Jaden Smith appears in GQ’s most stylish men issue (along with Ryan Gosling and John Mayer). Jaden’s only 16 years old, but he caught GQ’s eye with his skirt wearing and flower dancing antics this year. The kid has style, although many people don’t think he has good style. I think he owns everything he wears, and it’s cool how GQ isn’t so stuffy with their best dressed requirements. The magazine describes Jaden’s style as “a form of wearable self-expression,” which makes sense since teenagers are all about expressing themselves. Jaden just stands out from the crowd with his fashion choices.
Jaden covers several subjects for this interview. The dominating question asked why he dressed as albino Batman at prom and wore a similar outfit to the Kimye wedding. Jaden’s answers are so Jaden Smith it hurts:
Style as expression: “I’m just expressing how I feel inside, which is really no particular way because everyday it changes how I feel about the world and myself, but I like wearing super drapey things so I can feel as though I’m a super hero, but don’t have to necessarily wear super hero costumes everyday.
Why he stopped wearing animal prints: “I think they’re cool and I used to wear them a lot more when I was a little younger. At 13 I used to call myself the king of animal print, because I would wear them almost everyday, but then I became more conscious and realized I didn’t want to be known as someone who wears animal skins only, so I switched to black.”
On “swerving too hard”: “Well you can get fined for swerving too hard so it’s tough. People may come up to you and say, ”Can you not swerve so hard? I can’t concentrate over here.’ Thats a way to know you’ve swerved too hard, but there are so many others.
Why he does Batman at special events: “I wore the Batman suit to heighten my experience at the wedding and prom which was fun, but also at the wedding I felt as though I needed to protect everyone there and needed to have the proper gear to do so.”
How he dresses for casual days: “First I roll over on the bed I built for myself and look at the ground. If there are clothes I wore from the previous day and they’re not too dirty, that’s what I put on.”

Jaden also talks about how he doesn’t take style tips from his dad. Can you blame him? Parents are so uncool in general, but Jaden points out how Will used to wear crop tops on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. So we won’t see Jaden swerving in itty bitty tops. He prefers flowing material that makes him feel like a superhero. I don’t think he truly sees himself as a protector of crowds. That’s just one of those spacey statements that comes out of Jaden’s mouth on a regular basis. I wish he’d come back to Twitter.

Is this kid a Scientologist yet?
If not, he will be soon. Mark my words.
“On swerving too hard….” “13 yr old king of animal print”……
**Falls off the chair laughing**.
Every time he has an interview it’s like watching those old “kids say the darnedest things” videos. Someone must be in charge of patting him on the head and giving him a Popsicle at the Smith house.
I think this kid is a little unhinged …
That’s what no school, no adult supervision and hanging out with Kardashians does to a kid.
I think he’s trolling all of us. I kinda love him.
Ah, to be young, rich, uneducated and overindulged.
Y’know what? I think I like this kid. Do your thaaang, Jaden.
Me too! Wearing a batman costume to “protect” people? Perfection! And rolling over to see what clothes are on the floor and aren’t “too dirty”…..lol. And what is with the bed he “built for himself”?
I could listen to him talk all day. What a funny, sweet kid. His parents may be Scientology nuts, but they are doing something right.
Yeah, I like him too. His interviews used to be much more out there, this seem okay.
I remember one year my mom took me school shopping
It was me, my brother, my mom, oh, my pop, and my little sister all hopped in the car. We headed downtown to the Gallery Mall
MY mom started bugging with the clothes she chose
I didn’t say nothing at first I just turned up my nose
She said, “What’s wrong? This shirt cost $20”
I said, “Mom, this shirt is plaid with a butterfly collar!”
The next half hour was the same old thing
My mother buying me clothes from 1963
And then she lost her mind and did the ultimate
I asked her for Adidas and she bought me Zips!
