Taylor Swift emergency: Calvin Harris is allergic to her kitties Meredith & Olivia!

Here are some assorted photos of Taylor Swift from this weekend. She was in NYC for much of the weekend (getting pap’d solo), but she flew down to Texas for the ACMs last night, to pick up her Milestone Award. Her mother was the one who presented the award to her, and this came just a week after her mom was diagnosed with cancer. It was sad and emotional for Swifty – you can read more about it here. Swifty’s ACM gown was Reem Acra. It’s pretty.

Now, to lighten the mood a little bit, Bedhead sent me this hilarious story about Swifty’s latest boyfriend, Calvin Harris. Allegedly – and the original source for this is a terrible UK tabloid – Calvin Harris has some kind of cat dander allergy. THIS IS AMAZING.

Calvin Harris is allergic to Taylor Swift’s cats. The Scottish DJ has struck up a romance with the ‘Blank Space’ hitmaker but her insistence on letting her beloved furry felines Olivia Benson and Meredith Grey share her bed has caused him a problem.

A source said: ”When he stayed over at Taylor’s LA house last week, Calvin says he was up all night blowing his nose and complaining he couldn’t breathe. Apparently he’s allergic to the long fluffy hair on Taylor’s cats and they usually sleep in the bed so it’s everywhere.”

Taylor’s devotion to her kitties has caused some ”tension” as Calvin is now reluctant to visit her at home.

The source added to heat magazine: ”He left really early the next morning – I think it’s caused a bit of tension because now Calvin wants to meet up in hotel rooms or at his place in LA, but not at Taylor’s house.”

I grew up with cats and I was always pretty good with them, but it wasn’t until I went away to college that I realized I had just built up a cat dander tolerance. Nowadays, I can’t really be around long-haired cats (like my mom’s Maine Coon) because my eyes go red and puff up and I start itching and sneezing all over the place. I’m pretty good with short-haired cats though, so maybe my cat dander allergy isn’t SO bad. Both of Taylor’s kitties are short-haired Scottish folds, so Calvin must have a pretty serious cat dander allergy if Olivia and Meredith are making him sick. Poor Swifty! And poor Calvin. Meredith and Olivia are probably happy though. They don’t want to share their mom with some terrible Scotsman. Olivia and Meredith are the co-presidents of Swifty’s “I Hate Boys” Club.

Then Calvin needs to go. Simple.

My Dad’s doctor once suggested that he might need to get rid of his cat because of his COPD issues. Dad figured it would be easier to get rid of the doctor. Interesting side note – the cat in question originally belonged to the next door neighbor but decided it wanted to live with Dad. I think Dad was right that it would be easier to get rid of the doctor.

This thread is AWESOME. just what I needed on a stressful Monday, THANK YOU!! 🙂

    • Abby says:

Yep. I dated a guy for a few weeks in college and he was allergic to my cat. It didn’t work out. Not because of the cat but looking back, I would never ever get rid of my cat over a man!

My brother on the other hand, is dating a girl that’s allergic to cats. Conveniently, he’s now “allergic” and his cat has found a new home. So much judging over here. He really doesn’t deserve to be a pet owner.

      • Amanda says:

Maybe it’s better that the cat is now in a loving home instead of with owners who don’t want it anymore.

    • Imqrious2 says:

When I first moved out of my parents’ home into my new place, the first thing I did was adopt a kitten. All was good in my world (even with my allergies). Then, I adopted two more (brother and sister), and BOOM! my sinuses exploded Lol.

My allergist tested me, and on a scale of 1 to 4, I was a 4 PLUS to cats! He said I had to get rid of the cats. I told him that was NOT going to happen, and were there alternatives? Well, for 2 1/2 yrs. I got shots, twice a week (after a while I could do it myself and didn’t have to schlep to his office). And you know what? I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Nothing could measure the love and joy I got from my furry, little cuddlers 🐱😻😽 😄

  2. Kitten says:

Oh man, as an owner of two Foldies with an allergic boyfriend, I SO feel for her. And him.
My kitties also sleep in the bed with me and sh*t is getting real now that shedding season is starting.

