‘Jurassic World’ beat expectations & made crazy money: did you watch it?

Chris Pratt

Jurassic World easily won the weekend box office to become the highest global opening box office of all time and the second biggest opening domestically. A bunch of scientists are upset about the film’s inaccuracies, but audiences don’t really expect a history lesson with their summer popcorn flicks. I didn’t make it to the theater this weekend but hope to eventually watch Chris Pratt and the raptors. He did well on the press tour and completely refrained from making degrading remarks about any of his co-stars. Pratt took to Facebook after dollar amounts hit the internet: “On behalf of everyone involved in the making of ‪#‎JurassicWorld‬, and believe me there are thousands of us, I want to say thank you … Thank you, thank you, thank you!” How big was opening weekend? Dinosized:

Obliterating all expectations, Universal’s Jurassic World roared to a record $204.6 million debut in North America and $511.8 million globally, rescuing the action-adventure franchise from the brink of extinction 22 years after Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park first hit theaters.

The $150 million tentpole, bestowed with an A CinemaScore, proves that dinosaurs are every bit as potent as superheroes: Jurassic World’s estimated weekend bests the $191.3 million launch of sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron last month to bite off the No. 2 domestic opening of all time, almost matching the $207.4 million launch of The Avengers in May 2012.

Globally, the movie posted the largest weekend bow in history, eclipsing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 ($483.2 million) and becoming the first film to ever cross $500 million in one weekend, thanks to an international haul of $307.2 million from 66 markets, the second-biggest foreign opening after Deathly Hallows 2 ($314 million).

“This is absolutely a four-quadrant movie and is working on so many levels. The release date was awesome, and everybody stayed off of our date,” said Universal domestic distribution chief Nick Carpou.

[From Hollywood Reporter]

This movie was always going to be a hit, but Universal is thrilled to see it overperform. And why not? Men (and women) want to see the action. Women (and men) want to see Pratt. Everyone loves raptors, and the nostalgia factor pulls in older moviegoers and their kids, who watched the movies years after the fact. Expectations were for $125 million in North America, but audiences arrived in much greater numbers. This movie easily wiped the 2nd place domestic opening weekend record of Age of Ultron, and some analysts believe final weekend results could surpass the first Avengers and take top prize.

Universal is holding tight before announcing more Jurassic, but it should happen. Pratt spoke to Entertainment Weekly about his love for the original films. He feels like it’s “fate” to star in this film. Pratt also said he’s signed up for sequels: “They have me for I think 38 movies or something.” His planned Hollywood exit won’t be happening for a long time.

Haven’t seen it yet.. but will sometime this week. Glad it was not one of those superhero films. I heard the story was not that great.. Dinosaurs were the film. But I loved the first one so I’ll go down that memory lane. Congrats to Chris. He is on a roll.

It has been reported that Chris has already signed for the next installment. I hope he doesn’t get caught in the money trap of just doing franchises. But the money will be good so I guess take it while you can.

No, too much going on in Chicago, with the Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup the Chicago Blues Festival and The season finale of the Game of Thrones.

    • delphi says:

      GO BHawks! 🙂

That being said, I was there Saturday in full IMAX, surround sound, 3D glory. And I loved it. The sneaky Jeff Goldblum cameo was fab (subtle), as were a lot of the throw-backs to the original. No, it wasn’t scientifically-accurate, but it was still a great way to burn a couple of hot, icky hours. Plus, one can’t deny the appeal of Mr. Pratt’s bubble butt in 3D.

I missed Sam Neill, though. He’s a forever dong fo-sho.

  3. teatimeiscoming says:

I watched it. It was fun, would watch again.

But Bryce Dallas Howard was horrid. They should have swapped her and Judy Greer’s characters; at least Greer wouldn’t have been so wooden.

    • Elfie says:

Nepotism has hindered so many good films with bad casting.

    • Josephine says:

Bummer about Bryce. I like her and I think her face is captivating.

      • Miss M says:

I saw it and i like Bryce. But i watched this movie with a nostalgic mindset.

      • V4Real says:

I think Bryce suited the character just fine. I also loved that her character wasn’t just some beautiful woman waiting to be saved by the hero hunk. She held her own against Pratt. I also loved her bravery of (without giving too much away) what she unleashed during that incredible fight scene.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Josephine, who wrote: “Bummer about Bryce. I like her and I think her face is captivating.”

Agreed. I saw an advance showing of “Jurassic World” last Thursday.” I liked the film and would see it again, but this was not the film or role for Bryce. I agree with the poster up stream that Judy Greer would have made a better lead.

I loved Bryce in the Clint Eastwood film “Hereafter.” She gave the best acting I’ve performance I’ve seen from her to date.

