Melanie Griffith: ‘I’m 58… go ahead, say some more mean things’

It must suck to be a celebrity some days. Usually the trade off seems worth it though. I mean Melanie Griffith is about to get $65k a month in spousal support from her ex, Antonio Banderas. That’s more than most of us make in an entire year. Plus she has that estate in Aspen, as poorly decorated as it is. She’s not hurting for much material-wise, but apparently it bothers her when people talk smack about her on social media, as it would most people. She posted the photo above, where she’s presumably in character or else why would she be sporting tight curls and blue eyeshadow, and basically told the mean people to bring it on.

Melanie wrote: “Here ya go. Unfiltered. I’m 58. And I’m in Hawaii Five O playing Scott Caan’s Mom. Go ahead… Say some more mean things. Merry Christmas.

Melanie is one of those celebrities whom the Daily Mail had on “older lady knee watch” so I get why she’s defensive like this. She had a lot of work done on her face and I wish she would have been subtler with it or more judicious or whatever but I get it. It sucks getting older and it’s a societal thing as I always say. When your friends are doing it, you do it too. LA is this weird plastic surgery fishbowl where the distorted faces become normalized.

So I think some people are pointing out that Melanie isn’t looking like herself more than she’s looking older, but when you’re talking about social media trolls it could just be stupidity and meanness. That seems to be the predominant trolling behavior and it needs to be stopped.

Melanie is using Instagram to show the world she’s doing just fine. She recently posted an inspirational quote about divorce, a throwback photo with her glamorous mom, Tippi Hedren (she’s still rocking at 85), and a holiday photo out with her friends, including Bette Midler and Angelika Houston. I’m so jealous! Plus she’s in Hawaii “working.”

Amen! Love my kids, love my ex's. Always and forever. #nobody's business

    Quack.

I was all feeling sentimental and then read ur comment and laughed. Anyway, kudos to MG.

      • ekaterina says:

I don’t mind surgeries but why the duck face? They all look alike, the high cheek bones, sucked in cheeks and pouty lips, its just very weird.

    • LeAnn Stinks says:

      LOL!!!!

Honestly, I don’t really see her as being all that brave for posting an “unfiltered” picture of herself with all that plastic surgery. Now, if she never had any work done, and posted an unfiltered picture of what her naturally aging face would look like, then I believe her point would have validity.

Also, I have to say that that her mother, Tippi Hedren, is one of the most beautiful women. Just gorgeous.

      • DrM says:

If she ate some food and filled out a bit she’d look a zillion times better. That pic of her with her friends shows how thin she is. Eat, have a glass of wine and some pasta/chocolate etc. ENJOY your life. It is too short for so much angst…

  2. Nancy says:

What was it Mick Jagger sang? What a drag it is getting old. Let it shine Melanie, nobody could have kicked ass like you did in Working Girl. Steven Bauer, Don Johnson and Antonio, you did well girlfriend, you did well.

    • JudyK says:

Forget the others, Don Johnson is still the hottest man alive!!! I just sit and DROOL watching him on Blood and Oil. Damn, he’s a great actor, too.

      • Nancy says:

Yeah he has a handsome face. The Miami Vice days. Bad boy married her as a teenager. I liked them together though. They were the “it” couple there for awhile. She’s not bad, she just did that wacko surgery nonsense, probably in her mind to stay youthful for Banderas……but oops, didn’t work.

      • ISO says:

They started “dating” when she was 14 and I believe he was 19 or in his 20s already. Bleeech.

      • Mayamae says:

The age difference was pretty gross. Plus he was her mom’s co-star and she condoned the relationship.

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

They moved in together when she was fourteen and he was 22. Let that wash over you– the thought, not the vomit it induces.

    • Jonathan says:

She did well because of the men she was able to get? (Tilts head like dog).

I’m all with you with the Working Girl thing, though- god, even if that was the only thing she did of any merit in her life (it’s not), it’d pretty freaking marvellous.

