Here are some photos of Michelle Rodriguez at the Furious 7 premiere (Kaiser covered solo Elsa Pataky and everyone else). Michelle’s wearing a Vivienne Westwood dress, which is gorgeous under certain lighting. The silhouette flatters Michelle, but the jacquard overlay is the wrong color. It looks dusty, for lack of a better descriptor. I would have preferred a darker overlay, but I’m chuffed to see Michelle favoring Westwood designs lately.
Michelle has a new interview with NJ.com. The most interesting part is how she picks her roles. You’ll never see her play the girlfriend who fades into the background. Michelle also has a problem with scripts that feature an empowered women getting killed or raped. Yes, why does Hollywood do that? Michelle has the answer:
The appeal of this franchise: “We’re antiheroes being heroes, you know? It’s kind of Robin Hood-esque … But also I think it has a lot to do with the multicultural cast. People in this country – or in Spain, in Africa, in Asia – they can buy a ticket and see somebody who looks like them, and someone who isn’t necessarily a stereotype but an individual, a character who’s kind of blue-collar but also in this heroic position. It’s still pretty rare to have characters like that you can identify with. And after all this time, it’s crossing generations. I have six-year-kids running up to me and talking about Letty, which is really cool.”
On early career advice people gave her: “Well, I don’t know how well-intentioned it was! But you know, here’s the thing – I have such a strong sense of self, there are certain lines I just won’t cross. I’m really picky about the parts I choose. I can’t be the slut. I cannot be just the girlfriend. I can’t be the girl who gets empowered because she’s been raped. I can’t be the girl who gets empowered and then dies. So I just said to myself, look, you’re going to just have to create your own archetype, doesn’t matter if you go broke doing it. And I almost did go broke, twice! But people finally got it: OK, Michelle is not malleable, you’re not going to influence her by shining fame and money at her, and they stopped offering me that sort of stuff. But you know, it’s a Catch-22. It’s helped me and it’s screwed me. I’ve stuck to my guns and I’m proud.”
The movie cliché of the empowered women who dies: “I remember this script that came over my desk and it’s – I’m not even going to name it, it’ll just get me in more trouble – but I was reading it and at first I wanted to say no, because she’s Latina and she’s a drug dealer, and that’s like the only time you see Latin-Americans in Hollywood pictures. But I kept reading and I thought, well, some of it is based on truth, and she’s kind of an interesting person. And then I turn the page and they’ve stuck in this rape scene. Which didn’t even happen in real life, they just stuck it in there, this made-up thing and I thought, why? Why it is necessary to take her down like that? I mean, like Million Dollar Baby – why’s she got to die at the end, man? I mean, I get the tear-jerking, but would you do that to a male character? … I mean like 80% of the writers out there are men, and of course you’re going to write what you know. But it’s our fault as women for not penetrating that market, you know? I can’t complain about the scripts that are out there until I start writing some myself.”

Michelle also talks about how everything came together for her after first Resident Evil movie. That’s the first time I noticed her and knew she possessed a fierceness seldom seen in Hollywood movies. She speaks the truth on how most script writers are men, and their narratives reflect their bias. Not every guy writes that way (obviously), but that’s the general trend.
MRod’s been making the press rounds. She talked to Entertainment Weekly about her sense of loss over Paul Walker’s death. They were friends and co-workers for 14 years, and she was so used to his regular presence that “I went pretty crazy. A lot of the stuff I did last year I would never do had I been in my right mind.” I believe she’s referring to the bizarre Zac Efron fling and the Cara Delevingne mess. There’s also a gross story about how obsessed she is with caviar. Us Weekly says Michelle regularly drops $700 in a single sitting because she loves the stuff so much. What a waste of money.

She is a very limited actress so i think the roles pick themselves. She really only works in action movies or any movie which requires minimal acting and a good physicality. Theres plenty of guys around like that around so its cool if there are proper female action stars too.
I agree. She doesn’t have much range as an actress. She couldn’t play any dramatic demanding roles.
I disagree. Girl fight is one of the few if not the only well rounded 3 dimensional lead character she’s played (not just bad azzd sidekick) showed her true range and she was impressive…and that was only her first film.
You really can’t judge her acting on avatar or the FF franchise…she needs another great role like her first. I admire her for not selling out and playing some nitwit in a romcom.
By the way the role she’s talking about was of Columbian, Griselda Blanco, called the Godmother, she was the most ruthless head of all the drug cartels in the 70s and 80s. She would have been amazing in that ish. Last I heard they had cast Catherine zeta Jones which more people of Latin background should be outraged over.
She is but isn’t she sort of admitting that here? That makes me like her more.
True. And I don’t mind because she’s Hot. 😉 In love!
So hot.
I can’t talk about her acting abilities, but I do know that her main passion is writing. That’s why she talks so much about scripts in interviews, because that’s what she really wants to do.
She’s still my celebrity girl crush. Love her
I thought it amazing when she said “Why do they have to bring her down like that?” (why does she have to die at the end?) I just left the Kardashion page, and ask the same question, “Why do they have to bring him down like that?”