      • teatimeiscoming says:

I have seen other movies she’s been in, and she’s been OK. I just don’t think this particular role was a good fit for her.

I DO want to know who made the heels she was sprinting around in. They didn’t break, and she didn’t complain about them, and they didn’t fall off. I mean, great advertising for them.

    • hoodie13 says:

yeah she was bugging me so much in this movie. Would have rather seen someone else in her character.

Overall I think the movie is super entertaining although everything seemed a little over the top at times but I definitely enjoyed it and would watch it again.

      • V4Real says:

Aww, I think she accomplished what she was meant to accomplish. She wasn’t likeable and she had people wishing she would get eaten by the dinosaurs. I was one of those people. I saw it on Thursday and took about 18 teenagers with me. At the showing I was in the audience was very vocal in wishing she would be eaten. But past half way of the film they were cheering for her and she was like the second hero of the film.

    • Sarah says:

She really was wooden, wasn’t she? I was shocked because I loved her in The Help. The younger of the kids was annoying too. I think he was likely supposed to be on the spectrum somewhere, but they never really said it. Just made him super annoying and act much younger than he looked. We really enjoyed the film, however. Pratt was good and the dinosaurs were great. Here’s to Raptors, T-Rexes and Mosasaurs! Plenty of nice references to the original.

      • holly hobby says:

That’s not her in the Help. That was Jessica Chastain.

      • Josefa says:

        @holly hobby

Bryce played the racist villain who ate sh*t.

      • Cory says:

She has a 1950s acting style. Very children’s show style. It was really weird. But if you enjoyed the earlier Jurassic Park films, you’ll like this. Love the dinosaurs.

    • Alex says:

I agree about swapping her role and Judy’s role. Bryce was really stiff and it came across even worse opposite someone like Pratt.
Otherwise the movie was really enjoyable. Scared the living day lights out of me several times lol

      • teatimeiscoming says:

Greer is pretty funny— love her as Cheryl/Carol/Cherlene on Archer— and I think she and Pratt would have played off each other’s comedic chops really well. (Though, admittedly, the comic aspect of that pairing may have distracted from the dinos.)

    • RTMS says:

Agreed on so many counts. She and Pratt had no chemistry and Pratt was to doom and gloom the whole movie to start anything. This is another Ellie and Grant breakup off screen in future movie. Can I at least beg that we don’t get any more kids ?

    • Kimmy says:

The storyline was ridiculous and Bryce Was awful. I found myself wishing it was Jessica Chastain several times. The movie needed more T Rex and less of the new Dino. But with that said….It was still fun to watch. I loved watching the 1st movie in the theatre when I was little. Chris Pratt did was Chris Pratt does and the raptors were great.

    • holly hobby says:

I never understood why BDH was a thing. I never liked watching her and she’s starred in so many bombs. Why is she still being cast in the lead? Yes her dad is Ron Howard but you don’t see Rumer Willis getting all these shots to fail.

Sorry if they wanted a facisimile Jessica Chastain, they should have hired Jessica.

    • Entrystep says:

I like Bryce, she is a good actress. IMO

    • Veronica says:

I love BDH, but I do think she’s better suited toward indie film. Not that the script really gave her much to work with, but blockbuster movies aren’t really her fare. The quieter, more subtle roles tend to work for her better.

  4. Lilacflowers says:

Mosausurus! Raptors! Indomitablesaurus! Pteradactyls! T-Rex! Drogon! HODOR! HODOR! HODOR!

Just had to put that in there.

  5. Izzy says:

Haven’t seen it yet, but a couple of my friends said they enjoyed it despite laughing out loud at some of the more ludicrous parts. And are scientists really expecting accuracy? It’s not like we even know everything there is to know about dinosaurs, but it’s Hollywood, so maybe they should lower their expectations a little.

“I don’t always run screaming from genetically engineered dinosaurs, but when I do, it’s in three-inch stiletto heels.” -The Most Interesting Man in the World

    • TheOriginalTiffany says:

It was great! Even we chuckled at a couple of things, I felt like it was super entertaining and got my money’s worth. No boring, slow filler, just dinosaurs. Really, the best kind of summer blockbuster flick.

    • Beckysuz says:

Yeah I loved the movie, but WHY did she not take those bloody heels off? Who runs from dinosaurs in heels?

      • Lilacflowers says:

Well, since we can suspend disbelief enough to buy that she ran from dinosaurs, we can suspend it a bit more to buy that she did so in those shoes. But no way was D’Onofrio outrunning anything in those pants.

