I saw The Man From UNCLE this weekend and I surprisingly enjoyed it… a lot. It’s very a very pretty film, possibly Guy Ritchie’s most beautifully shot film. Henry Cavill is surprisingly good, Armie Hammer was fine, I actually wanted MORE Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Debicki was absolutely stunning in her period costumes. The worst part? Yeah, it was kind of Alicia Vikander. It’s not that she was bad, per se. She had chemistry with Armie and she looked adorable in her mod-costumes. But her appallingly bad accent work kept taking me out of the film. One second she sounds Swedish (which she is, although her character was supposed to be German), the next second she sounds American, then British, then some kind of hokey German accent. It’s weird that no one told her “just pick an accent and stick with it, honey.”
Anyway, Alicia gave an interview to Vulture several days ago – you can read the full piece here. There were some highlights I wanted to show you, especially the Harvey Weinstein question in context.
The lack of female-dominated films: “I did four films in over a year, and I was like the only woman in all of them. It was not until I did Tulip Fever, a film that’s yet to come out, that I actually had scenes that were just me and another woman, Holliday Grainger. She’s a terrific actress, and we both got a bit shocked while we were doing our scenes, like, “This is so rare!” How strange it is that it is so rare.
She grew up with a lot of now-famous Swedes: “It’s because it’s so dark and cold for so many months of the year, so people just stay in and get creative! But yeah, I grew up with five or six girlfriends in Sweden who were my best friends, and Tove Lo is one of those girls in our group. I even shared a flat a few years back with my friends from Icona Pop, and they’re coming to the premiere tonight! And the other day, I saw a friend of mine, Rebecca Ferguson — another fellow Swede — in Mission: Impossible, and she was just kicking ass. She was extraordinary in that part.”
Vulture: At Cannes this year, Harvey Weinstein said he was so enamored of you that he asked you to play a part in Bradley Cooper’s chef movie, Burnt. What is it like to get that call from Harvey?
AV: “It was a very tight schedule, because I had to go off and do The Light Between Oceans, but first of all, I’m the biggest foodie imaginable. And I think they know that! As soon as I was able to work as a teenager, I saved up money to go to Barcelona and San Sebastian to go to restaurants. So I was thrilled because of that, and when they called me and asked me to come in for a few days, I was excited. It’s a very, very tiny part, just two big scenes, but they’re really good ones.”
I like how she avoided talking about Harvey Weinstein and his attentions towards her by just talking about the B-Coop movie. Although it’s worth noting that Harvey is behind Tulip Fever as well, so she has two Harvey-backed films now. Wait, is The Danish Girl produced by The Weinstein Company as well? Crap. Please, Alicia, do not become one of Harvey’s girls. Is there a real danger there? Usually he chooses blondes, but I could see how he would decide to force Alicia down everyone’s throats for a year or two. Let’s hope these roles don’t need any kind of major accent work.

Enjoyed Man from UNCLE. It was fun, a good old-fashioned spy spoof without all sorts of CGI explosions and stunts.
I’m glad to hear that. I am looking forward to watching it 😀
Set in 1963. Fabulous clothes, hair, make-up, sets, etc. it looked like Vogue Italia come to life. I usually dislike Guy Ritchie films, but this one I really liked. I also liked Alicia, became her fan with exMachina.
It’s a lot of fun. Deserves to do much better at the box office. Alicia *is* the worst part of it – didn’t think she had any chemistry with Hammer at all.
She should stick to playing robots.
I also thought she was the weakest part, which surprised me because while I haven’t liked her in interviews, I thought she was a good actor (Ex Machina is all I’ve see, but she was good in that). What surprised me was her accent work (I’m not sure how she’d do in a contemporary American film) but mostly how little chemistry she had with either actor. I’ll have to see one of her other films to see if she has chemistry with them- she didn’t really have to have chemistry in Ex Machina, she was supposed to be “other.”
I haven’t seen her in a lot of movies so I have to ask people who doesn’t live in Sweden… has she become a big movie star?
Because I remember here everyone was talking about how she had made it beyond Sweden and so on.
She is isn’t a star yet and won’t become a true star for a while but she is already well known in the industry and after this year she should be someone who’s name is recognized by public since she has so many films coming up.
Okay thanks 🙂
Many of this movies were flops as Seventh Son, U.N.C.L.E., Testament of youth. She hasn’t the star quality, Margot Robbie will be a bigger star than her.
@blancha you only really need that one movie to be a financial success which I think she has with ex machina. She’s getting a ton of critical praise for most everything else. Most of her films are indies anyways so the expectations are smaller. I hope uncle ends up making bank in the end. I want a sequel because I want hammer to be given a excuse to do his accent again and Cavill to just walk around.
@Korra
Even if was an Indie, Testament of youth was a BO disappointment. Indiewire and Hollywood Reporter wrote about this. People don’t seem very interesting in her or in her movies
Meh. I’m honestly not worried for her. She’s doing really well so far and she still has 5 more movies coming out. Ex Machina was a success and she’s one of the most well known from that project. I like her a lot. She picks really interesting movies and has a very diverse filmography. She’s impressive.
@Korra
Hi Alicia! Yes she picks really interesting movie as Seventh Son, Son of gun LOL
“She hasn’t the star quality, Margot Robbie will be a bigger star than her.”