    • Jib says:

You know, as a 54 year old woman, I’m wondering why everyone is saying how bad it is to get old. I know lots of people who didn’t get the gift of getting older because they are dead. As my 85 year old father said, “It beats the alternative.” And really, if you are 54 and still obsessed with your looks, you have definitely missed out on some character development. Don’t get me wrong – I want to look good, neat, well-dressed, groomed, but do I seriously spend any time in front of the mirror counting my wrinkles??? No way!! I have things to make (I’m an artist and teacher,) places to see, lots of things to learn and do before my time runs out, so I spend zero time worrying about if I look old!!

So really, getting older doesn’t suck at all.

  3. Mrs. Wellen Melon says:

At whatever age, Melanie Griffith is one of those rare luminous actors who grabs your attention. Your eye just goes right to her.

So, that’s the basics with her. Add to it that Melanie Griffith is a good actress who can rock a comedy.

She’s all that. I love her.

    Signed,
    A Fellow 58 Year-Old

    • Erinn says:

I can’t believe how much attention she can grab on screen. She just really has that way about her. I just wish she’d tweaked herself a little less – because it makes me sad that she thinks she needs to do that to herself.

My god, her mother was stunning too.

    • Sabrine says:

Anyone the same age is not going to make snarky and unkind comments on her appearance, most anyway. Those younger find it amusing to criticize someone who has had work done. When they are 58, they’re home free because they’re not a celebrity being scrutinized on a daily basis when they’ve tried to prolong their livelihood with cosmetic work. So what goes around doesn’t always come around.

    • Goo says:

      I think she’s marvelous too! Go, Melanie…

      • Natalia says:

@Sabrine: I think the best revenge is knowing that those snarky ageists who aren’t famous will get theirs when it’s their turn to be 58. I don’t think they’ll escape it at all. When you’re 58, you’re mostly invisible, or scorned. (Depends on the geographics, though.) That said, Melanie is the bomb. She has nothing to worry about.

    • Naddie says:

I disagree, I’ve seen movies with her but I barely recall she was on it. I mean, she’s good, but nothing luminous.

  4. BengalCat2000 says:

Tippi Hedren was the most beautiful of the Hitchcock women, imo…I’ll always love Melanie in Working Girl and I think she looks a little better in these pics but I’ve yet to have my coffee…

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree about Tippi. I will always loathe Alfred Hitchcock for ruining her career because she wouldn’t sleep the disgusting thing.

      • BengalCat2000 says:

@ GNAT, have you read Spellbound by Beauty? It’s all about Hitchcock’s obsession with her. I appreciate his art, but I think he was a very strange person. He put her thru living hell, just horrible.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

No, that sounds really interesting. I’ll read it, thanks!

      • MrsBPitt says:

Tippi was beautiful…but she was a terrible actress…T.E.R.R.I.B.L.E!

      • Nancy says:

Mrs PItt: The actresses back in the day were all so d.r.a.m.a.t.i.c. I remember laughing at parts of Birds that weren’t supposed to be funny. Janet Leigh pretty much the same. Tippi named Melanie after her character, but I guess everyone knows that.

      • LeAnn Stinks says:

Hitch had a thing for blondes, and Tippi is/was gorgeous.

I always wondered if Grace Kelly had an affair with him, as she was known to have slept with almost all of her leading actors.

    • sherry says:

I don’t agree. Grace Kelly was and will always be my favorite actress (Hitchcock or otherwise). Rear Window and To Catch A Thief are still two of my favorite movies.

    • EOA says:

Melanie Griffith was born 6 years before The Birds was released, so no, she was not named after Hedren’s character in that film.

  5. Katie says:

Melanie, if you really want to embrace being 58 years old, stop messing with your face. Age gracefully. Otherwise, this is all just irony.

    • minx says:

That’s just what I was going to say. “Unfiltered?” Hardly.

    • Tate says:

Exactly. Hard to take her seriously about this with the amount of work she has had done.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I have to agree. She looks 68 from all the work, tanning, drugs and smoking. I would hardly say she has embraced aging gracefully. I know it’s hard in her business to do so, but you have to make a choice. I also think addressing the “mean” comments just invites more. She should ignore them or not read them.

      • minx says:

Exactly, don’t even read that stuff.