      • Veronica says:

I think it’s intended as a running joke on how ridiculous it is. I mean, they even lampshade it in dialogue…

  6. Katie says:

Yes! It was a good summer movie. It’s everything you expect in a scifi movie. Don’t go expecting great film making or a realistic movie. Go and watch it and have a good time.
The scientists probably need to loosen their bow ties a bit before they watch this movie. Audiences certainly aren’t going to watch a documentary. They’re going to have fun. (Don’t be offended by the bow tie comment. I’m married to a chemist. I adore scientists and their bow ties.)

    • Esmom says:

Yes, they could take a page from the seismologists who went to see that earthquake movie…I heard an interview with one of them who said they had planned to cringe at the inaccuracies but instead just relaxed, had some popcorn and enjoyed a decent action movie.

I didn’t see it my one of my sons did. He said it was better than he expected, which apparently wasn’t much!

    • Sherry says:

It was a great summer movie! I took my 3 kids (18, 13 and 11) to see it in Imax 3D and was so glad I did! We all had a blast!

  7. truthSF says:

Yes, and while official #’s has yet to be posted, it will take the record breaking OW spot away from The Avengers, according to BO tracking as of Sunday night/Monday morning.

    • V4Real says:

I’m a huge Marvel fan but yet I’m not disappointed JW beat them out. I’ve been a fan of the Jurrasic movies and this one didn’t disappoint. Some people were complaining that it started out a little slow but all the,Jurrasic films started out that way.

I was hoping that Pratt character would have turned out to be Hammond’s grandson all grown up but they didn’t go in that direction. The last 10 or 15 minutes is amazing. I’m going to see it again.

  8. Sixer says:

When Sixlet Major was wee and in his dinophile phase, he watched the old movies on DVD over and over and used to earnestly tell people, “I trust in nature,” because Dickie Attenborough had told him to trust in nature.

If nobody says “I trust in nature,” in this film, I shall sulk. And I am going to see it this weekend, en famille.

  9. Loulou says:

It was a lot more violent than the original! That surprised me. But overall, good popcorn flick.

    • mytbean says:

Oddly enough more violent but less gory. I liked it.

But I talked to two people who went to see it opening night and one person said that it was ok mainly because the effects were great but that they were disappointed because the dialogue was bad and that the story was lame. (the dialogue wasn’t bad to me… but the story was definitely contrived and predictable and to me the effects weren’t any better than any other cgi movie out today)

Another person said it was just flat out bad and that the theater she was in was full of people who actually jeered. In retrospect that really surprised me because the theater I was in last night had an audience that applauded at the end.

I kept expecting Pratt to show a little of his normal boyish goober character but it didn’t show up once. He played self-assured to a level of almost arrogant but it was fitting for his character. And Bryce was on target as well as she was supposed to be someone impersonal and unsympathetic. There was practically zero character development in this film so the fact that we got that much is saying something.

Anyway – The film was ok. Not great – not bad – just ok. Like most posters said, if they go in and just relax for the ride (and take a break from the super hero films) then people will be Summer flick satisfied.

  10. Helle says:

I’m gonna go see it tonight with my 3 sons. That’s the beauty of having sons. I get to watch all the movies I’m actually too old (46) to watch, like X-men, transformers and disaster movies 🙂

    • Josephine says:

I watch all of those movies, too. My husband says I have the movie tastes of a teenage boy, and he frankly loves it. In my defense, I see just about anything, but my favs are the superhero/blow ’em up movies.

    • Katie says:

You’re never too old or too girlie for a good superhero, scifi, or disaster flick. I’m 34 and have no kids and I’ll never stop watching them!!! Congrats on the three sons ❤️ I do have three tiny nephews that I can’t wait to take to things like this.

    • V4Real says:

      @Helle

You are not too old to watch comic book films. It’s for all ages, especially if you grew up reading the comics. I was an adult when me and a male friend went to see Finding Nemo. I have a nine year old son who wasn’t interested in seeing Maleficient but that didn’t stop me from going to the theater. I will probably be 80 and still going to see films such as the ones you have mentioned if they interest me. It’s for the kid inside all of us.

    • mytbean says:

      Agree Katie x1000

Going to see a movie you think you’ll enjoy without the need for approval (or even the company) of your peers is called being an adult. And you can eat your desert before your dinner if you want too as well!

      😉

      Being grown up rules.

    • Anne tommy says:

I went to watch it with my daughter (36) so it’s not just a boy thing. Really enjoyable and Chris and his jeans on a motorbike was very nice.

  11. cleveland girl says:

I saw it yesterday and HATED it. It was really scary, and kind of sad, and lacked the charm of the original movies. Chris Pratt is hot tho.