@Blanche,
Margot Robbie is a tall, blonde with voluptuous lips and bedroom eyes. The only acting she had done prior to her 15 minutes playing a sexy blonde bombshell was in Australian soap operas. Then she was promptly given lead roles after lead roles with no proof she can carry a movie. She just has a look that Hollywood knows will attract teenage and young boys to the movies.
Alicia on the other hand is a petite, pretty but adorable pretty, brunette with a better acting history including as a female lead. She’s not a sex kitten or the type of girl other women are in love with like Emma Stone so of course she won’t be as famous as Robbie. Talent is low on the totem pole when it comes to getting movie role. Beauty and desirability is what they consider “star quality
THIS!! Margot gets tons of praise but its always about her looks. Lupita and her both got famous around the same time but Lupita get less movie roles even though she is more talented. Hollywood, smh!
Original T.C., Margot Robbie was one of the leads in the television show Pan Am here in the U.S. before her big film break. I’m not sure how noteworthy that is – I might have been the only person watching that show before its cancelation – but there you go.
My boyfriend and I watched that show too and actually quite liked it. It wasn’t terrible. but like a lot of shows (good and bad) it didn’t make it past the first season. :/
I loved Pan Am, and Robbie was very good in it. I think everyone scoffed at it thinking it was just a piece of pretty fluff trying to cash in on the Mad Men era retro vibe, but I thought it had potential to be so much more. It’s one of those shows I wish had been given a second chance somewhere.
Thanks for adding PamAm kate. So now I can add a stint on a TV show that was cancelled after one season to her resume. How many women get lead roles in big studio movies from that? Even Jennifer Lawrence that everyone says had it easy had to prove herself first with small parts in Indie films then larger Indie roles before she landed the lead in a studio movie.
Alicia has a richer and more diverse resume with a history of critical acclaim. However she won’t have the star look until she starves herself to size zero, gets breast implants, lip injections and bleached her hair blonde.
Original T.C: Margot Robbie may have the traditional Hollywood good looks, but it doesn’t mean she can’t have anything else going for her. In the 2 films of hers I’ve seen I personally thought she established some serious screen presence, and brought additional depth to the thin-ish roles.
It’s unfortunate if Robbie will be typecast as the bombshell, and her looks keep her from getting some of the juicier parts – as I think she could well have the range.
I haven’t seen Vikander in anything so I cannot say if she has range, maybe she does. However, non-Hollywood-looks don’t guarantee acting skills either.
icy: before we start feeling too sorry for Lupita, let’s remember she’s working non-stop and will be in the new Star Wars. Not too shabby, I think.
@Kat
So you haven’t seen Alicia in any movie but have seen Margot Robbie in two thin roles that she brought depth to. Isn’t better to have this type of argument against Alicia when you have actually seen one of her films? Many of us have seen films by both ladies.
Also claiming Lupita is “working steadily” after winning an Oscar but claiming Robbie is deserving of her bigger lead roles after not even a nomination or high critical praise is hilariously blind sighted. Also, after getting a lead Oscar nomination and a history of worthy performs, Mr. chiwetel ejiofor gets the honor of playing a supporting role next to Margot Robbie’s lead role in a studio film. But hey Ejiofor should apparently kiss the ground to be lucky enough to also working steady. Yes, let’s all ignore the obvious and wait for Margot to flash us her Oscar next year.
I think she’s a talented actress. She was very good in Ex Machina and Testament of Youth. But sometimes her replies and persona in interviews come across as grating and smug, and she’s Fassbender’s girlfriend, so she gets hate.
Personally I’m excited to see her in Oscar season. Either she would make some faux pax with her blunt personality and it’ll be a PR disaster or she’ll annoy people with her thirst and ambition. It’ll be entertaining either way. I like her.
she’s gorgeous but I can’t help automatically hating her bc she got with my man Fassbender
Uh-oh, you in danger, girl
The Danish Girl is Working Title & Focus Features.
I highly recommend that if you guys haven’t seen A Royal Affair, please do. I think that it the best film she’s made so far.
agreed. I caught that on Netflix a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Mads Mikkelsen=always gold
I really liked the film too and her acting, but I felt like her looks were very plain/average.
She’s very pretty. I haven’t seen her in anything, so I don’t know if she can act. Harvey is like a truffle pig, but instead of finding mushrooms, he’s always rooting and oinking after The Next It Girl. He is so disgusting. I can’t imagine what it must be like to be “one of Harvey’s girls”.
I agree with everything you said – but I LOVED the truffle pig comment.
Agreed – he is disgusting to look at – and I shudder to think of what the price of admission to becoming one of “Harvey’s” actresses might include. Ugh.
Loved Man From UNCLE but greatly preferred Hammer to Cavill. I guess adorable tough guys are my weakness.
The Weinstein comments showed a lot of …awareness. She’s smart I think.
I loved the movie. It was so much fun. Hammer was great and did a great accent. Every single shot of Cavill was gorgeous. Wow that man is beautiful. It was fun. I liked Alicia in it a lot too, but Debecki wow!
I hope it makes enough to green light a sequel. It’s the most fun I’ve had at a theater in a while.
Wait, Arnie wasn’t the only guy in the film?
Nope. It’s weird I thought that too but I’m guessing that has to do with the title. But Cavill and Armie are both in it and play so well with each other. They have great chemistry.
So she’s definitely getting an Oscar in the next couple of years, no matter if her performance will be good.
