Marvel isn’t sending Tom Hiddleston or anyone else to Comic-Con this year

The only time I ever really cared about Marvel’s presence at the annual San Diego Comic-Con was the year Tom Hiddleston arrived in his Loki get-up and told all the nerds to quake before his thunder (I might be paraphrasing, but not by much). That was 2013. Tommy really out-did himself and after that, Marvel was all “Damn, what can we do to top that?” The answer is… not much. James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, said as much in a recent Q&A session online.

The biggest reveal from the Facebook interaction came from an answer to what seemed to be a really straight question: “Are you going to comic con this year?” Seems like an easy question to answer, if it needed answering at all. Gunn could be hard at work on Guardians of the Galaxy 2 or he could join Marvel for what, in San Diego years past, have been large hyped Marvel events.

But here’s what Gunn said: “I’m not sure. Marvel isn’t going so I’m not sure I will either.”

[From Geek.com]

I guess it makes sense? Marvel will have already blown their proverbial wad during the promotional trail for Age of Ultron throughout April and May, and Comic-Con will be in July. You know what else Marvel has coming out in July? Ant-Man. So there will be no Ant-Man at Comic-Con? Huh. I guess I have to give it Marvel – they’re in such a position of strength, they literally don’t even have to show up and all of the comic-book people will still make all of the Marvel films huge hits.

And since I’m using photos of Tommy, might as well add this – Tom Hiddleston has narrated a children’s adaptation of Henry V for British schoolkids. The film will be shown during Shakespeare Week (next week). Hiddleston said: “With WillShake, Joe Talbot and Emily Blacksell have achieved something wonderful. They have completely reimagined the possibilities for children and their first contact with Shakespeare. Their Henry V film is fresh, dynamic and so lovingly crafted that it’s impossible not to stand up for it. Bravo.”

  1. GlimmerBunny says:

I think this is a mistake. It makes Marvel seem over-confident and arrogant. We’ll see how “Ant-man” does at the box office…

    • jammypants says:

Not really. To me, they’re saving money. These things are very expensive and they really do have nothing to promote. They blew their load when they had their own “con” and released all their Phase 3 titles.

    • Bridget says:

Ant Man’s promotion will already be mostly done by the time Comic Con comes around. If it’s a dud, it won’t be because they skipped San Diego Comic Con (which is essentially just one giant movie/tv commercial anyhow).

  2. GiGi says:

I don’t think this will end well… There are so many tastemakers at Comic-Con, I can’t believe they’re not doing a panel, or a round tables or anything. It seems like a bad move.

    • Algernon says:

There are no tastemakers at Comic Con. Industry analysis over the last ten years has proven again and again that big showings at SDCC do not translate to box office dollars. The expense of sending people to SDCC has spiralled out of control and I think we’ll be seeing more and more drawing back over the next few years. All you’re doing at SDCC is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to preach to the choir, when you should be spending that money to sway the undecided and casual fans to buy into your movie. Those people don’t go to or care about SDCC, so it’s a complete waste of time and money from a marketing standpoint. Marvel has realized this (probably because of the success of their self-produced “fan event” last fall), and they’re checking out. I’m sure they’ll be back in the future, but the Avengers didn’t go to SDCC in 2011 and that movie ended up doing fine.

      • MtnRunner says:

That’s interesting. As tight as Marvel is with their cash perhaps they’re big enough to do their own events. I’d still expect them there for Strange with a kick ass trailer next year.

      • Bridget says:

Agreed, Algernon. SDCC is just about building “buzz” among the comic book set and is actually a notoriously bad way to gauge larger audience response. Remember when the SDCC crowd went crazy for that terrible Zak Snyder movie, Sucker Punch?

      • Algernon says:

        @ MtnRunner

I wonder if we will begin to see a pattern where they go to SDCC every other year, alternating with D23. That seems the logical compromise to keep the Mouse House happy by participating in D23 (they had kind of a clusterwhoops in 2013 when they did SDCC and D23 with Winter Soldier, the D23 people weren’t happy they showed the same footage because then it wasn’t exclusive, and the cross over between D23 attendees and SDCC is not insignificant, so it was anti-climactic to the audience as well).

