The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show: who was bland & who was beautiful?

wenn23144699

As I previewed yesterday, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show went down in NYC last night. The show will air next month on network television, because “Christmas,” amirite? While Rihanna, Jourdan Dunn, Doutzen Kroes and many of the big-name models tapped out of this year’s VSFS, it wasn’t an entirely budget affair. The Weeknd, Ellie Goulding and Selena Gomez all performed. Candice Swanepoel, Alessandra Ambrosio, Lily Aldridge, Adriana Lima, Behati Prinsloo, Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid all modeled, so the event had some “names.” Anyway, here are some assorted photos from the VSFS red carpet and the runway. You can see The Weeknd actually breaking a smile up there in the header photo. And here’s Selena Gomez on the red carpet:

Here’s Kendall Jenner on the runway. I just don’t think she has much presence. She can fake it when she’s supposed to be a sullen, emotionless runway model for a real design house, but she doesn’t have the “It Factor” for the VSFS.

Candice Swanepoel’s face is all, “Why am I here?” I do like those boots though.

Here’s another Candice pic. This ensemble is spectacularly awful. Those booties. OMG.

Here’s Behati Prinsloo. ALL OF THIS WAS ATTACHED TO HER.

I’ll give it to Gigi Hadid… she looks like an old-school Victoria’s Secret model.

Lily Aldridge’s boots are a big NOPE. Also: her belly button is the size of a grain of rice.

Here’s Ellie Goulding on the red carpet and on stage. She looks pretty and sort of bland, which totally fits for this year’s show.

I just mentioned on the Giselle thread when talking about models and that certain something how bland Kendall is as a model . I felt she was bland in the photos of the Victoria’s Secret show.

    • Layday says:

I agree. She is super bland. The only thing remotely noteworthy that VS did last night was let Maria Borges rock her natural hair down the runway http://news.yahoo.com/model-just-brought-natural-hair-144904663.html. That’s what they should be focused on because otherwise as far as I could see, everything else was mostly blah, models included. I’m in their target demo and I use to watch the show every year but now I probably won’t even watch. If VS had any sense they would cultivate and celebrate uniqueness among their models, because that might be one of the few things that could breathe interest back into the brand. I couldn’t tell the difference between Martha Hunt and Stella Maxwell if you put a gun to my head, and these are some of their so called new it models lol.

      • Locke Lamora says:

I’ve never heard of her before so I looked her up, and Jesus frickin Christ is she gorgeous. Simply stunning.

      • ctkat1 says:

That’s a good idea- creating a reputation as the only fashion show with a strong commitment to showing different versions of beauty could make VS relevant again, and turn it into a positive thing that models and singers would want to be associated with…
But of course, they’d have to have an actual commitment to different versions of beauty- different races and ethnicities, different body sizes and shapes, etc.

    • LeAnn Stinks says:

I always said that I thought that Kendall resembled Katherine McPhee, except that McPhee has some actual talent. Kendall is so pedestrian, and it is obvious, her modeling career is a case of sheer nepotism.

  2. paolanqar says:

Gigi and Kendall definitely lack the sexy factor that VS models have.
You watch them strut down the runway and you feel..NOTHING!
It’s not their bodies, they have fantastic bodies (even if I think Kendall is just thin, while at least Gigi has some muscle definition, hips and boobs) but they are not convincing enough in trying to sell the sexiness of the VS lingerie.
They’re no Candace, Doutzen or Adriana. They’re in a different league. Just look at Candace, she is effortlessly sexy and has the most aspirational body of them all.
I see Gigi and Kendall as asexual vanilla girls vs. sex appeal oozing creatures.
It doesn’t matter how hard Kris pushes her daughter in our face, she doesn’t have IT.

    • Dawn says:

This. Plus every time Kendall Jenner does the Daisy Duck lip pout I just want to punch her in the arm. I hate that look and just wish it would disappear.

    • Jayna says:

You are so right. You feel nothing look at Kendall in that show. Gigi was a little better.

      • Pandy says:

Kendall is always emotionless/stone face so this show doesn’t work for her. You need some personality in this show. It’s painful to see her trying to look animated lol. Gigi seems a bit better. Why not Kate Upton? Her body is tailor made for this show.

And just WHAT is this show? Bras and panties on prime time? Really???

    • Locke Lamora says:

To me Gigi looks like a perfect VS model.
Candice and Doutzen are beautiful ( Doutzen more so) but so very bland. No charisma or sex appeal. Especially when they speak.

Adriana, Alessandra and Behati are the angels who have “it”.
Magdalena Frackowiak and Jac are the best from the newer models.
      In my oponion, at least.

      • Ange says:

Behati is as plain as an arrowroot biscuit and just as exciting, no way is she one of the greats.

      • knower says:

I agree with @Ange – Behati is the plainest of the VS models. Her body is GORGEOUS, don’t get me wrong, and her face compared to us hideous civilians is probably whooooa. But it always surprised me how plain in the face she is compared to the others. I do love her style thou, it’s very unique and I like that she always is smiling instead of duck-facing.

    • Wren says:

Quite honestly I don’t see the difference. What’s “it”? The only thing I can think of is that one set of models is known primarily for being models while the other is known as reality TV offspring. Maybe I’m a poor judge, but I’ve never really “felt anything” watching fashion shows. The models seem mostly interchangeable to me, except that people like seeing familiar and expected faces.

      • Tifygodess24 says:

@wren – “it” is charisma, personality, someone who is able to light up a room, stands out in a crowd and so forth. While Kendall is pretty and thin , she doesn’t stand out- she doesn’t out shine anyone else, she’s just another pretty face in the crowd. No sizzle. She most likely wouldn’t be walking in this show or most of the other shows she has if it wasn’t for her connections. She takes beautiful pictures though.

      • Wren says:

I guess I don’t really see that with any of the models. But maybe I’d have to see them in motion. In still photos they all look more or less the same.