She will probably get nominated for The Danish Girl
Her most high profile leading roles are not with the Weinstein Company- Danish Girl and Light Between Oceans are different studios.
She has a small role in Burnt with BCoop which is TWC.
I just saw Ex Machina. She was good in it except I noticed the accent slips in it as well.
For me, Gleeson was the best part of Ex Machina.
Gleeson is so great in all his roles.
Isaac was amazing too
Speaking of Gleeson, he was the best part of Anna Karenina as Levin.
And for people who were wondering if Vikander could actually have chemistry with a costar, i found she had actually it with Gleeson. They made Kitty and Levin far more compelling characters than Knightley and Aaron Taylor Johnson did for Anna and Vronsky.
This and A royal affair are the two films I’ve seen with her and found her good both times. I’ll check her next projects if the story looks appealing.
She is already his newest “project”. All the media hype in recent months around her is his doing.
^This. Also: Gross.
Not because she has six movies not produced/distributed by Weinstein and an Oscar bait not produced by Weinstein?
I don’t know why people keep saying this. Harvey called her because she was ALREADY becoming an IT girl, he didn’t make her, and her big exciting roles have nothing to do with him. People are so extra trying to hook every up and coming star they don’t auto love as being made by some gross man. Not here for it.
How was she an it girl in 2013 when she was cast for Harvey’s Tulip Fever? she was a nobody back then! Harvey doesn’t give lead roles for foreign nobodies just because he has a good heart!, even Vulture pointed out that Harvey told that he put her in Burnt next to Bradley Cooper because he was “enamored of her”, she also has more screentime than more famous actors. Plus, at Cannes Harvey told that Alicia will have “a brilliant future in Hollywood’s biggest league”… how can he be so sure?
Vikander was cast in Tulip Fever with a bunch of other up and coming actor after she campaigned for The Danish Girl, other period piece. Please, link your source for ” she has a brilliant future in Hollywood’s biggest league”. So far he has just talked about her at his Cannes presentation for Tulip Fever. She HAD to say nice things. LOL
Burnt poster: http://www.reellifewithjane.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Burnt-Poster-Bradley-Cooper-1024.jpg
Nice try.
*A Royal Affair
@skedaddle http://m.hitfix.com/awards-campaign/discover-the-next-big-thing-alicia-vikander-of-a-royal-affair-and-anna-karenina
She was scoring blocbuster roles like The man from UNCLE and Seventh Son while making a name in the industry with prestigious movies like A Royal Affair and Anna Karenina, not a nobody for executives and producers.
Yeah, sure. There are tons of foreign actresses doing acclaimed and awarded movies every single year and why is she the only one making it to US so young and, sorry, nothing really special to make people say “Wow, this actress is incredible”? Connections. Weinstein had no problems in calling her “it girl” to a Swedish website in Cannes, he cast her in two movies, he helped her getting roles in others, he brought her to many of his films premieres when she wasn’t involved in any of them…yeah, ALL her roles were deserved, it’s all because of her talent and Anna Karenina, that flopped and only got praises for its tech nods. A Royal Affair? Yeah, one role in a foreign film would give her eight roles in Hollywood, sure.
http://www.svd.se/vikander-vill-fanga-bergmans-styrka
Vikander wasn’t invited like every other actors of his upcoming movies HE BROUGHT HER lol NIcky/Raf you sound crazy.
Liv/Pearlyqueen/Playhouse8, Tell me why Vikander doesn’t appear in the trailer of Burnt and yet she was credited in it? Lily James is in the trailer but is not credited… And explain to me why she has more scenes than people like Uma Thurman, Jamie Dornan (that was cut off), etc? And how she was cast for Tulip Fever in 2013 after she campaigned for The Danish Girl, if she was hired for the latter in 2014, AFTER Redmayne?
And if you can read Swedish, just do a quick Google search and you’ll find the article on Aftonbladet and in other Swedish sites that mentions what Harvey Weinstein said about Vikander’s future in Hollywood. Do you need any more proof after his “enamored by her” comment?, do you think that Vulture invented it and said that in front of Alicia out of nowhere? Who’s crazy now?
@ LOL Nicky/Raf/Olivia/Sam/……. Because Vikander has a bigger small role than Lily Collins? LOL and yet, she’s not in the trailer and she’s not credited in the poster like Thurman and Thompson. Vikander has a cameo like Thurman,Thomson has a bigger role than her. Nice try.
The Swedish website lol says that Harvey called her it girl OMG! like EVERY journalist since the beginning of the year,Harvey predicted a briliant future, but WHEN? When he was showing Tulip Fever to the press at Cannes. Vulture was referencing that moment. It means nothing because he says the same trite shit about everyone. Gyllenhaal is the next oscar winner,Macbeth is the most amazing movie of the year Lol Fact is,he’s supporting Blanchett and Mara. Fact is,Tulip Fever is MIA.
Fact is,Vikander was cast after campaigning for the oscar nominated A ROYAL AFFAIR (Oscars,Berlin festival) and Anna Karenina, after scoring blockbuster roles, not a nobody for executives and producers.

*Lily James
Liv = the only fan that Alicia Vikander has all over the internet. #sad
This is just stupid. Why would Harvey sabotage his own films’ award chances creating media hype for Alicia Vikander who is the lead in a competitor’s film?
