‘Magic Mike XXL’ only came in #4 at the weekend box office: disappointing?

FFN_Tatum_Dewan_VAH_070315_51789386

Here are some photos of Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan returning to LA last Friday after the brief European tour to support Magic Mike XXL last week. I’m starting to worry about Charming Potato, you guys. Yes, he’s coming off an Oscar-nominated film (Foxcatcher), but he’s also coming off one of the bigger bombs of the last year, Jupiter Ascending. Magic Mike XXL was supposed to be his return to form, his return to box office glory, the return of the Charming Potato who can open at #1 without even trying. It didn’t happen.

Magic Mike XXL opened mid-week. XXL didn’t do the same kind of business as the first film though – the first film opened with a $39.1 million weekend and XXL opened with… $28.7 million for the weekend, $44.1 million in five days. Considering both films were made on the cheap (they were made like indie films), there’s no question that XXL is going to make a profit and people will go home happy. It’s just that people were expecting a bigger opening. Channing was hustling on the legit magazine covers – People Magazine and Vanity Fair – and he still couldn’t break $30 million for the weekend. It looks bad. It looks like there’s a chink in the Charming Potato armor. His movies usually don’t debut at #4 on their opening weekend.

Now, all that being said, I went to see XXL on Saturday and I really enjoyed it. I felt like the first film probably had more dancing overall, but the first film was sort of depressing, like… we should feel guilty about the struggling male strippers. The second film was a lot more enjoyable and fun. I have to say – this is the most I’ve liked Jada Pinkett Smith in a really long time, and she had a surprising amount of chemistry in her scenes with Channing. You know who fell flat? Amber Heard. She was super-annoying. Channing was lovely and funny and I came out of it with an even bigger crush on Matt Bomer. That boy… he’s just perfect. Also, if they want to do a spin-off movie on just Jada’s character’s stripper mansion/private club, I will be ALL FOR IT. I would totally watch that.

Amber Heard is in this? That marriage to Captain Jack ain’t paying off like she hoped.

    • Hawkeye says:

Her looks are holding her back! It’s so unfair! POOR AMBER!

    • Lori says:

I blame it all on her………..she’s the death kiss in every movie she’s in.

      • Ysohawt1 says:

The movie needed Matthew Maconaughey , better writing and more dance scenes. It was ok, but still fun during the dance scenes.
Janda Pinkett was the most central female character, Amber basically only had a few scenes and the final dance scene. She wasn’t really central though.

Andie Macdowell was fun. Love those southern belle scenes. Lol

Had no idea Matt Bomner is soooo hot. I didn’t really know him except for seeing him in this movie.

Sofia’s boyfriend is sexy as hell too.
Also the movie only cost 15$ million to make. This film will do just fine.

  2. lisa2 says:

I know the budget was almost 15 million; but they were expecting this to do BIG numbers this weekend, I read that most of the cast didn’t get paid much because they were going to get their big buck on the back end. The film will probably do fine as this week goes on, but to say they are not disappointed is an understatement.

Channing has competition and his name is Chris Pratt at this moment.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

You are right. The real bomb is Terminator Genesis

      • Mom2two says:

This. Terminator cost way more than MM and for both movies to come in behind Jurassic World and Inside Out is not good, especially for Terminator.

      • Adrien says:

Genisys is really doing well overseas, Arnie’s biggest b-o abroad. It hasn’t even reached China/Japan. “Mike” had a lower budget but it was marketed heavily. For people who have seen Mike 1, “No McConnaughey, No watchy”. I think Scarfy’s wife jinxed the film.

      • Ysohawt1 says:

It definately needed Matthew MacConaughey it was missing something without him. IMO
        He’s very charismatic.

    • Anne tommy says:

No contest for me lisa2, it’s Chris Pratt all the way. Not one attractive man in this “magic” cast, all I’ve seen is the Poster and it’s Pretty Revolting.

      • Mixtape says:

If I’m reading your comment right…. Chris Pratt for Magic Mike XXXL? I’m interested…

      • I agree…..that’s why I haven’t watched either of the movies. None of the guys are hot. If I’m gonna watch a stripper movie, I need more than Matt Bomer!