Her interview was really entertaining. There were moments that I might have taken issue with, had she not tempered them with hints of self-awareness.
She’s ok.
This is one time I’m going to disagree with you, Kitten.
I find her to be an appalling human being. She complains about a rape scene being written into a movie which was probably loosely based off a person – but she has no problem assaulting people in real life.
“For some reason left unexplained in the police report, Rodriguez forcibly disconnected the phone, landed a blow across the other woman’s right eye and started pulling her hair. When the woman tried to leave, Rodriguez blocked the door, and the woman apparently pulled a Mike Tyson on her and bit her on the arm. “The tussle spilled onto the street, where the thespian, with fists clenched, again allegedly pummeled the victim in the face and pulled her hair. The report stated that when police arrived on the scene, they witnessed Rodriguez threatening to get Resident Evil on the other woman, saying, ‘I’m going to beat you up if you don’t leave.’ “Rodriguez was charged with simple assault and one count of making a terrorist threat.”
Between that and her repeated drunk driving I really can’t stand her.
I also found the quote “I mean, like Million Dollar Baby – why’s she got to die at the end, man? I mean, I get the tear-jerking, but would you do that to a male character? ” so weird — Gladiator? The Titanic? TON’S of other movies where the main (male) character dies.
Yeah she’s proven to be a mean ass drunk, over and over again.
Im kinda with you Erinn, besides the violent temperament Homegirl must have gotten the Foot-in-mouth Cooties Gwynneth Paltrow has
I agree with Erinn. Not only is she violent too she also says some pretty racist and ignorant things. I don’t like her at all anymore
She looks like Rosie O’Donnell to me.
they have that same smile never noticed that before
I see Julia Louis Dryfus especially when she’s open mouth laughing.
She speaks some truth about female pigeonholing and and sexist movie plot lines, albeit the delivery is a little messy. I’ll give her this one.
I am so over sexual assault being a plot device. It’s beyond gross.
Is the movie she’s talking about Savages?
It would be nice if movies focused on solutions…
That was my first guess too!
Her toes look weird in the third pic.
Would you say that about a guy?
Seriously? That’s all you could come up with from the entire article? Hmm OK. Her toes seem pretty normal to me. Didn’t even notice their existence until you mentioned it.
I guess one has to scan and analyse real close to find these ‘flaws’. Pff…
I didn’t mean that she has ugly toes. Her dress is long and makes her feet to look weird.
Yes if I would see a guy with flip flops and too long pants hat I would say that too.
Her recent comment about minorities taking white super hero roles has really tainted my view of her, but I do like some of her comments here.
She is right about characters people from South America get to play. It’s also true for peple from Eastern Europe, or Africa, maybe Asia to a lesser extent. If you’re not North American or Western or Southern European, the roles you get are very very limited and very very stereotypical.
That is so true. I’m Slavic and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Slavic woman in a Hollywood movie who wasn’t a prostitute. Guys get to be mobsters or war criminals.
It also bugs me the way they portray us like we live in extreme poverty, when the life stlye here and in Western Europe is pretty much the same.
Southern Europe doesn’ t get stereotypes in american movies? I’ m Italian, and I have yet to see an american anything that doesn’ t make us uncultured, prone to talk with our hands, extremely religious, obsessed with food or without a care in the World because making love is what’ s important to us. Oh, and obviously, the mafia!
I’m sorry, perhaps I was wrong then, maybe it didn’t stand out to as much because because being portayed as loud and talkative didn’t seem as offensive as being portayed as poor and a prostitute, but you are right, a stereotype is a stereotype.
That dress is absolutely exquisite. Just gorgeous.
Most of the goodwill I have towards her is because Girlfight was so awesome. It’s great to hear her talking like this but of course she’s selling her movie.
Hey, someone else remembers Girlfight! She was so great in it and I remember thinking there was no way she would get regular work because she’s so different. I love being proven wrong.
Another Girlfight fan here. She’s always been outspoken and unrepentant and generally a publicist’s nightmare, but she’s a breath of fresh air in Hollywood and I’m always happy to see her get work.
First: I like the overlay in this colour. A darker one and she’ll look like a bordel Madame.
I can follow her reasoning about the usual role types, especially the empowered ones. But I disagree about Million Dollars Baby. A woman with such a career, being dead from the neck down in the best years of her life…How many will have the power to keep on living? I think a male character would have ended the same way.
Regarding the caviar…everyone is allowed their one indulgence. I forgive her. Lol.
I’m with you. If I had the money to drop, food is the thing I would drop it on. Her money, her choice. She could be spending it on something worse!
Yup. Any disposable income I have goes to food. My friends and family all wonder why I would do that, since I’d have nothing to show for. I loved her in Girl Fight so much that I overlook so much of her BS.
I love her. She cracks me up. Side note: Million bucks her boobs are fake. Can’t believe I’m only just noticing that