Vikander won’t come anywhere near the Oscars. Carey Mulligan will win Best Actress and Rooney Mara will win Best Supporting Actress. Vikander is not a threat for anyone with The Man in Drag, I mean The Danish Drag Queen.
I don’t know if she still lives in Sweden, but honestly, I get depressed just by thinking about the weather. Props to swedish people who can put up with it (this is not wheater shaming, please).
I would love to live somewhere where it’s reasonably cold all the time. It’s almost 40 degrees here and it’s horrible. I hate Summer.
Be very careful what you wish for. Although today, the Scottish Highlands are experiencing temperatures of about 18c, making it one of the three days we’ve had all year that remotely resembles summer. By local standards, I should be grateful. And that IS weather shaming. Or self pity. Probably both.
Me too girl. It pretty much doesn’t get below 80F here between April and October, and May- Sept is always above 90. The last few months have been over 100. And the humidity is absolutely atrocious. 76% today! Yippee! Yes, I’m a weather shamer.
If you’re cold you can always put on more clothes/blankets, but if you’re too hot, there’s only so much you can take off before it comes socially unacceptable.
> If you’re cold you can always put on more clothes/blankets, but if you’re too hot, there’s only so much you can take off before it comes socially unacceptable.
Lol, you gals have NO IDEA what the real cold is. If it is below -20C, it doesn’t matter how many clothes you put on, you are still freezing. You are not just cold, it is actually painful, you are in pain from what the cold is doing to your body.
I am living in Texas now, and I love it. At least I am never in pain.
I used to think this way until the past few summers. I hate humidity (I live in the south) and heat and ugh. I refuse to be anywhere without air conditioning until mid september at the earliest. My favorite time of year is coming up though and I’m so excited for cool weather and changing leaves. and to be basic, Pumpkin everything 🙂
I actually agree with you ladies about cold versus hot; cold is way better and I really wish we could have colder months where I live. However, one week without a sun shining bright and I feel depressed (and I’m not a fan of summer at all).
Cold is not better. The kind of cold that cracks your skin to the point it bleeds, yeah, I’ll take 40 degrees and sun any day.
U.N.C.L.E. was a huge flop. Only $13.2M at BO LMAO
Sad. It’s such a fun movie and really great performances. I hope it makes enough for a sequel.
I doubt. It costed $84M + $34M for ads. Too much
Why is that so funny? I feel bad for Guy and the actors. It’s a very entertaining movie, but why in the world they set the release date so soon after the huge Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation came out, still doing big numbers, so left in its wake, and during Straight Outta of Compton, which was a huge box office hit, I don’t get. Man from U.N.C.L.E. got lost in the shuffle this past weekend and deserved better numbers, in the higher teens.
Hopefully, word of mouth will help it.
The movie has mixed/bad reviews and audience gave a bad Cinemascore. This will not have a good word of mouth
Audience rating is 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not a mixed reaction from paying moviegoers at all.
@Matador, an 80% is still a B- though. That is mixed. It’s significantly higher than the 67% score from critics, but it’s still mediocre. If you got a B- on an essay would you jump for joy? It also has a 7.6/10 on IMDB. The Cinemascore is a B as well. It’s “B”s, “ok”s, “*Kanye shrug and passionless eyes*, It was good” and “eh”s all around. And we are talking about a very small sample size of a pretty small audience too. With a film that’s now clearly a niche one–And I knew that. You’d think studios would’ve known that, kept the budget down, ATTEMPT to insure themselves by getting better known actors, not release it 3 weeks after MI:5, or in mid August, not made the film at all, etc.,–It’s not surprising that paying audiences, who for whatever reason were interested enough to go in the first place, would end up feeling more positive about the movie they gave time and money to see and cared enough to vote online about.
Underperformer sure, but not a huge flop. That needs to be reserved for special cases and people overuse it. For example Chris Hemsworth’s Blackhat. $17 million total worldwide (!!!!!!) on a $70 million budget before advertising. That’s a huge flop!
Save the hyperbola for when it counts.
No, U.N.C.L.E. costed $84m+$34M of ads. This was a flop as every article on Deadline, Variety, Hollywood Reporter said.
Missed my point entirely didn’t you? 😉
I understand your point, but I still must be missing the argument, @Mia4S. So an $120+ million film, that’ll be lucky to recoup a third of it’s costs and will end up losing $70-90 million isn’t a huge flop because you can compare it to Blackhat? Well, it wins with critics and in B.O. totals. But at the end of the day, Blackhat also lost it’s studio something in the $80-90 million range. U.N.C.L.E. could also end up earning more at the B.O. than Mortdecai, but it’s production costs alone were still $30 million higher. It’s not that big a difference and that’s not underperforming to me. (Underperforming might be Rogue Nation versus Ghost Protocol when all is said and done.) U.N.C.L.E. is comparable to the majority of the other big flops this year, (and movies that fail to break even have to have a lot going for them to escape the flop label). Something like Blackhat is an exceptional, special snowflake of a bomb. M.F.U. is not a massive flop with critics, which a significant factor in the “huge flop” reputation that some movies get. So points to U.N.C.L.E for that. But there’s no real comparison between that history-making bomb Blackhat, an R-rated, original film, that got dumped to January (because they knew it was bad), in 2,500 theaters (opposite American Sniper’s history-making wide release), and U.N.C.L.E.’s (unremarkable/ solidly received, yet still couldn’t find it’s audience), PG-13, name property, Guy Ritchie summer movie, released in 23 markets and 5,200 theaters. Which is also about a thousand more locations than Straight Outta Compton had. There’s no way a film with a $90 million budget, (and production budgets are always estimations and always rounded down), with that kind of distribution, can lose this much money and be called anything but a huge flop.