      • ctkat1 says:

For “it” factor, look at the supermodels of the ’90s- watching people like Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, etc. walk a runway you see the “it,” which is basically just a ton of charisma and sex appeal. When they walked a runway, you wanted to follow them backstage to see what they did.

      • aurelia says:

The It Factor means you CAN NOT take your eyes off them. Think britney at her peak. She was mesmerizing. I can defo take my eyes off Kendall. She just aint got it. Kendall = mesmerizing = lols.

    • sarah says:

Wow I totally disagree about Gigi. Her face is one of the most unique i’ve seen in a long time. I think she stands out naturally, while Kendall has no unique feature to her face to make her that memorable.
Gigi looks like a “super model”, shes insanely tall, isn’t just a basic-blonde, she has a unique face (shape & features), and pulls off VSecret ANd runway quite well.

      • LeAnn Stinks says:

I agree, I think Gigi is quite beautiful, unlike Kendall.

Someone above mentioned Behati having the “it” factor. I disagree with that and do not see that at all. She’s bland in my opinion, but to each their own.

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Probably bc they are like 19. IMO, they haven’t reached that age yet of looking like women. Look like HS teens to me, which I dont find sexy. It’s just creepy more than anything. I think the VSFS models should be more like 25. Let the bodies fully develop for crying out loud.

    • snowflake says:

I disagree, Gigi’s hot, smoking! And not everyone e oozes sex appeal, some girls are cute, like kendall

  3. Alix says:

Women parading in skimpy underwear for national television. Is it really 2015?

    • JudyK says:

2015 and we live in a society where people are so inarticulate that “like” replaces every other word, have nothing better to do than take continual, narcissistic “selfies,” and think a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is something worthy and not something degrading.

    • vanessa says:

it’s just entertainment, and they (the models) can do whatever they want.

      • swack says:

If that’s entertainment then you can have it.

      • vauvert says:

The point the others were making is that women parading in skimpy undies is apparently worthy of a TV show because??? you call it entertainment, but do you see a male equivalent anywhere? No. It’s because boys have to be tough, smart, athletic, etc. but as long as girls are sexay and pretty and showing their T&A, what more can we possibly expect from them?

      • Jib says:

Oh, boy! Now you are going to tell me these women are feminists because they choose to parade around with practically nothing on.

        Gloria Steinem is weeping.

    • Manjit says:

The fact that this show is deemed worthy of being broadcast on TV makes me incredibly sad. I find the concept of this show incredibly smutty and degrading. It’s just a complete wank-fest.

  4. aligoat says:

    This whole thing is ridiculous.

  5. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I will never understand why this cheap, tacky show is a thing. The underwear falls apart in two months and you’ve already thrown away the bra. The construction is terrible. It’s not even sexy.

    • lkaye says:

So true! I never buy their stuff anymore because it is cheap! You can get better quality at Target! VS is for teenagers, I don’t know any adults who shop there. As for Kendall, pretty but no it factor.

    • Willa says:

I still own and wear (wearing today actually) a black velvet bra I bought from Victoria’s Secret in the nineties. Obviously I’ve taking great care of it. But yes, sadly most of their bras and undies are rubbish.

    • Bishg says:

      100 % agree!!
Some models must have been mortified from wearing this tacky, overpriced s**t.
And who would actually wear such garments in real life, except maybe Mariah Carey ?

    • Shambles says:

Good morning ladies! So I really need to go bra shopping– my body has changed a bit and I need to get fitted and update my collection. I was honestly going to go to Victoria’s Secret because I work for Limited Brands and I can get a discount on their stuff. However, on the past couple of VS threads I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about the quality of the bras. In that case, do you guys have any suggestions as to where I should go for quality bras? I just want something solid with a bit of sexiness, and I’m a large B to small C so I don’t need anything special as far as support goes. All suggestions are appreciated. Muah, hope you guys have a great day ❤️

      • Just me and my bobby McGee says:

SOMA!!! Most women wear the wrong size. I thought I was a D. Then I walked into a SOMA and the very scary lady with her measuring tape poked and prodded and measured. Came back with a bra in a DD and made me try it on. OMG. It’s like the heavens opened up and angels started singing. There’s nothing in the world like a bra that fits!

      • Alyce says:

I’m anti Target bras. I’m a 32DD(sometimes a little bigger) so they hardly have any of my size anyway. I love Nordstrom for bra fittings and Nordstrom Rack often carries the same quality bras for a little less. Also, Aerie (it’s the line by American Eagle, but don’t let that dissuade you) actually has pretty descent cheap bras and really great cheap undies. I’m a grown woman but I threw some money their way when I found out they had slightly more realistic, unretouched models, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality! Happy hunting!

      • mp says:

similar sizing to you – my favorite is wacoal (not all lines like b’temptd, but the other lines are good, usually $30-$50 per bra). You can see on macy’s the customer reviews are 4-5 stars! they last great and contour nicely.

      • Bunnybear says:

@Alyce I really like aerie and they’ve been doing quite well as a company! It’s amazing that someone actually thought to market lingerie towards women instead of men.

      • Wren says:

Honestly I’ve gotten some amazing bras at Macy’s. You have to be prepared to try a bunch on, but I’ve come home with comfy yet not “granny” bras from them. Very affordable too. I’m a bit smaller than you though so you may have a different experience.

      • AG-UK says:

        @Shambles
Wow I have 3 close friends working there as well one in Ohio.

      • Detritus says:

I just switched back to VS after many years of ignoring them for being over priced for the quality. What took me back is that they will return/exchange bras that you are unhappy with.
For example I had one that the too of the cup had rolled up after 3 months, they told me to bring in and gave me a credit for it. If they rub funny, break or anything else the one store I go to will take them back. That’s what changed my mind because I love a good return policy. Plus the quality is just as good as my other options here ( la senza or sears)

      • Dizzy says:

Simone Perele. Expensive but worth it

      • Bridget says:

Confession: I tend to wear light support sports bras with the cup inserts to give a little shape. I am just so much more comfortable, and because of the cups I’ve avoided the dreaded uni-boob; plus I don’t work in an office so I don’t have to be formal.

