We’ve been through this before, but here we go for another round of engagement speculation for Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal. Star Magazine is reporting that Jake asked Reese to marry him “for the third time” and Reese finally said yes. Multiple sources claim to have seen a large diamond engagement ring on Reese’s hand while she filmed an Avon commercial “recently”.
First, if and when Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal get engaged, People Magazine will confirm it, not Star. Secondly, just because Reese is wearing a diamond ring, doesn’t make it an engagement ring. It could just be a diamond ring, or better yet, a prop ring for the commercial. The third time was the charm for Jake Gyllenhaal! After two previous proposals to girlfriend Reese Witherspoon, he again got down on bended knee — and she finally said the word he’s been waiting to hear: “Yes!” But she’s having a hard time keeping the news under wraps.
When Reese arrived at Sony Studios in Culver City, Calif., to shoot an Avon commercial recently, she was wearing her new engagement ring, two set sources tell Star — but then decided she wasn’t ready to go public.
“It was gorgeous, and everyone noticed it right away,” says one eyewitness. “But she took it off as soon as she saw people staring. Reese stuffed it in her bag and didn’t put it on again the rest of the day.”
Still, the large diamond sparkler was the talk of the two-day shoot, says the second source. “There was already word out that she and Jake had gotten engaged, so the ring absolutely confirmed everybody’s suspicions.”
After what she calls a “very humiliating and very isolating” 2006 split from Ryan Phillippe, Reese could not even think about walking down the aisle again. At the time she thought, “I’m never going to feel any better than I feel right this minute,” Reese says in the March issue of Elle. But all that changed once she fell in love with Jake, whom she calls “a fantastic guy.”
Now the couple of two years is fast-tracking a wedding, and Reese is insisting on an intimate and simple affair. One insider reveals Reese is even thinking about having a Southern barbecue — likely at their Ojai, Calif., home, which she and Jake often use as a romantic getaway. “Jake and Reese want to get married sooner rather than later,” says the insider. “They’ve been playing house for far too long, and they’re ready to make it official!”

After reading my fair share of sordid gossip, I think I have pretty good radar for gossip that just isn’t there. So it pains me to say that Star might have a little something there. Maybe I’m getting soft – after all, Star broke the story about the Levi Johnston/Bristol Palin split before People and OK!
I know the conventional wisdom is that Jake is gay and Reese is his beard, but I really think he’s just a straight guy who is really into genuinely nice, put-together girls with little to no manufactured drama. And I do think Jake wants to get married, and I’ll buy that he’s probably asked Reese in various ways if she would be up for it. So did Jake put a ring on it? We’ll have to wait for People Magazine to confirm!

I can see why people stay ‘in the closet’ and all, in Hollywood, and why someone might agree to be a ‘beard’ for them (funny term!) to disguise their sexuality, but in this case, with RW so high on the A list, what would be in it for her? Is it that it provides a sort of cover so she can date more discretely? Why does that rumor stay with this couple?
Ted Casablanca at E! likes to hint all the time that Jake is gay and their romance is fake, but I just love these two together! I don’t know why Reese would need to fake a relationship for this long… at least just do it short-term like Jen A/John M, haha. I would love it if they got married.

Those who follow gossip and know how Hollywood works could give you 10 reasons why Reese Witherspoon needs this as much as Jake.
But there is no point because people are naive and refuse to believe that all celebrities can lie and pretend for $$$.
I don’t think its contractual relationship at all. I think they are genuninly (sp?) happy together, engaged or not. Why is it so hard to believe that 2 stars are happy?

Personally I don’t understand why, if what RW wants from this is press, she doesn’t just date someone for real and that way she gets real romance PLUS media coverage! Sounds like a better deal than having to pretend with your gay friend and simply be the beard.

I love his early stuff, like Donnie Darko and Bubble Boy, and he was great in The good Girl with Jennifer Aniston (I think I have those movies right?) And his sister, I think, is just beyond talented. I guess it’s in the genes. Sigh.

So maybe I’m naive, but I still have trouble believing celebs maintain long-term relationships with people for PR purposes only. A couple of dates, I can understand — but a whole year or more? Seems an awfully big waste of time — especially for someone as serious and grounded as Reese Witherspoon.
I don’t think this is a fake romance. They have been together for what almost 3 years now. I think if it was PR it would have been a fling.

@Matt – are you Ted C? Or just one of those gay men who think every male celeb is gay? Reese W’s no Katie Holmes. And Jake G is about as far removed from Cruise as it’s possible to be.
I don’t think they are faking it. Reese is a religious woman and goes to church, which would lead me to believe she would have qualms about living a lie. Also, she certainly has no “track record” of faking relationships like other celebs that we know! Her marriage to Ryan was certainly real. And messy. I’d be more inclined to believe a fauxmance from someone like Tom Cruise.
Also Lainey insists they are the real deal, as someone pointed out. Not that she is the be all end all, but why would she insist that their love is real over and over if it’s not? COuld she be getting paid? Really, I’d love to know what some of you think!