      • Narak says:

I would say your comments are mean and judgemental.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        @Narak
youre entitled to your opinion, and I’m entitled to mine. She’s claiming to be “unfiltered” and to look the way she does because of her age. She’s a year younger than I am, and she looks 10 years older because of her lifestyle. She’s hardly “unfiltered” as her numerous plastic surgeries are obvious. If that’s mean, it’s mean. I wouldn’t call it judgmental – I’m not saying she’s a bad person – but as I said, you’re entitled to your opinion.

      • GingerCrunch says:

Absolutely agree she’s inviting more and it’ll just get uglier. I’m of a certain age and would def not want that kinda stress! It ages you! 😏

      • Pandy says:

I think she means unfiltered as in, she didn’t doctor the photo before posting. I think she looks great!

      • Zwella Ingrid says:

She also looks super thin in the pics with Bette, etc. My personal opinion is women look older when they are extremely thin. I think her plastic surgery looks better now than it did at an earlier point.

    • Patricia says:

I wonder if the damage is just done at this point. I wonder if there’s any chance of her face settling, or if she’s always going to have this “just hopped off the plastic surgeon’s table” look about her.

I find her so warm and relatable. Very sad what has happened to her natural beauty.

    • Betsy says:

      +1
I do not get the obsession with not looking older at all, ever. And then pretending that despite all your surgeries and abrasions and needles, you’re okay with how you look.

    • snowflake says:

Easier said than done. I’m 39 and seeing signs of aging. Its not easy to deal with. People don’t go under the knife thinking they’re going to look worse after surgery. They come out and theyare stuck with it. Not everyone’s cool with getting old. Its harder for some people.

      • Cris says:

I am 58, never had anything done, ever, and I look better than her with no filters. Jacking yourself up is really pathetic. Just take care of yourself, and stay out of that darn sun. Smoking is the devil to your face as well.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Probably no one is cool with getting older, honestly. But there’s nothing you can really do about it. Like all of life’s challenges, you have to sit down and think about how you’re going to handle it. Truthfully, I would consider plastic surgery on my face later on if it worked. But it really doesn’t, unless you don’t mind looking alien or frozen. If it helps at all, snowflake, you are at the worst stage now, or at least that was the worst for me. When the first signs appear, you feel like Holy Sh&t, I’m going to wake up tomorrow and look like a crone. It’s scary. But you get used to one thing, you go on with life, then another subtle change appears and it’s still “damn” but not as bad. You’re used to being young and pretty, and it’s fun. Also, there’s a certain kind of power in that, and letting go of that power is hard. But it makes you look for your power inside yourself. It’s good for you. (Stop giving me that look) You’ll find it, and everything will be ok. Being young and pretty is not who you are, it’s just how you’re used to looking on the outside. I know you, and there’s a lot more to you than that. Try not to stress. ❤️

      • SJO says:

Itsok Hon. I am 49 and I get just a little botox on my crows feet. Makes me feel better. And if I could afford to get my eyes done I would. Nobody likes it but liars and women who haven’t gotten there yet. Don’t apologize for being honest.

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

        What GNAT said.
        Beautiful reply, GNAT.

      • sherry says:

Great reply, GNAT! I’ll be 53 in January and agree with everything you said. Live life to the fullest and make yourself beautiful on the inside. When it’s all said and done, that’s the only part that really counts anyway.

      • Boo says:

I agree with GNAT too. Beautifully said. Same boat here.

Adding my own thoughts… getting older is an accomplishment. Many people don’t have that luxury and it is a luxury. When I think of people i’ve known who died at a young age or before 50 – none due to abuse of self but rather tragic accident, disease – it’s a tragedy. We are here to experience life and just do the best we can. That ‘best’ is different for everyone but you get more out of being your true self by truly growing.

      • Jaded says:

I’m 63 now, and I’ve never had a moment’s anxiety about getting older. Hitting my fifties was wonderful as it was a pivotal decade where I really felt I had learned to be in control of my life and what made me happy, and to change that which wasn’t making me happy. My sixties? Even better. Yes there are days when my mind makes a promise that my body can’t fill, and yes things are sagging and my hair is turning grey but the point is, own it. Make it something you’ve earned. Look at the experiences that have happened that make you beautiful and appealing. Hell, I even stopped colouring my hair. I earned those grey hairs and I like them. The point is, Melanie’s kind of over the top surgeries and fillers and botox scream “I’m not good enough as an older woman” and that makes me sad. It’s the pressure from Hollywood on women that turns them against themselves and diminishes their worthiness for reasons that have only to do with desperately maintaining a youthful appearance.

