Tom Hiddleston: Loki is ‘larger-than-life, deep, complex & relentlessly good fun’

JTM-057356

Last week, Empire Magazine released their new list for the 100 Greatest Movie Characters of all time. Empire being a British publication, the list did skew towards British characters or characters traditionally played by British actors. Still, I was surprised to see some American or American-adjacent characters so high up on the list – the “greatest” character of all time is apparently Indiana Jones, then James Bond, then Han Solo, Batman, Ellen Ripley, The Joker, John McClane, Tyler Durden, Darth Vader and The Dude (from The Big Lebowski). #19 on the list? Loki, as played by Tom Hiddleston. Is Loki truly one of the top-twenty movie characters of all time though? Really? In any case, it seems like Tom Hiddleston gave a brief interview to Empire for this honor:

Tom Hiddleston has a lot to thank Thor for. In Empire magazine’s 100 Greatest Movie Characters, Loki comes in at number 19.

“Within the film industry, the success of the Marvel films has given me incredible opportunities to do other work that I’m very proud of,” Tom smiled to the publication. “Besides that, I’m just grateful to have been given the chance to play a remarkable character: larger-than-life, deep, complex and relentlessly good fun. He’s the god of mischief – in a cinematic universe of superheroes, there’s no-one else I’d rather be.”

Tom first became aware of the character as a youngster, while playing card game Top Trumps. To really nail Loki, the actor set about finding what really made him tick.

“I had to find his smile, his innate love of anarchy and chaos. I had to make his pain real. Great villains are born from tragic circumstances. They become dangerous when their vulnerability hardens into vengeance,” he explained.

“The cornerstone of his psychology for me was the scene between Loki and Odin in the vault in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, when Loki discovers his true lineage for the first time. It was one of the very first scenes to be shot, and what happened in that scene became an anchor of the whole character. I understood all his motivations after that.”

[From TV3]

So Tom is proud of Loki mainly because Marvel made him famous enough to do other non-Marvel projects. I’ve got to wonder, as Loki is scheduled to appear in several upcoming Marvel films, whether Loki has become a little bit of an albatross for Hiddles. Yes, it’s his most famous and celebrated role and Tom loves being a singing and dancing bear. But I would imagine that Tom is now at the point where he’s having to say “no” to quality projects because he has to keep his schedule open for Marvel.

Also: Tom is still filming The Night Manager and this Instagram was posted a few days ago. Tommy is looking so fit and tan! Bless his v-neck.

Hugging it out on the set. With the best producer @robbullock1969 and the best Jonathan pine!!!

Loki is hands down the best Marvel movie character of all time. Top 20 from ANY movie EVER – nah.

  2. Lilacflowers says:

The drought is finally coming to a brief end before he disappears into the jungles of Hawaii or Vietnam or wherever they’re filming Skull Island.

He’s already had to turn down roles because of Loki. According to the director of Snowpiercer, he turned down the Curtis role because TDW started filming the same week. And Close Enough was probably shut down because of TDW re-shoots.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

I think something else shot down Close Enough, otherwise the director would have cast someone else (as he already did). That film was treasured project.

      • NUTBALLS says:

I’m still holding out a glimmer of hope that the Capa film will happen eventually.

      • M.A.F. says:

I think finance was another issue as well because Haley Atwell also left the project at the same time.

    • Beth No. 2 says:

OMG I loooooooved Snowpiercer. It’ll be interesting picturing Hiddles in the role of Curtis, though I think Chris Evans did a surprisingly good job.

Also, does Tom ever wear his fringe down? His hairline is receding a bit and it could also help cover that tanline he has around the edge of his hair (I have the same problem after being out in the sun too long).

  3. Sixer says:

Ha @ Top Trumps. Yeah, right, Tommy. I bet he sneaked that from Looking, where Russell Tovey introduced Jonathan Groff to it. My brother and I had just about every Top Trumps pack going, and I’ll eat one of Sixlet Minor’s smelly socks if there was a Norse mythology pack before Marvel.

FINALLY! A Tommy thread I can be mean on!

    • Lilacflowers says:

You’ve been holding it in for so very long.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Apparently, there was one in 1988 http://toptrumps.wikia.com/wiki/Marvel_Super_Villains but, as Tommy hasn’t proved he actually had it, you can hold off on the sock eating for now.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

He is looking fit and tanned.

Personally I am tired of Loki and all the camp. He needs to just move on and show he can do well in other roles.

    • Sixer says:

Lilac: I have been holding it in! And I definitely require evidence else I shall welsh on the sock eating. It would be a fate worse than death.

Miss J: I concur. Although he and his PR have a cosy relationship with Empire, don’t they? It’s just another PR-driven list like all the others, so y’know. Unless he gets his legs out sharpish, I’m not letting him off!