      • Shelly says:

I would argue that it needs more Matt Bomer.. ALL Matt Bomer!
I totally got the hots for this guy watching White collar

      • Miss M says:

@Shelly: the close-ups in his beautiful face, wow! Boy, he can sing!

  3. cleveland girl says:

I found the movie to be super disappointing with NOT enough dancing. The only thing that saved it was Jada! She was the best part. Andie Mccdowel was good too. Amber Heard was a total buzzkill!!

    • Kdlaf says:

Yep! Amber Heard’s character was pretty much an angsty…teenager? The movie was still fun though – it could have been like 45 mins though haha

    • LadyMTL says:

Amber Heard’s character was useless. She was the typical “I’m so cool and different with my 18 jangly necklaces, watch me sit alone in the kitchen eating cake because I’m over all this” type. The movie would have lost nothing if she hadn’t been in it.

And I agree, there wasn’t enough dancing in it for my liking, though most of the dancing they did show was fun. I loved Joe Maganiello’s convenience store routine, it was too funny. But yeah, I can see why it didn’t open at number 1.

    • Beth No. 2 says:

Sounds like Amber Heard plays another useless character like Cody Horn did in the original. I haven’t watched XXL but it would take some monumental suckage to be worse than Cody, who looked like a angsty sourpuss with the emoting capacity of a shrivelled peanut.

      • Ysohawt1 says:

Jada Pinkett was the biggest female character. Amber wasn’t even a big female character.

I think it needed more dancing and Matthew MacConaughey more Andie MacDowell and just a tighter storyline.

The REAL problem was the story just drifted and their weren’t enough dance scenes,

  4. Jessica says:

I feel like the first Magic Mike movie captured two audiences. People who wanted to see naked guys dance, and people who were intrigued by the great reviews and Steven Soderbergh’s directing. It played at my local art house theatre last time, it’s not there this time.

All the promo told me this time around they’ve just gone after that first audience, so I won’t be seeing it.

  5. Tig says:

Saw on another site that the hope is that box office will build as it was prob difficult for “groups” of women to go see over 4th due to vacations, other commitments, but that this will change going forward. I like Channing Tatum fine, and don’t see where Jupiter Ascending flopping can be laid at his feet. My guess is that folks were put off the sequel by reports as to how the first was a downer.

    • ncboudicca says:

I’m wondering about the same thing, because I would’ve seen it already but the friend I’m going with is at the beach all week, so we likely won’t get to it for another couple of weeks.

    • Amanda says:

My friends and I are seeing it this week for that exact reason. The fourth was too busy I go. My SO and I watched Jupiter ascending last night and it was perfectly enjoyable. Though, Charming potato had zero chemistry with Mila Kunis (who I thought was great in it). I think his character was supposed to be silent and moody but it didn’t come across very well.

    • Lilacflowers says:

My friends are going to see it next weekend. Too many had commitments this weekend and, unlike Jurassic World, it’s not something you bring the kids to see.

The only ones who will bear the weight of Jupiter Ascending are the Wachowskis. The problem is they let Sean Bean’s character live. Sean Bean has to die for a movie to be any good.

    • Size Does Matter says:

Agree, bad timing on opening. I’m going with girlfriends later but was busy with the kids last weekend at the beach.

    • KellyBee says:

I disagree “Minions” it’s coming out next week which well take 1st place “Jurassic World” and “Inside Out” will most likely 2nd and 3rd place. I don’t see Magic Mike making $15 to $20 million in its second weekend for such heavy competition.

  6. Jegede says:

    Amber Heard’s losing streak continues.

    • Ysohawt1 says:

Jada Pinkett. Was the main female character in the film. Amber barely had scenes.
If anything the movie needed more dance scenes and tighten the story up.

  7. Abbott says:

Eh. He has Tarantino, Coen Brothers, 23 Jump Street, and Xmen up next. He’s fine.

  8. Jayna says:

Maybe before the main draw was Matthew McConaughey’s name on the movie that got the big first weekend box office sales before.