I think it should have been released in the fall….its a perfect date movie and I really enjoyed it but its not fluff summer films most people are looking for right now.
I love Guy Richie films and this movie will do well in the netflix/redbox arena later this year.
It is a flop because that Compton hip-hop/rap (horror) got 56M in the same timeframe. This is where the money went.
I am surprised nobody is discussing how shockingly well Compton did.
Compton made $60M, U.N.C.L.E. only $13.2M. Why you are calling this movie horror? Because it was a success and your loved U.N.C.L.E. a huge flop? Pressed
http://blindgossip.com/?p=73241
I call Compton a horror because I can’t stand rap and hip- hop for completely unacceptable social messages they carry. But obviously I am a tiny tiny minority playing my sad violin in this regard.
I like her and I think she’s both talented (Ex MAchina was amazing and she was adorable in Anna Karenina) and gorgeous. I don’t know why everyone on this site is hating on her?
I really like her. I enjoyed her in uncle and have been wanting to see ex kachina for months now. I don’t think she’s one of Harvey’s girls and the reason she’s everywhere is because she has a ton of movies coming out and is dating fassy.
Isn’t only this site. She’s hated on all internet
It’s her interview answers. I don’t hate her, but her smug attitude seems to be off putting in some instances. It could be a language difference.
That’s sad. I don’t think she’s smug as much as she is just kinda blunt and honest. Either way her brand of smug isn’t Miles Teller brand of smug. She at least has a ton of really good work to back up her smugness. Teller not so much. I like her a lot. She won me over as Gabby and I really hope a sequel happens. Maybe it’s hoping for too much, but serioulsy I had so much fun in Uncle.
I like her a lot.
She is very tanned? A lot of Swedish actresses I see maintain their pale skin. Does she have some southern European ancestry?
I’m Swedish and I tan very easily (most of us really do, similar to “californians”). She does look a bit more exotic though, with her brown eyes and hair – I’m blonde and blue-eyed like most people from here.
It’s cool to know what’s considered exotic in another country. Where I live, blonde and blue-eyed people are almost worshiped (yeah, many tones of racism), but you find a woman like Alicia in every corner. That’s why I’m always surprised when someone says she’s “gorgeous” or something like that.
Her tan comes from a can.
Really?
She has some natural coloring but she enhances it with some type of spray tan/bronzer. Her color fluctuates often.
She has jewish/ashkenazi ancestry like Noomi Rapace
Noomi Rapace has a Spanish father and Romanian descent from her father’s side, not Jewish.
No. She only has two Weinstein films. The MAN from UNCLE was a good film to watch, not memorable though in a year FILLED with spy films. I flopped in the US but I can see that. It will definitely do a lot better in Europe.
I like her. Obviously, I see her getting A LOT of hate online, I’d say that is mainly because of the fact that she is dating the Fassy. Yep. the Fassy. We will see how she will do. I love her style and she seems sweet. Def needs a better rep, other than that. I can’t hate her.
Her former Swedish bf was Fassy’s age and he looked a lot like him…even hotter, I might add. I dont know if he was as well endowded….
Look him up: Gustav Gisseldahl.
No, U.N.C.L.E. is flopping also in Europe
No, she is hated for her interviews not Fassy. Media and people aren’t very interested in this couple
It will be interesting to see how she does once they inevitably break up. Fassy is so not ready to commitment.
I mean, look at some comments here.. It’s blatantly clear.
Meaning?
I saw her in Uncle this weekend, liked the movie, but the two male leads had more chemistry together than Armie and Alicia. My problem with her is that in interviews she seems so smug and thirsty. Tone it down, girl.
I agree—smugness is never a good look on anyone. If fassy was smug, we’d all hate him.
She’s talented, but I think her Oscar comments really did not win her any fans.
If American Vogue puts her on the cover, it means Harvey’s doing her. Or has certain expectations at the very least.
i watched ex machina on sunday and she was excellent. she is so incredibly beautiful – particularly in motion.
Thinking man’s Blake Lively as The New York Times called her LMAO!!!
This is why she isn’t a bigger star. ZERO screen presence.
Yes, she was very boring to me in the films I saw her in. This Pr about her is all Harvey!
I have only seen her in Ex Machina and a little bit in The Fifth Estate (I just couldn’t finish this movie) so it’s hard for me to comment on her talent. I don’t understand though why people call her gorgeous. She’s very pretty but I think also simply plain and forgettable. But if Weinstein took intrest in her nothing matters. She already has an Oscar. He’ll do the same thing as he did with Lawrence.
She is gorgeous, if you like this type.
Read strange things about Weinstein for years. All of it gives me the creeps. Great move to avoid the subject.
I can’t help to think that poor women it treading on quicksand when dealing with Harvey.
Like what exactly?
Andrea – lots of casting couch rumors
Ewwwwwww—–really gross!
Harvey doesn’t take an interest in you out of the goodness of his heart.
Wait doesn’t that mean Cumberbatch??
I’m glad her career is taking off, but I hope that being one of Harvey’s “It” girls, didn’t come at a cost. That guy is so creepy and douche-y.