        @Bridget

At this point, Marvel doesn’t need any more buzz. And it’s gotten to the point with SDCC that if you’re not able to make a huge announcement, fans are disappointed, which isn’t a fair expectation because you might not always have a big announcement ready. (Which is what happened to them last year.)

      • Bridget says:

The funny part is that SDCC has been so taken over by the movie and tv folk that actual fans can’t get tickets anymore. Marvel can generate the same excitment whatever the platform they use for their announcements.

  3. Lilacflowers says:

Has Marvel itself said that it isn’t going to SDCC? I agree that they really can’t top the Loki performance, Feige himself pretty much admitted that at the time, saying the other actors on his payroll didn’t have the training or experience to pull something like that off, and they didn’t try last year. They just had panels but that is what most of the studios do. There is a Disney event a few weeks later and Marvel might be saving itself for that but it seems strange to have no presence at SDCC.

Really looking forward to seeing Will Shakes Henry V. The trailer is adorable.

  4. InvaderTak says:

Not a good idea Marvel. I think they’ll backtrack quick.

Edit @lilacflowers: they better get on it. Nerd rage is no joke.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Marvel itself hasn’t said anything about it.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Nerd rage! Exactly. People already have their tickets, right? Or have registered for tickets or something? They won’t be happy if one of the biggest presenters is a no-show.

      • iheartjacksparrow says:

Comic Con sold out in one hour the day tickets went on sale.

      • Bridget says:

Its Marvel Movies that’s bailing, not Marvel Comics. Out of 130,000 attendees, only a tiny fraction would even get in to the hall to see a panel anyhow. Some will complain, but its really not that big of a deal.

    • Bridget says:

Nerd rage means almost nothing – they’ll complain online but still buy the product. Prime example: George Lucas and his tinkering of Star Wars. They may have hated it, but they still bought every iteration.

And very few individuals actually get in to see the panels. In order to do so, you have to wait for hours (if not days) in line, missing the rest of the Con and other panels. These fancy events may be headliners for the Con, but for the most part the “nerd” attendees are there for entirely different events. Now, if none of the Marvel comics were being signed and sold, and no one was doing meet and greets and photos (the actual Avengers never do that) then it would be a different story.

  5. Froop says:

He’ll be there with Crimson Peak though, won’t he? I don’t care about Marvel but I’m surprised they’re not going.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Crimson Peak and Skull Island. GDT promised at last SDCC that he would return with Tom this year, so it must be in his Legendary contract.

    • MtnRunner says:

Marvel won’t top the 2013 Hall H show for a good long while. But I’d be surprised that they wouldn’t be doing something at SDCC. I’m more interested in what Tom’s promoting anyway.

Skull Island? Cool. I wasn’t expecting anything on that this year.

Can’t wait to watch Will Shakes with the kiddos. Looks adorable.

    • icerose says:

Interview from What’s on Awards re Skull island, Crimson Peak and I saw the Light

    • icerose says:

just throwing this in-Tom’s heart felt thank you to cast and crew for the What’s on Award for Coriolanus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0KD9Lp3sW8

  6. A Tommy story first thing in the morning is a beautiful way to start the day. Marvel will have something there for Ant-Man, they’ll have to do something to keep the momentum going after the Avengers juggernaut rolls through this summer.

  7. Lilacflowers says:

Here is a link to information about and a trailer for the children’s Henry V project. The trailer is really cool and I can’t wait to see the film.
    https://www.digitaltheatreplus.com/news/bringing-the-bard-bang-up-to-date

    • 'P'enny says:

      Thats fab! i love it.

I remember someone tweeted he was seen in Northumberland outside someone’s School in January but there were a few tweets on Tumblr saying, ‘don’t believe it’ well guess its true.

Tom H, your a wee angel. Cant wait to hear your narration on it.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I hope he joins in on the Watch-along-thon thing or whatever it is they are doing Tuesday. That will give the kids a thrill.

  8. Lindy79 says:

I’d be shocked if they didn’t have something. I feel Ant Man will need a bit of help, and if Benny wasn’t busy I think they’d have had him over there to start the hype up for Dr. Strange.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Marvel has made it clear that they have little concern over whether its actors are “busy”. They flew the entire Guardians of Galaxy cast over for a five minute panel during the middle of filming. Kat Dennings was committed to filming Two Broke Girls when they were shooting TDW and they had her flying all over the place. They are under contract and they go where Marvel wants or they’re gone.

