Note: I’m splitting up today’s Golden Globe nominations into two posts, one for the TV nominations and one for the film nominations. These are the TV nominations.
Unlike the SAGs, which recognized the same-old, same-old people with only a couple of new names, the Globes actually recognized a slew of new people and shows. I know CB will be happy about the love for Liev Schreiber. I’m happy about Idris Elba, everything for Fargo (especially Kiki Dunst and Patrick Wilson), and mostly, I just love that the Globes recognized some new shows. While Game of Thrones got nominated for drama, it’s depressing to see that Peter Dinklage didn’t get nominated. No actor from GoT got nominated!! Which is insane.

Yayyyy Liev for Ray Donovan. Such a great season for him. Yayyy Viola!!!!
Meh. I watched the first episode of the first season and gave up on it. I don’t find toxic sociopaths interesting or edgy.
Yes for the Narcos nominations! Wagner Moura is so good. Maura Tierney is fabulous on The Affair too. I’m fine with more new and less every award goes to GoT, Mad Men or Modern Family, really.
My thoughts exactly!!
+ 1. He was fantastic as Pablo.
YES! I love Narcos. Also, Silicon Valley is really really funny.
Yesss! Happy about all the Narcos fans on this site!!
I am SO HAPPY about the Best Actor category! Glad “Narcos” and “Mr. Robot” is getting attention. I suspect Jon Hamm stole Dinklage’s nomination, which is ashame because Hamms nomination is due to respect (of the final season of Mad Men) rather than current acting work.. I love Hamm but gah, that’s a tough one.
Dink lage is Supporting Actor, so no.
@BRIDGET
True! My bad, was thinking he was lead, but I guess GoT is ensemble work.. not sure who stole his nomination then, Sup Actor category looks condensed.
Really happy about Mozart too! Gael GB is such a dark horse, love him
So thrilled for the Narcos nominations. One of the best shows I’ve seen in years.
Also thilled with noms for Veep and Show Me a Hero. Both, well deserved.
And unlike SAG, the Golden Globes actually recognize the work of minority actors. I actually prefer them over Oscars and SAG because they are willing to embrace new shows/actors.
LOVE Narcos! It’s so good I binge watched it in two days (I know)
So happy for Idris as always & for Gabriel Garcia Bernal(!), & my queen Viola Davis who is terrific in HTGAWM. I’m excited to watch the Golden Globes now
Eh, I’m not so enthusiastic about Moura’s nomination. His Colombian accent is terrible to the point I can’t focus on anything else. But I guess American audiences wouldn’t quite grasp that. I wish I could watch the show with American ears to truly appreciate the other aspects of his acting.
I agree about his accent, its awful! I’ve seen him in other things and he’s been good but they should have never hired him to play Pablo, that said I am Colombian and from Medellin and I think Narcos just got it wrong on every level. Everything is so wrongly presented, but his accent and the faces he makes are what completely put me off the show.
Outlander is terrible and I totally side-eye women who go crazy over it. #notsorry
No need to be sorry. Im a woman who looooved the books and despise the show. Its bad, theres no excuse about it. And while I could have agreed with some of the acting nominations from the show (like for Tobias), there is just no explanation for Balfe’s nomination. Shes a lovely charming woman but she is bloody awful as an actress. Terrible posture, no voice control, extremely wooden with limited facial expressions throughout, not to mention the chin acting. How on earth did Starz/Sony get her a nomination? Yikesss!
I’m happy that Tobias got the nom–totally deserved–but yes don’t see why Balfe is in there.
Very happy for Tobias Menzies, he does such consistent work it’s lovely to see him recognised.
Outlander used to be my guilty pleasure watch, but about halfway through the first season I completely lost track of what was going on. Agree that Balfe should not be there.
Side note – did The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt get snubbed, or did it not make this years cut off date? Because I will start a damn riot if Kimmy got shut out.
Tobias Menzies is the only one who really deserved this nomination. I wouldn’t give it to anybody else from the show.
OK, there were some other actors and actresses in minor roles who were really good, but their roles were too small to get them recognition.
Outlander is a mess. I watched most of the first season and that was largely due to Tobias Menzies terrific performance. I am glad to see he was nominated. I am going to say that Caitronia (whose performance seemed to get worse as the season went on) was nominated on their best episode: Wentworth Prison where her and Menzies character goes to head to head. I honestly would put that episode as one of the best of the television season.
Wagner Moura is simply wonderful as Pablo and I am glad he was recognized as well.