      • Wren says:

@Bridget: Honestly I do too. I have a couple of the VS sports bras that I wear all the time because they’re so damn comfy. They don’t make the exact style anymore (boo!) but the cup inserts and lack of underwire is wonderful. Whenever I put on one of my “real” bras I’m always reminded why I don’t wear them everyday.

      • Pandy says:

Get a fitting from a department store. I’m too large for off the rack (no pun intended) anymore so I have to go to specialty shops now. But once I find a brand and style I like, when I know my size, I can order online for slightly cheaper prices. But a fitting and Warners, WonderBra and all the other brands in a good department store (Macy’s etc) will be better fitting and better lasting than VS.

      • arabella says:

I got a fitting at Nordstroms and wear Natori. Love it!

      • Shambles says:

Thank you guys so much for your replies! I’ve made a little list of everything you’ve said, and I appreciate ya. And Bridget, you are not alone. I spend 90% of my life in yoga clothes, and I absolutely love those sports bras with the built in cups. I could sleep in them.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        @Shambles
I like Fantasie bras and underwear, but I need support, so you might not need to pay that much. I think they are pretty but have good support. They’re expensive because of that, but they last for years.

    • Kitten says:

Totally. It’s also weird that as women, we’re sitting here judging whether other women are sexy enough. I mean, I totally get that it’s a lingerie show (a lingerie show!) and women *should* be sexy but I don’t really want to participate or support something that’s about Women Being Sexy, you know? That concept is not original or unique in any way, shape, or form.

I’ve never been a big VS shopper. It sort of reminds me of Venus or Venus reminds me of VS…except Venus has awesome swimsuits.

    • vauvert says:

I can’t speak to the quality but back in the days when I was a size 6 and living in the US I tried to shop there once. Guess what, if you have a big bust, they don’t (or at last they didn’t) make anything to fit a DD cup. Nada. So after that one experience I switched to shopping for undergarments from actual lingerie shops where they measure you and for you properly, and have never looked back. When you have big boobs it’s even more important to get the right support, otherwise any outfit, no matter how expensive, will look terrible.

In terms of the show, I would never watch anything like it. We expect equal pay and respect, we won’t get it while women are paraded around like cattle.

    • Wren says:

To be fair the regular cotton underpants are pretty good. They come in fun colors and prints and they’re comfy. The frilly, sexy stuff is awful though and falls apart in a minute, provided you want to wear it longer than that because it’s deeply uncomfortable.

The show….. eh. Some of those wings are pretty cool but the rest of it is kinda wtf. Like, I’m going to buy underwear anyway.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I never tried their plain cotton things – that’s good to know. I thought their cotton pjs were nice. I haven’t shopped there for a pretty long time, though. Maybe they have improved. That’s where I got the underwire bra I was wearing at work, and I looked down a saw a wire sticking out of my sweater. Right after coming out of my boss’s office. Thanks, VS.

      • Wren says:

This might be TMI but my mom wears the plain underpants from VS too. She thought my underwear looked much more fun than her granny panties and started buying them for herself.

I buy nightshirts and basic layers from the VS online store and they’re pretty good too. As long as you don’t get too fancy or frilly it’s decent stuff. I also live in the extra long yoga pants because VS is pretty much the only place that sells them for a decent price.

  6. COSquared says:

*nepotism-models fangirls scream their lungs out*. Lily is also bland AF(her sister Ruby is a better model, imo).

  7. OSTONE says:

It’s funny, because for the past 5 years or so, the only people (that I know of) who get excited for this mess are women!! I told my hubby jokingly that we were going to watch it last year, I even tuned in. He fell asleep within 5 minutes! But my timeline on Facebook was full of women “excited” to be watching the show. Is it because we still are looking to reach for perfection and watching these so called “perfect women” is the perfect punishment? I don’t get it!

    • Naddie says:

You answered your own question. Men usually are not into perfect looks. But we chase every detail, every aspect of us and other women. No wonder I take a woman’s compliment about looks more seriously, but that doesn’t make any of this right.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

As someone who at one point did once watch this show and once was quite excited for it. I could not tell you one thing about how the models looked. Who looked good, who was thin, nothing.

I also didn’t give one good diddly about the women’s bodies (tbh the mannequins in VS freak me out, too tall and thin and elongated to the point they don’t seem real).

I liked the show, the music, the fun of it. It wasn’t trying hard to be couture like NYFW which has become soulless and dull, it entirely accepts it’s about prancing in underwear and as a result the models actually smile and enjoy themselves. I liked at one point seeing how they topped the wings each year and different designs.

Once it did becom boring and repetitive I stopped tuning in. I don’t think most men would get hyped for the VS show, they have real porn they can look for if they’re trying to get their jollies.

    • Wren says:

Whenever the VS catalog comes to our house my husband always comments on how skinny and weird the models look. So much for the “perfect woman” ideal.

      • Daria Morgendorffer says:

@Wren, my boyfriend does the same. He actually said, “these women are pretty, but they’re so skinny.”

      • WinnieCoopersMom says:

I see these comments on a man-focused board I lurk sometimes. I will click on some of the threads related to the VS models sometimes and the vast majority of the 150 or so guy comments do not think they are that hot. They basically all agree they are skeletons with boob jobs. So many comments were “You might break her bones,” “girl needs to eat a sandwich” and “no meat on the bones, need something to grab.” It made me feel better to see that’s how guys view them.

      • Naddie says:

But I’m sure these guys would lose their breath if any of these skinny models tried to hook up with them. Plus, men know nothing about beauty, in my humble opinion.

    • A.Key says:

Well I’m not a lesbian, but I like to look at beautiful women.

All of these women are objectively very beautiful, and I like a lot of the ensembles too.

    • Veronica says:

Well, here’s the thing…I work for VS, and while there is a fair share of problematic issues in the types of bodies represented and the whole perfection ideal, there is the fact that lingerie is FUN. It can be sexy. It can be silly. And it’s yours. That’s the “secret” in Victoria’s Secret – that you can wear it under clothes and feel good wearing it and NOBODY KNOWS. I was very surprised when I started working there how many women up and down the body spectrum have a blast shopping there. Some of them are buying for partners, sure, but a lot of them are buying the linerie for themselves. After all, your partner doesn’t care about your hot pink lacy bra – but you do.

