Zoe Kravitz battled bulimia & anorexia for years up until 2013-14

I’ve grown to like Zoe Kravitz more and more over the years. Do I think she’s a world-class actress? Eh, not really. But she’s an interesting celebrity and I like seeing her choices, her friendships, her fashion and her boyfriends. She’s more interesting to me than most of the 20-something starlets out there. Zoe covers the new issue of Complex – you can read the full piece here, plus see the latex-themed photoshoot. It’s sort of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with a dash of Fifty Shades of Grey. The interview is wide-ranging, with discussion about her parents, her past eating disorders and an acknowledgment that she’s benefitted from nepotism. Some highlights:

Her “normal” life: “When I was younger. I really wanted to prove to people I was a normal human being, that I was cool, chill. When kids were mean, the first thing they’d say is, ‘She thinks she’s so f–king cool because her dad is famous,’ I just wanted to fit in.”

Lenny Kravitz was a super-embarrassing dad: “He would come pick me up from school sometimes when he was in town in a sports car and a netted shirt, and I’d be like, ‘Ugh.’ That was when ‘Fly Away’ came out.”

Her struggles with eating disorders: “I had a really hard time when I was 16, 17, 18. I started with the eating disorder in high school… Just [a hard time] loving myself.” In high school, she became anorexic and bulimic—“awful diseases” she’d battle to various degrees until the last two or so years. And here, she’s willing to acknowledge to a certain degree her pedigree playing a darker kind of role: “I think it was part of being a woman, and being surrounded by [fame]… I don’t think it was about the fame, but I think it was definitely about being around that world, seeing that world. I felt pressured.”

Playing an anorexic in ‘The Road Within’ in 2013: “My parents got really scared for me to go back down that road. It was f–ked up, man. You could see my rib cage. I was just trying to lose more weight for the film but I couldn’t see: You’re there. Stop. It was scary.” She got sick after filming wrapped. She didn’t get her period regularly because she was too malnourished. Her immune system shut down, her thyroid was thrown off.

Moving past her eating disorder: “It made me not only confront my demons, but also realize and accept an insecurity that’s still there, and [that it’s] easy to fall back into that pattern. I feel like something has left my body, like some part of me is gone now, something that was making me so insecure. And it feels amazing.”

She admits that things were handed to her: “It was very easy for me to get an agent when I wanted to act, for obvious reasons. And I don’t know, maybe it’s not because they thought I was talented—I wasn’t the most talented girl in the world when I was 15. It was because my parents were famous, and they were like, ‘Cool, maybe we can make money off of that.’ I know so many talented people that do the most amazing things but they need to work at a restaurant. I don’t. I can make all the art I want and get paid to do it—it’s f–king crazy. I’m so thankful for it.”

The situation with Drake: They’re “very good friends… I’m very flirtatious. [But] he’s family to me. He’s a really, really awesome dude. We inspire each other. We play each other music.”

I think she’s totally hitting it with Drake. Now, I don’t think she’s his girlfriend or anything, but my guess is that they have some kind of friends-with-benefits situation. And I’ll also believe that she has the same kind of situation with Chris Pine (get it, girl). But even Zoe admits that guys don’t ask her out and she’s constantly being told, “You’re so cool that I can’t handle it.” I believe that.

As for her eating disorders… I didn’t realize she was struggling with anorexia and bulimia so recently. Like, it sounds as if she only got her health on track in the past two years. I’m glad she’s doing better and I hope she’s surrounding herself with positive people.

Good for her for talking about it, but it seems crazy to take on a role as an anorexic and try to diet to fulfill that ‘look’ when she was in recovery herself.

    • V4Real says:

Agree. I think it’s kind of risky, not the role itself but what she did in order to play that role.

I do like that she takes ownership of her nepotism. Some actors with famous relatives swear that their success in the industry was due only because of their talents and not their famous mother or father.

      • QQ says:

I Like that too V4 is like Ok she is doing her thing but it didnt magically happen.. Rummer Willis and those insufferable Eastwood Kids would do well to follow suit

        Also; These pics look FIERCE!!

      • Kath says:

But why are bleached eyebrows a thing?

      • Amy says:

        @Kath

I gotta say considering how fierce and amazing she looks she seems to be the only person who’s knocked the bleached eyebrows look out of the park.

  2. savu says:

I hope what other eating disorder sufferers get out of this is that there’s hope! Look how well she’s doing now, and how great she feels about it. Good for her.

  3. cynthia says:

I have grown to love her as well… I love her style and how she’s cool without being too try hard.I appreciate that she admits that she has a career not only because of her talent but also because of connections; others should follow her example in this sense.

    • TX says:

Yes! Too often celebrity kids are so unwilling to admit that their family connections buy them a starting point. the hardest part about acting/modeling/singing etc is getting your foot in the door. It doesn’t mean that they are not talented- it just means they had an easier time of it.

      • Esthetix says:

I think a lot of celeb kids do that because of insecurity. Zoe seems very self aware which is rare when you’ve always been rich and grew up in a bubble.

    • Alex says:

I think it also has to do with her parents. They seem like the type to tell her to appreciate the connections but to work hard. She’s got a cool family and I love hearing her talk about how close her blended family is.
As for her eating disorder…I had no idea. But I’m glad she’s back on the healthy track.
I don’t find her compelling as an actress so far (maybe she needs a better role) but I am interested in hearing what her music is like.

  4. outstandingworldcitizen says:

Zoe seems very unpretentious. I appreciate her candor about her life and how easy things have been for her in regard to getting modelling and acting jobs. Not crazy about that first photo. Her forehead looks alien like.

