Blake Lively named her daughter James because ‘I liked having a boy’s name’

Blake Lively was a flurry of activity and costume changes yesterday… for no real reason. She was promoting The Age of Adeline in NYC, and she made stops at Good Morning America, Live with Kelly and Michael and Sirius Radio, just to name a few. Each stop involved multiple costume changes. People Mag did a breakdown of all of her costumes here. Anyway, I don’t really like any of these looks, but if you’re making me choose… I guess the pink/lilac Cushnie et Ochs pantsuit is my favorite? Sure. It’s better than the other stuff. The bright turquoise and yellow ensemble is Roksanda Lockwood Resort 2015. The quilted-looking grey and maroon suit is Marc Jacobs.

So, with all of those costume changes and all of those TV and radio appearances, you would expect that we would be knee-deep in Blake quotes, right? Not so much. She’s been talking a lot about her sweet baby James and motherhood in general, but nothing earth-shattering. While on GMA, she talked about why they named their daughter “James,” saying: “It’s a family name, and I liked having a boy’s name.” Yeah… I’m a fan of the unisex/androgynous baby-name as well, but I still believe Blake just named her little girl “James” to be “different” and “whimsical”.

When Blake went on Live with Kelly & Michael, she joked about how Ryan Reynolds smelled like baby poop (ha?) and when asked if the baby takes after either parent, Blake said: “I think she looks like her daddy. I want a maternity test!” Here’s the video of that interview:

They’ll probably call the child Jamie though.

Agree with you on the Cushnie outfit being the best.

Meh she’s having fun with it.

  2. Shambles says:

@ the header photo: Is she graduating with honors?

  3. BooBooLaRue says:

What in god’s name of airline hostess is she wearing?

  4. kri says:

Tbh, her only talent is wearing clothes well. Other than that, she’s just another not quite mediocre actress. But congrast on the baby. I’m sure she is adorable.

  5. INeedANap says:

That poor baby is going to get pimped out in an updated Kardashian style.

  6. Kiddo says:

She’s wearing a nautical flag! LMAO Tommy Hilfiger or Ralph Lauren Home Designs for the shore!

    #Nautica

  7. Josie says:

She’s the “Cool Girl”, guys. Non threatening to the dudes.

  8. FingerBinger says:

That lavender outfit is not a good look on her.

    • FLORC says:

The color isn’t great. And i’m not a fan of the cut of the coat or high waisted pants. If those changed it might be nice.

I love her 1st dress, but the coat seems excessive…

  9. meme says:

    dang, those are clown clothes.

  10. mememe says:

James isn’t strange at all. I’ve heard it used as a girl’s name before…so much so that it’s weird people think it’s weird.

    • Erinn says:

I personally like it. I haven’t heard it on a girl before, but I’m fond of it. I might have a slight penchant for things that are a little different, but not wildly odd name wise, given that I don’t have the usual spelling of Erin. But I like androgynous names, and old fashioned names, mostly I hate the upswing of the ‘trendy’ name where every kid has the same name with a slight variation. The names were great at the start, but they ended up with every possible spelling or pronunciation of the same name that even something that started our unique ended up over played.

I still love the line on Disney’s Hercules where Pain and Panic were like “Hercules is a suppperrr popular name right now. Remember a few years ago when every other boy was named Jason and every other girl was named Brittany?”

    • FLORC says:

I’ve heard the name james used for girls. it’s cute. Lincoln too.

  11. Lama Bean says:

I think the Roksanna Lockwood would actually be really cute without the coat. Oh wait–is the coat supposed to be the main attraction here????

  12. taterho says:

Good lord Blake. I think Bea Arthur’s GG wardrobe is haunting you.
RUN! Hit it with a stick!

  13. Scarlet Vixen says:

Don’t hate me, but I kinda like them all. If Angie or Cate Blanchett were wearing any of these outfits half the people who post on here would LUV THEM SOOOO MUCH.

I’m named after a male relative, and while noone can ever pronounce or spell my name correctly I do appreciate how unusual it is. People compliment me on my first name all the time, which is kinda weird, but flattering. Good job Mama Vixen.

    • Jegede says:

      +1
Wait for them to come @ you. lol

    • oneshot says:

Angelina would never be seen dead in that much eye-searing colour (or outfits that busy, actually).

Cate’s taste tends more towards elegantly quirky, not, well, this.

    • sills says:

Agree they’re interesting looks. But then the same outfit can sometimes look quite different depending on who’s wearing it. ‘Wearing the dress’ vs ‘the dress wearing you.’ Some people (like Cate B) just have an energy or aura where they can pull off looks that not everyone can. Dunno if I’d put Blake on that list.

But she’s a very pretty girl with a gorgeous figure and at least she tries to step out of the sartorial box.

  14. veronica says:

I have a traditionally male name (my mother didn’t know it at the time) and it took a long time for me to be OK with it. I was always mistaken for a boy which was really hard in a shy and bullied kid. I am, and will forever get mail addressed to Mr ***** and people always ask to talk to my husband when they really want to talk to me. These are the reasons I chose a very girly name for my daughter when she was born. No confusing the name Lilian/Lily! In her position, it won’t be as difficult but I still feel for the kid. If she chooses a “normal” life, having the name James will be a bit problematic.

  15. Meatball says:

So many outfit changes and they all look awful. That pantsuit is the worst. The sleeves are too long, the pants are too long and high waisted. She is very tall and wearing heels so I don’t understand how it doesn’t fit.
If she had worn that’s dress in the header with a black or navy coat, it would have looked much better.

  16. SofiaS says:

    She’s so funny!

    • Camille (The Original) says:

I think she came across very well in that interview – charming and nice. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion.

  17. Lee says:

if Kim Kardashian had changed so many outfits in one day, people would bash her as an attention seeker, but since it’s Blake Lively she is praised as a style icon.
I don’t like one single outfit. As usual, too much going on.

  18. Benchwarmer says:

I think Blake is a unisex name. I happen to love that name for a girl especially. I like boyish names for girls. I never considered James a girls name though. I like Jamie for a boy but not for a girl. I think James for a girl is pretty and she’ll probably start a trend of girls being named James. Who knows, James might be the next Emily and Ava. My name is Loren which is the masculine way of spelling it and as a child I hated the spelling and wished it were the normal girl way of Lauren. Now as an adult I appreciate that aspect and like that it’s a boy’s name, so Blake might be onto something however it may take years for her daughter to appreciate that gift.

  19. Coco says:

Wtf is she wearing? Her outfits are hideous, terrible taste.

  20. Regina Phalange (formerly Kara) says:

Ooh, I like the Marc Jacobs.

  21. Amanda says:

But if she had a boy, would she be willing to give him a girl’s name like Susan? Probably not.

  22. RobN says:

I’ve gotten sucked into a ton of Mad About You episodes, lately, and just realized that Helen Hunt’s character is named James. Generally called Jamie, but Paul would use her full name any time he got exasperated with her. It was a really popular show in it’s day, and I don’t remember anybody ever questioning the name or treating like it was odd.

I’m willing to go with any celebrity name that is at least a real name.
