Naomie Harris covers the July issue of The Edit to promote Southpaw, the latest Oscar-bait film from The Weinstein Co. The stars of this film shall soon be everywhere, but the good news is that Jake G. would rather talk about the moon than his physical transformation to play a welterweight boxer. Naomie plays the social worker who helps Jake’s character get his life back on track. Actually, she represents the boxer’s daughter, and I hope she doesn’t end up becoming a love interest while Jake gets to nab the Oscar glory.
Naomi’s editorial is stunning, and you can see it here. In the interview, she talks about her own real-life therapy experience:
Why she did this movie: “[The film’s director] Antoine [Fuqua] called me. He was so passionate, so persuasive, that by the end of the call, I was like, “I’m getting on the plane to Pittsburgh and working with this man.’ I’m so glad I did it. He pushes you really hard, but he shows he has faith that you can do it. He makes actors feel valued and important, and creates an environment that is totally safe. All those things mean you can and want to take risks. I had the best time.”
She’d never attend a real boxing match: “I’d never do that. You smell death in the air. That’s my worst possible nightmare.
She had reparenting therapy years: “People like Billy [Hope, Jake’s character] don’t know how to parent. I did The Hoffman Process recently, which is all about learning re-parenting, because so many of us come from dysfunctional parents, and we get trapped in negative patterns that stem from that. To break those patterns you have to be in a space where you can recreate what you went through and deal with it.”

Therapy can work wonders for many people and for all sorts of purposes. I’m glad Naomie had a good experience and could bring her knowledge of the subject to a meaty role. At least, I hope the role is a substantial one. This is a heavy movie that will receive a lot of awards attention and a perfect time for Naomie to break out in a huge way. She deserves to be a bigger name in the acting world.

I thought reparenting was a total joke and refused to participate for a long time. Finally committed and it made a huge difference in how I saw myself. Even though it may not help everyone really glad she brought it up.
what is reparenting about, would you mind sharing?
I came to see what reparenting was. So since you have first hand experience, could you please explain? Thanks.
I don’t know what the Hoffman thing is, but my therapist had me go back into my memories and feel what I was going through as a child and then imagine I was her adult friend and I was talking to her and supporting her through the trauma. There’s a lot of details I’m missing (long time ago) but the feeling that I wasnt inherently bad was such a relief and I felt so much more compassion for myself. It was huge for me.
This sounds very like some EMDR therapy I did (in EMDR they also use alternating sounds–ear to ear–and cover one eye). My experience with EMDR was extremely positive. After years of carrying around shame from a sexual assault, the trauma was just…gone. I just didn’t feel that persistent shame. I stopped getting triggered by things…it was amazing. Previously I had to be hospitalized from a panic attack that was triggered by watching Prince of Tides so it was bad. Now…gone.
Love her!
Sigh. I’m crushing so hard on her.
Also, I normally hate mullet-style but WANT that last dress!
Have loved her since 28 Days Later – she is just so, so , so great! #ultimategirlcrush
Same 28 days made me a fan for life.
I love her as well. She is really talented and beautiful. I thought her Winne Mandela was excellent, probably my fav of her work. Also, she and Daniel Craig could power a small city with their sexual chemistry in the last Bond film.
I love her but I’m not in love with her fashion sense. Oh well at least she is willing to take risks…she looks beautiful on the cover of The Edit though.
She’s so gorgeous and articulate. Love her.
She is beyond gorgeous.
Re-parenting? Where in THEE hell are all these words coming from? Or has ‘this’ always been a thing that I’ve missed out on? Sheesh.
Beautiful girl, by the way!
I adore Naomie Harris. This makes me want to see this film, otherwise I wouldn’t have been too interested. This also piques my interest in the Hoffmann process. Over the last few weeks I’ve realized I really need to see a therapist about my childhood so this is yet another sign.
I think this is the role Lupita was going to do before she was cast in Star Wars. I like Naomie so I hope the film turns out well but the reception has not been that great.
What gorgeous skin she has… (Spa crush sigh)
Any of you learning more about this kind of therapy, check out Schema Therapy. I had it before starting DBT to treat my BPD and it’s hard…but worth it.
How are you doing with DBT, if you don’t mind my asking? I am in it too and I am not too committed to it. Thanks.
Hey sorry to jump in here, but I did DBT and it really worked. It is not easy, though. I hated it, especially at first, but it is so effective it is worth it to stick to it. I don’t think anyone likes DBT. It’s just being honest with yourself and pushing yourself through the rough parts. I can’t stress enough how helpful it is. Hope you are doing well and good luck! You can make it!
Thank you so much! I guess I am just being “willful” right now. Your answer helps though.
stunning!
Good for her, therapy really is a good thing. I didn’t know that she’s in southpaw, she’s so gorgeous.
Sounds a bit like auditing in Scientology… Sooooo…..
i doubt it. Insurance covered my therapy 🙂
She’s stunning and very talented!
She’s gorgeous and a really good actress. Deserves a lot more attention than she gets.
She seems like a lovely person and her complexion is gorgeous, but I think she’s a really bland actress.
She seems very interesting and thoughtful. And she’s incredibly beautiful with amazing fashion sense! Wow. I totally have a new girl crush!
