Pippa & James Middleton complete a 54-mile charity bike ride: no shade?

wenn22612946

Ugh, bike shorts are so unforgiving. Here are some photos of Pippa and James Middleton yesterday, doing the London to Brighton Bike Ride to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. Pippa has taken it upon herself to create a charity portfolio, just like her sister Kate. Only I have to say – it sometimes seems like Pippa does more actual work with her charities than Kate ever does. Pippa was appointed an ambassador for the British Heart Foundation last year or the year before.

This is the 40th annual London-to-Brighton Bike Ride and it looks like a lot of people turned out. The bike ride is 54 miles total, which… I think if the weather is good and you’re in good shape (like Pippa and James), a 54-mile bike ride is probably pretty pleasant. Pippa loves a good charity cycle – she biked 3000 miles coast-to-coast in America last year for charity as well. Pippa released a statement about this weekend’s ride, saying: “This event is testament to the fact that cycling is such an inclusive sport that everyone can enjoy. Through the money raised, the BHF can continue to help the millions of people affected by coronary heart disease – the UK’s single biggest killer.”

As for Pippa’s romantic life… I think she’s in a really weird situation. Nico Jackson has moved out of the country (he’s working in Switzerland now) but they’re still “together” even though they’re never actually together. And the engagement rumors have been happening for years now and there’s still no ring. As for James Middleton’s romantic life…his girlfriend Donna Air wrote an essay for The Telegraph last week where she described their life together. It was a weird read.

PS… as if we needed more evidence that Pippa has an ass of lies.

No shade here – this is what she should be doing with her “fame”, instead of being some kind of so-called celeb correspondent / writer / whatever

    • FLORC says:

I think she’s a nutritionist or chef now.

    • Entrystep says:

I have always felt that if Pippa were the one ,who attracted William and married him, that she would have hit the ground running and at least Tried to push herself more as far as Royal duties…even if William put up a fight to slow her pace.
      JMO

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I know this is unfair, especially when he is doing something nice, but something about James just sets off my douche alarm. Big time.

And yeah, that ass was padded Spanx.

    • HH says:

I will second that. The douche is strong with that one. His douchey presence is felt in EVERYONE single photo of him.

In regards to Pippa’s bum, I didn’t get the big deal AT the wedding. Why was it a thing? It looked flat then.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree that I didn’t see – at all – why her behind was such a big deal at the wedding. I thought it looked fine, but I didn’t see the spectacular.

      • perplexed says:

I think it was her dress that was nice. For a maid of honour dress, anyway. It fit her figure well. Those bicycle shorts are not flattering at all. But I do envy her athletic ability and stamina. I don’t get what she really does for employment, but it seems she does do something with her free time.

I don’t mind Pippa anymore. But James scares me for some reason. It’s like Pippa and Kate got the friendly face genes and he got the psycho face ones.

      • FLORC says:

To why her butt was a thing.
It was heavily covered Pippa’s bottom and skin tone was ideal. I think the tone was called mocha royal or something like that. Places started offering it. And the bottom was part of the “ideal” silhouette.
It was all the press, but Pippa still carries the torch.

And bike shorts are not flattering.

      • Entrystep says:

Poor James, he is probably a nice guy and he tries ,but he just comes off sort of ………….fill in the space.

I also think he might look better without the beard now, his face is not bad at all. He’s not wildly handsome but he’s an ok looking guy.

I have to give them both kudos on a 50+ bike ride for any reason… lol I would have fallen down in craps after 6miles. They do seem to be in very good shape and athletic.

P.S. Jame’s girlfriend Donna Air, gave an interview in a UK newspaper about how she and James spend their time together.

    • wendi says:

LOL – your comment about the brother!!

    • Dena says:

At least something good has come out of their hanger-on status. Don’t know how active Pip & James were in charitable works before the Middleton’s gained the public’s attention & if they are only doing high- profile events but good for them & the people who benefit.

