their OWN vision of the character they’re portraying), studios, producers, casting agents and writers to get it done. Not to mention, the budget constraints, box office expectations, etc.

Truth is that directors are notoriously egotistical people who are trying to manage and handle the egos of all the people involved in the movie they’re making. In other words, a lot of stubborn, egocentric people swinging their metaphorical d*cks around, trying to assert their creative vison. I’m not saying that gives them a free pass to be ahole, but I can empathize with them in the sense that it’s a sh*t ton of pressure.

Ultimately, it’s the actor’s choice whether to work with a director or not. Myself? I think J Law has been very savvy in the roles she’s chosen up to this point.
I don’t blame her for wanting to work with DOR if she believes in the project.

    • Valois says:

Oh, I think they do care about it as soon as they become replaceable.

    • anon33 says:

I think Kubrick’s brand of asshole was far, far different than this POS. I’ve never heard of Kubrick getting violent with his actors. He definitely pushed them hard (per Shelley Duvall in The Shining, for one), but I’m pretty sure there was never violence.

    • Luce says:

Terrence Malick is one of the most gentle natured men in the business. The only reason anyone would complain of him being “difficult” is that he often shoots with no script and/or seeming direction and creates his film entirely in the editing room, where he then cuts a lot of actors out.

  12. Rachel says:

This probably isn’t uncommon. She worked with him twice before and knew what she signed up for.

  13. greenmonster says:

Have watched the video this morning and still can’t believe no onestood up for Lily Tomlin. No one tried to calm him down or just told him to shut up.

And him calling her childish while he is the one throwing a fit? Calling her every name in the book? It’s disgusting that he is treating people like this over and over again and still gets hired. Never thaught I would say something positive about George Clooney, but well done that he stood up to him. Esp. when Russell was mistreating extras.

  14. Hullubaloooo says:

    He is scum.

  15. GiGi says:

So, you guys know I was a ballet dancer. RAD trained, legit… the whole thing. And I’m old enough that I grew up at a time when dancers weren’t encouraged to stay in school, but rather to join ballet companies instead. This “style” of teaching/leading was very prominent back then. When you were basically brow beaten into submission by your instructors, choreographers & artistic directors. It’s just the way it was.

Fast forward to today – these tactics would be considered abusive! And yet great dancers are still being turned out and are still performing beautifully all over the world.

All this to say – it’s just not necessary, this kind of behaviour. It’s self-important BS. It’s demeaning. And you can still get great work out of actors without it.

    • tifzlan says:

Your story about growing up training as a ballet dancer reminds me of Whiplash. I feel like this very aggressive way of teaching breaks spirits more than encourages them. Of course, faults should be pointed out but to constantly berate someone for doing something wrong, however slight that mistake might be, is going too far, i think.

    • INeedANap says:

You are absolutely right — abusive “teaching” and “coaching” are all about the abuser, not results. You don’t need to break someone down to help them succeed, and anyone who thinks otherwise is just looking for a target.

    • Judy says:

This calls to mind that Academy member who said Whiplash was not believable because no one would tolerate that type of extreme abuse. Hah! David O Russel I that rant seems as abusive if not more so than the JK Simmons teacher. Lily Tomlin was verbally attacked and DOR got away with it. At least in the movie the teacher eventually got fired. Let’s see what will happen to Russell in hungry hungry Hollywood.

      • Bridget says:

Huckabees nearly destroyed Russell’s career, I don’t think I’d say he got away with it. The only reason why he’s been given a second chance was that he supposedly cleaned up his act – which doesn’t seem to have lasted.

      • niliada says:

Whiplash was a perfectly believable film . Teachers and bosses can be abusive like that to their students and employees.

    • PennyLane says:

Thank you! I completely agree, and also come from an older generation where the rationalization for this kind of appalling behavior was “Well, it makes you stronger”.

Sure it makes you stronger…at withstanding that kind of abuse. Nice circular logic there. How about we just get rid of the abuse and focus on acting like a bunch of trained professionals instead?