  5. Kdlaf says:

I cant really speak on her acting abilities but e seems like a really interesting person. I always thought it would be amazing to have cool parents like that and the bank account to go with it – never realized the pressure it puts on you though. I do want to know her secret to getting guys like Fassy and Badgely as boy toys.

  6. ToodySezHey says:

    Zoe is honest and refreshing.

That said she can’t help her forehead. It’s her dad’s.

  7. Betti says:

She stands out amongst her peers not necessarily because of talent but attitude – she has the kind of attitude that can easily make her a role model to young women and we need more of her for them to counter the Kim Kardashians/Lindsay Lohans that seem to be filling the media.

And kudos for talking about her eating disorders – it wouldn’t have been easy.

  8. kai says:

Wow, I LOVE what she said about her privileges. Now, how hard was that? People can’t help where they’re born. There’s no shame in it. I’d take advantage of it, too. She sounds very cool.

  9. Liz says:

    That first picture is gorgeous.

  10. Dawn says:

Not impressed with her or any other celebrity kid that has shit handed to them with minimal effort. She’s pretty, But not a very good actress. Yawn.

    • Kim1 says:

I am not impressed with anybody who has stuff handed to them because they have a rich, powerful family.

  11. ann says:

I hope she’s doing and stays well. Good to hear when someone is honest.

I wish Lenny was picking me up in his sports car today! I won’t be picky about what he wears

  12. Naddie says:

I don’t know much about her, I didn’t even know Lenny has an adult daughter until last year. But I just loved her realizing that things were handed to her, honesty is always welcome.

  13. Suzy from Ontario says:

She seems much more honest and genuine than a lot of celebrity kids, especially in acknowledging the nepotism. That said, however, nepotism will only get you so far and you have to have some talent and work ethic to continue to be offered roles and get work, and she does.

I laughed at the part about her Dad picking her up in his net shirt and her being so embarassed! Clearly, no matter how cool your parents are, there are things about them you get embarassed about! lol!

I hope she is past the eating disorders now that she is coming into her own more and more. Eating disorders are so often about feeling like you have some control in an a life that feels uncontrollable, and it sounds like she felt like she felt a lot of pressure in her environment growing up. Now that she’s rising past her parents’ fame into her own and is maturing, hopefully she will feel solid enough about herself and who she is not to fall into that trap again. I think doing that movie was a very dangerous thing to do at the point she was at in her recovery, but then again…it seems to have shown her how easily she could fall back into it and that seems to have made her more aware and to be more careful. I hope so, it’s a horrible disease.

  14. Astrid says:

I don’t have much of an opinion one way or the other about her, can’t say I’ve seen her in a recent movie. I’ve heard more than one female celebrity, including Zoe, say that they have a hard time dating, that their persona is too cool/beuatiful or whatever….oh really. Like its easy for the rest of us regular people?

    • perplexed says:

Yeah, I was a little struck by the weirdness of that sentiment (although I don’t know if that’s how she actually worded it or whether the sentiment was paraphrased for her). She sounded humble throughout most of the interview, but that one particular line sounded funny. And she’s dated Michael Fassbender and Chris Pine, so her love life can’t be in that bad shape.

    • Amy says:

Well I think most people imagine if you’re good looking/wealthy/or famous enough that you get everything when it’s not true. I’m surprised a lot of gorgeous Hollywood women are either single or end up with some tacky men, I assume beauty is half of what makes someone walk across a room to talk to you and it’s surprising that as beautiful as they are they cant have relationships.

  15. Mrs. Darcy says:

More power to her for beating this, but taking on a role like that with her history is the equivalent of Robert Downey Jr. going method for a drug addict role – just, no, bad idea.

  16. Lucy says:

What a candid and refreshing interview. She really does have more personality and humility than many other celebs. I have heard eating disorder rumors in the past, but had no idea it was that bad. I’m glad she’s okay now.

  17. PrincessMe says:

This is why I don’t talk about the way someone looks on the Internet – you just never know what someone is battling inside. I’ve seen people criticize her looks in comparison to her parents and that must hurt. It can contribute to someone thinking that something’s “wrong” with the way they look and trying to change it drastically (especially when they’re young).

Like others have said, when I read about her taking a part to play an anorexic so soon after battling those same demons, I thought “big mistake” but maybe she wasn’t very healthy at that point for her to think the same. I do wish her all the best and hope that she’s past it and can make healthy decisions and not revisit that place.

  18. LAK says:

At least she’s self aware enough about the nepotism and is grateful for it. She won’t be a lazy one.

  19. I Choose Me says:

I like her a lot. she seems so down to earth and her honesty about the role nepotism has played in her life won her extra points with me.

  20. Veritas says:

I’m not surprised because I remember seeing pictures of her and thinking she’s way too thin. She did use to look like she had an eating disorder of some kind. She did not look healthy at all.

  21. Bread and Circuses says:

It’s great to see someone who grew up in a state of privilege SAY “I was privileged, and I’m thankful for it, but I know I didn’t earn it,” rather than “Hey, I WORK, y’know. This was ALL ME. I don’t think I had it easy.”

Also, it’s hilarious that she found Lenny Kravitz mortifying as a dad. Typical teen. 🙂

    • Boxy Lady says:

Lenny’s mom was famous too. Maybe Lenny passed on his stories of growing up with a famous parent to Zoe in order to help her with perspective. Whatever happened, it seems to have worked in her favor.

Also, I doubt ANY teenage girl wants to see her father in a netted shirt, lol.
