Michael Fassbender doesn’t read newspapers & ‘I don’t have a TV either’

FFN_Cannes_MacbethPC_CHP_052315_51752281

More than a decade ago, it was perfectly acceptable to say “I don’t even own a TV” and expect that statement to be some kind of indicator of your superior cultural sensibilities. Back in the ‘90s and even the early ‘00s, television was a step down, it was the lowest common denominator, it was where actors, writers and directors went when they could no longer do films. But at some point, TV changed. And how we think of television changed too. Maybe it was The Sopranos, maybe it was the rise of comic book movies aimed at tweens and teens. But there has been a cultural shift and it’s no longer a “thing” to sniff your nose at television. But not for Michael Fassbender. You see, because Fassy doesn’t even own a TV. He doesn’t even read the newspaper. He said so in a new interview to promote Slow West overseas. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

Riding a horse in Slow West: “First of all, I was introduced to a horse called Awesome, and I wasn’t so awesome on Awesome, so they introduced me to Arnie, who was a lot more chilled and easier to ride. He made up for my lack of riding skill, so it was a lot of fun.”

Whether he gets depressed with the dark subject matter of his films: “I do get depressed, but fortunately it’s for a short time, especially with Steve (McQueen), where you film over short periods of time. It was 25 days for Shame, 35 days for 12 Years A Slave, so you just have to hang in there.”

He doesn’t pay attention to the press: “It’s whatever people write or say, it doesn’t change my day-to-day activities. I’ve kind of stopped reading most press of late, including newspapers, which is kind of weird. I try not to spend too much attention on good or bad (press), because if you live by it, you die by it. I don’t have a television either, the less distraction, the better.”

Why he’s drawn to dark roles: “I’m a complicated person. I think human beings are complex, and I like to play characters that don’t hold answers for the audience. I don’t like to be on any moral crusade. I just want to present them in a provocative way, with all the bells and whistles.”

[From The Belfast Telegraph]

I really don’t understand how someone can go through life without a television these days. I mean… is he just doing everything online? Is he reading news online and watching TV shows online? That’s one possibility. The other possibility is that he just decided to live in a bubble of no newspapers, no news sites, no reading the press about himself and no TV. What does he do for fun? READ A BOOK? Damn, bro.

I have a television, but I watch more things online (and also read newspapers online). Television is for breaking news and special events.
He also seemed to be mostly talking about the press about himself–not reading that, I would think, would be a way of preserving his sanity!

    • perplexed says:

That’s how I understood his comment.

He probably has an Ipad on which he watches Netflix. The tv repeats everything that is said on the internet so its not really necessary to have a tv theses days, especially if you’re single.

    • qwerty says:

Yeah in no way I took it as slamming TV. I’m sure he watches all the good shows. As do I, and I don’t have a TV either. Well I do actually, I’ve just never used it once cause it lacks some cable and I’m too lazy to buy it lol

    • Liberty says:

Yeah. Half the people I know and work with don’t have a tv, just watch things online sometimes. We have two, and yet tend to be much more online as well, just a few good favorite shows on the actual tv.

Esp as much as MF travels, and probably is busy actually living, working crazy hours, going out vs staying in, I can see this.

I just spent a few weeks essentially without tv access. and really got a lot done, did more going out, etc. Didn’t miss it much. BUT of course I barely turn it on in the summer anyway, so probably not a fair test.

  2. ToodySezHey says:

He’s to busy traveling, shooting films, and boning hot chicks yo bother with tv. If I had money like that I woukdnt need one either, I’d be too busy traveling and watching live events like operas, tennis, and formula 1 races.

  3. Damn says:

    Bullshit.

  4. nic says:

I agree TV is a distraction, any time I’ve lived without one I have gotten so much more done. Not now though, just watch movies on the laptop and drool over Fassy.

  5. TracySmiles says:

I bet he just wrecks sweet shops all day #wishitwaswithme

    • als says:

Let’s call time of death on this myth of him as sweet shop wrecker. This man is just full of BS.

    • Andrea says:

I beg to differ, I think he has and will wreck plenty of sweet shops. 🙂

  6. lowercaselois says:

I know many people who say they don’t read newspapers or watch TV, but they read and watch on their cell phone, I pad, tablet or lap top.

  7. AG-UK says:

You don’t need a TV to watch TV these days most “younger” people I know don’t own TV’s especially in the UK where you have to pay for a TV license

  8. Julie says:

I haven’t had a tv in my house for over twenty years. Fassbinder echoes my thoughts on it – it is distracting. Not bad, just not what I want when I come home from work. I can describe every tv show and know who the actors are in them. It is completely possible to be culturally aware without a TV. And now that shows can be streamed in the computer, I even watch an episode now and then. Different strokes, F isn’t saying he is better, only that TV is distracting to him.