David O. Russell should be put on a short leash with a backup director for his next movie, and the moment he starts abusing people on-set, he gets replaced. Should take about ten minutes.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

So agree with you. They used to treat high school athletes that way sometimes, too, to make them “stronger.” I don’t believe that people who do that care one bit about the person they’re doing it to. They just use that to rationalize what they enjoy doing – bullying and abusing others.

    • Tiffany :) says:

      Well said, Gigi.

  16. Catelina says:

I have no clue why any actors choose to work with him, let alone multiple times. The thing i perhaps most respect about Clooney is how he has spoken publicly about how unacceptable his on set behavior is. More actors should follow suit.

    • jarelies says:

Just like how people want to work for Scott Rudin. Both are nasty people, but they get the actors/actresses their Oscar noms and wins. Gotta laugh at the Angie boards where they all thought Angie was so-well respected, powerful and liked by everyone. Scott Rudin pretty much told the truth about her and her ego. I hope J-law doesn’t get an inflated ego like how Angie has in the years to come.

      • vauvert says:

I am sorry but your comment confuses me… You are saying both Russell and Rudin are nasty…. Which I completely agree with, they sound like horrible people who most certainly should not be in charge of a garbage truck, never mind a movie set… But then you make a dig at Angie who came out of the Sony mess looking mature, professional and cool headed. Why are you bringing her into this? You may dislike her, but she IS respected and powerful, and even if other power players whisper behind her back, because nobody is universally loved, that does not change her position. Her ego had nothing to do with Rudin being a jerk, if he thought she should not do this or that the appropriate response would have been to have a meeting and discuss the issues, not send derogatory emails while pretending to agree with her. Immature and unprofessional…

      • Hazel says:

What has Angelina got to do with this?

      • Bridget says:

I dont know about you guys, but its nice to know that truly talented folks dont have people snark about them behind their backs.

Scott Rudin talks that way about everyone.

      • abby says:

Rudin also compared David Fincher to Hitler. I don’t see anyone making that into more than Rudin being an a$$. Why should Rudin’s comment about Jolie carry any more weight or truth? Rudin is an extremely talented producer and he makes great films but as a person he’s awful and that’s not some new revelation.

Hollywood is about making $$$$ and awards, not making friends. it’s all about the bottom line. Anyone looking to Hollywood for personal validation is in for a rude awakening. Jerks, pervs, whoever will always be welcome in Hollywood as long as they keep the $$$ and awards coming.
This is JLaw’s 3rd time working with Russell. She is no stranger to his behavior, whether in the past it was directed toward her or her costars (see Amy Adams). Not saying she deserves it, Not at all. No one does. But exposing herself to his abuse may be worth the risk to her, afterall, she got her BA Oscar and BSA nom in two of his films.
Anyway, hopefully the negative media attention will remind Russell of how close he came to losing it all, but I doubt that. Best hope imo is that the shoot is not long and JLaw can move on soon. And perhaps move onto other, less volatile directors.

      • niliada says:

@ vavuert. I think what is meant is despite the nastiness of people like David O’ Russell and Soctt Rudin, they help get the actors/actresses the Oscars they want. Any actor/actresses would work with them if they really were after the awards.
And Angelina isn’t as powerful or as well-liked as we all thought she was sorry. Sure she came out looking ‘professional’ and ‘mature’. but I think she probably wants to still work with him in the future too. She also was busy campaigning for Unbroken, which got nothing in the end. Cleopatra is still unknown whether its going to happen or not.

      • aaron says:

You must be a brangeloonie if you don’t think Jolie doesn’t have a big ego. She does. She and Brad both have big egos. Only her loons think she is a humble person. She expected a Best Director nom for Unbroken after her 2nd time directing a film, and didn’t bother promoting it anymore after the Oscars didn’t give her anything. She went behind Rudin’s back and was recruiting directors! An actor/actress isn’t hired for that. Only the producers and studios do that. She tried to stop Fincher from directing his film at the time and do Cleopatra for her.