So, like…I guess what I’m saying is that by working there, I kind of get the appeal of the show now? Not so much now that it’s overhyped and just throwing any random model with name recognition on it, but the older shows, when ladies like Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell were on there? It wasn’t so much that they were beautiful. It’s because it was one of the few runways where the women were allowed to have PERSONALITIES. They could smile or be sultry or just flirty and silly. Compare that to the haute couture lines where women march down the isles looking like walking hangers, and you can get the appeal of a show where the women was just as important to sell the clothes.

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Full disclosure, I love the show and have watched for the past 2-3 years. I think it’s fun and girly. I first started watching for the musical acts (TS lol), seeing which celebs were in the audience – Adam Levine cracked me up 2 years ago, yelling out loud for Behati lol – and also bc I knew VS played a big role in Gisele, Heidi, and Tyra’s careers and I am always interested in seeing who the newcomers are. Last year I watched it twice, once by myself and second time with my little sister (ages 28 and 22) and we loved it haha. It was fun commenting on the ridiculous outfits, the body language between whoever was on stage and picking our faves..and the backstage commentary on how the wings are constructed, how long the outfits took to create and their value with all the stones and such. I think would be great if they aired NYFW runway shows as well. I just like getting a deeper look inside the industry.

  8. Loopy says:

The era of the SUPER Models truly is gone, to think that Naomi,Tyra,Adriana used to do this show, now it looks budget with a bunch of entitled and connected brats along side models with as much charisma as a wooden chair.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Yes, and the supers would nowadays be told that they’re too old, too fat, too au naturale, and not taking the job seriously enough to model.

Also, is it just Selena wearing blue contacts that keeps throwing me off or does her face look different? I don’t think it looks like her.

      • capepopsie says:

I also noticed something is different about Selena.
        She doesn´t look so childish. . . .

      • V4Real says:

That’s all I came here to say. For once Selena looks like a young lady in her 20’s.
Ellie Gooding could walk right pass me on the street and I wouldn’t recognize her. She doesn’t have a memorable face. The same thing people used to say about Penelope Ann Miller.

      • Pandy says:

I didn’t think it was Selena! She’s done something.

      • ashley says:

YES I was so confused, I actually thought she was one of the models. Could it be the extreme tan?

      • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Yes, it’s like she lost the baby face overnight. What did she have done? Get the fat sucked out of her cheeks like Bristol Palin?

    • Locke Lamora says:

And thank god.it is over. Celebrating women because they are pretty, to the extent the supermodels were celebrated is a horrible thing.

    • Amber says:

Those days are LONG gone though. The original Angels–Stephanie Seymour, Helena Christensen, Daniela Pestova, Karen Mulder, and Tyra Banks–(all had bodies that I’ve never encountered in my life LOL, and) were all top models in their own right before they signed VS contracts. Heidi Klum was VS’s first “super” who had done next to jack squat as a model outside of VS before, during, or after her reign as an Angel. She was their first manufactured supermodel. I adore Adriana Lima, but I would put her (and Kerr, Rosie H-W and MANY others) in this category. I think Lima is fantastically beautiful and she seems like the loveliest person. But she’s not very talented. Nor does she have the most impressive CV given her name and success. Then the body type started to change with Gisele. That led to Ambrosio, Ebanks, Kerr. Very thin. Minimal curves-IF ANY. You combine the two, and VS became like a job program where models (who wouldn’t have a chance otherwise) tried to gain entry into the high fashion world by using VS publicity and if they ever had curves, they got rid of them. Now Doutzen and Swanepoel are almost the last two who ever even had curves and lean more towards “athletic”. It’s a chicken and egg thing. They’ve also tried to pepper in some high fashion models like Chanel Iman, Karlie Kloss and Jac Jagaciak, blah blah… it hasn’t worked. Well, it worked to stall their careers and take the luster off their brands. Now VS’s lost like half their roster including Doutzen, which is not good. (I hope they’re paying Candice the big bucks to keep her.) They finally promoted Lais Ribeiro, but I don’t care. They’ve hired another poor-man’s “Brazilian”, though she’s Portugese, in Sara Sampaio. I have trouble telling Martha Hunt from Stella Maxwell and Elsa Hosk, or from the other bland-y, blonds they’ve let leave like Erin Heatherton and Lindsay Ellingson, (the last one I’m betting most of you’ve never heard of, though she was an Angel for years). The rest all fall into types. They’ll remind you of someone or some type or era. Like Taylor Marie Hill, looks 12 years old, and can also be styled to look like Christensen. VS knows they’re in trouble. That’s why they sprinkle in girls, and I mean that, like Hadid and Jenner, or a Cara Delevingne, or a Kloss. That’s why they gave Aldridge (who I like) the spotlight this year, even though she’s never been one of their top Angels and they barely remember she exists half the time.

      • Daria Morgendorffer says:

” They’ve hired another poor-man’s “Brazilian”, though she’s Portugese, in Sara Sampaio.”

What is that even supposed to mean? So a Portuguese woman is a “poor man’s Brazilian”???

      • Amber says:

No, I mean she looks like Lima. The “Brazilians” are a certain type that VS has hired repeatedly and they really pushed them after Gisele’s success. I thought others would remember the talk in the early aughts of how Lima was a poor man’s, less successful Gisele and then Ambrosio was a poor man’s Lima. And Izabel Goulart, and on and on…

      • Locke Lamora says:

I actually really like Karlie Kloss, Jac Jagaciak, and Magda Frackowiak, they have an interesting look to them, they’re more edgy and not boring like Miranda Kerr or Candice.
I don’t really care if they’re curvy or not because the bodies they show on VS runways are equally unatainable as the ones in high fashion, so who cares if they wear an A cup or a C cup? They’re still very tall and skinny women.
As I said above, I find Candice to be incredibly, incredibly bland. And annoying.

