Star: Scarlett Johansson hates living in France & it’s destroying her marriage

wenn22214538

From the beginning of Scarlett Johansson’s relationship with Romain Dauriac, it just felt like there was something shady going on. It was weird, because Scarlett could presumably date whomever – I’m sure she had no lack of potential suitors, and she was never billed (nor did she ever come across) as particularly “desperate” or “stupid in love.” Following her divorce from Ryan Reynolds, she dated randoms and Sean Penn, and at first I just thought Romain would be one of those randoms, lasting for a few months and then fading away. But then she started bragging about living in France with him and then she got knocked up and… I guess Romain is sticking around. But the whiff of “Why are they together?” has stuck around. So this week’s Star Magazine story is very, very interesting…

Scarlett Johansson is the picture of happiness as she promotes Avengers: Age of Ultron, but multiple sources say that behind the scenes, Scarlett is becoming increasingly unhappy in her marriage to Romain Dauriac, whom she wed in October 2014, just one month after giving birth to their daughter. It’s not so much Romain as it is his home country!

“Scarlett’s dream of living in Paris and keeping her Hollywood career going has turned into a bit of a nightmare,” says a long-time pal. “She’s had a very hard time adjusting to living in France full time. Romain is adamant on staying in Paris, but Scarlett is homesick and miserable. Plus she doesn’t feel as safe there as she does in the US. Now that she has a baby, safety is her first priority.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

I think most of Scarlett’s family lives in New York, and from what I understand, Scarlett still maintains a home in New York. She probably has a place in LA too, God knows. She gave birth in New York and stayed in the Hamptons for a few months after baby Rose was born. My point? When has she even really been in “living” in France? Then again, when Scarlett wants to, she can really fly under the radar, so maybe she’s been in France this whole time. Or is this story just a convenient excuse for why ScarJo and Romain are already kind of over?

Pfffft it’s her husband’s refusal to wear socks that is destroying their marriage.

  2. RJ says:

    He’s creepy looking

  3. Freebunny says:

He is the one looking miserable.

  4. InvaderTak says:

    Eh. Sounds like total speculation.

  5. Loopy says:

He looks like the serial killer version of John Malkovich.

    • zinjojo says:

I will never unsee this now!

    • Lilacflowers says:

John Malkovich isn’t a serial killer? OH wait, I’m just confusing him with the part I saw him play The Infernal Comedy.

    • mia girl says:

That’s like a serial killer version of a serial killer version of a human.

What I mean – Malkovich is one of MY FAVS (I lusted after him for a while and have seen Dangerous Liaisons more than I care to mention) – but Malkovich already looks like he might have you for dinner with a nice Chianti and fava beans!

    • littlestar says:

      Totally.

    • launicaangelina says:

John Malkovich looks like the serial killer version of John Malkovich. O_o

    • meme says:

Indeedy he does. He always looks way past miserable too.

  6. QQ says:

The whole thing sounds Flimsy but Scarlett Being Scarlett we might never even know

*imagine Obligatory commentary about how her hair has me completely Crazy In Love*

    • littlestar says:

Yeah, her hair looks great in the above photos. And her body is banging right now! I can’t stop looking at the pictures of her, and I am NOT a Johansson fan.

      • QQ says:

me neither but like her hair has been SO bomb since she had that baby , just badass, her face looks gorgeous too, her body.. just all cylinders

  7. enya says:

Gah, but that hairstyle is terrible. What is she doing with her hair??

  8. Seraphina says:

Some people have affairs that may destroy the marriage and some have real problems that they cannot over come which leads to the demise of the relationship. Scar-Jo’s is living in France. We all have our crosses to bare.

  9. Lizzie says:

How is living in Paris more dangerous than living in New York or LA?

    • JENNA says:

You can tell this story is BS.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

I don’t know specially that they don’t live in France anymore since more one year

    • Sofia says:

That could be just about perception. You usually feel safer in places you know better, because they are familiar. When in a new city you become more cautious because you have less references. That’s what I would take from this, because Paris (the area where she probably lives) is hardly dangerous in comparison with New York or LA.

    • oneshot says:

I’m seeing a very oblique reference to the Charlie Hebdo shootings and other anti-Semitic attacks against Jewish people in France (Scarjo having very publicly identified as Jewish). Natalie Portman was asked whether she felt safe being in Paris in her recent THR interview, looks like Star just decided to make something of it with another actress.

Though I don’t see how living in Paris is a hardship for a multi-millionaire, I mean if that was my main problem in life I’d be disgustingly lucky.

      • Sofia says:

And even if being Jewish was a problem for many, somehow I find it hard to believe that most A list celebs would feel it because they live in a bubble. No one thinks about their religious beliefs, people just see the STAR.