      • lisa2 says:

        @kellybee
It is the new tactic.. you are right this has nothing to do with Angie.. but of course this poster has made it about her and Brad.. Just trying to get their hits to stick but do it in a subtle way. Because of course Scott Rudin’s comments are what “everyone” thinks of Angie.. LOL.

the need to make some random negative comment about her is too strong..

  17. kri says:

Once again, he’s a crazed, rage-filled pus monster. But the phrase “he threw Harvey Weinstein of fthe set” warmed my tundra-esque heart. I can’t stand Russell, but I really can’t stand HW. Too bad they didn’t tear off each other’s clothes and oil up in a kiddie pool. Now that would be very “buddhist”.

    • Darya says:

@kri, this is first CB article I’ve read this morning and I can already declare you today’s winner of the Internet!

  18. jarelies says:

J-Law is so wrong for Dior. I get Natalie Portman, I get Marion Cotillard, I get Charlize Theron as the faces for the brand but not her. She looks bad in every single one of their ads. She looks very manly compared to those others. Please, get her another better suited brand. Dior is not for her.

    • spaniard says:

Sorry I don’t agree with that. I think that all the women you mentioned are beautiful and so is JLaw . She doesn’t look manly but chic and kind of ethereal in these ads.

You can like her or not because of her, let’s say, special personality (I find her adorable sometimes and super silly at others) but she is a hell of a stunner.

    • MP says:

She looks dead or high in these pictures. No expression on her face just a blank stare.
These really don’t make me want to buy the products although the skirt looks good.

    • lucy2 says:

I don’t think she looks “manly” at all, I think she’s quite pretty, but I agree that Dior isn’t a great pairing for her. She seems more suited to something like Calvin Klein, or maybe a younger, up and coming brand.

    • oneshot says:

She’s far from “manly” looking, she is a pretty girl and looks positively ethereal when shot right (see her second Dior campaign).

but I do agree that Dior was a bit too sophisticated for her age and image. It’s not as bad as the Blake Lively/Chanel mismatch (now that was downmarket if I ever saw it. In contrast, Jlaw had an Oscar nomination under her belt before Dior happened – gives her image more substance).

I agree with lucy2 that she would have been a better fit for a younger, cooler brand – she’d have made a great kooky model for Marc Jacobs.

    • Elly says:

Jennifer is pretty but she is no model. She has one facial expression in every Dior campaign so far: dead eyed high looking (like MP said).

  19. Ginger says:

As someone who practices Tibetan Buddhism I have to say I’m slightly offended by his antics. However, I can’t stay mad because he obviously has serious mental problems. And as for the BTS gossip…what a mess! How does anything get done in Hollywood?

  20. INeedANap says:

Poor JLaw. I realize that professionalism isn’t as sacred a thing in the entertainment world, but there are lines that must be drawn, and this psycho needs to be in a padded room.

  21. L says:

Not a surprise-he’s always been a jerk. And he might love JLaw now (hence why he continues to insist on casting her in roles she’s 15-20 years to young for)-but when the guy turns on her as he eventually will it is going to be ugly. Really really ugly.

    • Anne says:

Joy Mangano had child when she was in her 20s. Lawrence isn’t too young for this

      • L says:

Except the movie starts when she was 33 and right after her divorce. So a decade to old. And jlaw as a single mom at 33 with 3 kids? She’s a fantastic actress, but no-she’s a total miscast.

The original character in Silver Linings was a widow in her 40’s. O’Russell seems to want to cast her in everything whether she’s a good fit or not.

      • charlie says:

She is a decent actress, not fantastic.

      • Anne says:

@L other actresses plays mother at 20s like Larson for example. And what about 20s that plays teens at high school?

      • oneshot says:

20something actors playing teens is a thing that usually happens because labour laws make it difficult to use most actual teens in a role. That’s a lot different from casting a woman a decade too young in the role of a character who was in her 30s.

