These breakup stories are getting out of hand. It is the summer of breakups! Now shade king Zayn Malik and Perrie Edwards have called off their engagement. Perrie was once called the “Yoko” of One Direction after fans decided she made Zayn leave the band. Now the grand romance is over, just as soon as it began.
Zayn and Perrie became engaged in 2013, but they were never meant to last. Even now, they’re both pop stars with busy schedules and competing interests. He’s Muslim, and she is Christian, and they’re both only still 22 years old. Earlier this year, the couple weathered a cheating scandal with various alleged mistresses. Now comes the inevitable breakup. People says Zayn did the deed, and Perrie is crushed:

The former One Direction singer has left his Little Mix fiancée “devastated,” according to a source.
Malik, 22, contacted Edwards, also 22, two weeks ago and said it was over.
“She’s been putting on a brave face, as Little Mix have had promotion to do, but she’s obviously devastated,” the source tells People. “Perrie’s being supported by her bandmates, but she’s really in pieces about this.”
The couple got engaged in August 2013, dashing the dreams of millions of One Direction fans.

He certainly (if those cheating stories were true) picked up a few groupies while he was with Perrie. The weird thing is that Zayn kept this story secret for over two weeks, even as he smilingly signed his new record deal. Perrie lost a popular fella, but he’s also a shady one. Perrie’s better off without Zayn. There, I said it.

I think it’s surprising because it was so sudden; if it had happened after one of the numerous cheating scandals, it would be different. They had literally just purchased a house together in July. As in, A MONTH AGO July.
He really just dumped her out of nowhere, after she took so much flack for his departure from 1D and right when she’s about to go on tour. He’s officially in my jerk hall of fame.
Agreed. She stood by him through the cheating scandal and leaving the band and he dropped her right after he signed that RCA deal. Sounds like Zayn is completely overhauling his life and burning every bridge along the way.

this is my skepticism poking its ugly head, but a single hot guy gets a lot more fans- and more ardent at that, keeping the fantasy alive that “yes, you may be the one he falls in love with. buy this CD, buy this concert ticket, BUY BUY BUY”
I don’t think it was at all sudden. They’ve had problems since the start. Everyone knew this was coming except Perrie. Aside from their personal problems, his parents would never have been ok with the marriage. There, I said it. He’s a player and will take what’s on offer, and when he’s ready, he’ll marry a “nice” Muslim lady, and likely cheat on her as well.

ITA. Not surprised by the split, but based on his online presence over the last few weeks/months she’s better off without him.
Agree. I personally wouldn’t want to be in a relationship with a guy who constantly looks so p*ssed off, strung out and humorless. Being young and in the limelight is tough, but it also feels like he really isn’t grown up yet. I got the feeling that it may be a while until being with this guy will be a fun, balanced thing, and until he will be content with his choices. This girl seems sweet, earnest and dedicated. I can imagine her putting up with an imbalance and being caring and understanding – but in some relationships, these traits and efforts aren’t always recognized and rewarded. I hope Z grows up to be a happier guy than he appears to be now. Good luck to both of them.
No surprise, but he let her take the flack for him leaving the band and when the hoopla dies down quits her too, that is cold.
Maybe now that they had SOOOO much time to spend together they realized they didn’t like each other lol. Some relationships are better when both are busy.

What is surprising to me is that his ex is supposedly only 22?! She looks older than that to me. I don’t mean that in a negative way–she is very pretty. She doesn’t look “old” but older. Like maybe 30 instead of 22.
If you look up pictures of her band Little Mix, they ALL look like they could be well into their 30s, even though they are in their very early 20s. It’s actually crazy. I had to wikipedia one of them in particular because I was convinced she had to be in her late 20s at the very least and was wondering how she was able to get into the band with girls in their late teens. They wear a TONNNNN of makeup in every pic I’ve seen of them, so maybe it’s really aging them beyond their years.
She and the rest of the band have TERRIBLE styling. They need to rehaul their whole damn team. She looks her age when she dials back on the bold lip and pounds of eyeliner.

My point is that there been cheating rumours for years and some evidence. Even before they got engaged. She was clinging to a guy that acted like a single guy most of the time.