  9. Beth No. 2 says:

“What does he do for fun?”

I can think of many things to do for fun with Michael that don’t involve TV, newspapers or books. 😉

I haven’t read the full interview but I took his comments to mean he doesn’t read “press” about himself, not that he stays away from news altogether. I also seldom watch TV drama serials but it’s not cos I’m snobbish about their quality; I just don’t like to be beholden to a certain schedule (be home by 8pm every Thursday night to catch this series on telly!), or spend time on series that span several seasons. I prefer to devote 1-2 hours to entertainment and be done with it, which is why I prefer movies, documentaries and news segments.

    • NUTBALLS says:

“What does he do for fun?”

Alicia could shed some light on that, I presume.

  10. Kiddo says:

I think he’s talking about newspaper articles and press that is specifically about him.

    • ncboudicca says:

I hope that’s what he meant. Maybe he has a PA write up a daily news events summary for him? 🙂

  11. Norman Bates' Mother says:

I don’t watch tv either but it’s not something I use as a cultural statement or anything to brag about. The truth is that internet has made me too lazy and I don’t want to rely on a tv schedule when I can find everything online without ads and watch it on my own terms. It’s gotten so bad that I have trouble watching a movie in one sitting, when I’m not in the cinema and it’s actually something I try to work on. Internet = way shorter attention span. But I read news every day and I try to be up to date with everything what’s going on.

His answer sounded to me like he doesn’t read anything about himself or the show business, not the news, but if he meant that he lives in a bubble and doesn’t even reads news online, it’s definitely not something to brag about.

I don’t understand how anyone can live not knowing what is going on in the world. My friend’s mother doesn’t even know who is a prime minister of her own country and in the last presidential elections she voted for the candidate, whose program would possibly ruin her life, because he was the only candidate she heard about. When someone says they don’t even read news, I automatically assume they are just as clueless as her, so I hope he didn’t mean that.

  12. Katie says:

But what is all his furniture pointed at?

  13. Moxie Remon says:

It gives me anxiety to even consider living like this.

  14. Artemis says:

What does he do for fun?

    Banging his co-stars.

  15. Dhavynia says:

Maybe he stays in bed having sex….all day

  16. Miss Jupitero says:

I have a screen which I never hooked up to the cable. I use Apple TV to watch netflix, and I have HBO. Then there are dvds or downloads from Apple. Then of course books, piles of them. It’s a way of life for me. But TV? No. Mostly I hate the commercials. But also at this day and age I can watch what I like when I like so I don’t see the need.

  17. Em' says:

I spent many years without a TV and I was find. Now that I have one, most of the time I just use it to plug my PC so I have a bigger screen when I watch movies or TV shows 🙂
And when I actually watch TV I realise that I have spent most of my saturday afternoon watching sh!tty reality TV and then I feel bad about myself 🙁
As Fassy said “the less distraction, the better”, the Internet had already ruined us enough as it is.

  18. manta says:

I haven’t owned a Tv in almost a decade. It has nothing to do with feeling superior or being a snob. I just prefer it that way ( having experienced both). I read papers, books and I’m addicted to radio.
I don’t even watch Tv programmes on line or upload series. When there’s major news, hearing or reading about it is enough, images don’t add much.
So I know the names of politicians, ministers, their policy but not necessarily their faces or the color of their ties or their hairstyle. I don’t see how it makes me uninformed.

And I don’t feel the urge to see/ know everything the moment it happens. I’m the dinosaur who buys or rent DVDs when they are out. I don’t care being late to the party. A fine series is just as enjoyable years after the entire world has already seen it.

    • Gemma says:

@Manta. I am exactly like you 🙂 Radio (and podcasts), news papers and books are everything. And DVDs are very convinient as I am too lazy to room the internet looking for links to tv shows.

  19. Kiki says:

He doesn’t own not he read newspaper. You know what that’s fine, I am sure he can find people who are the same thing. I Really like this man because he seems to be a humble person. With that being said, since he doesn’t worry about press but his girlfriend does. How wonder how that is going to work out? After all she did say she want to be ” more famous”.

  20. Peach says:

I agree with everyone. I took it as he doesn’t read stuff about himself, not that he doesn’t keep up with the news or current events. Most people get their news from the internet rather than tv now anyway. Charlize Theron said Michael always had his tablet with him on the set of Prometheus, pulling up youtube videos, etc. to show her.