I said, “Mom, what are you doing, you’re ruining my rep”
She said, “You’re only sixteen, you don’t have a rep yet”
I said, “Mom, let’s put these clothes back, please”
She said “no, you go to school to learn not for a fashion show”
I said, “This isn’t Sha Na Na, come on Mom, I’m not Bowzer
Mom, please put back the bell-bottom Brady Bunch trousers
But if you don’t want to I can live with that but
You gotta put back the double-knit reversible slacks”
She wasn’t moved – everything stayed the same, Inevitably the first day of school came, I thought I could get over, I tried to play sick But my mom said, “No, no way, uh-uh, forget it” There was nothing I could do, I tried to relax I got dressed up in those ancient artifacts, And when I walked into school, it was just as I thought, The kids were cracking up laughing at the clothes Mom bought
And those who weren’t laughing still had a ball
Because they were pointing and whispering, As I walked down the hall
I got home and told my Mom how my day went
She said, “If they were laughing you don’t need the,
“Cause they’re not good friends”
For the next six hours I tried to explain to my Mom
That I was gonna have to go through this about 200 more times
So to you all the kids all across the land
There’s no need to argue
Parents just don’t understand
The world needs more people typing out raps in comment sections.
*applauds wildly*
OK, here’s the situation…my parents went away on a weeks vacation….
I think he’s a 16 year old kid saying ridiculous things and not harming anyone. Seriously we were all a little goofy at that age.
There are things I said in my 20s that I would be hard pressed to defend now, never mind the crap I said as a teenager. It takes a whole lifetime to grow up. Shame that kids now will have to defend everything they ever said or did when their brains weren’t even fully developed.
I agree that it’s fine to be silly and think you know so much at 16, I just feel kind of bad for him that it’s all out there publicly for everyone to comment on, and he doesn’t seem to know how to have a private life. Unlike most of us, he’ll probably be answering questions about his teenage silliness for decades to come.
I think he’s harmless except when he’s spouting off about quitting school and that nonsense.
My 8 year old brother can speak more concisely and intelligently if you asked him the same questions.
I just don’t find this cute.
I know he’s only 16 but it seems like nothing’s going to change in terms of schooling so I guess he’ll be one of those adults who depends on people he hires to manage his money and not screw him…good luck with that Jaden.
I think he is so cool. Really left of center and an artistic force. He may surpise us as he grows older. At least he stands out from the boring celebrity spawns.
Let’s all hope that he does surprise us in his adulthood. Come on, Jaden! Kids rise above their circumstances all the time. You can too!
Well what can you say? The dude is young and crazy and having a good time! He has years and years to be a adult.
What. An. Asshat.
My continuing reaction to Jaden Smith: OK big guy, OK. Here’s a cookie, you run along now. * Pat on the head*
Say something nice: at least he’s not scowling all the time anymore.
He is SUCH an idiot. JMO.
Happening.
I dont’ hate on him. He’s still a kid. I don’t even think he’s stupid – just misguided and ill-informed and I blame his parent and COS for that – not him. That said, I am amazed at the support this kid gets for being an artist, fashion foreward, expressing himself, Jaden being Jaden, blah blah blah. Why can’t we just call it for what it is? He is an attention seeker to the max! Look at me! Look at me! That is all it is. He cannot attend any event these days w/out drawing attention to himself which is rude, selfish, and extremely immature for his age but again, I blame the parents. Any decent parent would discourage their teenager from stealing the limelight from his dates whose actual proms they were, Kimye’s wedding and Lord knows I can’t stand what is Kimye, but it was their wedding – not his, and everything else that he attends that he is not the honorarium. But no, now it’s deemed individualism and being an artiste – ridiculous. In another 10 years when he is an adult and being an all-out narcissistic asshat, nobody will be able to say they didn’t see it coming. But I suppose that will be deemed as Jaden being Jaden too.
This!
I’m not going to shade this kid but I truly hope his parents have set up some sort of trust for him. He is exactly the type of celebrity that will end up getting swindled. He’s 16, not 6, so this really isn’t cute to me. I can see vultures overhead ready to take complete advantage of this young man and drain him dry.
I feel like he’s created an off the wall character for himself and this is all some kind of performance art he’s trolling us with. It’s all rather entertaining and amusing if you ask me. He isn’t hurting anyone so why does everyone wanna come down so hard on him?