      • Gemma says:

@oneshot and why child actors can work? Directors choce actors that are good and don’t think about age. It’s call acting

  22. sputnik says:

david o russell may well be an asshole, but he’s also got bipolar disorder. he’s discussed his struggle and how it informed his making silver linings playbook. calling a bipolar person unhinged is pretty gross.

    • Ashley says:

That’s unfortunate but he needs to make sure he has it under control. As a therapist I tell my clients your disorder is not license to behave in any manner. Bipolar can be very difficult to stabilize, hope he has support in dealing with it.

    • Faith says:

As someone with bipolar it doesn’t mean you get a pass for being a dick. Theres a fine line between doing dickish things because your unwell and you just being a general knob.

    • Kason says:

I know someone with bipolar disorder who went to jail for an outburst which involved throwing things at people. Having a mental disorder is no excuse for the ordinary Joe if you have an outburst. The same thing should have happened to David O Russell. But, nope. Hollywood allows men to be bullies and psychos, like Scott Rudin, Harvey Weinstein, and him. If a woman behaves uppity in any way, she’s out. But for the men, it’s a tyrant’s paradise.

    • PennyLane says:

Then he needs to get medicated and stay on his medication.

(A lot of people with BPD go off their meds after awhile, in part because the medication evens out your emotional swings – which means you lose the highs as well as the lows.)

    • lucy2 says:

David’s son has bi-polar disorder, not David himself.

  23. feebee says:

He’s sounds like a real peach.

I can understand why the studio exec denied crying but I wish it wasn’t such a taboo… I mean okay, I don’t think boohoo crying at work is necessarily cool but sometimes it’s a genuine and natural reaction or result of frustration/anger/shock to what is an unbelievable situation, like going to bat for someone and being screamed at by an unhinged idiot. Some people want to smack something, some people want to cry, not everyone can ignore the adrenaline and stand stead fast in the face of such abuse.

He’s abusing his position and sounds like a total bully. I wonder if he’s ever screamed like that at Christian Bale? That could be a popcorn worthy event.

    • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

During The Fighter filming,DOR was super nice and professional ( according to many extras on IMDB) but during American Hustle,DOR again was lunatic and he’s so mean with Amy Adams that Bale had to intervene .According to Ann Thompson, the filming was difficult between Bale and DOR because of his behavior on the set and Bale doesn’t want to work with DOR anymore

      • lucy2 says:

I too was definitely under the impression that he was much more well behaved during the Fighter, and I’d assume Silver Linings. It’s a shame he backslid into assholery again so soon.
I actually like his films quite a bit, and he has gotten some great performances out of the actors in them, but this type of behavior is not acceptable. That sort of abuse is not acceptable anywhere, but especially not in a professional setting.

    • Mia4S says:

Of course he wouldn’t go at Bale. Bale’s bigger and stronger, Russell wouldn’t dare. I have no doubt that the story of Bale having to deliver the smack down on Russell to defend Amy Adams is true (that was from Sony Hack emails, not a tabloid) and it’s just gross. I mean, bravo Christian, but the fact that he even had to do it is just gross!

    • Darya says:

@feebee, you are exactly right! Some people ‘tremble with rage’, I cry. And it’s not because I’m scared or sad, it’s because I’ve realized I cannot murder the person I’m furious at without dire consequences for me. the people close to me know the signs and back away for their own safety. Those with a death wish ask me, “why are you crying?”

Tears are not a sign of weakness.

      • I Choose Me says:

This! When I’m at my angriest, I cry. But I keep a very tight leash on my temper because I know that when I do go off it’s gonna be NASTY.

  24. Beth says:

LOL at Harvey turning up unannounced to “say hi” to JLaw. Did he plant this shit? I want to see a Harvey vs David O Russell bitchfight! 😀

Anyway, O Russell has had this reputation for ages. His films do well and get Oscar acting nominations, so unfortunately actors and actresses would continue to work with him.

  25. Veronica says:

Women are “difficult” and they get tossed off the film. Men are histrionic douchebags and receive Oscars.