I saw the Man from UNCLE got bad reviews….is it really worth my time (and money)? The trailer didn’t really appeal to me.
I recommend it as someone who didn’t want to go. It’s a lot of fun, Hammer and Cavill have great chemistry together, there are some incredible/fun set pieces and the time breezes by. Alicia was the weakest part, by far. Just ignore her! 🙂
Mixed reviews (67% on RT), those who love it love it, those who don’t…well. Not really an action movie, more of a period piece with humour. Both guys are terrific and absolutely gorgeous. I’d say worth your time as its a refreshing change from the overdone special effects crap. My guess is it’s the kind of movie that will find an audience over time (the Tumblr set appear to already be hooking on to Armie, God help him 😉 )
@Mia, paying audiences give it a much higher RT rating than critics, 80%. There’s some major disconnect being paying moviegoers and the critics.
@Matador
There almost always is! That’s why I say I think it will find its audience over time and on Bluray. People freak about the first three days box office like they are shareholders. Relax everyone, WB and all the actors will continue to be richer than all of us.
One cute detail? Apparently it’s hugely popular in Russia. Must be nice for them to see a Russian portrayed as an heroic protector instead of the usual gangster/arms dealer.
Unbroken got way below 67 percent, at 51 percent critics, and 71 percent audience compared to the 80 percent audience score for Man from UNCLE, and Unbroken did fantastic at the box office. Non-Stop only got 60/64 and did fantastic at the box office.
MFU’s ratings aren’t bad at all at 67/80.
Look at it this way, Man from UNCLE could NOT possibly be worse than the new F4 reboot. Not possible. At all.
When in doubt wait for DVD.
I think I will take your advice funcakes!
I only want to see it because of Elizabeth Debicki. Loved her in THE GREAT GATSBY and she looks stunning in this. There’s someone with screen presence to spare.
She’s awesome in this!
HW is so gross.
And small point, but where does she say “very” excited as it reads in the headline? Anyhow, good luck to her.
Perhaps one day people will connect the points and realize her ‘relationship’ with Fassbender is another PR move, orchestrated by Harvey Weinstein. They’re not dating. Michael had to do that to make her famous.
Someone else can see this is a PR relationship. So obvious!
Can’t it be both? It is not like nobody would look at Fassbender if he wasn’t an actor.
They get like no publicity though. They go out of of their way to not be photographed together at events. Yeah totally PR when there’s nothing but blurry instagram pics that get no real publicity outside of freakin’ tumblr. Michael gains nothing from it and Alicia shuts down any interview questions about him. I mean it’s not above any celeb couple to use their relationship for PR but come on Weinstein ain’t got shit to do with any of that. Here’s a crazy theory, they may just like spending time together hence all the vacations they go on together. It doesn’t have to be some grand epic romance or some made up orchestration. I don’t know why those are the only two options.
I thought it was a PR relationship until I heard all the time they spent together lately. I am unsure now. We shall see come award season!
Love Elizabeth debicki – Alicia should take a leaf out of her book, debicki’s been in some huge films and worked with big stars, but you don’t see her screaming her thirst. She’s building up her profile slowly. Alicia’s movies have all been disappointments so far, so she’s on thin ice. She’s not a box office draw and in a year of feminism in film, women are not responding well to her. Media isn’t responding well to her, except for the obvious PR written pieces that overhyped her, and now she’s failing to live up to the hype. The Danish girl will likely get a lot of buzz thanks to Eddie and the timely topic, so she’s lucky she still has that to ️maybe get her some visibility.
Ex Machina was a disappointment?
People didn’t watch Ex Machina for her, sorry. This movie had a good Box Office but wasn’t a huge success
I thought she was quite good in Ex Machina … Though she was playing a robot, so I’m not sure that’s the highest praise one could receive.
I’ve seen her in Ex-Machina and I loved her.
As for accents, I apologize if I offend anyone, but why is it always Brits and Americans who are so uptight about accents? English is your native language, I don’t think you can really appreciate just how difficult it is to get nuanced accents and in a foreign language on top of it.
How many people criticizing accents of others can speak without an accent in a single foreign language? And once you’ve done that, try doing a regional dialect in that language.
Cuz it’s her job as an actor to get it right. No excuses.
You should hear American actors trying to speak a different language, just a couple of sentences and they can’t even do that. Isn’t it their job too?
Yes.
Actors have a craft, and getting the accent right is part of that craft. Many actors work with a voice coach before and during a film to make sure that their accent stays accurate, consistent, and on-point throughout the production.
She just bugs me, I can’t help it. When she gave that interview about how she would be going to the Oscars next year, I couldn’t believe how many people on this site were going on and on about how much they loved her honesty and confidence and how refreshing it was. WTF?? Uh, no. She just came across as smug and way too thirsty. I’m assuming she has an extensive PR team working for her, so it’s surprising that nobody coached her on what not to say. Just because films may have all the right elements to be nominated doesn’t mean anything and it’s a looong way until the Oscars roll around. She may have already jinxed herself. Even the most insufferable actors don’t go around proclaiming in interviews that they will definitely be at the Oscars. Her team could possibly score her a presenting gig, but she just needs to slow the hell down. Her desperation to be a big star is obvious, but her arrogance is off putting.
And since I can’t stand her or Henry Cavill or Armie Hammer, sooo glad Man From UNCLE flopped, no matter how entertaining it may be.