    • Yellowrose says:

Apparently you’ve never done real cycling. Bike shorts have a sewn in pad, also called a chamois, to protect the groin area from sitting on a hard seat for hours. Feel free to google it.

And yes they’re not flattering. For those who do triathlons, the pad is not as thick, so it’s a tad more flattering.

  3. Betti says:

No shade on this from me – well done to both and I hope you raised a lot of money. All the Midds siblings are very athletic – i hated sports and even now stick to things like yoga. I should take up running or swimming but finding a decent pool for a reasonable price is next to impossible in London 🙁

Re: Pippa’s charity work. The only shade goes to Kate, who’s done less for ‘her’ charities in the past 4 years than Pip has done in the past year. Pip’s always done things like this for charities – she’s a regular marathon runner. Kate – when your charity ‘work’ is being overshadowed by your sisters, a private citizen, you know you have no game.

  4. Katie says:

She’s doing more charity work than her sister? Shade enough? Also, I love cycling. I am post double lung transplant by 15 months and it is definitely my favorite way to exercise. It’s easy to get a very thorough workout without the joint pain of running. It really is an all inclusive sport!

    • Casi says:

Katie, that’s good to hear that you are doing so well! My friend had LAM and received her lungs 3 years ago now. Such a blessing. I will say a prayer for you and your family and your donor and their family today.

      • Katie says:

That’s awesome!! I love hearing other transplant success stories! Congrats to your friend and thank you to all organ donors and families💖

    • SamiHami says:

Double lung transplant? Wow; you have really been through it! I’m glad to read that you are doing so well! Here’s to your continued good health (it’s early morning, so I’m toasting you with just orange juice). 🙂

    • Snazzy says:

Congrats on your good health! A double lung transplant and all – wow! Such a wonderful blessing indeed.

      • Katie says:

It’s a huge blessing and I try to take really good cRe of myself out of respect for what my family and my donors family have also been through!

    • Beth No. 2 says:

      @Katie

Wow, good for you and great that you’re still enjoying cycling! 🙂

And, no shade at Pippa and James from me.

    • ncboudicca says:

I love to hear of stories like these. Continued health to you Katie, and to your friend, Casi.

    • Murphy says:

My dog does more charity work than Kate. The statue outside my office building does more charity work than Kate.

  5. Kreacher says:

Really don’t blame her for the wedding padding. Especially considering these pics.

  6. InvaderTak says:

No shade at all. She and her brother do more than wills and Kate without having to be begged. The Middleton family like their athletics. Also a positive as there’s no glamour involved and a lot of prep.

  7. Eleonor says:

She is doing something ice with her fame, no shade from me!
    James mustache is glorious!

  8. Serenity says:

I know it’s for a good cause but girl has to up her sunscreen game. Her skin is looking rough! She better be careful or in a few years she’ll be in Sean Penn cured ham territory.

  9. FLORC says:

She’s doing something for charity. Good. I’ll shade a bit if she’s getting paid for this though. She already gets a fair amount of “freebies” for this.

Cycling isn’t inclusive. Different bikes, different styles. Wide variety in prices. If you don’t have what others have you can be very much singled out and excluded from groups and rides.
It’s an unfortunate truth. Though I guess it can be said anything is inclusive withing preset limits.

    • Esmom says:

Agree that cycling is not really inclusive, especially in the inner city.

No shade for her for doing the ride…although I do side eye the heavy eyeliner. The Middleton eyeliner is a pet peeve of mine, though.

      • perplexed says:

Their eyeliner is so heavy but it never bleeds. Why or how?

      • Lennox says:

I read somewhere that Pippa’s eyeliner is tattooed on, and I’m wondering if she, Carole and Kate got a 3 for 2 deal. Big mistake imo.