GoT season 5 was seriously weak. I think their Emmy win was a mea culpa for not recognizing them in the seasons they deserved it. And really the only actor/actress from season 5 who was award worthy was Lena Headley. Dinklage simply did not have enough to do in season 5 and definitely did not deserve an Emmy for that season either.
Sideeye away! In fact, you might as well roll your eyes out of their sockets and down the hall because I LOVE Outlander. I have loved the books for years and was thrilled they made it into a series.
I think all of the performances have been fantastic. Tobias Menzes deserves this nomination and I think Sam Heughan has done a wonderful job with the character of James Fraser and should have gotten nominated as well.
#notsorryeither
AGREED! Love Outlander. Struggled to get into it, and yes its a bit campy. But, by and large the reviews have applauded the acting for all 3 “leads” and George Martin even said after Emmy noms that HE was mad Outlander was snubbed.
Count me in, I love it too. I was also a fan of the books so maybe I’m a bit biased.
So pleased for Tobias Menzies – he’s amazing in it.
I thought Heughan got better as the season went on, and by the end he was quite good. But that scene where they had the fight by the roadside, he was awful in that. He’s physically great for the role, but he’s not the world’s best actor. Tobias Menzies though, consistently excellent in everything he does.
I like the show. It’s really cheesy quite often and the script had its weaknesses, but I enjoyed watching it.
The fans are an embarrassment though.
Peter Dinklage did not deserve a nomination (much less an Emmy) for season 5 of GoT, but Lena HEadey (Cersei Lannister) certainly did. I can’t believe she got snubbed!
Yep, don’t get me wrong I love Peter but people act like he should get a nom every year.
Lena most definetely got snubbed.. Ding ding *shame* ding ding..
agreed. i mean peter’s great, but what did he even do in season 5? he seems to be an awards favourite though, so he’s nominated no matter what.
I love Peter Dinklage but his accent work on GoT is so horrendous, its distracting. I’ve never understood his wins beyond the fact that he is a really likeable person with insane gravitas.
You don’t seem to get that Peter Dinklage has incredible charisma — if he were 6′ tall he’d be a very successful movie star.
He has dignity and a sense of humor and I can only imagine what his career would be like if there were no bias in the world.
Completely agree. Lena should have had Joanne Froggatt’s spot.
I agree!
I ADORE Downton Abbey, but Joanne Froggart had NO spectacular storyline that showcased any exceptional acting AT ALL. Now, Dame Maggie Smith is another story, she is given many fantastic one liners.. Lena Headey had a great year on GoT too – far more deserving.
I should have turned my eyes down and saw this thread on PD and LH…I totally agree with all that is here! I
Fargo should win everything.
Just binged on season 1. Can’t wait to start on season 2, but also a little scared! Holy sh!t.
They could have filled the acting categories with Fargo people and I wouldn’t have minded.
Seriously, where’s Jean Smart? Bokeem Woodbine? The whole cast was so damn good I can’t believe there are so few nominations.
Agreed – happy with the nominations Fargo got, but can’t believe some of the ones that were missing (especially Jean Smart!)
Agreed – excellent show with an incredible cast. I’d rather have seen several others get nominated before Patrick Wilson though. I haven’t seen the most recent episode, but I didn’t think his role was as interesting as some of the others. Jeffrey Donovan should have gotten it for the cabin episode alone.
Yep. Bit disappointed not to see more of the cast nominated, though Dunst and Wilson have been phenomenal. Jesse Plemons should definetely have been nominated.
It had better get all the nominations at the Emmys! I agree Jeffrey Donovan was marvelous as Dodd. What a character to play! Bokeem Woodbine is incredible, Jesse Plemons….and Hanzee! And Bear! I could go on an on. I am obsessed with this show!
Its not finished yet, its possible it didn’t qualify because the season is still ongoing? If not, that is pure BS. Best show on TV and the acting is outstanding.
Yay for Eva Green. Her work in Penny Dreadful is on a whole other level.
Thank feck Downton has ended so now we can stop seeing them pop up in nominations. Anna had feck all to do this season apart from wander around looking sad, worried and moaning.
(I LOATHE her and Bates)
Me too, so boring and wooden.
Downton never should have gotten all the awards and nominations it did, except for Maggie Smith and the costumes and sets. It’s always been a mediocre show that people have confused for greatness, IMO.
I saw it got some SAG nominations, but I’m glad to see it missing here and will be happy when it’s done and not clogging up the categories anymore.
Eva Green 4eva!
Penny Dreadful is SO GOOD! Too scary for me, but SO GOOD!
Eva Green for all the things!
Rami Malek is everything. He plays the socially awkward Elliot perfectly. I’ve watched Mr. Robot twice now and can’t wait for the second season. Being in the tech industry, they’re actually attempting to keep things grounded in reality and it makes me so effin’ happy.