      • Lilacflowers says:

Guillermo de Toro is bringing Crimson Peak cast to SDCC so maybe he’ll show up wearing shorts and you can get your fill of long legs.

      • NUTBALLS says:

I don’t expect him in shorts (when is he ever in shorts?), but I think he’ll be wearing one of his shirts of sex, unbuttoned down to his chest hairs with form-fitting slacks, and possibly going commando. I will get my drool bucket ready, as I suspect I’ll be needing it.

Perhaps if the slacks are tight enough, the Great Gob Almighty will be satisfied?

      • Beth No. 2 says:

@NUTBALLS – “When is he ever in shorts?”

I’m not sure if lycra shorts are short enough for you, but here ya go (with bonus booty shot): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ULAj19fbSpE

      • NUTBALLS says:

Beth I meant for a publicity event or when papped out and about, but I thank you kindly for posting that clip. I love Ruth Wilson and she owned Tom’s ass in Suburban Shootout. I’ll never forget the leg massage scene for as long as I live!

      • Lilacflowers says:

        Shorts in ice bucket challenge

      • Dara says:

@Lilac – he was wearing more than a white t-shirt for the IBC? I was so transfixed by that glorious garment (and what it was covering) that I really can’t recall anything else when I summon up the mental image of that historic moment…

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Dara, that glorious white garment belongs in a museum. After I’m done with it.

    • TotallyBiased says:

@Sixer — actually, he’s been referencing that Top Trumps card since shilling for the first Thor movie. In an interview somewhere he even demonstrates a good memory for Loki’s stats (his weight, for example, likely to break through a floor.) So this might really have been a thing for him at age seven!

      • Sixer says:

You’re just saying that so I have to eat socks. Bah!

      • Lilacflowers says:

But you get to choose the socks.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Ooooo–THAT I have to see. Pictures or it didn’t happen!

Actually, what I remember about those early interviews is how defensive he got when asked how much he was into the Marvel comics characters (especially Loki) as a kid. IMO, he trotted out playing the Top Trumps game as a defense–most of our US journos grew up with Marvel/DC comics and wouldn’t have really understood an utter ‘I didn’t read comics much then’ answer.

  4. Amelia says:

    Unf.
Tommy in a v-neck *slobbers inelegantly*

  5. Lilacflowers says:

ISTL will be released November 27. Still no release date for High-Rise, or US distribution agreement either.

    • Dara says:

I really thought there would be announcements from Cannes about distribution for High Rise. I’m starting to wonder about the lack of news, and not in a good way. There are only a few deals in place that I know of and all of them happened before the film was finished and anyone saw footage. If I’m wrong about that last part, someone please let me know. High Rise isn’t really my thing – sounds too bleak by half – but I’d hate to have it sink into oblivion.

      • NUTBALLS says:

It’s not on my must-see list (especially after listening to the audiobook) but I wondered if the lack of news is a bad sign for this film as well.

      • Lilacflowers says:

They hadn’t finished editing and scoring in time for Cannes.

      • NUTBALLS says:

I hadn’t expected post-production to take almost a year to complete. Then again, it may have run out of money as can happen with indie productions. Not sure if that’s what happened here, but seems an awfully long time to finish and considering that they still don’t have a US distribution deal, can’t help but wonder why no one has picked it up yet.

      • Dara says:

@lilac – I agree the film probably wasn’t ready to be shown in competition, but Hanway was definitely marketing it at Cannes, on the business side of the festival. And there was enough footage ready that they’ve been showing a trailer of sorts at a few industry gatherings. I’m just surprised given the cast, the source material and the director that more hasn’t been announced that’s all.

      • Beth No. 2 says:

I saw a poster for High Rise, with Hiddles standing against a mirror or something.

And November 27 for ISTL is a fairly good date. Shows that the distributor SPC has some confidence in its awards traction.

      • Allegra says:

        From Sienna Guillory:
“Post production nearly done…then hopefully festivals! I think my favourite film ever to shoot”

      • M.A.F. says:

Cannes is just the first of the festivals and it certainly no longer gives any indication of how well a movie will do if it’s not there or if it is there. There is still the Telluride Film Festival in August and TIFF in September and those two are just as big if not bigger than Cannes.

      • Beth No. 2 says:

Regarding High Rise – Telluride and TIFF are both good festivals, albeit not as prestigious as Cannes. I’m also wondering if the movie seems like a small scale British drama? (i.e. not positioned for major awards traction; pl correct me if I’m wrong). Another possibility is the London Film Festival.

As for ISTL, it has more awards potential and SPC has given it a good release date. It could premiere at Telluride or TIFF (which many Oscar contenders do nowadays), or at NYFF or AFI. A premiere and theatrical release towards year-end during awards season indicates the distributor likely thinks well of ISTL’s chances. I did some quick googling and interestingly SPC doesn’t seem to have a major awards player on its plate yet, so ISTL could end up as one of its horses (though it’s still too early to tell, and the director seems a bit lightweight).