She spoke about movies in contention. It bugs me how one person’s word can be twisted.
I’ve noticed that Vikander is not well liked at all as well…most seem to find her smug and arrogant (all that Oscar talk, etc.,) and now, every film she’s in seems to tank hard. I also think that someone handed her a memo because now, in her recent interviews and appearances she is trying super hard to be funny, quirky, etc.,.
However, now everyone is commenting that she’s obviously trying to NOT seem arrogant and they like her even less. Apparently, a lot of critics seem to be less enamored…ie., not as great an actress as they thought. The oncoming Awards Season is going to be a lot different than she imagined, I believe.
????
I do not get why everyone is in such a tizzy over her comments. No doubt her PR team is doing a terrible job, but she simply said “If all goes well she hopes to be supporting 3 movies at the oscars.” And that she was ready to be a bit more known. I don’t get the big deal. Smug? Sure, but it’s not exactly this horrible crime. She’s not cutting anyone else down, nor is she being disrespectful of anyone. She’s being honest and hopeful about her ambitions. God forbid a woman show some confidence right?
Girl works a lot and she has quite a few interesting projects on her filmography. None of them have the built in franchise. She’s been working for almost a decade. Has received praise for a number of projects, she’s just lacking the box office appeal. Ex machina turned out well and hopefully it gets better. I don’t get why it’s so wrong for her to want to be a bit more known. She’s voicing EXACTLY what ever other actor and actress wants. As far as being quirky and special that’s what the audience eats up right now and what every actress is trying to achieve. It’s dumb but I get why they do it.
I like her. I liked her as gabby teller. The role was a bit of a third wheel but if (lol big if) this movie gets a sequel, hopefully they keep her and make it more interesting. Either way the girl is pretty successful. She’s working with a talented and diverse group of actors and directors.
> I don’t get why it’s so wrong for her to want to be a bit more known. She’s voicing EXACTLY what ever other actor and actress wants.
Exactly! I commented on Lupita’s article yesterday. Why is it when Lupita promotes herself, it is cute and professional, but for everybody else it is de trop and famewhoring? There are clearly some favorites here.
@EN Keep in mind that there are Fassy’s fans commenting here. Just look at some replies.lol I agree with you though.
@liv
no dear Liv. People who dislike Vikander aren’t Fassy fans… or you’re like Stewart’s fans who think that every bad post is from Pattinson’s fans? LOL she is hated because people don’t like her personality and how she speaks in interviews (as “I’m so anxious because my success could finish” when she isn’ even famous).
@korra
you’re her fan because you posted in all the page. “but she simply said “If all goes well she hopes to be supporting 3 movies at the oscars.” No, she said that next year she will be at Oscar with 3 movies and she will be famous.
Exactly Desiree. I don’t like her but I’m not a Fassbender fan.
As for her Oscar comments – what if Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman, Kristen Stewart or whoever people on these boards seem to hate (sorry I can’t really think of examples right now) had said things like that, what would everyone’s reaction have been? So many people would’ve taken so much s#!t for that, but she should get a pass?
@Desiree …I don’t think I denied that I became her fan? A lot of my comments are about this film too ya know. I really enjoyed TMFU. I am a fan, except I’m not an idiot about it. What I don’t get is why she’s getting so much hate for those comments. I think google and reading comprehension are your best friend Desiree.
“But next year, the Oscars will be interesting. If all goes well, I’m going to have three films in contention.” She’s not saying she’s going to be but she’s hoping it works out in her favor. Have you never thought about things like that? The ideal scenario? And considering that she’s having a ton of movies coming out this year I also see no issue with her wanting to be a bit more known or expecting it. And yeah I do think her filmography is interesting and varied. It’s full of period pieces and contemporary ones all playing different characters. She’s so smug right? Working continuously on all these projects with such a diverse group of actors and directors. Lol she should just face the fact she’s a failure! Haha working with Ewan Mcgregor.
@Jessica ….girl wtf? I’m really wondering where you guys are coming from. Trust me a large part of why I’m defending her on this board is because I think her comments were utterly harmless and yes she should get a pass. I think it’s the double standard that’s always been seen with women. It’s a stupid reason to dislike her. I would say the same for Stewart, Portman, Mindy Kaling, even Jlaw etc. Stewart gets shat on regularly by people who just want to find a reason to hate her for the tiniest of comments. Portman as well. I will say I’ve been guilty of crapping on Portman for small things, but that didn’t really happen until after her signing that Polanski petition.
Jlaw has gotten a pass by the public at large and by a number of people here for some of her comments which have been in fact offensive. But I still don’t think she should get shat on for any of them. I think Alicia is honest about what she wants and what’s she’s ambitious for. She obviously trusts the material and the people she works with to say that. Should she not want an Oscar? Would that somehow make her more appealing? Even the great Fassdong wanted one at some point and was bitter he didn’t get nominated lol. Where’s the hate on him for that? It’s minimal in comparison to the amount of praise he gets. I think ya’ll two are kinda nuts for hating on her for one interview she did. Like damn. She’s literally saying outright what everyone in her industry thinks and wants for themselves. If ya’ll criticized her acting that would be one thing, but since all you can seem to focus on is how her movies performed and that one interview of course I’m going to defend her because I think the reason for hating her is dumb.
@Korra
Hi Alicia!