      • Lindy79 says:

True, so we might still see Benny Boy there.
(lets hope he’s less snarky and more Marvel PR friendly by then)

      • An says:

Depends on their individual contract terms.

Ant Man probably could have used a bump.

    • MtnRunner says:

Agree Lindy. The more I think about it, the more ridiculous it sounds that they wouldn’t be promoting Ant man at least.

Giving fans a sneak peek of Strange would be smart. But with Hamlet and newborn, I wonder if Ben can leave PissyBatch at home.

      • Green Girl says:

I remember those early days of having a newborn. If someone made me take a flight around the world at that time – even if the trip were strictly a work event – I would have been aaaaaaaaall over it. So he might be refreshed, actually!

      • MtnRunner says:

You have a point, Green Eyes. He may be looking for an escape! I didn’t think of that since my kids were good sleepers. It wasn’t a big deal for me.

Besides, my huz got up in the middle of the night and gave them a bottle so I had a solid 5+ hrs in those early weeks. Made all the difference in the world to my mood!

  9. Birdie says:

They really made an Ant-Man movie?

  10. Lilacflowers says:

Can I just say that the Loki costume fascinates me? Just look at that thing, yes, I’m talking about the clothing, not just the man in it, although he is rather fascinating too. But the details on that coat and tunic, which they made longer because of the issues they had with the man in the costume. What is all that medal supposed to represent and can we get a closer look of the engravings and stuff? And at the man in the costume.

    • MtnRunner says:

There is a lot of interesting detail in it. Tom and leather go together like eggs and bacon. But it has amused me that Loki is what so many ladies find hot. I think he’s hotter in his Prince Hal and Coriolanus get up. Now those costumes do something to me.

    • M.A.F. says:

They re-did all the costumes for the Thor characters. In the first movie the costumes looked sort of cheap.

      • Lilacflowers says:

So far, they have had different costumes for each film. On the TDW commentary, Feige points out changes to some of the costumes.

    • Bea says:

Ugh right in the solar plexus. His kiddos.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      Where? On the sleeves?

    • 'P'enny says:

I’ve always been impressed with the TDW costume, i prefer the smaller shoulders and the longer line frock waistcoat. I love to see it modelled in pieces. I think online somewhere, is a small extract from TDW book about the design of the costume. But, the engravings do mean something too.

I am really partial to the Thor all black costume too, i like who the black coat tail trails behind.

  11. The Original Mia says:

They aren’t going. There’s no need. I’m fine with that. AoU will be 2 months old by the time CC comes around and Ant Man will have been released. No need to hype what’s already passed.

  12. Jag says:

I clicked on this because I love seeing Hiddles as Loki! It did not disappoint. 🙂

  13. Gracie says:

Blimey, not Friday we are getting a Hiddles post? Wait, this is not a Hiddles post? It’s just him mentioned? Okay, I see.

I don’t know about you guys. But I am getting fantasy/super hero/alien god/whatever else fatigue from all the studios bombarding us one film after another. Let’s face it. Aren’t they more or less tell the same tale? People/Different specimens with superpowers can have weaknesses and very human problems too, and in the end they manage to triumph still relying on the power they already had since the beginning of the film. Don’t get wrong. I’d probably still see some of those films in cinema, or at least on DVD once it’s out. But they are… erm, so formulated.

Second @ Lilacflowers upthread, wanna see Will Shakes Henry V and wanna see more of the costume and the man. 😉

  14. Bea says:

Makes sense. Disney is doing its own showcase around the same time as Comic-Con. Marvel belongs to Disney.

    • bettyrose says:

In Anaheim? Theoretically one could get a hotel room partway between and commute to both events. Nerds , I mean, of the hardcore variety.

      • Algernon says:

D23 is a month after San Diego Comic Con, so you couldn’t commute between them.

      • Bea says:

Yup, plus both Avengers and AntMan will be out by that time so they don’t have anything to promote.

    • Allegra says:

About Disney, they just release another trailer from the movie Inside Out.
      And it looks great.
To be honest, this animated film seems to be more interesting than the movies coming out this year by Marvel. At least the plot is something different and unique!