    • icerose says:

He has tooted for a possible nomination in at least 4 lists I have seen so am keeping my fingers crossed it happens

  6. Lennox says:

I watched The Avengers for the first time recently, and I could not understand the hype at all. None of the characters were likeable and it was just one bang-smash action scene after the other. After all the raving about it I was expecting something that would appeal to adults as well as kids, but no. As for Loki, I thought he was pretty hammy, and the horn costume just made me laugh. Sorry – rant over.

    • P'enny says:

its a comic book movie for families, not an Oscar baiting biopic

      • Lilacflowers says:

What? Thor can’t really fly and create lightning? Bruce Banner can’t turn into a giant green rage monster? But the Chitauri are real, aren’t they? And Phil Coulson really got stabbed in the back by Loki but was brought back to life in T.A.H.I.T.I., it’s a magical place, right?

      • Lennox says:

Er, yes… I know? I was expecting something that was actually entertaining. Shrek, for example, is not exactly highbrow, “Oscar-baiting” but it’s still fun and enjoyable and yes, for families, which suggests that there is something for everyone. Avengers was not any of these things.

    • icerose says:

I only watch Loki Marvel a I find him far more entertaining that the heroes -He is funny and manages to extend the character’s dimensions with each appearance unlike some RDJ to name a one who just turn in predictable oerformances

  7. jinni says:

I am not seeing fit, healthy, and tan. I am seeing worn out, old, balding and leathery. He’s aged so much in these last few years. Is he and Fassbender in a race to see who can look the oldest at a youngish age? Can’t do much about the hair, but stay out of the sun guys.

    • notyou says:

      Piss Off!!
Take your trolling elsewhere, it is truly not needed.

      • jinni says:

I’m not trolling he really looks a mess to me and I would have never guessed the cute guy with the blonde curls from Cranford part 2 would have aged so quickly and badly. Also, if you have a problem with my comment then just report me and let the people who actually run this site ( which you aren’t one of them) handle it.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Jinni was not the one trolling. And he does look tired in that picture. Hopefully, he can get in some rest and relaxation and Wimbledon appearances before he’s off to Skull Island

      • Miss Jupitero says:

I don;t see any trolling. And though I think he generally looks wonderful, I really wish he would learn about using sun protection. The tan is *not* healthy.

      • M.A.F. says:

I’ve seen jinni’s name around these parts, can’t say the same for you.

And I too see what jinni sees. I think he looks his best when his hair is a little longer and he has more weight in his face. And he needs to start moisturizing and wear sunblock 24/7.

      • Lilacflowers says:

May I just say something about sun protection? I have a very fair complexion of English/Irish lineage with a personal history of cancer and a family history of melanoma and other skin cancers. I slather myself with sunblock (block, not screen) and daily apply moisturizer and makeup that contains additional sunscreen. I wear hats if I’m going to be outside for more than 15 minutes. I have that same line around my hairline. My hands, feet, neck, and face currently have a slight tan despite my efforts. If I spent the last month in Morocco and Mallorca, I would be bright red, unless I wrapped myself in a blanket and veil. Some of us show the effects of sun even when we take every precaution

      • M.A.F. says:

True Liliacflowers but on him, if you compare the photos from around the first Thor premier to now, you can see some of the damage. And that could just be because he is older but his face always seem so dry to me. Maybe he just hasn’t meet the right face cream.

      • NUTBALLS says:

If he’s lucky enough to get away for a holiday — depending on what or WHO he does, he could come back looking about five years younger.

      • icerose says:

Everyone disagrees re his aging -it comes up down to personnel opinion-yes his hair is probably receding and I guess this bothers some people but you just thing Mark Strong and wave it off-It is his character .acting and ,natural charm and fun that makes him attractive to me, Seeing those two walk out at the Baftas was like watching charismic sex on elongated legs

      • NUTBALLS says:

icerose, you’ll appreciate this… I was supposed to see Mark Strong in View from the Bridge this past weekend and came home from camping early just to catch it at a nearby university, only to have them reschedule it for Labor Day weekend. Talk about bummed — I wanted to hear that sexy voice again!

      • icerose says:

1 have the same history with the added factor of having to use sun and light drugs sensitive skon-drives me crazy the sunscreen in the world cannot precept my skin

      • icerose says:

@NUTBALLS-I just booked my tickets for the live broadcast today-i am taking my daughters boyfriend which should be interesting

      • NUTBALLS says:

Oh, I thought you’d already seen it. Can’t believe I have to wait another two months. I’ve been looking forward to it since February.