Last Spring, my little boy kitty was too young to shed but now he’s an explosion of gray fur and I’m really wondering how this will affect the boyfriend. When we first started dating I went out and bought him his own designated pillow that stays in plastic casing and is stored in the bathroom closet. Anyway, I’ve seen a weird misconception floating around that Scottish Folds don’t shed. NOT TRUE.

    • Kiddo says:

The natural wipes can help to keep dander down, and I think food plays a role too. I believe it is the dander more than the hair that creates the allergies.

      • Kitten says:

Oh really? I have a couple different types of wipes that I bought to clean their ears. You’re saying I should use those on their bodies as well?

      • Kiddo says:

Yeah, but read the ingredients carefully and look them up. And paper towel them down, so they don’t get a chill. You could probably cut some of the dander with a plain damp paper towel. Although I also read somewhere that it was the saliva, not dander, but if the wipes are safe, it couldn’t hurt. I actually think I am somewhat allergic to cats myself, even though I have them.

      • Suzanne says:

Horribly allergic here with two awesome cats. I take allergy medicine daily to keep my sniffles and red eyes at bay, and we also make sure to brush the cats and use the wipes (can’t remember the name but there are natural ones out there designated for cats). We also try to vacuum, dust, and lint roll often. The only time I have a problem now is when I forget to take my medicine for a day or two.

      • Kitten says:

        Thanks for the tips, Kiddo!

@Suzanne-I also vacuum like a fiend and I take Zyrtec but my ornery BF refuses to take any allergy medicine.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

That is a really hard situation. Feel for you and the bf.

    • Boodiba says:

Do tell about the wipes for their ears. I don’t clean my Fold’s ears currently…

      • Kitten says:

It is my understanding that the triple Folds are the only ones that *require* ear-cleanings, but I use ear wipes that I bought at Unleashed to periodically clean the underneath of their ears, just as a precautionary measure.

Both of mine are double Folds with ears that “pop” more in the summertime when it’s hot.

  3. mia girl says:

“Um, Taylor sorry I can’t stay over, turns out I just discovered I am allergic to cats”

This is the BEST *let-me-get-the-heck-out-of-here-this-girl-already-has-a-scrapbook-with-my-name-on-it* EXCUSE EVER!!!

The song writes itself – “He dumped my heart in the litter box”

  4. Jade says:

Poor guy! But I guess even if he wants to leave her, he can blame it on his allergies and hope that he can dodge being in her out of love songs?

I kid I kid, still love you Taylor!

  5. Babyswans says:

Totally true-you can develop a tolerance for cat dander. When I married my husband, he was allergic to cats, but Lucy existed before he did so I refused to get rid of her. 5 yrs later he barely sniffles. He’s a dr and says he built up a tolerance and that allergies can change as you age. To be honest though, we don’t have carpet, I vaccuum a lot and now my poor short hair cat gets a lion cut when seasons change to prevent excessive shedding.

  6. vauvert says:

Taylor, dump him. You can do so much better – find a guy who will not be allergic to your sweet cats. (I can just see those cats giving him the evil eye and fluffing their tail on purpose!!)

  7. Dońt kill me i'm french says:

    Exit Calvin!

  8. chaine says:

omg, i CAN NOT WAIT for her next album to hear the songs based on this forthcoming breakup…

  9. ell says:

ugh, drop the boyfriend. he’s not all that anyway.

ETA: I love that all comments are saying the same thing 🙂

  10. Cerulean Skygirl says:

Why can’t he just take Benadryl? I’m allergic to cats, so when I go to a friend’s house who owns them, I just take an allergy pill. Easy peasy. I don’t exactly see this as a relationship “emergency”.

    • K says:

I take four different kinds of meds and I still get massive allergy headaches when I’m at my cat-loving friends’ homes.

    • TrixC says:

It depends on the person, my boyfriend is horribly allergic to cats, they give him asthma, and allergy medicine doesn’t help.

      • The Other Katherine says:

Yes, this is why hubby and I don’t have cats. He ADORES cats, but they cause him severe asthma (like, audible wheezing) and rashes, in addition to the sneezing and itchy eyes, and medication doesn’t help anywhere near enough.