I call my sixties my zen years because I’ve calmed out about so many things that used to matter and now don’t, but I could equally call them my IDGAF years because that’s how I feel and it feels good.

      • Snowflake says:

Thanks, Gnat, that was sweet. I am getting used to it, doesn’t bother me as much as when I first started noticing changes. But like you said, the power of pretty, that’s the hardest for me. And I’m less vain than a lot of people. I can see how someone can fall down the rabbit hole of plastic surgery and go too far

      • perplexed says:

I think the bad part of aging is not feeling like you’ve accomplished what you think you could have accomplished. But the media never talks about that much — it seems like they focus more on appearance issues.

      • Skyblue says:

I turn 49 on Sunday and while I “get” the love yourself, your looks aren’t important, own your grays and wrinkles reassurances everyone hands out, I gotta admit I hate the “Tom Hanks” furrow between my brows and a wee bit of botox softens it. I also haven’t yet made peace with my grays…maybe soon. I’m trying to age gracefully but it is a real struggle. Mostly because I think I’m mourning lost time and some of the changes that come with aging just don’t feel that good. Weird aches and pains…vision changes…going to need cheater glasses very soon. Man…I’m a downer today ! Sorry!

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Don’t be sorry, Skyblue. 48-50 was hard for me, too. I try to stay positive and look at the bright side, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t difficult and sometimes it just stinks.

      • Jib says:

I’m with Jaded. I’m 54, I quit drinking anything at all 5 years ago (drinking ages the crap out of you,) my skin is much nicer than when I drank and smoked, I feel great, I have been working on a lot of stuff inside that I never had time to address, I finally love myself and I know that I am a good person. Life is really, really much better now than it ever was. Do men look at me?? Sure, but not like when I was in my 20s, blonde, blue-eyed, fit, and pretty. I am still attractive, but I don’t define myself by my looks, and I don’t define myself anymore by how men react to me. I’m too busy and happy to care!! I am also very spiritual (not religious) and believe there is so much more than what we see, so I’m enjoying everything in life much more than I ever had.

It makes me sad to see so many of you younger women dreading aging and so many older women here dislike the aging process. Aging is a gift denied to many. Being a “crone,” having wisdom and compassion, is a wonderful time of life. Look inside, embrace the growth and enjoy it!!

    • epiphany says:

Even after working on the periphery of celebrity for several years, I still find myself shocked at how incredibly delusional these people can be. No one EVER ridiculed Melanie for her age; they ridiculed her because she had one cosmetic surgery after another, proving that she, herself, was unable to contend with the march of time, and now she wants to complain because others are joining the fray. Talk about the pot calling the kettle…

      • JenniferJustice says:

I agree. I suppose any negative comments can be taken as someone simply being mean, but IMO I see the negativity toward excessive plastic surgery as more of a caution to other women that it doesn’t work as far as making celebrities feel better about themselves – maybe momentarily but then it’s on to the next tweak again and again until it becomes painful to look at.

And for the record, Melanie was doing this long before “aging” was an issue. She just plain didn’t like her face. She had lip injections to the point her mouth was no longer her’s. She had large breast implants in her 30’s because she wanted a giant bossom. She had lipo on her body and she had facial work done to minimize her wide lower face, WHICH WAS WHAT MADE HER MELANIE GRIFFITH. My point is that was all done before she was feeling age and gravity. That was all done due to vanity and insecurity – nothing to do with getting aged out in Hollywood. Melanie doesn’t want to admit she has always been extremely insecure about her looks because she was never the Hollywood beauty standard but we all liked her just the way she was and that’s why she got the parts she did back in the day because she was unique looking.

Still love her tiny soft voice and the warmth she exudes. I know everybody loves Working Girl and I do too, but even better, I loved her in Crazy in Alambama, and Paradise. I could see in Paradise, Melanie is probably a very loving mother.