I did get to see The Audience and while I knew I’d enjoy Dame Helen (and did!), I adored Richard McCabe as PM Wilson. He was my favorite.

And while I’m on the subject of British actors I’m just now getting familiar with, I want to see more of Sarah Lancashire’s work. I loved her in Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax. Thank God Netflix is adding a lot of British TV shows to the roster now…

    • NUTBALLS says:

There’s room for everyone and their opinions here. I only speak out when the commenters are being shamed or condescended to for the things they like to chat about here.

Return to Cranford was filmed 6 years ago, so he does look noticeably younger then, especially with the adorable blonde curls. I do see what you’re saying jinni and I think all the stress of work and travel over the past couple of years has taken a toll on him, not to mention the dramatic weight loss (which he could barely afford) to play Hank W. Also, his hairline looks worse when he’s pushing his hair straight up. He’s at the end of a three month shoot and in two very hot, sunny places so I see why he may look tan/leathery, tired/old etc. I personally don’t mind that he’s wearing his experiences more these days — but I don’t mind wrinkles and high foreheads either.

I think if we see him at SDCC, he’ll be looking much better.

      • jinni says:

Thank you for understanding that I wasn’t trying to troll. Hopefully he gains back his weight and stops messing with his hair.

      • Dara says:

@Nutty, you beat me to it. There’s room for everyone Jinni.

He does look tired in that photo, despite the smile. I was actually thinking his skin looks less damaged than than it did a few years ago, so I’m not seeing leathery. Definitely older looking than during Cranford, but as Nutballs pointed out, that was a while ago.

Proper lighting, hair and makeup do wonders for an actor when they’re working. I’d seen candid photos of Fassbender and couldn’t work out why all the fuss. Then I saw a few of his films, then a few fashion photoshoots and that all changed. Hubba hubba.

p.s. I love Tom’s eye crinkles, if he ever succumbs to the Hollywood pressure to smooth and de-wrinkle I will never forgive him.

      • koko says:

I love the lines on his face, I have them too. I think when you smile a lot, and well he does that, those lines are formed. I think he looks a bit tired but healthy. Still a sexy Englishman. 🙂

      • P'enny says:

what i’m seeing is a guy whose just stepped out of a shower and let that fluff dry, after a hard sailing day, last sunday, when it was reportedly taken. under iPhone lighting. i look 50 on instragram.

However, Jinni, Have you seen the latest TNM photos, where his hair is styled, grey suit and his face isn’t flushed?? he looks mega sexy and “his age”.

But, like a lot of people, i am getting a bit fed up with the thin, tired, losing hair comments. Blokes lose hair, Mark Strong mega gorgeous. Girls, gain weight and wrinkles. It;s comments like this that drive people to plastic surgery, because all they care about is looks, and not their acting talents.

      • icerose says:

i think his hair was permed in those earlier period pieces possibly with extensions-perhaps the most honest look was the earlier Unrelated indie films

      • icerose says:

@Kara -all those wrinkles give him character -happy people often have laughter wrinkles

    • Ava says:

I think he looks happy and cute. It’s just a quick snapshot. 🙂

  8. Elisa the I. says:

Yay for Ellen Ripley making the list.
Any other female characters in there? No snark intended… 🙂

  9. serena says:

I love him and I love Loki. Among all the other super heroes, he truly stands out, at least for me. While I’m kind of becoming sick of all the movies heroes (really, it’s enough), I won’t ever get bored with Loki.

  10. seesittellsit says:

    Morning, darling. . . . sigh.

Much as I love you, though, sweetheart, truth compels me to point out that you initially went out to try for Thor, so Loki may have ended up being no one in the superhero canon you would rather play, but that’s not where you started. . .

Let us say that there is no one we’d rather have seen play Loki, because you totes made him your own and wickedly delicious, and the scripts for this stuff are so boring that if it weren’t for your Loki, I’d never have managed more than 45 minutes of one . . . Hemsworth’s beefcake notwithstanding.

    See you later . . .

  11. InvaderTak says:

Good ol’ Hiddles. Sell sell sell. At least he’s real about what marvel opened up for him. Hopefully this year will finally put him in a real place in the industry. Hes hyperbolic, but realistic in an overly eloquent way.

V neck is doing for me. Usually hate guys in them but the chest hair might be helping….

  12. Naddie says:

I was about to tell him to move on, but I keep forgetting that Thor is not over yet.

  13. Ava says:

Can’t wait for Crimson Peak, ISTL, and the night manager! I also love King Kong. Tom loves acting and Mavel gave him that chance. He has made excellent choices and I think will have a long career. The pictures of him as a blond Pine are drool worthy….. He is looking good.

  14. Irene says:

Um. Really? I mean, Loki’s fun, but the 19th greatest movie character of ALL time? REALLY?