And Doutzen and Lima are not exactly curvy. They have boobs, but don’t have a defined waist, which is perfectly fine, but I wouldn’t call them curvy.

      • Amber says:

I think Lara Stone would’ve been a great get for VS. But many people don’t find her appealing. The point isn’t whether you or I like Kloss or whoever. Rather that they have not caught on. Becoming an Angel completely stalled out Iman’s career. And after the initial controversy about her signing, Kloss got more press for being friends with Swift. I think I’m the first person to even mention her today. No one’s really missing Karlie. You’re also kind of blowing my mind calling Candice bland but admiring Kloss. But different strokes. As far as body types go, it was a huge part of the brand’s image. VS cares a lot. Hence the skinnier models throwing their backs out posing, (pioneered by Gisele), and having two sets of chicken cutlets in their push-up bras. To my eyes there’s a marked difference. It’s relative too. I didn’t mention Lima there. But even now, at her thinnest, she’s curvier than Kendall. Or Ambrosio. They’re all tall and thin. But it’s this http://media.santabanta.com/gallery/global%20celebrities(f)/behati%20prinsloo/behati-prinsloo-52-h.jpg vs this http://media.santabanta.com/gal/Fashion/Victorias-Secret-Fashion-Show-2013/victorias-secret-fashion-show-2013-32.jpg. One person just looks thin and truly doesn’t have much of a defined waist, or a defined anything other than the contouring they did on her boobs. The other is more shapely and looks fitter, to me at least. (And yep, I did grab the least flattering, runway thin, picture of Kroes that I could find). Have I imagined Swanepoel’s enviable hips and Doutzen’s booty all these years? 😀 I would also disagree about how unattainable they both are. I’ve never in my life met a 5ft10 woman with a body like Tyra Banks’. I’ve met plenty of Behati’s and 5ft7 women with bodies like Kerr.

      • Locke Lamora says:

If we’re taking curvy as a body shape, I think Kendall is curvy. She has a pretty defined waist. And you’re right, Doutzen isn’t boxy, I was mistaken.

As for Karlie and Candice – Karlie is very versatile, very tall, she has amazing cheekbones and unusual eyes – to me that is striking.

Candice looks like the typical blonde bombshell we’ve seen in Hollywood movies. That’s boring, plus I don’t find her all that pretty either. She has an amazing body, though.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

I think that VS needs models who can pander their undies to the customers. The customers are normal women and not haute couture customers. The latter would buy more expensive brands anyway.

I think that Angels like Erin Heatherton or even Miranda Kerr very much embodied the cute and healthy pretty fresh girl-next-door who sold VS fashion and looked good on a runway. Doutzen Kroes once embodied that look, too. Behati Prinsloo is a bit more boring than Doutzen. Gisele was nice for contrast and brought some fame through Dicaprio. Adriana Lima once dated Ronaldo, I think. Karolina Kurkova was very famous before VS and she bridged high fashion and pret-a-porter (low fashion á la HM). Claudia Schiffer was curvy and famous and interesting in a Bridget-Bardot-for-high-fashion kind of way.

Earlier VS had very different types: cute and curvy like Erin, Adriana Lima, Miranda Kerr and more edgy ones like Gisele or Ambrosio. Also blondes and brunettes. And different skin tones. Healthy sporty looking girls.

But recently there seems to be a new VS trend: blond, skinny, white, angular, unhealthy and no curves, (Kloss, Kendall, Jac Jagaciak). But High Fashion touches. And some of them rather bad catwalkers (Kendall, Aldridge, Swanepoel). Many of them aren’t really famous like Gisele or Schiffer or Naomi or Heidi Klum. So the customers are less likely to know or identify with these unknown models. Also VS models seem to have gotten younger at least looks-wise which is probably a mistake, too. I don’t think that that will work because that is not even close to the VS customer. The VS customer is a normal women who isn’t catwalk-skinny and who probably likes her curves. She doesn’t want to look like a teenager (Kloss, Kendall, Jagaciak) nor does she want starved (see before). She want adult sexy and cute and playful and healthy and fun. VS has lost that a bit.

  9. lower-case deb says:

i thought Lily was Megan Fox for a second there. so uncanny in my eyes.

  10. Nicolette says:

The Jenner/Kardashian clan is like an out of control virus that has infested everything. There doesn’t seem to be anything anymore that doesn’t have their tentacles reaching into it. Even when reading about the missle launch off the coast of California the other day, lo and behold Khloe was mentioned because she was commenting on what was happening on social media. Lucifer’s Homegirl must have worked overtime to get Kendull onto this runway. She has absolutely no sex appeal which is a crucial element to being a VS model. All in all just looking at these photos VS just doesn’t seem to be what it once was. They used to look sexy and whimsical in a way and this just looks like a mess with a pair of wings slapped on their backs.

    • NeNe says:

      +1. You go girl!!!!!

    • HappyMom says:

No kidding-I knew Western Civilization was on a downswing when Kim showed up on NPR. My in laws were just here-he’s a chemistry professor, she’s an opera loving snob who doesn’t watch television and neither of them have ANY idea of popular culture from the last 25 years-even they know who the Kardashians are. Sigh.

    • Christin says:

To me, this show ‘jumped the shark’ this year. They must be desperate for publicity.

  11. Bishg says:

Notice how much they “covered” Kendall with corsets, sheer and all kinds of layers.
This is because, although stick-thin, she doesn’t have THE body like other supermodels (see Adriana Lima, Doetzen Kroes and Candice) have.
You can see that, even if they were genetically blessed with gorgeous bodies and long legs, they exercise constantly and are not afraid to work up a sweat.
They have spectacular abs and overall muscle definition. A lean, but strong and powerful body.
I am pretty sure anything remotely hard to get / requiring sacrifice is completely beyond Kendall.
She doesn’t strike me as someone with long-term goals and who’s willing do work hard for anything.