As a cat lover, I gotta say — don’t hook up with someone with severe cat allergies unless you are SURE. I hope for a long and happy marriage, but when I am one day widowed many years hence, as seems statistically likely, I am consoling myself with a kitten!

  11. Cinderella says:

    P*ssy blocked!

    • Dragonlady Sakura says:

Lol. The cats are secretly plotting to themselves to keep their mama away from another douche bag.

  12. Lucy2 says:

I just had allergy tests done, and it turns out I’m allergic to cats also, but not too badly. I’ve had them my whole life, and my one now I’ve had for 15 years. My dr told me I should get rid of her (again, it’s a minor allergy). I was not pleased, and told her that was not even an option.
Unless it’s truly a serious problem, you find ways to deal with it.

  13. Yeses says:

I sense a song in the works by Swifty….
“You say you sneeze because of my cats, I guess it’s cuz you aren’t all that
My heart broke when you left me, over what you said was a feline allergy
I don’t need you, I’m strong, I’ll have this song and i’ll be A OK
As looooooong as I have Olivia Benson and Meredith Grey”

  14. Anna. says:

Im calling bullsh*t on this story because of the source… But, if its true, its funny lol

  15. Boston Green Eyes says:

As long as her girlfriend isn’t allergic…

  16. Allie says:

I hate that the ACM’s gave Taylor a random award just so they could guarantee that she show up for more viewers.

I’m allergic to cats and there’s honestly no over the counter pills that reduce my reactions to them. It’s so hard going over to my friends houses that have cats.

    • Anna. says:

Yeah, the ACMs wanted more audience… That being said, I thought she handled it quite well, because she mentioned that her music is pop.

Her mum’s speech was beautiful imo. I enjoyed that tiny bit of info about Love Story!

And I really love that NY look with the blazer and shorts, and those fantastic green shoes

  17. it'sjustblanche says:

As the patron saint of cat ladies everywhere, Taylor Swift owes it to future generations of cat ladies to find a solution to this problem. Surely, there is one.

  18. OTHER RENEE says:

I used to sneeze uncontrollably and suffer with watery eyes just walking into a house with cats. I alwaya knew there were cats in a house the instant i walked in, even if no one had told me beforehand. If I took an allergy pill, it was better but not great. I felt asthmatic regardless. For some reason I’m now able to tolerate being at a particular cat friend’s house whereas just a couple years ago I could not. Maybe it helps that when she knows I’m coming over, she vacuums and cleans up everywhere.

  19. Leah says:

Well her cats are cuter than Calvin so id get rid of him.

  20. Annie says:

This is actually really awkward. I’m super allergic to cats and if I touch one and then touch my eye my whole face literally swells up. My family kept outdoor cats growing up but I never seemed to develop any tolerance for them at all. People think I’m just making it up and being a drama queen until they actually see it for themselves.

    • OTHER RENEE says:

Omg that happened to my daughter when she was a little girl! We were at a friend’s house when she came up to me with her eyes totally swollen shut and said, “Mommy I think I’m allergic to cats! I touched the cat then touched my eyes!” I was horrified.

  21. ashley says:

my boyfriend was DEATHLY allergic to my cat, to the point where his throat would completely close and his whole body would itch. Eventually we wanted to move in together but I, being the crazy cat lady I am, said that she was coming with no matter what. So he started getting allergy shots and believe it or not, they actually WORK! So much so that he fell in love with a little black kitten a few months ago and we adopted him too MUAHAHHAAH. There’s hope, Taytay

  22. Ferdinand says:

Well it was about time someone turned out to be allergic to Taylor’s pussy!

  23. Jonathan says:

My best friend/flatmate is severely allergic to cats AND dogs (breaks out in huge painful hives, sneezes non stop, face swells up) and we have 2 cats and a dog. He just takes antihistamines. Like, a LOT of antihistamines. He figures if that’s the worst he has to endure for the love he gets back from them, it’s worth it. SUCH a great co-Dad. They divide their time sleeping in my bed or his every night.

Suck it up, Calvin! The only thing worse than being allergic to your girlfriend’s cats is NOT HAVING CATS.