      • FLORC says:

        Lennox
It’s an internet rumor. Kate has been photographed more and hers is absolutely not inked on. It varies too greatly. Inside the water line to outside the waterline. Fully lined to half to quarter line. thickness of application. Browns to blacks. It all varies too greatly. I’m better Pippa didn’t ink either. Hers tends to vary as well and she’s been caught with minimal makeup and you ccan see there’s barely anything on her eyes.
Did the article also state they got a 2 for 3 deal?

It looks like they use liquid eyeliner. And that stuff applies thick and if you mess up it’s not coming off without a fight. sweating won’t do it. You need special remover.

    • Franca says:

But it’s so much more fun to go for bike rides alone. At least for me.

      • FLORC says:

I love bike rides at my own pace. I love instructing on stationary bikes. I love outdoor races. They all have their pros and cons. And it really depends on the type of day.

    • Hazel says:

Too true. A friend’s husband rides with a group that calls itself ‘the hammerheads’. They are a dead serious lot. On the other hand, any ol’ bike is fine for a leisurely ride.

  10. wendi says:

Say what you will about her but I think she deserves credit for the work she does for various charities. They both are so athletic and healthy looking and remind me of Kate before she lost all that weight.

  11. Jen43 says:

No shade. She has a great, healthy figure, paddies or not.

  12. TotallyBiased says:

Er, I don’t get the ‘a** of lies’ bit. Good bike shorts, what you’d typically wear for a 50+ mile ride, compress a LOT–like wearing two pair of spanx. Oh, yeah, and they are padded. Because otherwise ouch! saddlesore.

    • MinnFinn says:

+1 -Padding in bike shorts for long rides makes a difference so no shade from me either.

    • NUTBALLS says:

Same here… when you put the fun between yer legs, good padding is EVERYTHING.

As a trail runner, I fully endorse this type of fundraising — much more than standing around at garden parties eating caviar and drinking champagne.

    • FLORC says:

I’m back and forth on padding. Right seat it’s not needed.
      Sometimes it’s just annoying.

  13. Olenna says:

No shade? Well, I guess this is what ambitious, full-time socialites do.

    • hmmm says:

Amen! Imagine the amount of time you need to train. I cast shade at this type of event. You’re fit and you get to do what’s fun for you. And you get the glory. It’s like playing polo for charity. What a hardship! So very upper crust. Heaven forfend that they work with the disenfranchised, walk among them, maybe even (yikes!) touch them and converse with them.

      • Hazel says:

No, it’s possible for a working stiff to do this type of thing. I’ve run for 20+ years, both when working & going to school, and now while ‘just’ working (a regular 40hr week). In that time I’ve run 10 marathons & some 60 or so other road races. I also have a co-worker who competes in triathlons for fun.

  14. Elfie says:

She looks so old, she looks at least 45 in the face. Too much sunbathing and smoking, can’t believe she’s only 31!!!!!!!!!!

  15. wow says:

They do impress me with their fitness and by using their love of fitness and sport towards charity. This is a good look for them, figuratively. Definitely not literally.

  16. justme says:

She’s already raised over £15,000 for the British Heart Foundation — good for her!

    • Franca says:

What I don’t get about these charity fundraisers, £15,000 is spare change for these people. Do they actually donate money themselves?

      • perplexed says:

I’m not convinced Pippa and James are really that rich. I figure the Middletons look richer than they actually are.

I do think 15 000 pounds would be spare change for Kate and William though.

      • MinnFinn says:

Pippa did not give BHF £15,000. That was the total given to BHF by a variety of people who pledged to give a certain amount for Pippa and James’ participation.

  17. *North*Star* says:

That Telegraph piece was more than a bit weird. Kaiser, I think you are being overly generous with your description.

So….Donna and James don’t court publicity (her words!) then why the Telegraph article? Why the goofy “insights” into your life? And why do you push your daughter so much???? Something feels very off in that piece and I’ll leave it at that.

    • FLORC says:

I’ve never understood why some have to proclaim what should be obvious.
And going to the press to say how you don’t talk about your relationship in the press seems… counter productive?