  15. Algernon says:

This year is Disney’s in-house fan convention, D23. They hold it every other year, and I’m sure that whether Marvel ends up skipping SDCC entirely or not, they’ll do a big presentation at D23 later in the year. Also, Marvel proved last year that they can produce their own fan events. I’ll be interested to see if they ever do another “Marvel day” like they did last year.

    • browniecakes says:

Got my D23 tickets already. I went in 2013 to see Hiddleston on stage promoting Thor TDW along with Hopkins and Portman. Jolie was there for Maleficent. Evans for Captain America with Mackie and Stan. They showed the same exclusive trailers that Comic Con shows. At the end, Richard Sherman, who wrote the songs with his brother for Mary Poppins and other Disney musicals led a sing along to Let’s Go Fly a Kite to close the show. Campy, but fun.

      • Allegra says:

Tom was there to promote The Pirate Fairy and he sang The Bare Necessities, right?

      • Algernon says:

I remember hearing Disney marketing people complain about the footage shown, since it was the same as Comic Con. They weren’t happy about that, which is probably why they’re skipping SDCC this year. They won’t have conflict with D23, then. I bet this goes down like the Avengers did in 2011, when they skipped Comic Con but went to D23 and then did a panel at New York Comic Con.

      • browniecakes says:

Allegra – yes he promoted the Pirate Fairy on Saturday and Thor TDW on Sunday at that D23. If you can make it, it’s a great time and easier to get into than SDCC (so far!).

      • Allegra says:

        browniecakes:

        Thanks for the information.
Unfortunately, I do not live in the US.
        Maybe, one day…

    • Abby_J says:

We are looking forward to D23 as well as Comic Con. My husband humors my Disney love while I accept his Comic Book/Movies love. When Disney brought Marvel, it was a great day in our house. I was hoping for a Hiddles spotting at Comic Con, but figured it would be with one of his other movies.

Honestly, though, we are more excited for all the Star Wars that should be at D23 this year.

  16. TotallyBiased says:

I’m just here for the Hiddles.
No, but seriously–I have trouble wrapping my head around the idea that Marvel the film studio won’t do SDCC. A comicon without Marvel? But the comics Marvel will still be there, I’m sure, and maybe they will have the opportunity to pull a little focus for a change. They have a lot going on these days. Like the all-female Avengers!

  17. Bread and Circuses says:

I think Tom Hiddleston is adorable, but not particularly sexy.

    But in-character as Loki? Abruptly he’s beeeeeeoooooo-tiful.

I don’t know how the man does it.

  18. Saks says:

Hiddles is going anyway. Guillermo del Toro confirmed the cast of Crimson Peak will be there this year

    • Allegra says:

I don’t know about Mia and Charlie H, but yes to Tom and Chastain.
Jessica said she will be there in this interview last december:
      youtube.com/watch?v=EEK5b4ERIoA

And Oscar Isaac said he’d probably be there as well.

  19. et alors says:

Apparently, the trailer for High Rise was show in Paris today.

    https://twitter.com/pleazleblog/status/575302626901913600

Also, there’s supposedly a nude Hiddleston scene. Do with that what you will. 😛

    https://twitter.com/Ilan_Ar/status/575302830401196032

    • Lilacflowers says:

Nude sunbathing on the balcony, perhaps? ‘P’enny will be pleased.

At this point, it is easier to name the films in which he keeps his clothes on versus taking them off. Six on, six off with no news on AOU and ISTL. Although it is probably safe to say that he remains clothed in AOU.

    • MtnRunner says:

Remember ladies, I called Naked Hiddles in the claim-a-thon a few threads ago, along with Shakespeare Hiddles and Hillbilly Hiddles in the red plaid shirt. Huzzah!

      • Lilacflowers says:

Such claims fall against our marriage license but do feel free to imagine. And you are still on probation.

      • icerose says:

this must happen soon-I claim Hiddles naked with guitar or naked playing any instrument of his choice -it will happen if only in my dreams !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • jammypants says:

I claimed High Rise hiddles a while back. Surprised me bc no one claimed that. That includes balcony naked hiddles.

      • 'P'enny says:

Hiddles naked in High Rise on the balcony has been my claim for over a year now. Lilac flowers! you can’t deny me this one! help me beat Mtn Runner & jimmy pants off this Hiddles -One.