…..Oh I just read the source. This is an online poll, so basically Hiddleston’s horde of over-invested fans went and flooded it. That makes a lot more sense.

    • P'enny says:

if that was the case he would be number 1

And, i didn’t notice Empire advertise this poll, tbh, and i follow them on Twitter.

And Whose Tyler Durden?? [God, i’m thick] oops… Google is my friend.

    • jammypants says:

I didn’t even know about this poll, otherwise, I would have voted for the golden retriever. Woof!

    • Lilacflowers says:

How did David Tennant’s portrayal of Bartemus Crouch Jr in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire not make the top five?

      • TotallyBiased says:

That ALONE tells you this wasn’t advertised on Twitter, much less anywhere Tumblr could have gotten ahold of it!

      • Lilacflowers says:

Right? The Tennant fans take over everything. One of my co-workers has confessed to spending hours voting on things for him. After her kids and husband are asleep.

  15. Moxie Remon says:

I think i digged way to deep on his life and now, although i still love him with all my heart, i kinda hate him a little too. I think that this whole Loki things is worn out; actually, i think all Marvel actors are showing their faces and i saw his and i’m a little fed up with all of this. Sorry for the confusion, but i had to express it.

    • InvaderTak says:

      Huh?

      • neverland says:

InvaderTak, looks like someone’s been reading up on gossip blogs. Which is entirely their choice, but it’s a damn shame if they’ve gotten a ~new opinion~ of him based on an awful lot of porkie-pies. Its the whole “I read that he does XYZ and now I realise it was ALL a lie!” Kind of thing, I guess.

Apologies if that’s not the case, however. We’re all allowed to move on. I’m just a big detractor of… certain blogs because I know exactly where their rubbish came from.

      • InvaderTak says:

Oh. thanks neverland I forget about that one. i thought something had happened like he went the way of chris evans and renner. I went on sogo yesterday and read that people were getting doxxed over BC so I’m totally done with all the tumblr /Reddit crap. It’s all crap anyway; they’ve been debunked numerous times. Let the haters do their thing. Happens to everyone. Apparently even Emma Watson.

      • neverland says:

Yep. A lot of actors and other famous faces end up with really nasty gossip being spread about them. It happened on live journal, now it’s on tumblr. I’m sure I may be called a nanny for callng it out, but i don’t think its acceptable for someone to be misrepresented in such horrible ways for the sake of havng a giggle and a gossip. The Sophie Hunter stuff is really disgusting, I understand disliking her for whatever reason, but some of these “reasons” are so absurd and based on “well I decided it’s true wth little to no evidence, so it must be true!”.

As lilac flowers said. He keeps things quiet so the only major gossip I can imagine moxie having read to end up “kind of hating” him is from that blog or a repost of it elsewhere. Maybe I’m overreacting, but I’ve been around a few years and saw this whole thing unfold from the moment one of the “sources” posted on here, to the moment it blew up last year. And it’s ridiculous.

But, as you said, happens to a lot of people. I just feel bad because I know I’d hate to be accused of things I haven’t done, and have no real way of denying it (because how can famius people address dirty gossip in small corners of the Internet? They can’t).

      • neverland says:

And yes, know the drill – if you don’t lke gossip stay off gossip sites. Just in my opinion blogs like that aren’t gossip sites because they’re not speculating based on what we see, they’re promoting their own “insider info” in order to damage someone’s reputation. To me there’s a difference between the two, but I understand some enjoy that kind of thing. I mean, I dont understand, but… You know!

With that said, I’ll leave you guys to make up your own minds about it all, as is your right 🙂

      • jammypants says:

haha! @Invader I had the same reaction

    • Lilacflowers says:

Dug deep where? There’s not that much out there on his life. He keeps things very quiet.

    • NUTBALLS says:

Moxie, echoing what others have said, it is hard to dig deep when Tom holds things as close to the chest as he does. I’ve been under the distinct impression that he’s quite guarded, despite his outgoing, charming personality. From what he’s said, not even his schoolmates knew him that well. Without firsthand experience with him or an overwhelming amount of “evidence” of his douche-baggery (a la Sean Penn), why believe what people are saying online — things that can’t be verified?

      • Lilacflowers says:

You mean the ex-FWB who wants to reconnect and the friend of a friend from the gym weren’t telling the truth when they contacted that random blogger in East Smalltown, SouthMountainState? He doesn’t have a Doctor Who poster in the bedroom?

        Is that blog still functioning?

      • NUTBALLS says:

Can’t say I actually saw that blog. They sound like they know him FOR REALS.

      • Lilacflowers says:

They sent their oh so credible stories to that blogger on that Tumblr site and then they disappeared. Yes, I’m sure they truly were FOR REALS because she verified them or something by like calling him or something. And they just so happened to contact her at the very same time, which isn’t unusual or weird or anything at all. I’m trying so very hard to suspend logic. And calendar time. And disbelief. Am I doing a good job?