      • iseepinkelefants says:

The Gendarmerie are usually posted in font of Jewish buildings (the army police with the machine guns) plus you have those guys usually walking around Notre Dame and the like and it is a bit uncomfortable at first. One of my boy toys lives next to Natalie Portman (and Karl Lageriled) in the 7th. If you’re in that area I surely doubt you feel unsafe. But as a Jew Natwlie Portwmn can’t exactly say Paris is safer. I mean the Jewish centers in NY don’t have posted guards outside. Maybe if she lived in Marais, in the Jewish areas, with the armed guards, she’d change her tune.

      • paleokifaru says:

Do you think most people identify Scarlett as Jewish though? Portman for sure because she references it and Israel a lot. I am inclined, again it seems!, to agree with Sofia that most people just see STAR. And in that case I would think Parisians would be less enchanted with a Hollywood actress than say New Yorkers. Is that the case? I mean Johnny Depp and the Jolie-Pitts can lead quieter lives over there so…

      • RdyfrmycloseupmrDvlle says:

@iseepinkelefants : Actually the Jewish Centers in New York City DO have armed guards guarding them. Every since 9/11 it has increased year after year. Now its very nearly a full time thing.
Im a Jewish Native New Yorker of 46 years.

    • Elisa the I. says:

My sister moved to France (near Lyon) 3 yrs ago and my ex is from Paris. So I have been in France a lot over the last few years and I felt absolutely safe there. This is BS. According to my ex, France is anyways the greatest place on earth, lol.

      • Jadzia says:

I feel INCREDIBLY safe in France. More so than I did living in LA, that’s for sure.

    • EN says:

That is what I thought too. The story is BS. I’ll take Paris over NY any day, safety-wise including.

  10. littlestar says:

Won’t lie, I have wondered what is up with these two and pegged them as a couple that would not make it. Negative Nelly here, but seriously. Their whole pairing is just odd.

    • minx says:

Me too, and I’m not sure why. It has to be stressful to marry someone from another country.
I just wouldn’t be surprised if they split.

    • laura in LA says:

Yep, agreed. And now, it’s time for me to do my body language assessment of their photos for clues…

  11. Damn says:

There were quite a few blind items saying he is only using her for her money and fame and in the past only dated wealthy women. Something is not right about the guy.

  12. Tiffany27 says:

There may be issues (I genuinely just can’t imagine Scarlett staying married), but this story sounds like total BS.

  13. lucy2 says:

She’s been in the news with all the Avengers stuff, this sounds like just a tabloid trying to capitalize on that.

  14. lucile says:

As a French, I truly understand her, It’s impossible to love living in Paris when you are used to live in the US. Paris is a complicated city to live in and she may think it’s too small and dirty for her.
    I don’t understand why she married him…

Natalie seems to like it because she used to live in other countries before.
(PS, Jews are not hated in France)

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I have never lived in Paris, but I have been there. I thought it was lovely. I think the story might be made up.

      • Loxa says:

I am from Paris but now live in London. It’s quite a different experience to live there and to visit it. Living in Paris can be quite tough. I for one was tired of the constant street harassment and the arrogant attitude. There are alao other more societal issues. This is of course my unique experience and won’t necessarily be that of others but I have no plans to move back.

  15. Sofia says:

Is it just my impression or people around here are kind of happy about this? *smirk* Gossip websites are the worst:D

  16. avyes says:

How is my comment stupid? Its the truth. There is tons of anti-semitsim in France and I do agree Muslims and Africans are also not liked there either. France has alot of racism going on there.

  17. JENNA says:

Nice generalization there. I have a friend who is muslim, she’s a teacher and is a law-abiding citizen. She doesn’t cause trouble.

  18. kai says:

Am I the only one who thinks he’s kind of hot with the short hair? Less hipster-ish, now he just needs to lose the moustache

  19. Loulou says:

I think since her defense of her Cola commercial, that she’s an idiot. And her first divorce was weird. I just think it’s funny that Halle Berry wanted so bad to go to France for security reasons whereas ScarJo states the opposite.

  20. laura in LA says:

Scarlett is a real New Yorker, though she recently bought another house in LA and has pretty good taste in real estate.

I can’t even imagine that she spends all that much time in Paris, whatwith all the Age of Ultron promotion. And where’s the baby in all of this? It seems if Natalie Portman can enjoy Paris, then why can’t Scarlett. Then again, maybe Natalie’s more in love…

As for Scarlett and Romain’s marriage, they always looked like an odd pairing and not a lasting couple.

  21. funcakes says:

He may be the nicest person you’ll ever meet by he looks pissed in every picture I’ve ever seen him in.

Scarlet always seems more concerned with appearance.
Hope I’m wrong and they last a long time for the baby’s sake.

  22. morc says:

This reminds me of her interview on Ellen where Ellen said “You live in France, and you can neither speak the language nor cook authentic crêpes, you failed completely” (paraphrased)to which Johansson answered “You sound like my mother in law” and before that talked about how she thought Paris would be this beautiful little sleepy provincial town.

I bet she thought she could come to quaint old europe and be revered as an actrice and the rude, vulgar french people see her as the mall brat she is.