I just can’t with this world sometimes.

  26. Thinker says:

Does anyone else think it odd that Harvey Weinstein was just stopping by?

…. I mean the set is in Boston. No offense to Boston, but it’s not exactly where you’d be heading right now for a vacation. It’s freezing. Plus, Harvey was obviously at the Oscars this week in LA, so it’s really not like he was just in the neighborhood.

Either Harvey is a huge creep on J.Law to show up uninvited, or he’s producing this film and heard that the set was a mess, flew out specifically to address the problem and was shut out which leads to this leaked story.

    • Mia4S says:

Harvey’s not producing. I cannot imagine Russell made a friend though. Harvey will be gunning to derail this movie come awards season…I kind of hope he does? Boy is that a case of the lesser of two evils! :-/

Russell apparently also got into it with a Fox exec. Ugly stuff.

    • Dońt kill me i'm french says:

I’m for the mess filming theory because American Hustle yet was a mess filming ( contrary to The Fighter filming)

    • Anne says:

This movie isn’t Weinstein. It’s Fox. Maybe Wienstein had some projects to propose to Lawrence

      • Thinker says:

Maybe… But wouldn’t he do that through her agent or manager? Even a phone call/ Skype session would suffice for a business meeting. Flying clear across the country, into frigid stormy weather conditions, without even a hall pass for entry onto the set, it seems above and beyond to me. In fact – it’s downright creepy.

      • Loreai says:

        @Thinker
When you’re the one of the biggest (if not the biggest) movie star of the world you have everybody around you

  27. Ice Queen says:

She is pretty, but I wish they put models on ads and campaigns. It’s their job to help advertise clothes and there are so many of them. Actors and actresses seem to take over everything. They are designers, models, actors/actresses, singers. I know, I know-nothing wrong with doing more things than one, especially when you’re good at those things. I just sometimes feel sorry for some models…

  28. Bridget says:

I disagree that Russell has “gotten away” with his past bad behavior. He was such a disaster to work with on Huckabee’s that his career new died – his next movie lost funding midway through and the ONLY reason why he got a shot with The Fighter years later was because he had a relationship with Marky Mark. He’s supposedly had to clean up his act (to an extent) but I’m guessing that the folks that sign up to work with him do so knowing that they cant be thin skinned.

    • Thinker says:

Ew Marky Mark. I guess d-bags have to stick together.

      • Bridget says:

Yep. They met on set of the movie that Russell treated a crew member so badly that Clooney and he got into a wrestling match. Of course Marky Mark didnt have a problem with him though.

Sounds like Russell is slipping back into bad habits. He better hope this movie pans out because he could easily be sent back to Purgatory.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Wahlberg pulled out of Silver Linings Playbook so they aren’t sticking together any more

      • Bridget says:

@lilacflowers: Russell dumped Wahlberg from that one to get someone cheaper. Way to burn that bridge!

  29. Cindy says:

I really love that black purse with the rose on it.I have been watching mad men on Netflix and I am sort of in love with those boxy stiff purses that clicked open. Sorry off topic. Russell sounds like a psycho.

    • Nat says:

Is it a rose? I thought it looked like the D I O R letters in different sizes, all one on top of the other.

  30. Darya says:

Clooney calling out Russell on his behavior is one of the reasons George will have my heart forever. At the time, George was not the power Hollywood player he is today, he was still a ‘tv actor’ trying to become a movie star and his success was not a sure thing. Getting cast in a David O. Russell film was a big deal for him at the time. For him to not only confront Russell to his face and then speak publicly about it was a huge risk and some think it slowed his career trajectory for a time.

  31. **sighs** says:

The only way his career is going to take a hit now is if someone fairly powerful (like a JLaw) just walks off the set and says I won’t do your movie, you’re an @$$hole, and I have no problems telling people about it.

  32. Cora says:

The fight between Clooney and O. Russell wasn’t just verbal, it got physical. The two men hated each other for years afterwards. Also, it is largely believed that Clooney is the one who leaked the Lily Tomlin footage to the press.