Buzz is, whatever that France show is, that its pretty good.

      • MtnRunner says:

P’enny, you and Lilac have to try and catch Tom before he sneaks out to see me. He’s pretty stealth and fast as you know. The man needs his mountains.

      • Isadora says:

I can confirm that ‘p’enny was with naked sun-bathing Hiddles right from the beginnng!

      • 'P'enny says:

        thank you Isadora 🙂

      • Lilacflowers says:

@’p’enny, you have claimed High-Rise nude sunbathing Tom since he was announced for the part.

@Mtnrunner, nice imagination you have there. He’s the one who insisted you be put on probation. He isn’t sneaking off anywhere. He is currently on loan to someone who won’t let him go to you and there are mountains enough in lots of places. You aren’t helping yourself to get off probation.

      • jammypants says:

Fair enough Penny, you can have nude sunbathing HR Hiddles. I still claim the rest of HR Tom, which includes poolside sexiness, romp with Charlotte Tom, and animal/crazy Tom.

      • MtnRunner says:

I have the hickeys to prove it, Lilac.

You shouldn’t be so trusting of the other ladies. You don’t know who’s in cahoots with me.

        *high fives unnamed co-conspirator*

      • Isadora says:

@jammypants: you may have poolside, Charlotte-romp and animal/crazy Tom BUT I claim elevator Tom. Sorry, no way around that. I have some nice ideas for .. you know.. an elevator and the mirrors and such..

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Mtnrunner, did you do that with a vacuum cleaner hose? Nobody is going to give up her time, dear. Or risk being put on probation. But your imagination is entertaining. You really don’t get the sharing thing, do you? You have to wait your turn. There are others ahead of you. Like Isadora. Who won’t give up her precious time. And you are still on probation, at his request. We could send you the bill for the doctor visit.

      • jammypants says:

@Isadora, no go lady. I claim HR Tom which includes everything. I had to make exceptions for Penny haha, but the rest of HR Tom is mine I’m afraid.

    • Bea says:

      SPOILER ALERT
      SPOILER ALERT

He bangs his sister along with another woman in High Rise and they live like a little cult for a while, he becomes a territorial wild beast.

      SPOILER ALERT
      SPOILER ALERT

Considering his co-stars tweet at the time (“Spent a lot of time on set today with a man who’s penis resembles an entire salmon en croute”) perhaps he’s putting his entire junk out there?

      • jammypants says:

I read the book and didn’t get the incest thing. I think there is tension, but I don’t think they did anything.

      • Lilacflowers says:

But the tweet could have been about Luke Evans whose character has an affair with Sienna Guillory’s character. Tom’s character has a brief affair with Sienna Miller’s character before the incest with the sister. He does engage in nude sunbathing

      • et alors says:

Lilacflowers, I think you’re right. IIRC, Tom wasn’t on set that day of filming, so people speculated that it was Luke.

      • Bea says:

@jammypants The incest happens very covertly, blink and you miss it. It is hinted at here and there but it deffo happens.

@Lilacflowers It’s probably wishful thinking on my part.

      • jammypants says:

@bea, oh my I need to reread it.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Bea, still possible for the nude sunbathing scene. Luke’s character spends a quarter of the book with his on display so it should be interesting to see how closely they followed the book.

      • Hannah says:

It could not have been Luke Evans because he left for SDCC on the day they filmed that scene.

      • M.A.F. says:

The penis talk was already talked about last year. Luke was on set not Tom. Plus, it could have been an extra or a stand-in.

      • Hannah says:

        @M.A.F

        Evidence from Luke’s twitter account:
        https://twitter.com/TheRealLukevans/status/492619421756977152

    • et alors says:

Tom also dances in the trailer, so maybe there’s a disco-themed scene?

      • Isadora says:

Wow, really? Were did you read this? Have you seen the trailer? Oh… so many questions. I can’t wait for this trailer. *crazy sobbing*

      • et alors says:

Oh, no, I haven’t been lucky enough to see the trailer. I just followed the trail of tears on a GFYTH posting that had a couple accounts about the dancing. I haven’t read the book, so I don’t know the context in which the dancing appears.

      • jammypants says:

Maybe the dancing was around the time Laing partied with the people on his floor? I need to re-read this.