      • LeAnn Stinks says:

        Very well said, epiphany.

Although he voice is cute, it always seemed like a poor Marilyn Monroe imitation to me.

      • LeAnn Stinks says:

Oops sorry, her, not he. 🙂

    • boredblond says:

It’s not hate to say she’s pretty much erased the unique beauty from her face all on her own..She removed the ‘Melanie” the way Ms Hawn removed her “Goldie”…those aren’t mean comments, they’re just observations, but don’t pretend you don’t want people to notice..that’s why you had the work done.

    • kibbles says:

I agree. I really think that most comments that are critical of her looks have more to do with how she jacked up her own face more than whatever natural aging process is going on underneath. Her face is messed up because she went overboard. It’s just embarrassing that she posts an unfiltered photo as if that makes her all natural. No, she along with many other celebrities learn the hard way that no amount of money will stop the aging process. In fact, spending millions to jack of your face only makes things much worse.

  6. Norman Bates's Mother says:

I was better off not knowing that something like “older lady knee watch” exists. Does Daily Mail search for their new employees outside the Heartless Dick Anonymous meetings?

She didn’t need to mess with her face and she’d be a beautiful 58-year old without it – it’s one thing to mention that. But ridiculing someone for showing the natural signs of aging? That’s just cruel and probably one of the reasons she started messing with her face in the first place. Surprise, surprise – online trolls and DM employees will age too, wrinkly knees and all. I hope they’ll age into the faces they deserve – like Sean Penn.

    • Santia says:

She really was beautiful. Now, she just looks …. odd. Not even old. Just not human.

The sad thing is that no one in the tabloid industry seems to be able to say “let’s not do this; these celebrities are people, too, and have feelings.”

      • ladysussex says:

I agree. I don’t remember her nose being like that at all. And DARN is looking at her photo incentivizing me to stay out of the sun!

    • LAK says:

Does it help to know that DM online I edited by Piers Morgan and he used to run an even more meangirl tabloid throughout the 90s and some of 00s?

DM online is completely tabloid now. And as mean as any old school tabloid. Has all the hallmarks of Piers Morgan’s heyday at the helm of the Mirror.

Doesn’t excuse what they do, but when you’ve grown up with a daily dose of cruel meangirl tabloids, you become immune to the DM online. An what they do isn’t a surprise.

    • Narak says:

The Daily Mail should have an older lady finger watch, I know I’ve got one I’d like to give them.

  7. fluffyrabbit says:

Posing with your best duckface after you have smoked for decades only emphasizes all the lines around your mouth as well as makes you look absolutely ridiculous. This is definitely the worst possible pose for an older woman and should be left to adolescents who have not realized they share no DNA with aquatic fowl.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I will never understand the duck face. At any age, but yes, even more so when you’re old enough to know better.

  8. MelissaManifesto says:

Since I’m all about not putting a woman, any woman, down for her looks, I shall extend the same courtesy here. However, Melanie intentionally messed up with her face, probably thinking there were greener pastures to be explored with plastic surgery, and did not know and/or was not advised when to stop. There are things that become more obvious with age, all and all I do think she’s lovely.

  9. ali.hanlon says:

    Love Melanie. Talented and funny!

Now her daughter Dakota. If only she had half her mother’s talent.

  10. Luca76 says:

Love the Jennifer Weiner quote it’s so true.

  11. Neelyo says:

She always had a rather square face but in that top photo it looks like her jaw has been shaved down. Is that possible?

    • tracking says:

She’s lost a tremendous amount of weight, evident in the girls’ night pic. To me it appears she’s lost every bit of fat from her face. But she’s obviously had lots of procedures, including some kind of tightening around her jaw it seems.

    • imqrious2 says:

Yes, you *can* shave the jaw bone: https://hsusurgery.com/Procedures/Face/Jaw-Shaving-Beverly-Hills-CA

Jenner did it, to “feminize” her face (her surgeon gave a quote), and Rumer Willis did it, as well (just google Rumer Willis jaw surgery).

    • KiddVicious says:

I’ve heard that botox can slim down a square jaw. Gwyneth Paltrow’s square jaw has been slimmed down quite a bit and I’ve wondered how she did it. I like my square jaw but I think as I age it could look a bit jowly.