  33. Zombie Shortcake says:

Don’t forget the time he felt his 19 year old transgender niece’s implants at the gym. He had some ‘splainin to do over that.

  34. I Choose Me says:

I love the black and red purse as well as the yellow one. I kinda dig the sweater too. She looks really good in these ads. More relaxed, less shopped than usual.

  35. Coco says:

This guy is an asshole and his movies are not that good.

  36. KatyD says:

Why would she work with him again? Why give him more opportunities? Is the fame and those awards worth that? Nevermind…

  37. Jag says:

He should’ve been arrested a long time ago. Horrible man.

  38. Kiyoshigirl says:

The guy’s a jerk, and his behavior is unacceptable, but he’s just one among hundreds of talented people in that industry who get away with this type of behavior. I found it interesting that after I watched the video link in Bedhead’s post, the next video in the loop was one of Lily Tomlin throwing a f&ck filled fit while filming with Dustin Hoffman and another famous actress who’s name escapes me. Emotions run high on sets and talent often utilizes those emotions to create an end product that is raw and seemingly authentic. I get a kick out of watching Hollywood talent losing it when they’re supposed to be working. I think it exposes a lot about the person who’s freaking out. For that short period of time they’re not playing a part, they’re authentic and real, displaying their deepest insecurities, narcissism, dependency, etc.

By the way, must each and every comment I make go through moderation? Will this go on in perpetuity?

  39. DTX says:

I once dated a guy who behaved like that. He was completely gorgeous and charasmatic 99% of the time, hardly ever got mad. I even lectured him for letting people take advantage of his friendship (he was an incredible friend to nearly everyone) but holy hell @ the rare few times he’d actually had enough frustration build up. Everything around him would be broken in seconds, holes punched in the wall, knuckles bleeding with him not even noticing, heavy animalistic panting, hollering just like DOR. Seriously, the Lily video was straight up déjà vu. He crept that up on me somehow & I kinda didn’t freak out after a while (I was with him several years) although I was cautious and scared…until he did it in front of a child (his relative). I saw how that poor baby began to shake and cry with genuine terror & I grew so angry and disgusted at him (& myself for taking it) that I just quickly picked up the child and got away. I left him and for the majority of people that had never known that side of him (they probably couldn’t even fathom it) I was “nuts” for leaving him. Neither of us gave details about it but he’s always told everyone that he was 100% at fault and that I was an angel to him. That’s all over now & I’m completely crazy about my husband but I still feel weird & slightly confused about that whole thing.

I’m not saying DOR is like that b/c the guy I knew would probably never do that to his staff b/c this only happened around people who were super close to him, like me and his immediate family. I think I only excused him because I was so attached to him, so I’d probably call the police if my boss did that (cause I don’t love your @ss!) Ughhh, what a terrible thing to remember…..I need a glass of wine now! Is it too early?!? Lol

  40. Hotpockets says:

Can I be honest, I loathed Silver Linings Playbook and fell asleep during American Hustle. David O Russell is hugely overrated and seems to have a god like complex. I will never understand why people raved about SLP.

  41. The Original Mia says:

She knows how badly he treated Amy Adams and she still signed up with him. She’s an Oscar winner and in 2 successful franchises. At some point, she can tell him to go to hell and not star in his films, but she must be okay with his level of abuse.

  42. Nancy says:

Wow! If that guy did that in most offices, security would have escorted him out of that building. I’m always amazed at the BS famous people get away with.

  43. Elly says:

JLaw via her official facebook fansite:
‘Hey guys! It’s Jen! I know I don’t go on here a lot because I can barely work email but there’s been a terrible rumor going around the last 24 hours so I wanted to clear it up.
David O. Russell is one of my closest friends and we have an amazing collaborative working relationship. I adore this man and he does not deserve this tabloid malarkey.’

Jennifer is one of Weinstein´s girls and she adores David O. Russel.
Shamed be he who thinks evil of it