  20. rtms says:

The main big event movie Avengers comes out in May, so it’s not like they need to hype anything big. They would have made all the money for the summer by Comic con in July. No use flogging a still live horse whose tired. Not to mention trying to coral all the actors just for that appearance after they’ve gone their own ways.

  21. 'P'enny says:

I just thought I’d report back to my CB-Hiddlebum-chums and say thanks for giving me Sunbathing-Naked-tom for a lifetime. I can report back, that he’s in good ‘hands’ and is sporting an all over tan, no white marks front and back and his 8 pack is might firm. [I’ve uploaded the photos to the I-Cloud for all to hack. ]

oh and in good tradition I’ve chained him to the sun-lounger. 😀

    He’s mine forever #cackles

Oh the High Rise apartment balcony he is chained to is the top floor of Shard – super sharp defence systems don’t even think of a rescue, girls.

    • Camil says:

      Yours forever?

OMG ‘P’enny, you sound dangerous and lethal!

Well, in that case I want explorer Hiddles from Skull Island

    • MtnRunner says:

P’enny, you’ve gotten brazen now that Lilac’s taken you off probation. Just be sure and feed him some good dogmeat while he’s up there since he needs to bulk up for TNM. Not to mention by the time he gets back to me, Tommy boy is gonna be itchin’ for a high altitude romp and he’ll need the stamina to go all 9 rounds.

    • TotallyBiased says:

8-pack? Oh, dear, ‘P’enny–you’ve been taken in by a manip!
Everyone knows Tom has like a 10- or 12- pack. Seriously, he has abs all the way down to his, ahem, yeah, there. 😉

  22. RJFLorida says:

TH is a BMF. That is all.

  23. Darya says:

So I’m about halfway through Night Manager, took me a few chapters to get the rhythm of Le Carre’s writing style, but I’m hooked now. How are they going to fit all that action into 6 hours?

    • Darya says:

Oh, and I think Aure Atika might have been cast as Sophie http://instagram.com/aureatika

I’ll confess I got the link from one of Tumblr blogs we’d been talking about before. But, as per usual, everyone has ignored the Insta photo and is busy debating the etymology of the term slore. sigh.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Darya, I saw that as well! Hence why I flense through most of the posts when I swoop by for a visit.
I also wondered if she has been cast as Sophie–the actress is Moroccan/French, and pretty gorgeous. She seems very happy to be there, as well!
I’ll be following her on Twitter, at least until they put a gag on her. 😉

Aure looks the part too. Glad to see they’re getting started on TNM. I’m just starting the book.

And what is it with Tom and tall statuesque blondes? They seem to gravitate to him or vice versa. He looks good with them too. I think he needs to snag one of the exotic looking ones for reals.

      • TotallyBiased says:

@MtnRunner–tall, statuesque blonde? Who are you referring to? (oh, my bad–“To whom are you referring?”)

      • MtnRunner says:

TB: Gwen, Tilda and Elizabeth. He looked good with the first two exotic-looking ones. Now he’s got another for the fantasy harem.

      • Darya says:

        Don’t forget Chris Hemsworth!! 😜

      • TotallyBiased says:

Sorry, MtnRunner–I’m too busy shipping him with Aure. By Elizabeth, you mean Elizabeth Olsen? I guess I never thought of her as statuesque, at 5’7″. But he did get her to smile, which is something it seems she doesn’t often do! Take a look at the salon/spa pics from Shreveport.
Otherwise, she’s so last movie. 😉

Darya–you kill me, you just do!

      • MtnRunner says:

TB – I was referring to Elizabeth Debicki, who plays his love interest in TNM. She’s 6’3″!

Darya – I was only buttering Tom’s bread on one side, but you do raise a good point. Tho’ I don’t think of CHemboy as statuesque or exotic as I do the ladies, they do look good together. 🙂

      • Darya says:

Mtn – I’m curious to see how they handle Debicki’s height – one pair of killer heels and she’ll tower over everyone, including Tom. Maybe most of the time she’ll be barefoot on tropical beaches. Who knows.

I’m still giggling at my own joke about Hems, sorry. Being tall and blonde are about his only qualifications. Chris is pretty, but I wouldn’t call him exotic either. He’s not my cup of tea, nor I suspect Tom’s – contrary to the hopes of a few ‘shippers’ I’ve run across in my Tumblr ramblings…that was an eyeopener to be sure.

