I’m not expecting a ton of comments on this post, which is too bad because I genuinely enjoy covering anything having to do with Tilda Swinton. Tilda did some meager press on behalf of her out-of-nowhere supporting role in Trainwreck, and one of those interviews was with The Guardian. This isn’t a typical interview – there are only a handful of quotes from Tilda – but it’s an excellent profile of her career, how delightfully strange she is and how utterly beloved she is by directors. Here are my favorite parts:
Why she plays such weird characters: “The thing that keeps me being a performer is my interest in society’s obsession with identity, because I’m not sure that I really believe identity exists.”
Working with indie directors: “Usually, with me, the project is always the second thing. The film-maker comes first. Films grow out of the relationship.”
Being cast as The Ancient One in Doctor Strange: She will soon start shooting a Marvel blockbuster, Doctor Strange, but there is a Swinton-esque twist – she doesn’t yet know if she will play the part as a man or a woman.
First of all… Tilda sort of blew my mind. What if identity doesn’t exist? What if we’re not how we define ourselves because there is no such thing as “definition” or “oneself”? As for Tilda possibly playing The Ancient One as a man… that’s interesting. The character is written as a man and I guess it really doesn’t matter if Tilda plays the character as a man, woman or “undetermined.”

Kaiser and Tilda, don’t forget to pass it.
😉
She is just the epitome of cool. I adore Tilda.
She will always be one of my top crushes. Tilda is wonderful.
Zhuangzi says that the perfect man has no self. It’s Daoist and pretty cool thinking.
“Beyond our ideas of right-doing and wrong-doing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about. Ideas, language, even the phrase ‘each other’ doesn’t make sense any more.” ~ Rumi
One of my favorite (not that I’d ever pick a favorite poet in a very un-rumiesque way) poets. But damn. Just sayin.
I love that she’s so different. Quirky, masculine, feminine, cool, weird, interesting, smart, she’s not a boxed doll.
I adore her and her comment about identity is an interesting one. I wonder if she means, as a performer, whether the identities she absorbs make it so her own is in flux. Or that she gives more space for her parts and diminishes her own during the process so that at the end, she becomes the sum of her parts.
I would love for her Ancient One role to be “undetermined”. My favorite role of hers was of the angel Gabriel in Constantine, where she was truly [and beautifully] androgynous.
YES! I was thinking of that role, too, when I read this. It would be so awesome if she played it similarly.
She saved Constantine for me, and I’m a Keanu fan.
She was terrific in Snowpiercer…utterly bizarre.
I adore her and all her versatility. She is a chameleon and I could watch her do just about anything!
didn’t she play Gabriel in Constantine with Keanu Reeves and Rachel Weiss? I’m pretty sure she did, in which she did an excellent job of it. You couldn’t be a 100% certain if Gabriel was supposed to be male or female. She plays the androgynous role so well. I also loved her in that film with Tom Hiddleston, Only Lovers Left Alive
My favorite part is when he takes her on a tour of Detroit & points out Jack Whites house. For some reason the way she says ‘I love Jack White’ cracks me up. It is perfection to my ears for some reason.
I love the whole movie.
Comments like these make me feel stupid and shallow. When I was a child, I would furrow my brow and try to figure out if time was real because tomorrow would be today and today would be yesterday. I gave it up as useless and haven’t worried about it since. if identity isn’t real, then am I not real? I just hate that kind of sh$t.
Sounds like baby GNAT was quite the existentialist. I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.
Goo goo ga ju.
It’s actually a very Buddhist approach, that to live passionately, sincerely, and authentically, one must let go of attachment. This can include attachment to an idea of the self and what you are, which really is an idea you have grown into. Letting go means opening yourself to new possibilities.
She was so funny in Trainwreck. She really can do anything when it comes to acting.
Yes, she was terrific in Trainwreck. But it really unsettled me to see how make-up could even make Tilda Swinton look ordinary. It made me want to go and wash my own make-up off, honestly. But I’m a blonde too, and I hate the way my face disappears when I take off my eye make-up. So. Well. So…So I’m leaving my make-up on, but dammit I admire Tilda for not only going barefaced in her real life, but absolutely f’ing ROCKING it. Wish I had that courage. Not that I would look as cool as she does, but.
I love Tilda. She’s awesome and she’s Miss Coolness. I find the identity question very interesting, specifically when it comes to acting. Btw: My Kitten Tom & Tilda say hello 😉
I love her Pope dress <3
There is no identity. I am Tilda and Tilda is me.
Queen!!!
I will always click on anything Tilda! I think her best quality is a complete lack of awareness of how intriguing nearly everyone finds her. Between that and her unerring eye of the roles to select….she’s my jammmmm!!
Google Tilda Swinton photography. The camera loves this woman.
I think she’s on to something here. Don’t we really just absorb ‘who we are’ from what we are surrounded with? So ‘I’ would be completely different if I were born in a different country, time, socioeconomic bracket, etc…
I have no scientific proof, but remain convinced she’s pretty much an alien goddess come down to show us all how it can – and how it should, and how it shall – be done.
One of my favorite roles of hers was in Burn After Reading. She played an irritable pediatrician (who probably hated kids); she was cheating on John Malkovich with George Clooney. There were a lot of great performances in that film but she was hysterical.
Identity is like art, Tilda: you may not be able to define it, but you know it when you see it.
She is one of the most interesting actors around (and one of the “posh” crowd, btw) but sometimes . . . she talks the kind of tosh that only someone who has lived her kind of life could possibly spout.
Well, I know what my deep thoughts today will be about! Love Tilda, so much.
She is fascinating. Full stop.
And I loved her as Gabriel, so cooly and ethereally sociopathic.
I recently watched the BTS documentary for OLLA and it’s not hard to guess why directors love her, she is very insightful, and it can be very helpful to have someone like Tilda on set. She is awesome!
Just commenting and adding page views bc I love SWINTON and want to have my brain melt out of my ears more often.
Goddess. That is all.
She may be the only reason I will even contemplate paying money to see Doctor Strange. I’ve said that before, and am only saying it again now because I want the comment count to be high enough that we get more Tilda articles on a regular basis. She rocks.
I am in complete agreement with you re Dr. Strange!
Marvel really lost me with their Phase 2/3 transition and way forward–I’m just so uninterested in Ant-Man and couldn’t be bothered to see Age of Ultron. Bendy as Dr. Strange didn’t get me excited either, but I do think Tilda will be the ideal Ancient One to school him–I can actually see them having excellent chemistry in an identy-free way! 😉
I am a fan of her work and enjoy her movies. Because Tilda Swinton says it than its wow. Thanks to all the educated comments from above, it is not new.
Please continue to post on her no matter how many comments/views!
We Tilda fans may be small but we love our ice queen 🙂
Seconded! I’ve adored Tilda for years.
It’s certainly something to ponder.
Oh, Orlando.
She has been in my bloodstream since 1992.
O yes she was magnificent in Orlando! Such an intruiging film (and role), it really made you think about the concept of gender. She was the perfect person to play it, been in love with her ever since.
I LOVE Tilda! I wish all K & C coverage could end forever & just be Tilda 24/7