Glad I’m not the only one that was not impressed with Vikander in UNCLE. But I definitely agree that Elizabeth Debicki was amazing; and her wardrobe was amaze balls.
Alicia had me perplexed throughout the movie: the accent and also the angles; sometimes she looks so pretty and other times it’s like “her”. Is she 100% Swedish? She is very olive toned. I saw an interview with her and Debicki and Vikander looked browner than me.
The girl is smart. The Danish Girl is not a TWC movie and it’s worth noting that Tulip Fever has zero buzz.
I loved her in Testament of Youth and A Royal Affair. Surprised to hear that her German accent wasn’t good. She works very well with British and American accents. She played the British activist Vera Brittain in Testament of Youth and her accent was perfect.
Tulip Fever has no buzz because the audience HATED IT in test screenings! it’s a failed Oscar-bait and Weinstein has bigger names in Carol and The Hateful Eight to campaign for. But don’t worry, as thirsty as Alicia is, I’m pretty sure that she will make another movie with Harvey since he is so “enamored of her” and she has no Oscar-bait after The Danish Oscar-bait (in which she plays a passive and boring supportive wife), and that girl wants to win an Oscar! she’s only 26 and already thinks that she is overdue… I’m sure that good ol’ Harvey can help her or at least recommend her for his friends, like he did with Tom Hooper – the director of Danish Oscar-bait.
Vikander was cast by the producers of Anna Karenina. They are so friends that he didn’t buy the rights of his last movies,Les Miserables and The Danish Girl lol Nice try.
Don’t worry, Harvey will get her another role soon. He’s not dumb to cast her in another film of his or people will find out she’s a Weinstein girl. So what does he do? He talks to some of his former directors and producers and they cast her. Cianfrance worked with him, Hooper worked with him, producers of Testament of Youth worked for him. Evenher role in Bourne was offered because of her connections with her PR boyfriend. One of the producers is working on A. Creed. Only dumb to believe a Swedish nobody, on her early 20s, would get so many good roles in Hollywood. Just look at Noomi Rapace and Rebecca Ferguson, they all waited years and years before making abroad. AV waited three years.
@ Nicky/Raf lol Cianfrance ended his relationship with Weinstein badly LOL Nice try.
Vikander’s role in The Danish Girl is neither passive nor boring. Perhaps if you’ve read the book or the script you’d be better placed to comment.
@Liv, Les Miserables is a Weinstein Company film just like Tom Hooper’s previous film, The King’s Speech. Tom Hooper was a nobody before Harvey bought him an Oscar and he owes favors to the fat jew. You don’t know shit about the film industry and it’s just trying to deny the obvious Harvey Weinstein connection in your idol’s career. Try harder!
@Beth No. 2/Liv, I read both the book and the script and yes, Vikander’s role is boring, is not a showy role, just a boring wife, no Oscar for her! the best that she can get is a coattail/filler Oscar nomination if Redmayne is acclaimed – the meatiest role is his. Let’s not forget that the transgender community is not supporting a cis actor playing a trans in this movie.
@Nick/Raf/olivia/Sam/….. “It’s just trying”?!! Who knows shit lol about the film industry knows how HW ends his relationships with directors. Fact is,Les miserables is a Studio Canal /Working Title movie.Universal has the rights. Harvey was MIA lol Fact is,The Danish Girl is produced by the British producers of Anna Karenina. When did directors start to matter more than producers? lol Nice try. You don’t know shit about nothing.
I’m not Beth no.2 😉
Go back to the bag forum, Pearlyqueen-liv-london4ever! Your delusional comments belong to that place! Go defend the honour of your Swedish idol over there – where you’re considered a joke and a people mock you all the time!
OMG! Now an Oscar winning director has no power over wich actors should be cast for his movies… only producers have lol.
Waiting for the next stupid excuse…
@Adriane/kate/olivia/sam/raf/alexis /nicky/nutty jj/imdb/….. poster Waiting for the next moniker. LOL #noarguments
@Alexis/Olivia/raf/nicky/sam/nutty imdb/jj/…. lol poster. No more arguments? LoL
Does that mean that Alicia slept with the producers of Anna Karenina, since she worked with them more than once and they like her so much? You’re not helping her!
It’s harsh when you get exposed, isn’t it Liv/Pearlyqueen/Armgad/Playhouse8/Karen/Vikassy/Paula/Whatever is your name today? It’s so sad to make accounts all over the internet just to pretend that your client has more than one fan! 😛
Oh.my.god girl stop talking. I just can’t stand her, can’t help it. She’s not talented nor gifted. Wasn’t she supposed to be the next big thing since Anna Karenina? Nah ain’t gonna happen
I am mesmerised by her. She is SO BEAUTIFUL. I’ve seen her in Ex Machina and Testament of Youth and I thought she did a very good job. She’s very slightly wooden in both parts but that fits the characters (one of them is a robot!) so I can’t really fault her for that. I think she’s going to be huge.
No. She lascks of star quality, she can be famous but not a huge star
Man from Uncle was awesome, thats all I got. That and she’s obnoxious.
I had never heard of her until the rumored romance with Michael Fassbender; cunning way of clawing her way up the totem pole in the industry!
I stopped watching JLaw and Emma Stone bc I cant get the image of those2 Harvey couch who’res (alleged) out of my head.
I can’t wait until this girl disappears and gets replaced by the next “it girl of the moment who will disappear within two years”.