  12. Lucy2 says:

I was supposed to go on Sunday, but got too busy and had to cancel. I’m amazed it did so well, but good for them!

  13. Valois says:

It seems to be extremely sexist, which isn’t surprising, but still disappointing.

    • V4Real says:

How is it sexist? And please don’t say it’s because Bryce character didn’t remove her heels.

Or you don’t like that all the dinosaurs were females.

    • claire says:

Speaking of sexist: Men (and women) want to see the action. Women (and men) want to see Pratt. Disappointed to read this here.

    • Lilacflowers says:

A woman was conducting business deals and managing a multi-billion dollar firm, which involved some knowledge of science, people and property management. Once things got moving, she also did almost everything the military trained man did, and she did it in a skirt and heels. Putting the final, life-saving heroics into play was her idea and she executed it while the man hid behind a wall

      • I Choose Me says:

Thank you! Also, she was a boss with a gun and saved him from a pterodactyl attack. I like Bryce and I think she did a good job with what she was given. Her character is supposed to be stiff and anal retentive.

    • The Original G says:

I actually think that the director hates women. The female lead was portrayed as a stupid business woman, a charmless teammate, who was scientifically clueless and when things went really wrong, had no plan beside looking up into Chris Pratt’s eyes. She was a CEO portrayed as a total twit twat. Her character was a horrible person, incompetent, uncaring, uninformed, disinterested in her nephews and her clinging to her heels instead of ever making a decision to be effective.

And, yet, we’re supposed to think she’s redeemed by Pratt’s interest? It was very disappointing. All those dinosaur loving little girls…….shame.

      • V4Real says:

What, are you sure it’s the director that hates women? Her character was no more clueless than the scientist that knew what his genetic creation was capable of being that he was the same scientist from the first movie when shit hit the fan. Or no more clueless than the billionaire owner who said he wanted better dinasaurs and such a pro at flying a helicopter though he didn’t yet have his license. I don’t see your complaints about them. And let’s not forget about Vincent’ s character and his macho BS.

Let’s not pretend that we live in a world where women are so connected to children that their mothering instincts kick in just because they are around children. Bryce charter was a top exec where kids were not a priority to her. Had this character been a man you would not be complaining. Why is it that people always find fault with the female characters and not the males?

      • The Original G says:

Yeah, V4Real, they were all badly written characters. Bryces character was a moron. All the other characters suffered the consequences of their bad decisions. She got the guy by being a twit.

      • Veronica says:

I don’t know if Spielberg hates women, but it was pretty sexist. The “emotionally stunted female scientist ” trope is common to the point of ridiculous, particularly since this one ended in her blatantly pursuing family through Owen (THE ONLY GOAL THAT MATTERS FOR WOMEN).

This being said, I didn’t find her character particularly incompetent, just…out of her element in some scenes? Things were running pretty smoothly for the most part under her command. It fell apart because of Dr. Wu’s genetic design of Indominus Rex – something that she wasn’t entirely responsible for considering she could not have possibly known about his black market military trade.

    • Valois says:

V4Real, I haven’t seen it yet (that’s why I wrote “it seems”, because most of my friends were rather disappointed), so I can’t comment on my impression. A friend of mine shared this article. http://www.themarysue.com/jurassic-worlds-mother-of-a-problem/ Sorry for being lazy and posting some links, but I don’t want anyone to make fun of my English.

I’m interested in hearing different opinions on that matter. No need to make fun of me though.

      • V4Real says:

I would never make fun of someone ‘s English, especially if it’s not their first language. Your English seems fine to me.

As for the article I bet a woman wrote it. I don’t agree with it. What’s going on lately, is every movie that features a woman as one of the main characters going to be labeled as sexiest. Like I said just because Bryce character is a woman doesn’t mean she has to have mothering instincts. It reminds me of the old way of thinking just because you’re a woman you have to have kids or why aren’t you married yet. Nothing is more sexiest than that.

      • Valois says:

But isn’t the whole point of the article that not wanting kids isn’t something that should be described wrong or as if your personality lacks something?

Anyway, I won’t get to see it before it is released on DVD, I’m looking forward to see whether I fully agree with to criticism.

      • The Original G says:

I never said she should be mothering. Her character failed to be responsible and have even common courtesy towards her visiting nephews. Why are you taking a film so personally?

      • V4Real says:

No please don’t play that card; I’m not taking anything personally. I’m simply replying back to people who replied to me. And my last response before this one was to Valois about the article not you.