I still own a tv but I watch it less and less as I spend more time on my laptop. Plus, Michael said he hates being a couch potato. Even when he’s home he’s out in the pubs/bars in the evenings. He’d rather be shooting pool or playing ping pong (or hitting up girls lol) in a bar than home vegging in front of the tv.

  21. lunchcoma says:

I think it’s worth considering that Fassbender probably isn’t home all that often given his shooting schedule. He didn’t say he has any objection to watching his hotel’s TV, and he also didn’t say he didn’t have an Ipad.

As for the newspaper bit, I believe that. Lots of people don’t keep up with the news, and he’s never struck me as being political or even as having vary widely ranged interests.

  22. NUTBALLS says:

I’m sure he gets his news online and does just fine without a TV. He travels a lot and if he’s not a couch potato will entertain himself other ways. I rarely watch my TV and just catch things on Netflix, Amazon or Vudu. My kids mainly use it for Netflix and DVDs. I haven’t had cable since 2006 but since I have a cell phone and tablet, I have enough of a time-suck with that.

Furniture has other uses than pointing us toward a TV, dontchaknow… 😉

  23. Andrea says:

Having lived in the US all my life up until 3 years ago, TV is a HUGE thing for American households. Now in Canada, most younger people do not own a tv or have cable; it is seen as a luxury, for rich people. People are always shocked to know we have a tv and cable (it gets me through the long winters). Most watch shows on a tablet/laptop via illegal streaming and even then they don’t do it often. He probably does the same since he is so busy. He also is probably picking up women on his down time. I don’t blame him, I wish he’d pick me up for a one nighter. LOL

    • Guest says:

One can get a combination of basic TV , telephone and internet services for under $100.00 CDN from Bell Canada, Rogers , Shaw etc in Canada(including PVR). For a long period of time we led the world with being the most connected via the world wide web.

      • Andrea says:

I pay $135 for PVR and cable through Rogers—I am not saying our internet is bad—it is by far better than anything I had in the states; and a lot of people I know are connected on the internet. I am just saying that all my co workers and people younger than me that I know (I am 34) do not own tv or have cable. It also may be a hipster city thing, I dunno(I live in the city too!).

  24. Mia4S says:

I really think there’s no story here. James McAvoy mentioned something about texting videos back and forth with Fassy. He’s online, like most of us. I have a TV but it barely gets any use.

  25. Juls says:

He was spotted with a newspaper just some says ago in NYC… Ahahah!!
But his answer sounds like he doesn’t read stuff about himself, probably he was asked about the Sony leak. However these are all things that he has already said in old interviews. It’s true that he doesn’t have a tv,it has been pointed out by journalists he brought to his home. Why should he own a tv?When he doesn’t work,he likes to travel.

  26. Lola says:

I have come to realize that when you read about an actor, you could get your info from one source but I guess to get the entire picture you need to go elsewhere once in awhile. So here it is … no newspapers? Well, wasn’t he photographs not so long ago with one? So … yeah….
No TV, I buy it … but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t watch it, he did not say he did not watch it … hulu … netflix … is he ever in his home? Does he not work? Are there no TV’s where he stays while filming? Please…
The whole thing about the internet is funny … reading lately of actors that “say” they don’t pay attention to what ever it is written in the internet about them … would imagine that if they have PR people, the PR people do read it. I would assume it’s part of their job.
So, his PR people are aware of that interview his GF gave were PR Relationships was mentioned, his people are aware at what is written in some chat rooms and boards and get’s discussed later on in his interviews, for example. So sure, give him the benefit of the doubt, he does not read … but if he has a PR, they do.
PS. Always thought the whole thing of him doing Jobs was to show – what’s his name, Sorkin? – who he is. As in “you don’t know who I am … I’m going to show you!” type deal.
Also, we can agree to disagree but I have always thought life was simple, people want to make it complex for some reason … but that – I know – is an entire – and different – convo …
    Hope you ladies are well!

    • Kiki says:

I agree with you 100%. But I think the interviewer misconstrued what he said or Michael Fassbender should be a little bit more specific. Because people tend to make this out of context. And also, would you hat to be a PR person, I sure would?

      • Lola says:

@Kiki: I did not understand your last question. Would you have to be a PR person? Are you talking about me? No. I am not a PR person. If the question is would a PR person know about these things, then I agree with you.