Yes love that show!
He’s always been a great actor and this show underscores it
Those eyes give me the feels, he is amazing
Yay for Mr Robot and Rami Malek and Christian Slater! Love them and love the show!
Also honking for Wolf Hall and Damian Lewis 🙂
Just give Mr. Robot all the awards.
I was just going to say the same thing! Mr. Robot should take them all!
Wow no affair for best drama?!
That show has turned into high-brow, high-production soap opera. It doesn’t deserve it.
frivolity, I agree.
I’m enjoying it, but agree it’s probably not best drama worthy. Maura is excellent though, I’m glad she was recognized.
@lucy2
lol. I’m enjoying it too, but I recognize what it is. And I agree, Maura is excellent.
First season was AMAZING.
I’m really shocked, no Orphan Black??
I see they nominated some streaming show, hopefully they are seeing the light that some of the best shows are not on TV . Yay for Master of None, Narcos
Hooray for all the Wolf Hall love… and Luther too!
Thrilled for Causal, really enjoyed it and Idris!!! Love love love Idris. Also happy for Aziz and Regina!!
I’m really confused about Leftovers was it not eligible? I don’t have HBO but I keep hearing how amazing it is so I’m shocked how it isn’t getting nominated, from what I’ve read it’s the best show to come out since breaking bad.
I don’t know whether or not Leftovers was eligible, but it only just finished its second season last week, so might have been too late for these noms. Maybe next year? Though by that time, it might feel like a distant memory.
Few new and interesting nominations – I like it!
Wolf Hall! Wolf Hall! Wolf Hall! CROQUEMBOUCHE
I hope Mark Rylance wins EVERYTHING. So, so good.
No Hannibal? Really?
it was cancelled because it was pretty awful and fanwanky it’s not exactly surprising it got no recognition…
Hannibal was excellent its first and second season – it should have been nominated then. The third season was pretty terrible though.
i liked the first season very much, but it started to go down the drain in season 2 imo. like i said… too much fanwank. like, they started to write the show based on what the fans on tumblr wanted to see, it was ridiculous.
why is downton abbey still getting nominations, nothing about it has been any award worthy in seasons, not even joanne froggatt.
no surprise on maura tierney, she’s wonderful on the affair. and silicon valley is great, too.
Downton is a period-piece soap opera with high production value. Never understood the hype. The Affair is much the same (minus the period part), but Maura is great and she deserves the nom.
As for Silicon Valley – it is hard not to like anything that Mike Judge creates. 🙂
I was happy and surprised to see Jamie Lee Curtis get a nom for Scream Queens. I love that show. I mean, I don’t think she’s necessarily the funniest on the show, but Im happy nonetheless.
I love that show too! It’s not for everyone but I think it’s hilarious. JLC deserves the nom.
Decent nominations. Will watch this year.
Sorry Maura but Regina is going to take it. Amazeballs. And with the way she killed it on The Leftovers, next year as well.
I think Maura could give her a run for her money and it’s a strong category but, yes, I think Regina will take it too. And her work on the Leftovers is phenomenal, so I do hope she’s in the mix next year as well.
I’m kinda surprised this season of Leftovers didn’t get any GG love? Or was it too late to be eligible?
Regina is an extraordinarily good actress. It killed me she never got any awards for Southland, so I’m thrilled she’s getting recognition for other things now. I will probably go back and watch both shows just to see her work.
I think The Leftovers was on too late to be eligible. I don’t know when the GG cut off is, but the Leftovers debuted in October, correct?
Regina King was stunning this season in The Leftovers…she’s got to be a shoo-in nod next year. I hope the GG remember!
Good news, Leftovers renewed for one more season, so presumably we’ll see more of Regina’s great work!
I’d be happier with more Fargo.
How could the acting be overlooked? Kristien & Bokeem Woodbine definitely deserve noms.
I love, love, love American Horror Story this year! It’s the best season and I believe Gaga deserves the nom.
Evan Peters was snubbed! He’s amazing on AHS!!!
You are right! He’s amazing this season. So is Mare Winningham.
Finally. Julianna Margulies and Claire Danes no more! It’s about time people realized how sucky those two really are.
I wouldn’t say they’re sucky (well, maybe as human beings), but agree their performances are no longer fresh or particularly interesting.
I’m a little baffled actually how in the world American Horror Story and Gaga got nominated. The former has become a blustering bloodbath that could use a fresh, less kink oriented imagination for horror. And Gaga? Until Valentino showed up, she was a dead eyed mannequin at best. Swanning around in deluxe costumes or doing borderline soft porn does not add up to a great performance. Frankly, the whole season has been a melodramatic mess.