  14. Tig says:

Not my cup of tea- didn’t see any of the other ones either- but good for cast and crew!! And wow to the director- his second(?) directorial effort, and first was Safety Not Guaranteed. I liked it a lot, but it’s a big jump from its budget to this. Totally off topic- any idea as to whether Michael Crichton’s estate gets a share of this installment? What an imagination that guy had!

    • Luca76 says:

Yeah I’ve never watched any of the Jurassic Park movies not sure why but I can’t imagine this would be as good as the original.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Definitely not as good as the original but better than the third one which featured Tea Leoni and William H. Macy bickering with one another for two hours.

    • StormsMama says:

MC must get some royalties in that it’s “based on the original stories by…” Or “inspired by the original story by”

  15. MeloMelo says:

I really liked it, although, I cringed at certain scenes. But overall it was a fun movie. Made me want to go visit.

    • cleveland girl says:

I really wanted to visit the petting zoo the most!!

    • GlimmerBunny says:

THERE IS NOTHING I WANT MORE THAN TO VISIT JURASSIC WORLD. Seriously, I’d happily be eaten by a dinosaur if I could see them live first. And yeah, it was a great movie. My favorite of the year, and I LOVED Mad Max.

  16. Mia4S says:

Meh, I’ll see it at some point. When people are telling me “don’t go in expecting a great movie” that’s not a selling point. Too many great blockbusters have proven we don’t have to settle when spending our money.

Oh and before someone makes the argument to you that it must be good because of all the box office? Give them one word: Avatar. The biggest movie of all time by a huge factor is freaking Avatar. How much money a movie makes has nothing to do with how good it is.

  17. Lilacflowers says:

I learned that when you are being chased by dinosaurs, high heels take on super powers and not only don’t sink down into the mud, sort of impaling you there, as usually happens to me, but they give you super speed.

    • Katie says:

Totwlly need these super hero heels for work

    • LookyLoo says:

And they never fall off, either, or slow you down in any way. Wasn’t that idiotic?? What was the point of that? Every woman I know would have kicked those suckers off if anything (let alone, a dinosaur) was chasing her. Just stupid (and sexist – women are superficial and value vanity above all else).

      • Lilacflowers says:

SPOILER – She outran the dinosaur and not just any dinosaur, but a big T-Rex and she started just a few feet in front of it.

      • V4Real says:

I was also saying woman kick those heels off but I think the director wanted it that way knowing that the audience would complain about her keeping her heels on. I don’t think it was sexiest but just for laughs and to annoy. Everything these days is being called sexiest. My complaint with the heels is that she didn’t fall down much if at all.

Spoiler alert, sort of. I also noticed that when the team went in to track and destroy the super Dino they didn’t take the shot when they had it. Instead they stood there in awe that the thing was communicating with the raptors. So can we get a “you stupid macho men, shoot, take the damn shot.”

    • Antonym says:

Seriously! After the movie my first comment was about the heels. I’m forever wearing out mine, so whatever company makes run-through-mud-outrun-Trex-superspeed heels, I’m spending my money for those.

    • I Choose Me says:

Hahahaha. MTE. I figured those things were super glued to her feet. She didn’t trip once. I do know a couple of ladies who can run in heels like nobody business. Heels higher than those. You couldn’t pay me to run in heels.

    • Lilacflowers says:

I want to know how the heels managed not to sink down into the dirt. I wear flats to funerals because I find it extremely awkward having to pry my shoes out of the ground.

  18. Prairiegirl says:

Hubby and I took the kids to see it. Great for them, entertaining enough for us. Limited cursing, no sex, people killing other people. That’s pretty much what you want in a family film so no surprise it made, and will make, a ton of money.

But how do the backers of those parks manage to get insurance coverage? Good grief!

  19. inthekitchen says:

I saw it. It was okay. I don’t recommend seeing it in 3D though – no real point (like Gravity, e.g.) and it seemed slightly off in the perspective a lot of the time, which I assumed was problems with the 3D. At certain times Pratt had an enormous hand or head and it looked strange.

The movie itself was amazingly blood-free for a dinos eating tons of humans (and other dinos) movie, which I thought was interesting. I guess they wanted a lower rating? Also not quite sure how the woman in white outran a T-Rex with a skirt and 3″ heels on…but okay. Also, by the end of the movie, all I could hear when Pratt spoke was his Lego Movie character which got distracting.

Finally, I wondered if Pratt ad-libbed his line (paraphrasing): “he didn’t even eat them, he just likes to kill for fun” and was really talking about himself. Seemed like a big FU to the folks complaining about his hunting habits. Curious!

    • mytbean says:

It’s funny you said that – but I was sure, after Pratt mentioned the killing for sport thing, that we were going to discover that they’d mixed the dino with human dna. I think that would have made things much more interesting but I think it would also have run the very probable risk of being contrived PETA propoganda.