  12. K says:

Everyone gets old. Some people exacerbate the process with chain smoking, sun tanning, and nose candy.

  13. vauvert says:

She used to be funny and sexy – not drop dead beautiful, but she had real sex appeal. Between her lifestyle choices and whatever procedures she had done, she now just looks terrible, not because of aging. I feel the same way about Meg Ryan. It’s like they put something in the water in that town, convincing women that making a caricature of themselves with inflated lips, pulled up eyes and temples, jacked up jaws and shrivelled noses is somehow appealing. It is not.
That being said, DM is a horrible rag.
Oh – yes, knees and elbow and necks age the worst. There is an easy solution, don’t show them as much. Not suggesting a burqa here… but why would you wear short skirts or low cut tops if you are not happy with how they look or if the comments bother you?

  14. It'sJustBlanche says:

The duck face is clearly meant to be ironic. She is probably getting to the point where she just doesn’t care what people think. At least I hope so.

Love Working Girl. Wish her well.

  15. Kitten says:

I feel bad for her. I can’t help it.

Oh, and “poorly decorated” is an understatement.

  16. HappyMom says:

She’s had such a fascinating life-from growing up in Hollywood, to starring in great movies, and being in relationships with some of the hottest actors in their day. I loved her in Working Girl. She’s a very watchable comedic actress. She needs to own all that and not be on social media asking for validation from people.

  17. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

How about a little advice, Melanie? Please stop making the duck face.

  18. LAK says:

I sigh for how she might have looked naturally.

  19. HK9 says:

Look, I’ve always considered Melanie Griffith go be a very beautiful woman but there’s no denying that the work she had done on her face was bad. What’s done is done, she should keep her head up and keep it movin.

  20. Esmom says:

Love that photo of her and her daughters, so sweet. I think she’d started messing with her face back then but it doesn’t show in that shot, she still looks like her young luminous self.

  21. Merritt says:

I feel bad for her in many ways. She first had to have reconstructive work on her face as a teen, to repair damage done by being mauled by a lion. I think that contributed to her later issues with her appearance.

    • minx says:

My theory is that she was the youngest of a group of people–Don Johnson, Patti D’Arbanville, Pamela and Michael DesBarres–so, for a long time, her thing was being the nymphet with the little girl voice.
When she grew out of that it was hard for her. She also married men like Don Johnson and Antonio Banderas who had women throwing themselves at them.
Aging is always hard for women in Hollywood, but I think it was doubly hard for her, so she went under the knife a lot, dieted a lot.
What’s done is done, but it’s too bad.

    • perplexed says:

Say what? She was mauled by a lion??? Yeah, that would do a number on me too.

    • justagirl says:

Exactly – Melanie hasn’t looked like ‘herself’ since she was a teen and was attacked by one of the animals from her mother’s sanctuary.

They were filming a movie with these lions and Melanie was grabbed, tossed around & clawed. She needed over 100 stitches and facial reconstructive surgery, and was afraid she might lose one of her eyes.

That would really affect your self-confidence in your appearance. Also, I’d imagine that things would settle & change differently with age, after all that facial trauma.

I think she looks wonderful. She is fifty-eight after all and I love that she hasn’t gone for the fake look of a face lift. I am sure she will but I hope she waits awhile. And I would give anything for her long legs. I hope she ignores people and just lives her life.

    • minx says:

Uh, she’s had a lot of work done. Look at pictures when she was younger.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

She is a walking, talking example of the fake look of a face lift. Are you kidding?

    • Jaded says:

She’s had so much plastic surgery, botox and fillers that she’s barely recognizable. And that’s sad when you have so much pressure on you to remain forever young that you ruin your face.

    • JenniferJustice says:

Um…she has had a face lift, an eye lift, lip implants and injections, boob job(s), something done to the lower half of her face to narrow it, fake teeth, hair extenstions (not now but previously), lipo, and that’s not counting all the non-knife stuff like botox and restalin. She has a very fake look from not just a face lift, but much much more. Look through her age progression photos. It was the early 90s when she and Don Johnson split for the second time and that’s when she went off the deepend with plastic surgery.