      • sal says:

to say the least! this guy will do anything to get attention and publicity. I think he’s worse than Pippa in that regard.

      • *North*Star* says:

        Counter productive or denial.

And the piece had very little to do with or about James. Honestly it was mostly bragging about herself which is just weird. Maybe it’s just me but I tend to avoid the “I’m so fabulous” crowd.

      • Franca says:

The Telegraph has a section “My perfect weekend” and they get a different celebrity to write it every time. I think this was it.
Some come across as really great, like Sally Phillips, other, like Donna, quite pretentious, but it’s fun to read.

  18. TessD says:

“Donna Air: my life with James Middleton…” man, just the title alone!

  19. Liberty says:

Good for them for doing anything for charity.

That said, I will forever get a “reincarnated Boleyn family” energy from the Middletons. Had I been born a dog, I would probably be whimpering or growling and backing away into a corner.

  20. helen says:

I think it’s pretty awesome that Pippa did RAAM as a part of a team. There’s a big difference between team RAAM and solo RAAM. Definitely cool that she brought more attention to the race through the efforts of the team she was on.

    • RJ says:

I came on to say this. She rode a few hundre miles as part of a relay team. Still a pretty amazing accomplishment, but very different than riding 3,000 miles in 12 days.

  21. bluhare says:

I must be especially curmudgeonly today, because I don’t think this deserves praise as charity work. There were how many people doing the same ride, all benefiting the same charity? A lot of, or most, bike rides and fun runs benefit one charity or another, and if they count as charitable work, Mr. bluhare and I should be nominated for humanitarian awards. I never considered doing one of those doing something for the greater good; when I volunteered somewhere, THAT was when I did something to benefit others. These two do it to raise their profiles in a good way, IMO. If they were truly altruistic, they’d be actually mucking in at something not just riding a bike or doing a run.

    End rant. 🙂

    • FLORC says:

      bluhare
It’s about to get all curmudgeonly here!
      You’re not wrong.
There’s not much about this that’s selfless.
On 1 side it brings attention to a cause… But does it really? Or is it just boasting about what Pippa and James did?
And maybe i’m more active than some, but working out and doing races is fun with the bonus of money to a good cause. Nearly every race I sign up for is a fundraiser. Do I sign up because it’s for charity? No. I do it because it’s fun for me with the bonus of charity. And there are often celebs of some level there, but it comes off more they’re doing it for themselves and the PR.

There is something that can happen to show they are truly into supporting a cause because they care to without boosting their images. Repeat support. Stay active for a cause and donate your time that isn’t with cameras documenting you over the cause.
Like Miley. Take a step back because you detract from the good message.
People of fame do this often and you end up remembering the cause vs remembering the celeb that did something nice.

      • maggie says:

Well maybe it’s fun for them too! And for a good cause. They appear to be having a good time.

      • FLORC says:

        maggie
Not disputing that. Those events are so much fun. Sad fact is many would not donate without something in it for them.

    • RobN says:

Would you have even known about the event or the charity without their involvement? Exposure is everything when trying to raise money.

      • bluhare says:

Would I have known? No. But the thousands of people who rode in it didn’t either . Does the charity get more pledges because they rode? No clue. They might have got more if it were publicized before rather than after they did it.

She rode a bike in a ride/race that benefited a charity. Perhaps she got pledges for doing it. Great. I’ve done it too. And didn’t call it charity work while I was doing it.

      • FLORC says:

        Bluhare
I wouldn’t call it charity work either. Those vets outside my grocery store are working for donations. Those organizers to these events that volunteer their time to sort details or fill a cup with delicious hose water. When I show up to be part of the fun.

    • perplexed says:

I just find it hilarious that Pippa is doing charity work (and putting in a certain degree of hard labor by cycling) and Kate isn’t (when all she has to do is just show up in a pretty dress and shake David Beckham’s hand).