    • tracking says:

I agree 3D not worth it.

  20. Jenns says:

It was a fine. But that what was so disappointing. I feel there have been some really great movie reboots(like Mad Max) and this could’ve been another great one, but they made it way too cheesy. And used way too much CGI.

And Bryce running around in those heels is just absurd. Not to mention the sexist cliches, like Claire being frazzled when a bug is flying around her and Chris Pratt crushing it with his bare hand.

  21. Beth No. 2 says:

I’ve watched it – cringingly bad dialogue, cardboard characterisation, tired tropes about female corporate bitch turned screaming damsel in distress, and a predictable plot but I enjoyed it. The set pieces were well done and some of the dino action were so WTF and outrageous (e.g. the ending), you can’t help but roll your eyes and clap your hands gleefully in equal measure. It is hilariously bad, but it is entertaining and that’s all I want from this movie.

Also, are the figures reported estimates of actuals? I’m kinda disappointed Jurassic World didn’t take the domestic box office weekend crown as well and rain on Marvel’s parade. Boo.

  22. Marie says:

I saw it and didn’t like it at all.
The scenario was boring, the dinosaurs and special effects basically made the movie. Chris Pratt was okay I guess. I totally agree with the other reviews above that said that you don’t have to settle for a mediocre action movie when there have been some great blockbusters.
Also, I hated the way they had the female character run in a ripped pencil skirt and high heels during the entire movie. I thought it was kind of a misogynistic move.

  23. The Original Mia says:

When the best parts of your movie are the raptors, then there is a problem. It was meh. Boring, cliche characters. Nonsense presented as plot. It’ll make a ton of money and have a sequel, but goodness gracious, no one should be proud of this film. It made Avengers look like a masterpiece of writing and editing.

  24. aang says:

Saw it and was not impressed. The dialogue was so forced and cheesy. The acting was just ok, the story with the kids and their family was so unintegrated that it was just distracting. D’Onofrio should have been given more to do, at least he has some charisma. The female lead was awfully written and her interaction with Pratt’s character was just embarrassing. The movie was really missing intersting characters like John Hammond and Ian Malcolm. And Sam Neill was more believable than Pratt. All the forshadowing at the beginning was like being hit in the head with a sledge hammer. But the Dinosaurs were really great.

    • Lilacflowers says:

D’Onofrio was having enough difficulty moving around in those skinny pants.

      • aang says:

lol, you’re right! And he stole the embryos to make soldier dinos. Will the sequal be raptors vs. ISIS?

      • A.Key says:

        raptors vs. ISIS

        haahahahaha

but the movie’s that bad that it actually might come true

  25. QQ says:

Didn’t watch and decided I couldn’t possibly take that in any serious way once Chris was “taming” the dinosaurs or when “they made one up” (which they are selling in Toys R Us alongside the other real replicas which ‘Murica Cause I can foresee stupid people teaching their kids the Made Up one is as real as the rest

I Told My Bf to go alone with his yelly brother and if IF it was outstanding maybe id go if he needed to rewatch

  26. EN says:

    > And why not? Men (and women) want to see the action. Women (and men) want to see Pratt.

To be honest I didn’t want to see Pratt. Definitely didn’t want to see Pratt and would’ve preferred somebody else. But In the Jurassic movies it doesn’t really matter who plays the title role. It is not about the humans, other than humans running away really fast from dinos.

It looks like Pratt is now a stand in for a Harrison Ford type of actor – isn’t he also doing Indiana Jones soon? Star Wars next?

    • lisa2 says:

But Harrison did other movies that were great before he went the Action route. I think Chris has stolen Channing Tatums slot. They are about the same age and same dynamic.

I hope he will branch out and not get typecasted. But it is too late I fear.

    • Kitten says:

My boyfriend wants to see this but I have so far refused because I hate Pratt.
However, he went to see Mad Max with me so I might have to give in…

    • aang says:

      Pratt is no Harrison Ford.

    • A.Key says:

Pratt is a poor actor and I hate the fact he’s going to be the next Indiana Jones.

  27. Felice. says:

I loved it besides them using endangered great white sharks as bait.

    • Amberica says:

I thought about that, but decided that in this alternate reality in which there are no ethical issues associated with cloning dinosaurs, they’ve probably gone ahead and cloned endangered species as well, so no big deal.

  28. Bethie says:

I didn’t, but my kids and husband did. And a bunch of other people I know. They all loved it. I opted for the house to myself. Even Chris Pratt can’t compare to that.