      • icerose says:

In my experience very charming me always hold something back-it is there way of controlling the influx of attention

    • Lilacflowers says:

I’m partial to actual, verifiable facts over unidentifiable, unidentified “sources” who share their most intimate secrets with some blogger on Tumblr and then disappear without ever resurfacing

      • jammypants says:

        Agreed.

      • Absolutely says:

        Stop making sense Lilac!

      • Lilacflowers says:

        I just can’t help it!

      • NUTBALLS says:

But…but…but, an attention-starved person with a wicked AGENDA can’t get people to listen to them if they only stick to the actual, verifiable facts. That’s just so BORING.

      • M.A.F. says:

See Liliacflowers, this is why you are a nanny, you apply logic and that has no business here. 😉

      • Lilacflowers says:

I can’t help but be logical; my office manager’s father grew up with Leonard Nimoy.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

I concur, and one thing that is clear about Tom is that her is very, very private about any real details on his private life, and has an understandable desire to stay off the radar. Pffft, if I were him, I would do the same. In interviews, he has perfected the art of saying a lot of stuff without actually revealing anything about himself. Those My Space posts were the closest fans came to peeking behind the curtain for real, and I doubt we are ever going to see anything like that again from Mr Careful.

I personally suspect he is way more boring than his fans would like. If there were any “tea” on him past or present which had any reality, I think it would be out there in some reliable form.

So what do we have? Crazy bored fans making up weird stories and obsessing about his clothes iron because, let’s face it, there is NOTHING out there.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Miss Jupiter, obsessing about his clothes iron? Oh thank God that I’ve missed whatever that was about! As for the MySpace stuff, my octogenarian great aunt has wilder stories about what can be seen in Amsterdam’s red light district and the fangirls fussing over them pretty much indicated to me that they aren’t as worldly as they pretend to be and are clueless about one of Amsterdam’s biggest tourist attractions.

The guy has said he likes to sit on the roof with soup and watch the night come in and he likes to read a lot. And he gives every indication of being someone who reads a lot. That speaks to being quiet, grounded, and rather boring. That doesn’t mean a person doesn’t occasionally party wildly, but he isn’t popping up on the party circuit with any regularity.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Pfft. He’s never boring with me.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

I should have put “boring” in quotes. He is never boring to me, and I like his mind. But for fangirls who want gossip and drama, he would be “boring.”

      • NUTBALLS says:

I didn’t think that, Miss Jup. I should have added when before with to ensure the true meaning was understood. 😉

  16. jammypants says:

    Yum. That’s all I got.

  17. kri says:

Between Crimson Peak, X Files, etc I am just waiting for summer to be over. I am dying to see CP!!

  18. TotallyBiased says:

I managed to post some lovely links (as did several other commenters) in the previous SDCC Hiddles thread, and they are amazingly still there. Lots of chatter about SPC’s announcement of a release date for SPC, plus the gorgeous La Cumbre Escarlata image of him and Jess.

  19. Abby_J says:

Just sayin. If you see a report of a woman rushing the stage at SDCC if he shows up there for Crimson Peak, that might be me. *sigh*

“Really officer…..I just wanted to tell him how tired he looked, and that I thought he needed a break. Yes, I did need to grab him in order to do it.”

Okay, kidding. Waaay too stalkery. 🙂

    • NUTBALLS says:

Abby, you are our eyes and ears at SDCC. I’ll give you a pass… 🙂

I, for one, will be expecting a full report as I did from icerose when her daughter attended Nuffield. It’s your duty as a Dragonfly!

    • Lilacflowers says:

Will you be taking JLM with you?

      • Abby_J says:

I could. He would probably enjoy the trip, if he can get away from filming Elemantary’s next season. He will need a Doctor Who costume for the day we are dressing up. 4th, 5th, 7th 9th and 11th Doctor are taken. Maybe I can dress him up as David Tennant’s Doctor then I will have two reasons to fan girl. 😉

I should probably take Tommy running while we are there too. San Diego has beaches!

      • Lilacflowers says:

Although given the amount of sun damage he has been sustaining in Morocco and Mallorca, he might need to stay clear of the beach. I’m sure you can figure out some physical indoor activities.

      • Abby_J says:

Very true, Lilacflowers. Very true. I’m sure I can be creative.

Of course, applying sunscreen could be fun too.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        Sunblock.

