Here are some assorted photos from the big Palm Springs International Film Festival gala, which was held on Saturday night. We’ve been covering photos from the event all morning in individual posts, but it’s worth doing some fashion coverage of some of the stars who came out but didn’t make many headlines. Cate Blanchett picked up some kind of lifetime achievement award at the PSIFF, and she wowed the crowd with this Marc Jacobs dress. While I think this could have been an ill-fitting disaster on someone else, Cate pulls it off.
It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Blanchett’s style, and I’ve been enjoying the fashion show she gave us throughout the fall. It’s pretty much a guarantee that she’ll be doing all of the awards shows this year, so I hope we see more of the same, a wide variety of looks and designers. As in, I hope she doesn’t just get Armani to dress her for every event. While I love Cate in Armani, I love it more when she introduces us to new designers.
And here’s Cate’s Carol costar, Rooney Mara. Mara wore a Lanvin mini. I feel… like she might need a new stylist? Or new makeup people.
Brie Larson in Jason Wu. Sophisticated, simple and a color you don’t see on the red carpet that much. I like it. I feel like Brie isn’t much of a Fashion Girl, so I’m not expecting much from her awards season, sartorially at least. I do think Brie is a major contender for some of the big awards though. And hey, maybe she’s dating Tom Hiddleston.
Helen Mirren in a beautiful color! Is it wrong that I want her sweater?
Christian Bale and his wife Sibi. I’m really liking Bale’s beard these days. I know I’m probably alone there.

Cate’s blush is to strong, otherwise she looks great. But, her personality in recent months put me off her, so she doesn’t look spectacular to me anymore.
Rooney looks amazing. Great dress, hair, makeup. Perfect.
The rest I don’t like.
She looks uncomfortable in the dress but then you look at everyone else and theirs are more ill-fitting. Cate just knows how to stand in a dress.
“Christian Bale and his wife Sibi. I’m really liking Bale’s beard these days. I know I’m probably alone there.”
^^ I’m let you be alone on this, dear, He looks like his name is D’artagnan In a College production of the three Musketeers
Brie and Cate Look divine
I like Cate’s dress, but her makeup seems a bit too much. Helen looks great.
I can deal with that Bale beard. He’ll probably let it go to full mountain man again though.
Love it! Wanna see the bracelet, tho. 😬
Sartorially speaking, Cate can do no wrong in my eyes.
I feel like Cate’s dress is SO mother of the bride. And her makeup ages her, especially that horrible orange blush on just the apples of her checks.
I HATE Rooney Mara’s whole look here… The dress is a very odd mix of lingerie and little girl dress, emphasised further by the bare legs and flats (not that I expect her to wear panty hose or leggings). Hair is too severe and makeup is blah. Overall, I’m not quite sure if there’s too much or too little going on, but it’s bad.
Other than adding that Helen Mirren’s ensemble is awful as well with that mix of very casual sweater and evening gown skirt and topping that off by looking like she’s been wearing and rolling around in that outfit forever causing it to be super wrinkly, none of the others are worth a mention in my opinion.
All these women have teams of stylists at their disposal, yet none of them look good.
I agree, JoJo, regarding CB’s dress. It looks as if the designer thought it “just a hit too plain” so just plonked a big sticker on to the front.
It’s like the episode of “Friends” in which Phoebe spills something on her gown and pins a huge Christmas decoration on top to cover it up!
Stunning! I agree with you (and based on the headline, I was fully expecting to hate it before I saw the pic). Would look terrible on lots of people, myself included 😂, but Cate makes it work.
Helen Mirren is rocking it! I hope I have half as much confidence and “joie de vivre” when I’m her age.
Is Cate wearing a dress from the Leona Helmsley collection?
Um, did they all get these dresses in the mother-of-the bride section of a second-rate bridal shop? Including Mara, wearing a sad slip from said section.
I agree Cate’s dress is matronly, she’s lovely but this dress does nothing for her.
Brie Larson looks fantastic! I love the dress on her, very good colour and style. Her hair and makeup are gorgeous. She’s the best of the bunch, definitely. Cate, I’m afraid, is not looking great lately – something is off, the fit of the dress, but also her makeup is terrible. Mara looks like Mara – like she’s starving herself every day and it makes her permanently pissed. Woud it kill her to smile just once? I don’t want to body shame anyone but with her legs I would not wear such a short dress! Instead, all the attention should be focused on her beautiful face.
Dame Helen is fine, I forgive her the sweater – colour is fabulous on her.
I agree, I think Brie looks beautiful. I love that color on her and the cut really flatters her waist. I do wonder what the top looks like from the side, though. There might be some gaps at the sides on the bodice.
It’s ugly and it looks like something’s attacking her
I used to love Cate Blanchett then Woody Allen happened.
She traded her dignity for an award.
Always good to see big stars hustling for the Oscar. Cate’s dress is gorgeous.
She’s definitely worn this one before. I can’t remember where but probably a couple of years back.
She wore a Schiaparelli couture dress with heart appliqués last year that had the same structure as this one. It was shorter though
Cate’s dress is gorgeous, even from the back & the bracelet is a showstopper. Rooney got caught outside in her slip & Helen was snapped before she had a chance to put on a good bra & change tops. I’ve never seen Brie as anyone but the daughter in U.S. of Tara. Her garb is unremarkable. Mrs. Bales like Middleton hair, I think.