  29. Yeses says:

I’m not even embarrassed to admit that I watched it twice, once on Thursday night and once on Sunday night,. if you can’t tell from that alone, I really loved the movie but my ankles hurt from watching BDH run in heels, all the time…Chris Pratt…I am too old to be fan girl’ing over him but hot damn!!!

  30. DiamondGirl says:

Didn’t have enough Chris in it; hated those kids and their solo adventure (some of the best parts of the original was the interaction between Sam Neill and the kids); hated Bryce; hated the whole D’Onofrio storyline.

    Such a disappointment.

  31. Sayrah says:

I am so glad I went. Sure there were some laughable moments but it was lots of fun to see. I’d only ever seen the original, just over and over. Pratt was great and I jumped on my husband at least 3 times. See it in 3-D if you can.

  32. Stargazer says:

Did I see the same “Jurassic World” movie that all you negative Nellies saw…?? This movie was fun, exciting, suspenseful, and head and shoulders above all previous Jurassic Park movies. Who cares about scientific accuracy … this is a summer blockbuster, escapism, fantasy, a ‘gobble your popcorn – forget your worries – sit back and enjoy the ride’ kind of film. If not entirely plausible, it was still entertaining as hell. Went with a dozen family/friends (ages 18 to 75) and we all loved it. Will definitely see it again.

And ….. Bryce Dallas Howard ‘s character running in those heels..? For those seeking authenticity and realism — it’s doubtful she would have had the presence of mind, time, or opportunity to make a wardrobe change while searching for her nephews, trying to avoid a 50’ homicidal killing machine, and trying to protect thousands of tourists in the park. Perhaps she took lessons from Jamie Summers (t.v.’s The Bionic Woman). Jamie could run…very, very fast…in 6 inch stilettoes. Actress Lindsay Wagner once said it was THE hardest thing she’d ever done in her entire acting career.

    • EN says:

      > doubtful she would have had the presence of mind, time, or opportunity to make a wardrobe change while searching for her nephews

To begin with she would’ve been eaten pretty fast, heels and all.

  33. Ruyana says:

I saw it Friday and enjoyed it thoroughly. Well, except for the youngest kid. I don’t know if it was the script or his acting, but he made me cringe and I didn’t like him at all.

I go to the movies to be entertained and forget the troubles of the world for a while. This movie delivered and I’d see it again.

  34. Incognito says:

We saw it this weekend. We really really liked it. I think I like the first one better but I thought this was a good sequel.

I thought there were a few nods to some of the things that the audience was thinking- like the heels thing. Owen told Claire she wouldn’t be able to make it through the jungle to find the kids in those heels. It’s a movie. If I’m suspending belief to imagine a park with genetically engineered dinosaurs, I will accept a woman running in heels. I know there are women out there who can do it and do it fast. I think I rolled an ankle just watching Bryce Dallas Howard doing it! I was annoyed by the older kid. He kept doing the Justin Beiber pout and it was driving me a little batty. I wish there was more character development, but the humans aren’t the main feature for this movie. It’s all about the dinosaurs. And I did connect with them. The scene when Owen says they are hunting for sport (trying not to spoil anything) made me tear up a little.

It’s a popcorn movie. I give it a certain leeway as such. I’m a huge Marvel fan, but I kind of find myself rooting for this movie to break the record.

  35. iheartjacksparrow says:

My complaints: Too many humans, not enough dinos; too many dead dinos; the older boy was a jerk and I wanted to punch him in the face; they have this entire scene of the young boy saying their parents are divorcing, but no resolution at the end; the dying Brontosaurus they were petting looked so fake; not enough Compys (only in the petting zoo); as others have already said, Claire runs everywhere in heels; and Owen must spend a lot of time practicing rolling under and squeezing through closing doors. But I did enjoy the movie and most of the dinos looked beautiful.

    • Katie says:

I’m guessing there was no resolution to the divorce story because they are trying to save something for a sequel

      • iheartjacksparrow says:

I have to disagree. If that was a real park, who in their right mind is ever going to go back? I think we’re done with any ancillary character from JW (with the exception of Dr. Wu who escaped). And the place was more or less destroyed, so unless they want to feature a rebuild (which is a waste of money as, again, who would go back?), the next movie will take place elsewhere. Then you have all the lawsuits, which will bankrupt InGen. It seems obvious that the sequel will center on the dino technology that was taken off the island. I guess they could go back to Isla Sorna since, presumably, there are still dinos there.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I think any future Jurassic film will focus on the issue of using designed dinosaurs as weapons, which is what Wu was doing with D’Onofrio’s character. And B.D. Wong is the only actor in both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World.