Agree on Gaga. She was OK until they started giving her a lot to do, and then oy.
…and Kirsten Dundst not being nominated for Fargo is a shame. she is awesome in Fargo
There are many other actors in AHS this season that deserved nomination more than those that actually got it. Just one example: Denis O’Hare.
Lady gaga?! seriously?! she can’t act her way out of the bathroom!
Apparently talking really slowly in a cheesy accent and bugging your eyes out is award worthy… Oh and getting naked, getting naked helps a lot
No Homeland or The Affair? Noooooo.
I must say I’m surprised about Homeland too. Its fourth season was by far its best imo, and I still can’t believe Mandy Patinkin hasn’t gotten the nom. I agree with the points upthread about The Affair though. Other than Maura Tierney’s performance, pretty soap opera-y.
THANK YOU! My thoughts exactly. Season 4 was brilliant. Mandy needs a nom! And Rupert Friend! God I love him. So sexy.
What about the knick? Best show on television! !
Very nice to see this kind of diversity in the Television categories, the Film categories on the other hand…
Americans may only know Wagner Moura for his role in Narcos but here in Brazil he has done some solid, amazing projects for years, he’s THE SH*T! I’m really happy he’s getting this super deserved recognition from the international public now as well!
I am pumped about Eva Green and Regina King. They slay all of the time.
So happy for Gael García Bernal! Mozart in the Jungle is an amazing show!!!
Still funny that Downton Abbey get nominated for the big awards in the US, its a soap…
No Toby Stephens? No Black Sails? No Toby Stephens!!!????
Easily Starz most compelling show, headed up by an extraordinary actor.
No horse in this race for me.http://ih0.redbubble.net/image.52306935.4862/fc,550×550,white.u2.jpg
Love Toby Stephens. Clearly Maggie Smith passed on the gene for good acting.
I’m just happy that everyone has moved past Modern Family..the fact that I dont have to hear any of that insufferable nonsense come out of Sofia Vargara on stage or the red carpet, fills me with so much joy.
Rami Malek, “Mr. Robot” – OH THE FEELS!
Jessica Jones should have been a last minute addition to this list. After binge watching the show, I see why it burst on to the scene to raving reviews. It’s great to see a strong, complicated female lead character from Marvel.
Was it released out of time? I’d totally kick Balfe out in favor of Kristen Ritter. I haven’t watched Outlander but I haven’t heard any praises for her performance. David Tennant was stellar as well.
I’m not sure of the rules as it premiered on Nov 20th, just wondered if it might get some recognition. I expect it will do well next year after more voters have seen it. Ritter and Tennant are both great in it. It’s the best thing Marvel’s done — TV or film — in my opinion.
It’s also worth nothing that Netflix racked up more noms than any other network. Amazon got five and Hulu got its first. Since I ditched my cable bill years ago, I don’t find I’m missing much with so many great choices available through online streaming.
No Tatiana Maslaney. 🙁
I agree about the Knick! Was it not eligible?
Television is amazing these days, so many excellent shows. That said, I hope Fargo does better in emmy noms.
The fall deserved nominations, the writing alone is tremendous.
Can anybody please explain to me why I do not see Scandal in any awards? Genuine question… Thx in advance
Can The Americans / Keri Russell / Matthew Rhys get any love? I mean seriously?!
I noticed no one is giving love to Rachel Bloom and Crazy Ex Girlfriend…it is an amazing show and she totally deserves the nod.
Taraji P. Henson deserves that nomination! I absolutely love her as Cookie Lyon and she seems to be the glue that holds that family together. Shame we have to wait til March next year til Empire returns!
Pleased for Viola Davis, Gina Rodriguez & Idris Elba. I absolutely love Jane The Virgin, I just hope the Team Rafael/Team Michael doesn’t go on for too long. Shame Jamie Camil who plays Rogelio De La Vega hasn’t got a nod for his work! I find him absolutely hysterical and so funny as Rogelio.
I semi binge watched American Crime a while ago. It is such a brilliant & powerful drama and the final episode in Season 1 is rather depressing and somewhat tragic. Both Felicity & Regina were great in their roles on the show.
I’m happy for:
Tobias Menzies nomination – he is a fantastic actor and his performance in Outlander is amazing.
Game Of Thrones – even their weakest season is still better than a lot of other shows best seasons
Not happy:
No acting nominations for GoT actors? Not even Lena? Peter Dinklage I can actually understand. It was his weakest season (not his fault, he just wasn’t given any worthy material to work with).