    • Sarah says:

No French people I have ever met were vulgar or rude, having lived in Paris for a year and having visited 5 other times. Americans on the other hand…

      • Bob Loblaw says:

Oh spare me, there are plenty of rude French and Americans to go around, no one needs to pretend one group is so much less obnoxious than the other. Ask anyone in hospitality, the French are notoriously rude and abusive, the Americans are loud and uncouth. It’s not the nationality, it’s privileged jerks and they’re everywhere.

      • Sarah says:

@ Bob Loblaw : I agree, privileged jerks are everywhere, across all borders and all nationalities.

      • Hausfrau says:

        @sarah

        Sarcasm: look it up.

  23. iseepinkelefants says:

When you visit Paris, it’s great, when you live here? It sucks. Especially as an American. Me and my American friends usually get together once a week to moan about it. France has a lot of positives but the core things like the American need to make life as easy as possible is not a French concept. In France it’s to make everything as difficult as possible. Like you’re not living life if you don’t suffer for it. She’s rich so she doesn’t have the hardships that a normal person would have (going to the CAF office, waiting on the OFII) but little things; opening a bank account, getting a cell phone, having a washing machine that doesn’t take 5 hours, these blow up.

I don’t usually comment on regular people’s looks but I have to say all of the hot French men here and she chose one that wasn’t? Seriously France is the land of hot, nothing but hot men everywhere, and well endowed, it baffles me that her husband does not look French whatsoever. He doesn’t even have the Frnchmens flare for style (all of these dudes dress better than me).

    • Bob Loblaw says:

My Dad was born in France, and lives there off and on, it is very different from the U.S. but I love it. I understand why you’re frustrated though, he’s gone through some serious tangles with the French legal system getting his dual citizenship straightened out. And we did a lot of driving around and it got so much easier after he was able to get a French bank account and debit card, before that getting thru tolls and getting gas and petty transactions were such a hassle. Also watch out for roadside cameras, they’ll mail you the (expensive) sneaky speed trap tickets and they will revoke your license very quickly if you have too many.

    • EN says:

The US is all about convinience and you do get used to it quickly. Especially, if you are an American and never knew anything else. Then it might be almost impossible to adjust to any other country .
But I like Continental Europe, it reminds me about the value of things (because everything is so expensive, lol) and makes me live a less “consumerish” life and appreciate timeless things like art, history. philosophy, love , friendship more. In the US we are too taken with working and consuming, there is no time or room for anything else.

    • Dizzy says:

I agree totally. I lived there for 4 years and it’s no picnic when you’re a foreigner. The men are gorgeous there but this guy isn’t at all.

    • Jadzia says:

Maybe your problem is that you are hanging around with a bunch of Americans “moaning” about the horror of living in Paris. France is far from perfect but I think I’d be pretty unhappy if I devoted that amount of time to everything that is negative about this country.

  24. Jackrabbit says:

She looks like Princess Charlene of Monaco with her short haircut.

  25. serena says:

What, she dated Sean Penn??? For the love of god why do beautiful women flock around him!? Am I blind and missing something or what?

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Apparently he has a massive dong and knows how to use it…..and being that ScarJo put her foot in his lap in public i.e. clung to him as hard as she could after her divorce, I’m inclined to think it’s true. But yea, I think it was 2011ish that they dated…went to a White House Correspondant’s Dinner together….she had her Black Widow haircut (short hair)…..

  26. Amy M. says:

I live in NYC and have been to Paris many times to visit my father’s family (and have French citizenship). Both cities have safety issues and neither is perfect. I have been catcalled in both. Just this week a crazy dude was running around Manhattan attacking people with a hammer (google, it’ll come right up). Cops finally shot him barely a block from my office in Midtown right near Times Square when he tried to attack the female cop.

I’ve heard stories from family in France recounting getting robbed or harassed on public transportation (Paris metro is a shady place at night which in contrast to the NYC subway which I have taken past midnight by myself and I’ve always felt relatively safe). Just this week my French cousin who was on business in NYC was telling me how and he and his friends got knifed and assaulted by a bunch of guys on l’ile de Re (not Paris, an island off of La Rochelle) one summer and his story was hair raising. France isn’t any safer than the US and vice versa.

    • Question now says:

Yep, France is a lot safer. Less murders. Less robbing and mugging. Better social benefits and better social safety nets so you have less people who become criminals to survive as they do in the US.

  27. Millie says:

Those familiar with Edith Wharton’s _The Custom of the Country_ (she will play Undine Spragg in the film) will recognize a bit of life imitating art here. I wish them well but they don’t look very happy here.

  28. Sara says:

OMG, international relationships are super hard. Even if someone has money I think it’s still really hard. I feel for her.

  29. Bobby says:

I went to France once and one of my friends I was with got spat on simply for being an American asking for directions(in french no less). I myself of mixed racial background was mistaken multiple times for Hindi and middle eastern(believe me you don’t want to mistaken for them in that country).