I don’t think she gave up any self-respect. I imagine that she was manipulated by her management that told her Zayn was doing normal “boys will be boys” behavior; I imagine she was manipulated by the “fairytale” of being the savior of of the “self-destructive bad boy;” finally, I can imagine she was manipulated by a (very good looking) guy who told her to trust him because he loved her.

He’s cutting his ties to the pop world entirely to focus on R&B, which has always been his first love. First he dropped the band, then switched label, now he’s dumping Perrie. He’s on his own now. I wish him well.
Not sure why it was necessary to mention Zayn’s religion, since he is not particularly religious, nor is Perri. His ex-band mate Harry Styles is an extremely religious Christian and no one ever seems to bring that up.

Good for Perrie. Zayn has proven to be pretty shady and cold. And this relationship couldn’t have been more built on PR anyway. It’s funny to read this now though because I just happened to develop a major obsession with Little Mix over the past week, lol.
He’s no worse than Harry who shags everything that moves and got involved with at least one married woman, cheated on Taylor swift, aligned himself with PMK to up his celebrity in the U.S. Harry still comes out smelling of roses. It seems like white guy privilege.
Even in this article it’s mentioned that zayne is Muslim, he is not particular religious. Neither is Perry. From what I heard Harry is the most religious member in 1D, yet we never see his religion brought up when his behaviour is discussed.
I can kind of understand why zayne would feel alienated within that boy band machine of course His womanizing is douchey, but Imo he’s not worse than the other boys. They are all douches at this point.
How did Harry come out smelling like a rose when he had an affair with a married woman when he was 17? That’s a bit of a revisionist history. There were articles all over at the time condemning him and her for it. The husband gave a sob story article after they divorced blaming Harry for the affair and breaking up his marriage.
He didn’t cheat on Taylor. They weren’t even dating at the time he made out with Emily. They’d had dinner once and texted. Though it wouldn’t shock me if Taylor considered that cheating.
He was single when he was sleeping with Kendall so I don’t get why he should be condemned for it. Condemned for hanging out with the K-J family? Sure. Definitely. Made me think less of him actually. But sleeping with Kendall when he’s single, she’s single and they’re both of age is their business.
Harry is still called a womanizer by the press even though he’s gone stealth with his private life. He’s had the press, more than once, call his sister: a woman he’s shagging, a potential new girlfriend, a fling, and/or new love interest. Because they were near each other in a picture. As siblings sometimes are.
The press would love it if Harry were half as messy as Zayn is. They’d make so much money off of it. They’d eat it up. But Harry learned his lesson and went stealth with his sex/dating life. Could he still be as messy as he was at 17 and 18? Sure. But he makes sure to keep it on lock instead of it playing out in public.
Zayn’s problem is he got messy by cheating repeatedly on his girlfriends (Rebecca, Perrie, the Bel Ami girl) he was in monogamous relationships with and then didn’t help himself by refusing to take responsibility for his cheating when proof surfaced.
Zayn gets flack for Zayn’s own public actions and immaturity. Same as Harry did when he was publicly messy with his love life.
I disagree. Harry has a pretty good public image, his slutty behaviour is pretty much universally celebrated. Take Rita Ora, that girl behaves in much the same way as harry. Rita is always slutshamed.

@what i noticed a pattern between these famous capricorn men. They get engaged, as it was the case for Zayn and Jared Leto, or they get married, like Ralph Fiennes. Then the relationship starts to go downhill, but they still act like they love the girl and out of nowhere, they just break up. What leads then is their horndog behavior. Not generalizing capricorn men at all, but they do settle late in life; this is just something i’ve been paying attention in the media.

Funnily enough my housemate ran in the same circles as that girl in Thailand while she was living there. Not one ounce of shame on him (anf the girl didn’t care because she knew to make a quid afterwards).
The little mix/one D management is the same so the relationship was pretty easily brokered but poor little Perrie is better off. They’re nice girls, I’ve met them a few times. As for one D, Zayn seems like the one with a chip on his shoulder. The other boys just kind of roll with it.

My husband is Muslim and I was born Christian (now agnostic… Oh and my mother was Buddhist…) and we got married when I was 21 and him 22. I’m turning 25 this year and we’re still going strong, so for me, personally, I’ve never felt that religion played too much of a role in the demise of a relationship unless either party super religious…
