Katy Perry: ‘If I could go back to school, I would study world history’

Katy Perry posts some of the most envy-inspiring vacation photos, as you can see from these Instagrammed Greece and Tokyo pics. Of course, these pictures aren’t really a vacation. Katy’s on a world tour, and she grabs a day off when she can. I’m still jealous after trying to leave my own city a few times over the past year and failing to make it happen because #life.

Katy’s spoken before about how she’s bummed over her loosey-goosey education, which happened because her parents sent her to Christian schools that only emphasized religion. She uses travel as an opportunity to visit museums, but she knows it’s not the same experience as studying for exams. Forbes magazine released some more quotes from their recent Katy interview where she talks about wishing she could go back to school:

She was visiting Rome for a few days: “I’ve had pasta twice today. And we’re not even at dinner. I was just kind of dreaming of having a month or even just a couple of week to go throughout all of Italy and see the countryside. It looks so quaint and beautiful and unaffected.”

On her education dreams: “If I could go back to school, I would study history. I’d study world history, just to know how people work, and how they evolved, and where we come from. I feel like when you know about what happened in the past you can do better for your future.”

[From Forbes]

Nothing’s stopping Katy from ordering some history textbooks, which would teach her the same principles she’d learn in a lecture hall. Katy has her GED, and colleges love to accept celebrities, but what good would Katy experience from going all out for a degree? Admittedly, I have a chip on my shoulder about the high cost of education (still paying for it) and think if a degree isn’t necessary, colleges don’t deserve their ridiculous fees. Katy can learn world history from reading books, and she could use a few lessons. Mainly, it’s nice to hear from a pop celebrity without outside interests.

Well you can always start by buying high-school level textbooks on history and hire a tutor. No shame in that, in fact it would be really admirable.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

Great courses on tape, she could listen to them. And I have heard that reading actually works.

    • ncboudicca says:

Wouldn’t that be awesome, if one could afford that? I think I would start with a French tutor and try to pick up some of my high school French, then move on to Spanish, then I’d do some Art History and then Astronomy…

      • BooBooLaRue says:

then Mandarin, I need to dust off my Mandarin, then on to archeology and maybe Arabic, art history yes! and of course, geology. Maybe a degree in gemology for fun?

      • ncboudicca says:

Oh yes, gemology would be good. I think sailing navigation skills would be handy, too.

  2. j.eyre says:

I agree about the degree not being necessary for someone in Ms. Perry’s position and I, too, would like to take a swipe at higher education’s fees but this is kind of a silly thing to say; she can go back to school and school is just one way to learn about something.

I also realize pointing out Ms. Perry saying something silly can fall on the redundant spectrum.

  3. Jaded says:

Once again she sounds like an airhead. “World history…how people work, and how they evolved, and where we come from.” So does she mean history as cultural? Anthropological? Socio-linguistic? All of the above? I think she just says things like that to make people believe she’s got some depth to her. Ya…she’s about as deep as a dish of water.

    • ncboudicca says:

I’m not going to diss her for that – I was a History major and I appreciate someone in the spotlight saying that the topic is interesting, even if she was kind of vague about it. So many people think history is boring…

    • feebee says:

That’s a bit mean. There are many human petrie dishes out there, I don’t think she’s one of them. Many subjects cover several aspects.

  4. GreenBunny says:

She’s lucky. She has the luxury and means to learn whatever she wants, without the stress and anxiety of tests and grades. Plus she doesn’t have the added pressure of finding a well paying job to pay off and justify the student loans the end of it all.

  5. jugstorecowboy says:

    OMG, that Japanese garden!

  6. FloridaFresh says:

I can’t believe anyone would criticize her for saying she wishes she had a better education and would study world history to get a better understanding of the cultures she encounters. Doesn’t sound like an airhead to me. Sounds humble, actually.

    • ncboudicca says:

      Agreed!

    • Samtha says:

It’s not the sentiment that’s the problem–it’s that nothing is stopping her from educating herself. She has the resources to get any kind of education she’d like, even if it’s just picking up a nonfiction book and reading it before bed.

    • Linn says:

The thing is that there is absolutely NOTHING stopping her from getting a better education and getting informed about world history. People with far less time and money do so all the time. It’s not like she has to enroll in a full-time course, she could start by reading books, watching good documentaries or getting a part-time tutor.

I just doubt she really wants to and imho it sounds like she’s just saying stuff like that in the hope that people see her as a smart and intellectual person. With Katy it’s all hollow words.

      • Jayna says:

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner.

There’s plenty of people that didn’t go to college who are well-read and have an interest in many different subjects. My brother is blue collar, has his own small business, didn’t go to college, but was in the National Guard overseas, and he has taken up painting and has really become fascinated with artists and books on art and traveling to museums and he is also a history buff, who reads many great books on history in many contexts, wars, historical figures, documentaries etc.