  9. Louise177 says:

A movie or two bombing doesn’t mean that Channing’s career is over. I doubt that anybody remembers that the Jupiter movie came out. I think part of the disappointing boxoffice was overexposure. The cast was everywhere. Also there’s still overseas money.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Gugu and Eddie would like us all to forget Jupiter Ascending

    • Happy21 says:

Totally! If a couple of box office bombs ends a career, why the hell is JLo still acting? 😉

    • Ysohawt1 says:

And the movie is expected to build , many women over the fourth were busy with families or friends parties.

  10. Marianne says:

I didn’t see XXL mainly because the first one wasn’t THAT great. I just didn’t really have an interest this time round. Plus, it also did have to go up against a Terminator movie.

    • cr says:

Except not too many people went to see the Terminator movie either, its gross was at the low end of expectations. Especially consider its cost and the history of the franchise.
Also not sure they were really going after the same primary audience.

  11. Izzy says:

This movie could only have opened at one other worse time: directly opposite a Marvel movie. Opening right at the start of a holiday weekend when another Jurassic movie was sure to be stomping the box office was the worst planning. Who thought that was a good idea?

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

Jurassic World is released 1 month ago

      • Lilacflowers says:

And it is still crushing the box office

      • Bridget says:

No one really anticipated Jurassic World being as huge as it is. Plus, it’s not like Magic Mike XXL and Jurassic are in direct competition with each other – XXL’s audience was something like 95% women, where Jurassic World has been marketed heavily towards kids and families. The movie that chose the wrong weekend was Terminator.

I think it’s interesting that this is being described as a disappointment, because it’s a small budget R rated movie about a bunch of male strippers, and it still made a good chunk of money.

    • lucy2 says:

Yeah, they should have released it later in July or into August. Too much competition right now.

I saw the first one on HBO or something, and thought it was incredibly dull. No interest in the second one.

  12. rkintn says:

I’ve seen MMXXL twice already and loved it both times. I totally thought it was way better than the first. I think it will have legs and stick around for a bit and I’m sure the video sales will be quite nice for them as well:)

    • MissC says:

I saw it twice already too and you’re right, it is way better than the first movie. I really enjoyed it and I foresee it gaining box office momentum in the next few weeks.

  13. Miss M says:

I saw it yestersay and I enjoyed it. I loved Jada’ s character! The excuse they gave for MM and Alex P not be there was fine and left some room for their return.

Kaiser, can we talk about Twitch?! He was the main reason I went to see the movie. Unfortunately, his dance routine was with the star of the movie and the camera kept focusibg on Amber’s reaction…

  14. Liz says:

The movie did even worse 11 millions for the weekend and 26millions for the 5 days. You can see at boxofficemojo

    • Miss M says:

Many of my friends who want to see were on the beach celebrating the 4th of July. The movie theater that I go regularly was completely empty for all movies.

  15. Talie says:

I’ve heard that people think there should’ve been more nudity and it ended up being rather vanilla. The first film was gritty and hardcore in a way — it was also original.

  16. JB says:

I went with a group of 8 girls on opening night to a sold out show. We watched it in one of the ultra luxe cinemas that have the reclining seats and serve food and alcohol; lemme say, I don’t if it was the booze or what but the entire theater was hooting, hollering, and clapping!

I personally thought it was SO much better than the first one. I’m going to see if again with another girlfriend this Wednesday cuz you know, priorities…

  17. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

So Magic Mike XXL was a flop?

    • Ysohawt1 says:

No it already made its money back, so it actually was not a flop by a longshot.
It wasn’t number One, but it was not a flop at all.

  18. Colette says:

The movie reportedly only cost $15M so it’s not a flop,it will make a profit.

    • cr says:

Box office dot com has total budget, including marketing, at 45 million, but still not a flop. And that’s just box office, who knows what they’ll make with DVD/video sales.
I think it’s currently considered a disappointment because it probably won’t make as much money as the first one.

