Chris Brown pleads not guilty

Chris Brown made an appearance at LA county court yesterday around 3:30 local time to enter a not guilty plea in the case against him for brutally beating his girlfriend, Rihanna, in February. He was accompanied by his mother and several bodyguards. Looking somber and wearing a double breasted cardigan over a black shirt and tie, Brown plead not guilty to two separate felony counts of assault and making criminal threats.

Brown is due back in court on April 29 for a “preliminary hearing.” Rihanna’s lawyer, Donald Etra, explained to the press gathered outside the courthouse that a preliminary hearing is delayed “to give all of the parties an opportunity to receive all of the reports pertaining to the case” and that the time delay can also “give… defense counsel and district attorney the opportunity to discuss the case and see if a resolution can be achieved without a preliminary hearing and without a trial.”

Essentially Rihanna’s lawyer confirmed that Brown’s lawyers are trying to work out a plea bargain, presumably to ensure that he doesn’t have to go to jail. Brown faces up to four years and eight months maximum, but it’s doubtful he’ll serve even a fraction of that time.

Lawyers for Brown did not speak to the press gathered outside the courthouse, and TMZ reports that this is most likely due to the fact that they’re still working out a deal with prosecutors.

Etra explained to reporters that Brown entered an initial not guilty plea as expected and that this was a “routine matter.”

“Rihanna’s position in this remains the same,” Extra explained, “namely that she will do everything that the law requires her to do… every step of the court proceedings, and it’s not my role to discuss her personal relationships.”

“My client recognizes that it’s not up to her to decide what kind of deal she wants. That’s up to the district attorney to decide…

“If Rihanna’s input is solicited at that time, she will give it. At this point it’s very premature to speculate as to what her position will be.

“She would be pleased if this were over quickly.”

Etra seems to be confirming that Rihanna hopes a deal will be reached in the case and that it doesn’t proceed to trial. That would definitely be an even bigger media circus and she clearly isn’t comfortable with testifying against her maybe-ex boyfriend. Rihanna was last seen in her native Barbados, where she was photographed partying with the Prime Minister of the island nation. She’s hopefully moved on, and maybe her attacker will finally have to face some stiff consequences for his horrific actions. Maybe the judge will make an example out of him. Paris Hilton had to go to jail for over a month for driving on a suspended license after barely blowing the limit on DUI. Surely Brown can see the inside of a jail cell for a while too.

My brother just got a plea agreement for his THIRD domestic violence charge. HE punched his girlfriend in the face three times, threatened to stab her, and then threatened to harm her son if she went to the police. He will get a 6 month suspended sentence, 2 years probation and will have to attend anger management classes. He had to take these classes the last two times he beat the hell out of a woman – they are working great, eh?

    The system is F*ED.

OMG Mstat-that is so horrible. I’m sorry your family is having to go through that. You’d think with all the leaps and bounds we’ve made for this country that domestic abuse punishment would be more severe. And you’re right CB-we have gotten real strict with DUIs, why not beating someone up???

  3. DD says:

MSat, indeed it is f*ed up. I think what makes the system not work and why the punishment is not so severe is that the victims often don’t want to have their abuser’s prosecuted, like Rihanna and I’m assuming, correct me if I’m wrong, you’re brother’s girlfriend.

On the up side, nice cardigan.

  5. geronimo says:

Sorry you’re going through that, MSat, not to mention your brother’s g/f. It explains your passion and insightful take on this case in past posts, and other stories you’ve covered about domestic abuse situations. Rotten situation all round.

  6. nanster says:

Really sad, MSat – sorry to hear of your family’s troubles.

I hate this person – he needs some jail time to humble his entitled ass.

  7. Celebitchy says:

MSat I’m so sorry that your brother is getting away with that and that your family has to deal with that! What is wrong with the system?!

  8. gg says:

His mother dresses him funny. I realize he probably is proud of having purchased his own tux, but the trousers look dumb with a sweater.

  9. czarina says:

Msat-did you brother’s g/f go to the police and was fully co-operative? I am assuming she did/was as he was on trial (I’m sorry for all your family must be going through).
Maybe your brother’s girlfriend (or, I would hope, ex-girlfriend) could give Rhianna a call and explain the facts of life to her.
I think it’s sad that Rhianna is not willing to stand up for herself. From everything I’ve read, she’s doing the minimum that won’t get her labelled unco-operative, but that’s it. She’s trying hard to do nothing.
If he does get off lightly, it’s like a big, green light to every domestic abuser out there.
That Msat’s brother got off so lightly is a huge injustice. But he is not a celebrity with the world watching. If Brown gets next to nothing, I hope it provokes a huge, angry reaction that might have an impact on the justice system for cases like this.

MSat, SO sorry to hear about your family situation! I’m angry because Rihanna won’t help make an example of him for other girls to follow and take strength from–DV is an epidemic in this country and she could do so much towards raising awareness; if she did more, it could help so many girls/women!
