I recently started a healthier lifestyle that began with a detox drink called the Master Cleanse and since has seen me eating more organic, local foods, as well as free-range eggs and meats. While I am not a vegetarian myself, I have the utmost respect for people that are. And statistics are showing that more and more people are becoming vegetarians themselves. Here are some statistics from a survey in the United States in 2006 found on the Vegetarian Resource Group site:
100% Total adults
6.7% Never eat meat
6.3% Never eat poultry
14.6% Never eat fish/seafood
7.6% Never eat dairy products
8.8% Never eat eggs
23.4% Never eat honey
2.3% Never eat meat, poultry, fish/seafood (vegetarian)
1.4% Never eat meat, poultry, fish/seafood, dairy products/eggs (vegan, except for possibly honey)
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or the good folks known as PETA, obviously believe in vegetarianism, and like to celebrate those that do as well, and that includes our dear celebrities. For the past few years they have held an online vote where you get to pick the World’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity, and that includes one veggie queen and one veggie king. Potential Veggie Queens include Natalie Portman (ding ding ding), Darryl Hannah, Fiona Apple and Thora Birch. Veggie Kings include Andre 3000 (cha ching), Woody Harrelson, Forest Whitaker, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas.
Past winners include Carrie Underwood(2005), Josh Hartnett(2003), and Shania Twain(2001-the first winner).
So now, what are you doing? Go vote at goveg.com
They also have lots of great vegetarian recipes that you should check out, too.