    • Juls says:

Has he said he never watches tv? No. I don’t understand the tone of your comment.
“is he ever in his home”?
I don’t think he has spent an entire week in London, this year.
“So, his PR people are aware of that interview his GF gave were PR Relationships was mentioned”
      What are you talking about?!
“, his people are aware at what is written in some chat rooms and boards and get’s discussed later on in his interviews”
I have no clue what you’re talking about, but when actors promote low-budget films, generally they devote one morning to speak with the press (usually in their hotels). It’s pratically impossible that publicists check the reactions around the web and then ask journalists to discuss what they’ve read.
His publicist works for other directors and actors. I highly doubt she has time to waste reading “chat rooms and boards”.Publicists are paid for their intermediary work with the press. If his publicist is aware of something,it’s what important media outlets write about his client, not the “gossip chat rooms”.
In this interview there’s nothing I’ve not already read in other interviews, even the old ones when he was promoting Shame.
“Always thought the whole thing of him doing Jobs was to show – what’s his name, Sorkin? – who he is. As in “you don’t know who I am … I’m going to show you!” type deal.
He accepted his role before the Sony emails came out and because Danny Boyle insisted on having him.

      • French Cruller says:

If you don’t think publicists check out public reaction to their clients then it’s clear that you don’t know very much about PR. It’s called Public Relations for a reason. So yes, that includes forums/message boards, comment sections of blog posts, etc. His publicist most definitely “has time to waste” checking those things out. That’s part of what she is paid for. That is her job. And when she, herself, can’t do it, then someone under her does. That’s part of PR. And his PR people are everywhere he is mentioned.

Your previous post, by the way, sounds eerily similar to a post written by someone who definitely isn’t you in a popular Fassbender thread on a rather notorious forum. Almost verbatim.

“He was spotted with a newspaper just some says ago in NYC… Ahahah!!
But his answer sounds like he doesn’t read stuff about himself, probably he was asked about the Sony leak. However these are all things that he has already said in old interviews. It’s true that he doesn’t have a tv,it has been pointed out by journalists he brought to his home. Why should he own a tv?When he doesn’t work,he likes to travel.”

Lol. Interesting. I won’t post the post I’m referring to. I’m sure you’ve read it already.

      • Lola says:

@Juls: I don’t have a tone in my writing. The questions were rhetorical questions. As intended to simplify the reader of my post, but I guess you did not understand that. Or who knows, English is not my native tongue, maybe I thought the concept would translate and it did not with you. From what I have read, he has done TV, so he has not watched himself on TV? Not even with friends to say, “look at me at this gig”? Mmmm…
If you want you can go to LSA, they have interviews (cut and paste) of AV and Madalina G. I believe the fist one in on Appreciation Thread IV and the second one on Appreciation Thread V. Go check it out! 🙂
I don’t like to dismiss people, so I give everyone the benefit of the doubt and read opinions and analysis. You can always learn something new. It sounds like you are dismissing the people on chats and boards, I would not dream of doing that because those people ARE THE CONSUMERS! They pay for actors and/or celebrity products … don’t forget that, if the celebrity doesn’t make bank, what are the odds of them being hired? It’s a business.
And yes, I remember posting on JJ – you can’t read it know that whole thread got erase- using the moniker “Lola” on the Madalina G. thread and I – as others did – write something along the lines of “being happy for his nomination and that the true subject matter was not the story -what ever that was – with Madalina G. but about 12 YRS and if we ever abolished slavery or do we call it know human trafficking.” I had seen some of the press of that movie prior to Kaiser divorcing Fassbender 😉 and heard no mention of Human Trafficking, others in other posts were writing the same … comes Oscar time, do you remember Steve M speech? So yeah, I do think PR people read everything. Heck the whole working answer that he gave … Kaiser posted the news AFTER that had been a convo over at LSA and IMDB. I just pay attention at chronology.
Do you know how security breaches work in big companies? You think the press got the news before the people in the industry or after? Again, rhetorical question.

      • Lola says:

@ French Cruller: Are you referring to PF? I have not read that in awhile. I read that apparently it’s all about his GF now, even though she has a thread of her own.

  27. Becks says:

All I have to say is that he looks so good in that first pic 😍
    Thanks for the Fassy post!!

  28. kronster says:

My God his teeth are sharp! He looks like an animal – a very sexy beast 😀

  29. Solanaceae (Nighty) says:

I’ve already spent a whole year withot turning on the TV, sometimes it’s so depressing and programs are geting worse and worse… I used to read books, paint, go for walks, travel and surf the net… I really believe we are definitely the “couch potato” generation… So I get him…

  30. EN says:

I have TVs , my husband and kids watch them but I don’t. I spent 8 years in dorms without a TV and never got used to watching it again. I can’t take the commercials every 10 min. I read everything online and I watch YouTube and watch a few movies a year, usually on transatlantic flights and that is it.

  31. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

It’s not that hard to imagine. If I was him I’d have better things to do than watch TV and read newspapers too.

  32. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

“What does he do for fun?”

Sex, sex, and more sex. Then a book, some booze, some Candy Crush and then more sex.