      • icerose says:

i just avoid the midday sun and go walking when the suns heat and effects have diminish in the evening around 6/7-it works for me but I still smother my self in sunbloCK

  20. Ava says:

    @neverland +1000
I like gossip. I’m on a gossip site, but it can be a”fun” escape. No one said gossip has to be mean….i just enjoy the TH beauty and acting skill. As lilac flowers said. He is not trying to promote his private life. He’s trying to entertain people with his acting. I have rarely ever heard him discuss anything personal. I like that, like Daniel day Lewis.

    • neverland says:

I totally get that this is a gossip, site which is why I was a bit umm-aah over posting that – plus I’ve not been around since last year, eek! – but hey, I believe what I believe, and for me gossip isn’t fun, like you said, if it’s mean. Or it isn’t fun if it has ulterior motives. Pretending to know someone in order to spread stories is in a completely different world to a group of fans/spectators making guesses. Sometimes the latter goes too far for me personally (diagnosing people based on perceived character traits for example but ymmv) but the former is always really disgusting.

      Right. I’ll shush now.

      • Ava says:

        Agree.

      • Lilacflowers says:

You’ve pretty much been 100% accurate on all of this.

      • neverland says:

Thanks to both of you! I was worried about being a Debbie-downer, ha – I mostly read and don’t comment now because the funs been sucked out of gossip for me after the whole kerfuffle last year, but I could t stop myself from saying something this time.

Go forth and enjoy gossip, anyway!

      • jammypants says:

        exactly

  21. sad DSA says:

True. People aren’t just born villains, are they? They evolve into villains (unless they’ve sociopathic tendencies).

On another note! Please do hire this man to play a Bond villain (and Victor Trevor—I could write an entire essay as to why he would be right for the role).

    • Dara says:

That sucks. Having them signed on was the only reason (other than Tom) that I was even mildly interested in the Monkey Movie.

I think the movie will still get made, Universal is sinking a ton of money into building the Kong attraction at their theme park.

    • icerose says:

Just saw that -and wondered if it was schedule conflict or a better office-i was always surprised at how quickly that hoped on board post Oscar PR

  22. et alors says:

JK Simmons and Michael Keaton have left Kong: Skull Island due to the scheduling conflicts. Damn it.

    http://deadline.com/2015/07/michael-keaton-j-k-simmons-kong-skull-island-king-kong-jurassic-world-1201466254/

    • TotallyBiased says:

Well, it went from May to October to ‘end-of-the-year’–I can see how eventually that would just be untenable. I hope the timing doesn’t start butting up against Marvel! Also–when exactly is he supposed to promote IStL and play the Oscar Campaign Game if he’s busy filming w/the big monkey?

      • Dara says:

@TeeBee – I think the Marvel schedule will be unaffected. Thor3 probably won’t film until early summer 2016, and Avengers 3&4 are fall 2016 and early 2017 – gosh those dates sounds like a long way off. I wonder what it’s like to know what your schedule will be 2 years in the future.

I think we can safely say the May start date for Kong was never real. I saw March mentioned in late 2014 too, but since TNM was always scheduled to be 15 weeks there’s no way that could have been true. But you’re right, Kong has been pushed back several times. In very short order, it went from August to September and now Deadline says October or ‘before the end of the year’.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Thor3 is set to start filming in June 2016. Feige just announced that the other day. I hope there is time in between the two blockbuster monster/comic book movies for him to do something non-monster/comic book. Something like a nice, small, smart British comedy. Otherwise, we won’t see Tom in the movie theaters in 2016 at all.

Sorry to see Keaton and Simmons go. Was looking forward to seeing them in this. And has anyone else noticed there have been no WOMEN cast or even rumored for Skull Island?

      • Dara says:

@lilac, I saw June somewhere else but glad to see it’s confirmed. Also saw that Ragnarok in the film title turns out to be a Thor clone/cyborg that becomes the evil villain in the story. I’m not excluding the possibility that it’s a rumor meant as a misdirect for the actual plot, but if it turns out to be true didn’t Ultron cover some of that territory already?

I don’t know what to think about Skull Island. I was on the fence about it, and the director, before, was encouraged by Keaton, Simmons and the screenwriter (Gatins) signing on, and am now back to thinking it could be a potential train wreck.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Dara, Legendary is having tremendous success with its monster movies and the rumor is they want to revitalize the Kong franchise and bring about the decades long-awaited match between Kong and Godzilla. Yes, there have been people waiting decades for a match between Kong and Godzilla, my 86 year old great aunt being one of them. I think they will take care with this franchise. They don’t want to repeat some of the earlier Kong films that weren’t stellar.

Thor3 still needs a director but there is time enough to find one. On the commentary track for TDW, Feige points out that during the convergence, the realm of Hel is visible and the films haven’t visited Hel yet but perhaps Loki will find reason to go there in the next round. Some of the rumors for Thor3 refer to characters from Hel. Whatever route they are taking, Thanos will likely play some role because they are setting up Infinity Wars and its the last film in which to do so.