      • bluhare says:

But my point is that doesn’t count as charity work.

      • perplexed says:

Sorry, I mean, Pippa is doing something…besides going to hair appointments. It might be small, ordinary , or common compared to what others are doing, but impressive next to Kate…which, uh, is kind of sad.

        Edited to have noticed:

It does say in the blog post above that she’s an “ambassador” for the British Heart Foundation, so maybe that’s why she’s considered to be doing charity work. I don’t know if that title is similar to a royal being a patron of a charity, or any number of celebrities doing ambassadorial roles for the UN, either in large or small capacities. But the cycling and raising funds might be one aspect of the ambassadorial role she’s participating in along with other stuff (I don’t know what that is). But she appears to have a title, and whenever someone is given a title like that, people seem to call it charity work.

I’m not arguing the point of Pippa actually being a great contributor to charities or anything, however — just making an observation that a lot of celebrities seem to be doing what she’s doing for an organization and they get to claim it’s part of their charity portfolio. With the bike stuff, she seems to be willing to get down with the peasants and participate, and maybe that’s one aspect of a larger managerial role she has been given that she likes to perform anyway if she’s an “ambassador”?

      • bluhare says:

Got it. Thank you. Although I did say I’m a bit curmudgeonly today, I just proved it without a doubt!

However, if everyone else raised pledges too I don’t see how she did anything different than everyone else did. She just has more contacts. Granted, that counts when it’s money raising, but I just don’t see it as altruistic work.

    • MinnFinn says:

bluhare – +1 Undoubtedly the BHF pays for all of Pippa’s expenses (plus maybe more) related to participating in these events. And I cringe at this duo’s presumed desperation to get publicity whilst always wearing those silly signet rings.

And I do shade the BHF for spending more than 1/2 of their income on fundraising. In 2014 they took in 275 mil, spent 168m on fundraising and 106m went to heart research and their stated mission.

The Komen Foundation and Multiple Sclerosis Society in the U.S. also have bloated advertising/fundraising/overhead costs so much so that I refuse to donate to them.
      https://www.bhf.org.uk/~/media/files/publications/about-the-bhf/bhf_annualreportaccount2014.pdf

      • FLORC says:

        MinnFinn
Charities should be researched HEAVILY before donations, unless you’re fine funding expense accounts over actullay helping the cause said to you. I remember Heart foundation and UNICEF are huge offenders of this. About 50cents on the dollar goes to anything covering overhead and the mission. Rest are perk funding.

And SGK… It’s insane that they spend more attacking other charities than on their own cancer research. And calling it research is another way of saying they’re doing what they think leads to research. Which could be a lot of things. I could rant more, but.. another time.

  22. Citresse says:

I wish James would shave that beard because it really ages him. Other than that, a nice photo of brother and sister even though it looks like Pippa with an uncle.

    • I came here to say the exact same thing. James, hipster beards are over. SO no shade for the racing and fund raising, but tons of shade for the beard.

    • anne_000 says:

I think he’s trying to make himself look like one of the early 1900s BRF men. I think he does it to get people to think he’s part of the BRF. This family is so obsessed with status and image.

      • *North*Star* says:

        Anne

Totally agree. He’s courting the George/Nicholas image, I’m sure someone has pointed it out too. (And that’s why I think he’s courting it too — if he wasn’t he’d at least trim it).

  23. Suze says:

The Middleton family is the Clan of Long Torsos. However, they are all athletic and that’s to the good.

  24. Citresse says:

And it’s wonderful they’re putting their time into such a charity or any charity for that matter.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could see Lord Spencer or one of his children with them?

    • perplexed says:

With Pippa and James? Why? I don’t really get why the Spencers would mix their charitable activities in with the Middletons. It’s not like Kate and William do themselves….

      • Citresse says:

I think it would show unity but then if Kate and William have little to do with the Spencers then it wouldn’t make much sense I guess.

  25. JRenee says:

    Nice legs!