  36. A.Key says:

    Horrible.
I can’t believe it’s so popular, people really have no taste whatsoever these days.
And Bryce Dallas Howard can’t act for sh*t, she was as bad as your Z-list soap opera actor on TV. Pratt gave a poor performance as well. Basically his muscles and great CGI carried the movie.
    I repeat, horrible.

    • V4Real says:

People have no taste. People as in the people on this post who liked it? Wow just because we like something that wasn’t pleasing to you doesn’t mean we don’t have taste. Maybe you’re the one without taste because you didn’t find a scfi action flick enjoyable. It wasn’t meant to be an Oscar worthy movie or a masterpiece but a fun summer blockbuster. So my tasteless ass enjoyed it.

    • Sayrah says:

Lmao! I like highbrow dramas too, but I can enjoy this for what it was. You must be a barrel of laughs.

    • Lilacflowers says:

When it comes to movies about dinosaurs eating tourists, I expect the CGI to be the show. I’m not expecting something on par with Daniel Day Lewis.

    • tyl says:

Well, I don’t like any movies that feature Brangelina but I don’t diregarded anyone who likes them and their poor movies. Jurassic Park is a classic. I think some of the films the Brange have made are awful and Razzie worthy. Jurassic Park is meant to be fun.

  37. Cara says:

Saw the movie in an advanced showing on Thursday, with my preteen daughter, her buddy and my husband- my daughter and I had been counting down to the opening for months! We all had a ball- maybe it was partly nostalgia, as we are Jurassic Park geeks, but is was FUN! Sure, character development was limited and story was implausible- but we weren’t there to see Beaches! 😜 Loved it!

  38. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

No. I haven’t seen the first four films in the series, so I wouldn’t know what was going on.

    • De says:

@Mispronounced, you could easily watch it without having seen any of the other movies. There are some mild references to the first movie, but nothing that would be confusing.

  39. TotallyBiased says:

I preferred Tomorrowland. The guy who made that should have made Jurassic World.

  40. elfer says:

Atleast Jurassic Park is directed by a REAL director. Unlike someone who used an old man’s story for Oscars and turned the movie into a pile of stinking crap.

  41. Calcifer says:

Film critic Erik Kain sums it up for me on Forbes.com when he compares Jurassic World to the original Jurassic Park (1993):

‘I’d go so far as to say that it’s not even the same genre. Whereas Jurassic Park is a science-fiction horror film—with at least two of the most frightening, tense scenes in modern cinema—Jurassic World is an action movie, through and through, pure and simple.’

And while I am able to like a good action movie, I LOVE a good science-fiction / horror movie, that’s where the true suspense is (see also ALIEN (1979))

  42. O_o_odesa says:

My husband and I went this weekend with another couple and loved it! However, in the audience we noticed someone had brought their 6-7 month old baby. Is this a thing now? Bringing babies to summer blockbusters? I had to work my butt off to find a babysitter and I found it annoying to have to sit by a crying baby.

    • iheartjacksparrow says:

I remember when Piranha 3D came out a few years ago, there was a guy sitting a row in front of me who had brought along his child, probably less than two years old. Throughout the entire movie, the child moved from seat to seat all along the row, while he totally ignored the child. I assumed that a ticket was cheaper than paying a babysitter. But I thought it was incredibly rude. Not to mention, should a child that young be watching people being ripped apart by hungry fish?

  43. UrbanRube says:

Bryce Dallas Howard was jaw-droppingly awful – she almost ruined the film for me. That said, I did enjoy it, but I’m a big dinosaur dork, so.. I thought Chris Pratt was fine and I mean mighty fine to look at, but there was little chemistry between the two. Their final lines of dialogue were just laughable. Again, though, I thought it was a fun summer movie, not too much gore considering all the violence, and the park itself was spectacular. If the place were real and not constantly teetering on the possibility of turning into a hellish death trap, I’d be there as soon as I could save my bitcoins and get on a boat.

  44. Veronica says:

I saw it yesterday, and it was just as delightfully ridiculous as I expected, but also…strangely clever in a self-aware sort of way? Like, how f*cking meta is that scene when Claire is talking to the investors about having to go bigger, badder, more intense in order to wow visitors when the supremely awesome has become banal? Because while JP was groundbreaking, everything that followed couldn’t capture the spirit of the original (not even The Lord World novel is as good as the first) because the shock and awe of OMG DINOSAURS is gone. The only thing they could do to keep it interesting is up the ante, go more ridiculous at every turn. It’s like Spielberg was basically winking at the audience, saying, “In a way, this is your own fault, you know?”

  45. paranormalgirl says:

Did a family thing with the paranormal kids and husband. It was a fun film. I really enjoyed it.