      • so says:

it’s probably make over 100 mil ww total. so they didnt lose. WB only pay the marketing and tatum paid the film. but like you said it’s an disappointment but it’s not a flop. still gonna make profit.

  19. Lynnie says:

It did better than I expected it to

  20. Hope says:

I totally enjoyed the movie but I didn’t go in with high expectations. I laughed way more than the first one since this one didn’t have a serious story under it all.

The convenience store scene had me doubled over with tears running down my face – after a bit I was laughing at how hard I was laughing which made it funnier to me. I was LOVE to have been that store clerk.

So, yes to a movie on the dancer mansion, that place looks like 100 kinds of fun!

  21. Happy lavender says:

The novelty of seeing a male stripper was over for most people. No Matthew to help anchor the movie (sorry, but Joe and Matt are not stars). Hardly any nudity for a stripper movie?!? Mediocre reviews compared to the critically acclaimed original. Other movies with huge critical acclaim and appeal are open and more coming this week and next. MM 2 will be forgotten by the end of the week despite months and months of massive and expensive promotion.

Not a flop, but will not make anything close to what the original made. So much for those huge paydays they were expecting. Should have followed Kristen Wiig’s lead when she declined Bridesmaids 2 and the whole lightening in a bottle scenario.

  22. RN says:

I saw it last night and I liked it a lot. The dialogue is weak in parts (Amber Heard’s character is beyond annoying and her interactions with Mike are pointless and flat). However, there were so many points in the movie that everyone in the theater (myself included) were laughing, whooping and hollering. It really is great fun. I rarely go the the movies anymore and I’m glad I made an exception for this one. It’s so much more fun with a crowd of people.

At the end of the day, I don’t care about box office. I care about how much I enjoyed something, and this was a wonderful way to spend two hours out of the heat. I’d definitely see it again.

  23. Cali says:

I think the holiday weekend was a bad time to release this one. Everyone is on vacation or with their families – not an ideal time for ladies to get away with their girlfriends for the night…

  24. Happy21 says:

I went and saw it with a group of girlfriends over the weekend and I thought it was a blast. I thought Joe M and his quirky jokes and his convenience store routine added the necessary comedic parts to the movie. I was actually surprised at his acting chops. The Charming Potato danced and did what he does. He’s also very funny. Matt Bomer, well Matt Bomer is as perfect as a human being can get. He is beautiful, he sings and he dances. Yes Please!!! Andie McDowell was really a smart casting choice as well. I am not a fan of Jada Pinkett Smith but suffered through Gotham last season with her in it and came to not mind her. Not my fave but not terrible. Amber Heard…really they should have just cast Kristen Stewart if they were looking for teenage angst. She was SO blah. Her character had zero personality at all. Was she supposed to be a love interest for Mike? I didn’t even know. Their chemistry and her casting was just off.

I also thought it ran a little longer than necessary. The part where they were at Jada’s stripper mansion went on and on and on.

All in all it was pretty decent. It’s not supposed to be an Oscar contender. I have a friend who wasn’t able to make it and I’ll go with her to see it in a couple of weeks.

  25. JENNA says:

Hopefully, audiences will learn to stop throwing their money to lame cash-grab movies.

    • suziekew says:

One would hope, but no, they still throw away good money for drivel…..and this movie is drivel. I agree with Dustin Hoffman when he says movies of today are worse than they have been in 50 years.

    • Skins says:

Yep, Got tired of watching these tools strutting with their bromance act like this was some guaranteed hit that was going to kill at the box office. Guess Tatum isn’t as big a star as he thought

  26. D. says:

MM isn’t a flop for a movie of this budget, but it is a disappointment considering the high expectations and hype. I’m pretty sure WB was ready to go on with sequels and continue making easy money – and now it’s obvious the interest faded away. I doubt it’s gonna affect Channing’s career, but there was a time a few years ago when he was thought to be turning to gold everything he touched and got all the offers in HW, now other guys like Chris Pratt are taking his spot, but it’s a natural turn of things, moviegoers tend to lose interest and move on to new fresh faces.