      • TotallyBiased says:

First he gets the gorgeous Sophie, then a statuesque blonde? Oh my, Mr. Hiddleston–tell me you didn’t have any ulterior motives for taking *this* part? 😉

      • Darya says:

Totally- there’s also an ex-wife, a spurned hotel guest in Switzerland and two ( I think) women while Jonathan is on the run. I’m guessing most of that won’t make it onscreen though, or be given a line or two at best. I just don’t think they’ll have the time.

Pine does get around but I think only Sophie and Jed find their way to his heart.

      • jammypants says:

Forget Sophie and Jed. Who’s playing the Canadian? She’s the one getting most of the action 😉

      • Lilacflowers says:

Jeds is repeatedly described as having chestnut hair and having a faint resemblance to Sophie so I can’t imagine how Debicki would meet those requirements, so either she’ll be wearing a dark wig throughout of they’re altering that from the book.

      • FW says:

@jammypants I just reached the Canada part. Oh my, Yvonne is really having many fun moments! cue the lake;) I hope they won’t cut that part

      • jammypants says:

@FW, the Canadian bits gave me a new appreciation for the Pine character

      • MtnRunner says:

Just read that part too… boy Pine does get down and party doesn’t he? I’m really curious who will be cast as Yvonne.

      • Darya says:

I did love the entire Canada interlude, especially Yvonne and all the cooking. I’m now mightily distracted by all the mental images of Pine’s hands as he chops, stirs, cracks eggs, opens wine bottles, etc. etc. Do you suppose cooking lessons were part of Tom’s pre-production research?

Actually, part of me thinks we may not see much of Canada or Cornwall make the cut, those moments were needed for fleshing out Pine as a character but it doesn’t really move the plot along. Hope I’m wrong though, I want to see Tom/Pine on the run, all scruffy and fugitive-like, mixing it up with dodgy characters and holding his own in a fight.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Darya–with 9 to 12 hours of screen time, they can include a lot of character development. I just want to watch Tom cooking, after reading your description. It is, after all, an area where he already has some skills! (Google TH and ‘full English Breakfast’ 😉 )

      • Darya says:

@Totally – really, 9 to 12? Why was I thinking it was closer to 6-8 hours (minus commercial time)? That is extraordinarily good news. I therefore revise all of my assumptions and will be starting my mental screenplay over from scratch – total rewrite. Yvonne, Cornwall, the solo sailing trip, and maybe even NI are all back in.

      • TotallyBiased says:

@Darya–well, I am rather guessing (and possibly not taking out enough for commercials). But 6 episodes, minimum 90 minutes each, is where I started from.

      • MtnRunner says:

I haven’t finished the book, but I’ll be looking for them to flesh out a couple good sex scene. Le Carre just wasn’t descriptive enough for MY SATISFACTION.

    • smyling says:

Just wanted to point out they’ve started read throughs – BBCOne’s Instagram promises behind the scenes pics as they start filming.

    – Was treated to a screening of Guillermo del Toro’s new movie, CRIMSON PEAK, this weekend. Gorgeous and just f**king terrifying.

    – CRIMSON PEAK electrified me in the same way Sam Rami’s EVIL DEAD electrified me when I saw it for the first time way back in the day.

    • TotallyBiased says:

Isn’t that AMAZING! His son Joe Hill, a very good and successful horror writer and movie critic in his own right, also said such glowing things about Crimson Peak. Including that it was the most beautiful horror film EVER!

    • MtnRunner says:

High praise from the king of horror himself. The cinematography of the trailer looked absolutely gorgeous so I’ll deal with the terror that goes with it to enjoy the sensory feast.

A great article about the 15 minute film TH narrated the intro and ending to:

I’m especially impressed by the young actors playing Will Shakes and the Dauphin! (Thanks to HFB for bringing it to my attention.)

So today is Sir Richard Attenborough’s Memorial Service at Westminster Abbey (he died last August at the age of 90.) The article printed in every newspaper across the UK today only drops three names of people expected to be at the service (obviously they are expecting lots of people, but only three specific names are mentioned): Sir David Attenborough, Ben Kingsly, and Tom Hiddleston. ???