    • Mel says:

“I think she looks wonderful. She is fifty-eight after all”

Huh? Yes, she is FIFTY-eight, not eighty-eight.

This is not against Melanie, it’s not against anyone.
But I do think this mentality – that fifty-eight is somehow *supposed* to be “old” – is a major contributing factor to Melanie’s (and many others’) ailments, starting with totally unnecessary (AND ageing) plastic surgery.

  23. FingerBinger says:

I wouldn’t criticize her appearance but she is a bad actress.

    • Aren says:

I agree. She became successful because she was an underage girl surrounded by adult pervs.
There’s little special about her IMO, which might be why she’s so insecure.

  24. Lou says:

People are horrible. We are all guilty of saying shitty things about celebrities when really and truly they just act like everyone else but with more money and access. How about we all look in our own closets before we judge others for dumb shit?

I like Melanie. I think she handled her divorce with grace. Celebrities much less famous than her would have milked it for publicity for years.

  25. Aren says:

She makes me sad. She’s the old woman no young person ever wants to become.
Just like Dina Lohan and Pimp Mama Kris.
And now I wonder and wonder how come Kristie Brinkley is 61.

  26. taxi says:

I think minx is right & that Melanie was always the cute “little girl” of her crowd with the baby voice. She was cute & had good comic timing but it cannot have been easy to be the “cute” daughter of a woman so widely proclaimed as “beautiful.”

It’s sad that Melanie generally dresses as if she were much younger – dresses are too short, too tight, very low cut, etc. Sarandon, McDowell, Pfeiffer, Seymour, Mirren, Fonda, Streep, Dana Delaney, Renee Russo, etc., have all transitioned more gracefully through middle age toward 60 and beyond.

  27. Deana says:

I went to a plastic surgeon to have a mole removed from my face. Her words to me: “I tell my patients: It’s either your face or your ass”

    • dj says:

OMG! The face or the ass comment is gold. My mom used to say that phrase all the time when I was growing up. The older I have gotten (55 now) the more I see it. IMO, Hollywood does not understand that if you are worried about the rear, your face looks horridly too thin usually (see Terri Hatcher). Unfortunately, too many older actresses look haggard because of not having enough “fat” in their face. This gives a more youthful appearance when you have a little bit fuller face. Kirsten Dunst was speaking on TV about how she put on (I think) about 20 pounds for Fargo. She said I just ate normal things like bread and cheese and it was great! Christie Brinkley was explaining how she looks so great at 61. She talked about doing leg lifts while watching TV, staying away from pasta ( bread?) and eating frozen blueberries to stave off hunger as a treat. While CB looks fabulous I just thought how sad! Give me a bowl of spaghetti and bread and wine and I will be a little thicker and a damn sight happier. But CB does look good. Props to her.

  28. Bridget says:

Melanie Griffith was a Hollywood child in the 70s. At the age when a normal teenager would have been graduating high school she was hitting the party circuit hard and living with Ryan O’Neil. Her looks are her acting career are what she has, so I get it.

  29. Jaded says:

Did anyone ever see her in a movie she made with Don Johnson called “Paradise”? She was AMAZING in it, she truly is a very good actor and can hold her own in a very dramatic role.

  30. Pandy says:

I’m pro cosmetic surgery/botox etc., but I always thought she might have gone a bit over board. I saw her on Hot in Cleveland a year or so ago and she looked great on screen! Maybe it’s just still photographs? I know mine are horrific now lol.

  31. BooBooLaRue says:

No matter what she does to her face (duck lips), the neck doesn’t lie.

  32. Bettyrose says:

She comes from Hollywood royalty and had a good run playing the sexy girl, even doing nude scenes, with a fairly normal bod. She didn’t have to starve herself to get cast. She’s luckier than most. But nothing is worth feeling like you have to duckface yourself to be loved in your older years (and she’s not even there yet).

  33. Shaunna says:

What is on the front of her pants?