    • claire says:

First thing I noticed when I saw the pics yesterday. They had to use a lot of stuff to give the illusion of a curvy body. Also, did anyone see Kendall’s walk? There’s a great vid out there of her flailing her arms around like an idiot and tripping. Makes the headlines of Kendall slaying it and showing everyone she’s a supermodel pretty hilarious. Such manufactured bull.

      • Christin says:

I saw one video of her flapping around, but not tripping. Among the comments – She walked weird and went down the runway like a 5-year-old in the video.

I thought she looked bland in the photos, but the grainy video of her in motion is even worse.

    • Jay says:

Ehh I’m not sure about that. I remember reading an interview with one of the models years ago and she talked about how they’re covered in thick layers of makeup head to toe. The appearance of muscle tone could be easily achieved with makeup.

      • Poisonous Lookalike says:

@Jay: If they did that makeup this year, whoever did Kendull needs to be fired. In that first pic of her up there, her right hand looks like it belongs on a cadaver… especially compared to her forearm.

  12. MG says:

I was scrolling through my People app the other day and there was a picture of a very thin girl in her bra and underwear. I honest to God thought it was going to be a story about eating disorders or something. Nope, it was the VS casting call. What happened to the bodies that used to rule the runway? Hips, butts, boobs…where’d they go??

    • mp says:

Sadly, while you can’t just say someone has an eating disorder just by looking at them, the statistics are that only 0.4% of the population should be naturally “that thin.” the BMI of covergirls/models has gone down, down, down since women got the vote. coincidence?

      • MG says:

That’s an interesting statistic. So many people always use the “naturally thin” line and I just can’t imagine that to always be true. I think of celebs who used to look more like an “average” body type and now are extremely thin. Like Kelly Ripa, Taylor Swift. Not saying they have eating disorders but their current very thin bodies are not “natural.”

      • WinnieCoopersMom says:

A lot of them are like this.. Kate Winslet, Lindsay Lohan, Emma Stone, Anna Ferris, Carrie Underwood..all were very cute and healthy-looking and then lost tons of weight to fit in. Sucks they feel like they have to maintain a certain weight in order to be “good enough.”

  13. InvaderTak says:

That wasn’t even a good show for VS. It was all just lame. What was the theme here? Butterflies? Firefighters? Flamenco? What?

  14. Felice. says:

Selena looks 30 in those pictures.

  15. Allie says:

I wish they would be more diverse in body types for this show. Why are only stick thin women beautiful, Victoria’s Secret? Also, I gag a little every time I hear Kendall and Gigi say this was their dream come true. Please, go to college and make something of yourself that isn’t based on your physical appearance.

  16. Talie says:

The last wave of good models was some time in the early-aughts with Daria, Erin Wasson, Natalia, Natasha Poly, Jessica Miller, Liya, etc. — these models had to thrive without social media.

  17. jolene says:

I saw a vertical photo array of the VS models on the runway, and Kendall was a dim bulb compared to the vibrancy of the others. Gigi had a bit of the vacant stare and it was nice change to see Kendall’s eyes lit up, I really can’t stand that dead eyed thing her Klan perfected.

  18. saywhatwhen says:

Every last Jackman was bland…maybe except one model from Poland and a few from Angola.

There was no stage presence at all. It was a parade of the ordinary. And the lingerie was budget. Was this a show for the men only…just so they could gawk at pretty girls?

  19. NeNe says:

Kendall has such dead eyes! She’s not smizing!!!!

  20. Naddie says:

I wonder if Behati Prinsloo is ok, this costume is cruel. Awesome smile, tho.

  21. Jenna says:

    Selena Gomez looks AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Lila says:

I’m not going to lie- I look forward to this every year. It’s the spectacle. It all has the same glittery, overly choreographed circus feel to it that a Rockettes show does.

Behati is my current favorite angel. She always looks so warm and sunshine-y. I like Allessandra a lot too. She has IT in spades. Was Adriana in the show this year? I didn’t see her. Lily is gorgeous but not memorably like those three.

As great as her body is- and hers is the one I would love to have- I can’t with Gigi. I don’t get her appeal beyond her hot body. I feel the same way about Candice though her face is gorgeous, if bland.

I like Kendall, especially in things like this. She isn’t exotic or stunning but she is a really beautiful girl and that is perfect VS to me.

    • Amy Tennant says:

I’m glad somebody else said something positive about Kendall. Maybe it’s because I don’t generally care about models or fashion shows or whatever (I wouldn’t know 9/10 or more of these models’ names if it weren’t for Celebitchy), but I’m not outraged or appalled at Kendall’s modeling career. If I knew more or cared more, I might be, and certainly I did not WANT to like her at all. She definitely got her foot in the door because of her name, no doubt about it. But I do see something “there,” at least as much as I do most of these women. I find her face to be very striking with her resemblance to Ali MacGraw. OK, sure, she could probably work the face more; I guess she could improve on her “smizing” or whatever. She’s still pretty new at this (and would not have shot up to the level she is so quickly were it not for her connections). However, I can see her having a career on her own merits. I kind of hate to say that, because as I said, I don’t want to like her, To my untrained and uneducated eye, though, she doesn’t seem to be “less than.”

      • FingerBinger says:

I don’t think Kendall is striking. You can go to any mall in america to see girls with similar looks. She is without a doubt attractive.

      • Amy Tennant says:

Yeah, it’s very subjective, I know.

      • Pandy says:

Kendall is a good looking girl/woman. But not interesting enough or tall enough to be a model really. She could do catalogue work.

    • Veronica says:

Behati is one of the better of the new ones. She brings a force of personality to the runway that’s hard to overlook – and I say that as somebody who’s not always impressed with her red carpet style. Adriana and Alessandra are still the stars of the show to me, but I think that’s because so much of it is pure confidence. They’ve been doing this show for years now, eh?

Kendall is an okay model, but I do agree that she wouldn’t be as big without the name recognition behind her. She’s very pretty but not striking, which is actually more important than traditional beauty in modeling.