      • Anne says:

Yes! In my experience, as long as you’re curious and have access to some basic reading material and time, you can find your way.

I find that it’s much easier for me to absorb information now that I’m older and out of school. When I was younger, I was so stressed by the pressure of anticipating examinations that I really didn’t engage deeply with the material and, unfortunately, didn’t retain as much as I’d like.

  7. Corrie says:

Katy, hire a teacher to travel and teach you on the road. Follow the course work and learn from your travels bc if anyone needs world history and sociology its Katy. It would do Katy and all her counterparts a world of good to have a history lesson. American history and World History. Somehow we went wrong, as a society, we didn’t push understanding our origin hard enough because Millennials could have better preparedness here with all the technology and accessibility to history. Good start Katy. Take Kristen Stewart, Justin Bieber, The Kardashians, Taylor Swift and Rihanna with you.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

      and Ireland Baldwin too please.

    • Lynnie says:

Actually that’s a really good point about celebs nowadays and how if they had paid the slightest attention in school a lot of their faux pas wouldn’t have happened. Sadly I don’t think the situation will get that much better. The only classes I know that offer an in-depth look into their subjects and integrate with the world around them are the AP/IB courses. Everyone else is just learning for the test

  8. Samtha says:

    It’s called READING, Katy.

  9. Murphy says:

It’s fun to study history but hard to get a job in that field.

  10. Jayna says:

I’m always expanding my horizons. It’s called a library and books, Katy, or Amazon and books.

She’s still on tour? I thought her tour ended a while back.. That’s one long tour she’s doing. She must have taken some time off before going back out. She was just at the Fare Thee Well Grateful Dead concerts at Soldier Field with John Mayer. John was at all three. She was there with him at least one day, if not all of them.

  11. Lady says:

She is my doppleganger, especially that Japanese garden photo. I often get told by strangers Im a dead ringer for her… I never know how to feel about that haha!

  12. feebee says:

She can go back to school. Plenty of online courses. Or as many others have suggested, just read some books. Or just talk to the locals in the places she visiting. Soak it all up Katy.

  13. Marianne says:

If she’s that serious about wanting to get an education, when why doesn’t she? She could online classes if she’s worried about her safety by going to a public college, or if she doesn’t want to take the time off. Like, she has options. It’s great to hear someone value education *cough* jayden *cough*. But, at the same time it doesn’t seem like she’s doing much about it.

  14. Tacos and TV says:

Am I the only person who does get her? I don’t like Taylor Swift, but she has an image, Ariana Grande has an image, Lorde, Lady Gaga all of them have images… I don’t know or get what her image is and maybe that’s why I don’t get her… Not sure. even Miley has a thing.. this woman seems like a mixed bag that I don’t understand.

  15. Zigggy says:

I totally get it- I had no interest in history in high school, but now it fascinates me and I love to learn as much as I can. It’s hard to find the time to sit & read though, but I guess it’s all about priorities.

  16. LA Juice says:

this sounds like a cop-out. Why can’t she go back to school? She’s got plenty of money and there are all sorts of ways to get an education as a filthy rich celebrity in this town. No excuse!

  17. TeaAndSympathy says:

My son detested school. This was mainly because a lot of teachers at his school treated their pupils like complete idiots, as well as their belittling and bullying behaviour towards many pupils. I can’t count the number of times I was called to the school because my son had taken this or that teacher to task, and made them cry by calling them out on their behaviour. He got tired of fighting the system and left early, which he now (somewhat) regrets. However, he’s never stopped learning. We’ve always been a family of voracious readers, and even at 16, his bedroom was crammed with books – every topic from artificial sweeteners to zephyrs… Nothing’s changed. He started his own business which takes up a lot of time, but his greatest pleasure is still reading and learning. People are stunned by his intellect (must be a throwback to his maternal grandfather) and his ability to recall, process, analyse and synthesise information. My point is that formal education isn’t for everyone, but books definitely are. I’m now at an age where every spare dollar is spent on books – something I’ve looked forward to for most of my life. Aaahh…books…

  18. Emily C. says:

“World history” is not a major. That would be like studying “science”.

What’s stopping her from going back to school? She’s wealthy, healthy, young, etc. Go to school!

  19. MerlinsWife says:

The only way she’s going to study “world history” is if she runs out of costume ideas.

  20. Clint says:

Amazes me how people like Katy claim they love history & want to learn from its mistakes but never catch the fact that the growing state policies they support via progressivism have to led to massive failures in society, oppression of the people in such governments, and eliminates social freedoms they think they’re gaining now over & over & over through the ages via whatever -ist regime you choose from socialism, to communism, to stateism.