  34. analee says:

Melanie’s mother really was a gorgeous woman; it’s possible that Melanie, growing up and acting in Hollywood, has always felt overshadowed and insecure about her looks partly from that. (She was pretty, but far from head turning, like Tippi.) Now, she looks not just hard and odd and bitter to me, from her multiple plastic surgeries and her filler and over-Botoxed, almost mangled features, but depleted of a sort of winsome sweetness that she once appeared to have, a kind of vulnerability that made her likable onscreen. I think she was always an insecure, appearance obsessed woman, and has grown more so–enormously–as she’s aged, since she never found or recognized anything she loved within herself to grow from and develop into. Once she was no longer of an ingĂŠnue age, and no longer cast in younger women’s roles, she had no idea who she was or who she is “supposed” to be, and she was never a good enough actress to make the transition from “pretty and young” to a mature and more interesting, multi dimensional actress–or person. That eerie “little girl” voice of hers belongs to the character/persona she still identifies the most with and is most comfortable with. It is sad that she has never once seemed at home in her body or self for decades, now, in all these years since she–long ago–outgrew it.

    • JenniferJustice says:

RE struggling with insecurity because her mother was/is a truly striking woman and an icon of her era – I think you hit the nail on the head. Also, I don’t beleive Melanie got jobs because she was surrounded by pervs. She got jobs because she was Tippi’s and Peter Griffith’s daughter. Both of her parents were well-established in the industry. Same as Gwyneth Paltrow – so so actress, so so looks, but born into the industry to parents with fame, wealth, and influence. I never understood the sex appeal of Melanie other than the little girl voice. I liked her because she is relatable and exudes a warmth, but sexy? No.

    • perplexed says:

Her mother appears to have been more elegant looking, but I wonder if a young Melanie Griffith appears less good-looking because she came of age during a really bad fashion decade (the 70s?) and then continued into her acting prime into another really bad fashion decade (the 80s?). Did anyone look that good during those decades? In the 80s, she had some bad Princess Diana hair going on…(nonetheless, I was struck by the fact that celebrities seemed less afraid/reluctant to have short hair back then).

In some of her young photos on Google Images, she looks like…Kristen Stewart.

  35. DEB says:

I think she’s more like 60. Diane Lane lies about her age too, subtracting at least seven years from it. These people, lol.

  36. beauxblue says:

While I agree it is a bit sad that people say hurtful things, the reality is when you choose to live such a public life you are setting your self up for it. if you don’t want to impinge on someone’s right to free speech, and you don’t want your feeling hurt, stop posting everything you do.

  37. perplexed says:

Why do celebrities go on Instagram to ask for people’s comments? I get that you need to use social media for promotion of your work, but…still….celebrities seem too much like regular people nowadays in expecting validation.

  38. db says:

I’ve always liked MG, she’s got a unique, compelling presence about her. She’s stood out in every movie of hers I’ve seen. It’s sad the way her appearance has been attacked over the years, and it began even before she did any major interventions, around 30-35. Btw, Daily Mail needs to f**k off.

  39. iheartgossip says:

Oh Gurl. You and the Kardassian’s have never had work done, nor do you use filters. Um, sure Jan. Sure. Yikes.

  40. go girl says:

    Only 58???

She looks like Jessica Lange here.

  41. jj says:

I’m sorry, she looks like Madame.

  42. Lizzieb says:

I think she’s looking for attention, duh. She looks almost anorexic in the photo with the other women. Probably stress from the divorce. She totally eff’d up her face. In a town where looks are everything I bet it sucks to wake up every morning and look in the mirror knowing she did it to herself.

What’s the deal with LA? Since looks are everything, you’d think there would be a better selection of plastic surgeons.

I don’t think she had good parenting.

  43. lisa says:

terrible person (see tatum oneal’s book)

    terrible actress (see shining through)

  44. Beezers says:

Other than Working Girl, I was never really impressed with her acting. However, I saw her the first time she appeared on Hawaii 5-0 as Scott Caan’s mother, and she acted the heck out of that role. She was so good that I was shocked, because I had never seen act a dramatic role so well.

She did have a lot of obvious plastic surgery, so she has to deal with that, but I’m glad she seems to feel better about herself and is still working.

  45. Debutante says:

Oh Melanie, nobody is saying mean things about you because of your AGE !!!

    Dope.

  46. Sara says:

She would probably look good if she hadn’t have messed with her face.