      • WinnieCoopersMom says:

I said something similar above, but 19/20 (Kendall, Gigi) still looks like a teen. Adriana and Alessandra are both 34, an age where a woman really comes into her looks and confidence. An actual woman, not a little teen look-a-like. You pair that with years of experience, and they will knock it out of the park every time. I wish the minimum age for the VSFS was about 25. Women in their late 20s- late 30s look the best, IMO.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Adriana was what, 19 when she first walked for VS – and she looked amazing. I don’t think age is a factor here.

    • aang says:

I’m no Kardashian fan but I think Kendall is beautiful. The shape of her eyes and her coloring is interesting to me, different from the interchangable blonds. I don’t follow fashion so I have no clue about her ability as a model.

      • Amy Tennant says:

I feel the same way. I think she’s fine, but what do I know? I know so little I may not have the right to an opinion.

  23. QQ says:

Excepting The Weeknd this show looks like a Charisma Black Hole,, can’t bother to comment on anyone specific None of this will do For Leonardo Di Caprio and assorted Douchebros of Hollywood, Tsk Tsk, also That lady in the first pic looks like an elongated tall adult version of Selena Gomez, How Sway??? ( or wait Is it Selena? are those Blue contacts? is that A model?? Halp! this is frying my brain)

Also Sorry But ellie Goulding as much as I like her music sometimes looks like a Pastiche of severeal People at once, Young Voice, Body of a young adult fit and toned, and Hair that was slept one all week Face of a Tired haggard mom of 3 on her way to a milk run

    • Amy Tennant says:

I thought she might have been Selena too.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Ellie Goulding looked like Kristin Cavalarri so hard I had to scroll back up.

There’s a few comments here and there from people asking why or how anyone could be excited about this but when I look at the above pics my little fashion heart breaths a sad sigh. Everything looks so budget and basic when not just two years ago Rihanna fucking killed it with her style, sex appeal, and confidence. I’m looking at a celebrity list that includes: stale toast, a pineapple, and a frozen stick of butter.

Old school Vickie’s used to be awesome. Some MEAN walks and a lot of confidence and fun music. Also…poor Selena should never be in front of a crowd of tall suoermodels.

      • QQ says:

BWAHAHAHAH not Not Pinneapple and frozen Stick of Butter!!… Oh yeah i do See a Budget Cavallari Vibe if I squint… no but for seriously WHAT is the situation with second Pic? Selena with Something done to her face and contacts or extensive photoshop? Model?? what cause Selena Gomez is NOT that Lenghty nor that slim in the face?

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

I’m still trying to figure it out. I didn’t realize she’d be at this show so seeing her with models who are 5’10 to 6+ and looking slightly comparable is puzzling.

    • Locke Lamora says:

The Weeknd is a misogynistic asshole. It’s not charisma, it’s the eau de douche about him.
I don’t like Ellie’s voice, it’s too sickly sweet, but at least she’s not as annoying as Rihanna.

  24. Daria Morgendorffer says:

I didn’t watch this and I never do, but I admit I was on the fence about Kendall and Gigi being hailed as “the new supermodels” and all that. After seeing video footage of both of them walking in the show, Gigi is incredible and I believe she’s going to have a career for a long time. I had no idea how great her body was. Kendall, on the other hand, brings nothing special and is obviously only a fad. My personal opinion is that people are putting her in their shows because she generates attention. I saw a video of her walking in that red and blue thing with the cape and at the end, she was supposed to switch it all around before she turned and walked away, and she looked so dead-eyed and personality-less. A friend of mine said a while ago that despite the fact that Kendall is model-esque and pretty, she is no better than a second tier model. Just an average looking girl with a very tall, thin, long frame. I don’t think she deserves the hype she is receiving.

  25. CrackFox says:

So are we not going to talk about WHY Jourdan and Rihanna were not there?

  26. manta says:

Apart from marketing skills, I don’t get what makes this brand so special. I was never blown away by their designs. But I thought maybe pictures didn’t do justice to the products, so I checked one of their stores a couple of years ago. Nothing exceptional in the quality, the finish, the material.

There’s no way I’d trade Simone Pérèle, Aubade or Lise Charmel for any of the pieces these ladies are showing here.

  27. tabasco says:

I saw some red carpet after-party pics of Candice and now these and her face looks….different somehow to me. Maybe it’s just the Over It expression or load of makeup for this event, but I’m putting her on Did She Have Work Done Watch.

  28. Alana says:

Candice Swanwhatever is so freakin hot. I can’t hate… she is smoking. I thought VS models have to have at least some boobage so idk why Kendall was there anyway guess good for variety. i don’t watch the show anymore I find it pointless because it just reminds me the unrealistic female body expectations that still in 2015 are propagated
As for men , No they probably don’t care because men can watch porn online with possibly women little juicier ( VS show was probably hot for our dads that didn’t use internet then lol)

  29. tabasco says:

The blondes are barely distinguishable from each other. Also, I thought it was (sort of) interesting that Kendall was given no form of wings. They gave Gigi at least some baby wings.

  30. truthSF says:

These chicks look hungry. I would love to share my sandwich with them. 😀

  31. lisatorner says:

As someone who is not from America, I assumed modelling for Victoria’s Secret would be a step on the way to becoming a model for high-end designers.

But it seems the reverse is true- like high-end, Parisian couture is just a step on the way to the real goal of working for a tween mall underwear brand?

I think Gigi and Kendall both look like models well enough but they were both “born on third base” as they say.

When you are born to wealthy attractive connected parents who aggressively work towards your success I think you have a lot more chances than the average American teen.

    • aang says:

Who are Gigi’s parents? I know nothing of any of these people.