  27. Andria says:

I loved it, as did my husband, but I would watch Channing and Twitch dance for two hours fully clothed. MMXXL was not a great movie, but it was entertaining and fun and the dance routines were sexy as hell. This is the first time I haven’t wanted Joe Manganiello off the screen as quickly as possible – I can’t stand him but he was great in this movie. His “LOOK AT ME” worked. Bonus points for the line about vampires.

If the scenes at Rome’s or Joe’s and Channing/Twitch’s final dance routines left you cold, then this is not the movie for you. Me? Fanning myself. I will see it again while it is theaters, hopefully with girlfriends. I agree that the 4th of July was a difficult time to release this kind of movie. It is not family friendly, and much of the target audience was busy with family for the holiday weekend.

  28. dj says:

I saw it with my sister this weekend. There were fireworks! We had a great time laughing, clapping, etc. It is the first time I have ever really liked Joe M. or Jada Pinkett Smith. JPS really worked it and was super delightful as if she spoke (kind of POV) of all women…calling them “Queens.” Joe was sexy and not too meat-headed as in the past. Channing and Twitch were good. Matt Bomer is delicious. We had a great girl day together. It was a nice, fun movie. I recommend it for a girls night out. Yum.

  29. Tre says:

Your numbers are wrong. You gave Termionator 5 numbers. Which is big bomb too. Magic Mike 2 made even less. 11 mil for weekend and 26 for five days.

  30. Camille (the Original) says:

The public has a new charming meat head that they are in love with – Chris Pratt.

Charming Potato’s time is nearly over (one can only hope!).

    • Andria says:

My 11 yr old daughter has claimed Chris Pratt, and she has a “rule” that I can’t like the same celebrities she does, so as cute as Pratt is, I’ll happily stick with Charming Potato and his insane dance skills.

  31. Smurphy says:

I don’t really care if it’s not a great movie, my friends and I are going on Friday for my 30th because it looks like a care-free and entertaining movie. Also, half-naked Matt Bomer!

  32. Abby says:

I saw Magic Mike on July 2. My take: the dancing in the first one was better, but the story in the second was more fun. “Story” which was even less of a story, but a lot less angsty. Good riddance to Pettyfer, but I missed Matthew McConaughey. I wish they’d get a decent FUN love interest for mike, instead of frowny wet blankets like these last two movies. I was surprised at how rah rah girl power it was. There were some nice scenes, like the ones in the mansion with Andie MacDowell. It was just silly when it was supposed to be silly. Jada was great, surprisingly. She was kind of a nicer version of her over the top self in Gotham. I would TOTALLY go to a strip club if it was like hers!

They could have done SO MUCH with the stripper convention idea, but it was not even the point of the movie. The road trip was the point… but you get used to movies like Pitch Perfect where the end competition is a BFD… and the convention was just kind of meh. But the performance was fun.

  33. Nikki L. says:

I’m with you, I thought Jada was actually wonderful for what type of movie this was, in terms of acting chops. I’d totally watch a spinoff of her as well, her character was cool.

  34. Yep says:

    who watches these movies?

  35. HEJ says:

Did Amber heard miss to reject this script when she was sorting through the piles of scripts she gets and throwing out those who objectifies people?

  36. TOM says:

It did poorly since one of the stripper/rent boys sporting a Confederate Flag thong.

  37. phlyfiremama says:

The problem with the box office wasn’t that it wasn’t a 4 day holiday weekend~the problem with the box office is the movie options, frankly, sucked. The 5th Terminator movie, really?? Magic Mike XXL~not exactly family fare, is it? Ok, kids, lets go see the male stripper movie! Hollywood has really fallen into a huge rut~very few movies are original or captivating; it seems as if Hwood has just gotten into the mindset “whatever. meh.” when it comes to making or promoting films. With Redbox,Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other streaming movie options fewer people are going to the movies, and being MUCH pickier (not less so) about which movies they DO go spend their money on. They need to get back to good movies, THAN make a movie about the movie stars rather than just continue to count on movie stars to make the movie compelling. It seems that the whole “movie star” as objects of reverence is falling out of favor as well. Get it together, movie industry!