      • NUTBALLS says:

So if Skull Island filming is now delayed until end of 2015 and Thor doesn’t start until June 2016, it appears that Tom didn’t have anything scheduled for Q1-Q2 2016, which gives me the sads ’cause I was hoping he’d have something in the works that would be announced.

At the same time, if he doesn’t have anything else to film after TNM wraps, it frees him up for a whole lotta PROMOTION and OSCAR CAMPAIGNING. Interviews, red carpets, dancing, teasing… yep, maybe it’s not so bad after all.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Nutballs, we don’t know and we may never know. Lately, he has only been announcing a project as he starts the immediately preceding one, probably lessons learned from having two movies fall apart on him in 2012-2013. He could have had something unannounced lined up that he now has to pull out of. When interviewed at BAFTA in February about whether he would do theater in 2015, he said not this year because he was booked solid through the end of the year. At that point, Skull Island was supposed to film this summer. Also, if “late this year” turns out to mean October, he could have something in place for February 2016. I do want to see him in something screening in a movie theater in 2016 and don’t want to have to wait until March 2017 when Skull Island gets its release.

As for PR before Skull Island starts filming, unless High-Rise and ISTL get some festival screenings, there won’t be too many red carpets before October.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Lilac, I was referring to festival/awards season since Legendary won’t be filming this fall. That frees him up for TIFF, LFF, Telluride and all the red carpet premiers coming up…possibly awards season events.

I hope he’s got some side projects he’s cooking up this summer (like he did in Q1) that will give us some newsworthy posts and tide us over until the fall.

      • Dara says:

@Nutty – you’re right, there is a bright side. I would be surprised if ISTL wasn’t at one festival at least, I’m leaning toward TIFF. High Rise might pop up at LFF or Venice too. Add the Crimson Peak promo work into what is shaping up to be an award campaign for ISTL and hopefully he’ll have a busy fall even without the Monkey Movie. Selfishly, I want to see a ton of magazine photoshoots for all the articles that will support the press for CP and ISTL. I need oodles of pretty, pretty pictures in fashion magazines (Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair, etc.) – with or without his sexy costars.

At some point, the boy is due for a vacation. After SDCC I hope he gets a chance to just chill for a few weeks. As much fun as the whole Bora Bora kerfuffle was, this time around part of me wants to never know where he ends up – or with whom.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

This leaves me crestfallen. I know though that this is just how the business works sometimes.

      • et alors says:

Me, too, Miss Jupitero. I was really looking forward to having JK (loved him since his L&O days) and Keaton in this film.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Me too. Like Dara, I wasn’t even interested in this movie until Keaton and Simmons signed on.

  23. et alors says:

Collider tweeted about Tom, Jessica, and Mia being at Comic Con, and it looks like Jessica has confirmed it.

    https://twitter.com/jes_chastain/status/616337370049323009

  24. NUTBALLS says:

In happier news, it’s being reported on Twitter that Tom will be at SDCC next week, along with GdT, Jessica and Mia, for a CP panel in Hall H.

  25. TotallyBiased says:

Sweet! Though I still say Marvel is being vicious and cruel–they’ve scheduled their top talent (plugging the tv shows) opposite Saturday’s Hall H schedule. And it isn’t as if you can run out of hall H for a couple of hours and then go back in!

    • NUTBALLS says:

TB – Loki will reel at least some of them over, I bet.

I’m wondering how many hours Abby is willing to wait in line to get a drool-worthy seat in front of the PuddleTom. 10? 15? How deep is your love Abby?

I think Cumberbatch had ladies camped out for 20 for that Penwings movie. This would surely be a more entertaining panel, amirite?

      • TotallyBiased says:

In 2013, I know people who got in line for Hall H ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON!!!!! Not sure what time exactly, but it was before 5 pm. And there were still people ahead of them.
No-one who tried to line up after the wee hours of Saturday morning ( 5 am or so) even made it in the door during the first fill–although if they stuck it out, they got a seat later in the day as there was a trickle of departures. Since Himself didn’t go on until the late afternoon/early evening, I think it worked out okay for the most dedicated.

      • Lilacflowers says:

And Himself, Lord God King of Hall H was never announced for the 2013 SDCC. Hall H gets insane lines, especially on movie day.

Lego Loki has confirmed his attendance at SDCC this year, so Tom must definitely be scheduled to appear.

  26. TotallyBiased says:

@Lilacflowers–hope you see this. They just slammed the comments closed on the recent post AS I was replying!
My annoyance with Letters Live is that they tweeted specifically advertising video of Tom’s reading would be on their site ‘soon’–then months of radio silence–now this. When they HAVE video of ‘Batch and Lou. Oh, wait–did the Batch want to be the only guy w/video? That makes no sense–they are good friends. So what the heck?