      • Kori says:

Gigi’s mom is Yolanda Foster of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and her father is super-wealthy Mohammad Haddid (who appeared as a semi-regular on RHOBH before his ex was cast–they’re very friendly). Yolanda is married to David Foster now. Are you ready for the near-incestuous ties? LOL David Foster was married to Linda Thompson who was married to Bruce (now Caitlyn) Jenner and the mother of Brody, etc…Kendall’s half-brothers. Yolanda’s castmate Kyle Richards is good friends with Kris Jenner and their mutual friend (Kyle’s bestie) Faye Resnick often guests on the show. Gigi also had a long-term relationship with Cody Simpson (who was recently spotted hanging with Selena Gomez) and just broke up with Joe Jonas who used to date Demi Lovato, Selena’s ex-bff. I’m really ashamed I know all this. LOL Gigi appeared a handful of times on RHOBH and she came off as a very sweet, somewhat shy girl who was very into volleyball. Her sister Bella Hadid is regarded as having a more high-fashion look while Gigi is seen as more commercial–which is why I think VS is a good fit for her.

      • Jay says:

Her mom is Yolanda Foster, a successful former model. Her dad is worth 200 millions dollars.

      • swack says:

They are on one of the Real Housewives show – don’t know which as I don’t watch and only know because of gossip sites. From what has been said, Gigi has been modeling from about 4 yrs old on.

      • lisatorner says:

        As mentioned above-
Gigi’s parents are Yolanda Foster and Mohammed Hadid. Yolanda was a model and is now on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Mohammed is a wealthy real estate mogul in Beverly Hills.

Yolanda is now married to David Foster (hence her last name) who used to be married to Linda Thompson who used to be married to Bruce Jenner and is the mother of Brandon and Brody Jenner.

Yolanda’s on-going ‘story’ on RHoBH is that she has chronic Lyme disease which has vague symptoms and no cure, and she travels around the world trying to raise awareness and find a cure. Some people believe she has Munchausen’s Syndrome and is not ill but addicted to the attention being ill provides. Who knows.

      • Nursery says:

I don’t mean this as an insult, but just as an objective observation: Bella Hadid does not qualify as a model. She’s like Stephen Baldwin’s daughter: booked only for her name. Bella doesn’t have the right build or height to be ANY kind of model. Not an insult. Just a fact.

  32. tabasco says:

It’s like Slutoween on steroids. Themed outfits based on lingerie. Sexy firefighter, sexy hippie, sexy butterfly, sexy snow bunny. I’m not calling the models sluts. I’m saying the outfits being based around random characters/professions is weird and looks like what the girls who went as Playboy bunnies to the Halloween party I was at would wear for Halloween if they had someone to make these getups for them.

  33. Lovelym09 says:

Kendall and Gigi…fine example all you need is family connections and a huge social media following to be a “supermodel”. I’m sorry but Kendall looks out of place in this show

  34. deborah says:

They all look horrid, and the clothes are worse. I never shop at VS, and I’d love it if celebitchy gave less coverage to this monstrosity of a show in the future.

  35. BadAssCompass says:

honestly, the only fine pair of legs I see here are Ellie Goulding’s :/
Selena looks all grown up and that’s the most interesting thing about this event.

  36. Velvet Elvis says:

I honestly can’t stand the Kardashians and what they represent, but to me Kendall looked gorgeous and the most vibrant I’ve ever seen her. People here love to mean girl her I think just because she is a Kardashian. I will take her over Behati Prinsloo or Karlie Kloss any day, neither of whom I believe to be sexy or even very pretty or remarkable.

  37. TOPgirl says:

Honestly…VS is losing their hype. Kendell and that other chic just don’t cut it to be a VS model. They don’t have that exotic beauty factor like some of the other girls do. And they look so immature too. Eh!

  38. Kate says:

Can someone please explain to me why Behati Prinsloo continues to be a thing? She always looks bland and unwashed to me.

  39. shewolf says:

I dont want to defend a Kardashian twice in one day for risk of realigning the earths polarity and setting off a catastrophe but… Kendall is absolutely beautiful. Shes also very young and privileged so I think thats why she doesnt have the “sexy” factor… she’s all like “yay Im a VS model!”

  40. Caz says:

Kendall & Gigi are only there to get VS to the teen market. Teens’ concept of sexy/beautiful is usually not the same as everyone else’s. This is just very very expensive PR for a low cost tacky underwear brand. Lol at the marketing of the Angels as being something worthwhile.

  41. Bread and Circuses says:

Well, they’ve successfully hidden their product in plain sight. The models are all wearing underwear, and yet I barely registered its existence past all the spectacle.

  42. coffeeisgood says:

Kendall fits in just fine with all the other bland models. VS lost the wow factor with the models they hire now a days. They are all white and super skinny, there is no diversity or curvy models anymore. Also the costumes got a lot less sexy and more catered to teens it feels like.

  43. Learned One says:

Old school VS? I’d give a pretty penny to watch Daniela Pestova, Laetitia Casta and Frederique strut down the runway instead.

  44. Shasta says:

She almost escapes the bland when she smiles. Almost.

  45. Sarah01 says:

I’m not into VS show at all, it’s just pretty girls strutting in over the top underwear. To me it’s like those silly pageants. I don’t shop at VS. I despise the Kardashian clan same as British royals ( rarely comment on their threads). However Kendall is a very pretty girl, she is not plain looking at all. If Kate moss could make a career out of her face and body then so can Kendall, who I find despite her being a Kardashian, much more prettier than Kate.

    • Nursery says:

Kate Moss had this waif thing. Kendall is C-grade and would not get bookings if it weren’t for her family.

  46. Nursery says:

I hate VS shows. The outfits are always just so incredibly hideous. Ugly, cheap-looking underwear and the poor models trying so hard to have “it,” like Derek Zoolander. Poor things!

The million-dollar pay cheques can’t compensate for the pain of being a grown woman and having to wear angels wings and other stuff more suited to garish transgender shows in Pattaya, which at least make sense and are authentic to what they are! VS shows are overblown money games involving ugly, ugly lingerie. That is all.

  47. Denise says:

Kendall just has no shine. How could she? That is something that radiates from within and her and her sisters were not allowed to be individuals. There is something in Gigi, however. She may not have that commanding supermodel presence, but she radiates a warmth and that is something. Also her body is great for this brand. Skinny girls in lingerie……doesn’t work.
