When I covered these Johnny Depp & Amber Heard photos from the PSIFF earlier this week, I said that Depp “looks three sheets to the wind in these photos. Even if he wasn’t drunk in these photos, he certainly carries that ‘drunk’ look with him all the time now.” I even put “drunk” in the headline! And it’s true. I mean, I don’t even know if Depp was fully or half in the bag in Palm Springs, but even if he wasn’t, he just looks drunk all the time these days. He always looks like he’s mid-stagger. He’s bloated, and I swear he’s started wearing really cakey makeup on his red carpets too. The whole situation is a mess. But how big of a mess was it in Palm Springs? Star Magazine and Radar are carrying the same story about how Depp was a messy drunk this weekend.
Though he made a good impression with locals by signing autographs with fans on the red carpet, Johnny Depp’s bloated, disheveled appearance was difficult to ignore. One observer told Radar, “He was very friendly but almost unrecognizable! He looked to have put on a good 30 pounds at least…His hair was a greasy mess, and his teeth were yellowed too. It was pretty shocking. He looked more like Marlon Brando than Johnny Depp!”
Inside, Depp, 52, raised eyebrows among the industry insiders with odd behavior. “During the dinner, he went over to Christian Bale’s table and squatted on the floor talking to him,” another eyewitness added. But he seemed to have lost the gift of gab by the time he got on stage to receive his award. Instead of a traditional acceptance speech, “He kind of mumbled, ‘How was the beef?'” the source said. “He seemed really confused and rambling and then just ended abruptly by saying ‘It’s over with, that’s it,’ before just walking off. People were kind of looking at each other like, ‘What just happened?’ It was bizarre.”
Depp was later a no-show at the after-party at the Parker hotel. And insiders tell Radar this is just the latest example of his troubling professional appearances. At one recent photoshoot, a source told Radar, “He showed up totally worse for the wear and seemingly intoxicated. He was stumbling, unable to engage in a coherent conversation, nearly impossible to work with. It took the team several hours to get him presentable.”
At what point does this move from a “he’s a mess, he needs to tighten up in public” story to a “seriously, he needs an intervention and rehab” story? Is this the point? I go back and forth on this – Depp has the money, means and time to take a break and go through the program and sober up. He just doesn’t have the desire, possibly because he hasn’t hit rock bottom yet. He’s trying though. “How was the beef?” is a pretty great opening line for an awards show speech. Maybe he wasn’t drunk, it was just exquisite performance art/Shia LaBeouf shoutout. Also: what does Amber have to say about all of this? In her mind, are they Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald? Or Sid & Nancy?

Whether or not he is, he appears messed up. I’m still riled they thought they could just ignore laws and take their dogs abroad. That’s just narcissistic and stupid.
To be honest I think the dog situation was more Amber than him, she screams entitlement. Just need to look at the stupid comments she made afterwards, he hasn’t said a thing about it.

I can’t agree that he was silent- because he wasn’t. He was just as immature about the whole thing, just in a jokier manner. The problem was – it’s easy to say two tiny dogs aren’t going to make a big difference. But when every person gets an exception, it does cause a problem. And it’s not fair for celebrities to have special treatment over anyone else when it comes to this kind of thing.
I think it is safe to say we have moved into “he needs an intervention and rehab” territory.

Unfortunately I have to agree that he looks incredibly bad and in need of an intervention. People love to snark all the time that celebrities look “cracked out” but this is one of the rare cases where he legitimately looks like he’s on hard drugs like cocaine or has serious problem with alcohol. He’s barely campaigning but if he was sober and got out there more he would have been a sure fire Oscar nominee and possibly even a winner since everyone loves a redemption story. Instead, he’s doing messy af appearances. I’d love for him to clean up and keep doing Black Mass like films but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

He’s looking rough these days and its obvs that he plastered most of the time he’s seen in public – so sad. Amber is an enabler, she’s more interested in what he can do for her ‘career’ than him as a person. He was known for his professionalism both on and off the set.
Johnny has been “looking rough” for several years now. I remember about three, four years ago seeing Johnny falling down drunk in the street. His BG picked him up several times off the street on different occasions. Johnny got up and just continued signing author graphs as if nothing happened. I’m wondering if Amber don’t care what state he’s in because she can just do her own thing with her GFs, just a thought. IMO, is just so strange for a young woman to live this life with a man 20+ years older who is obviously must be quite challenging to live with or she might have her own challenges but has kept them on the QT.
Can you imagine what their interactions are really like. I imagine it’s similar to Fester and Debbie (Addams Family Values). She can’t possibly, actually love him. I hate to say it, but it’s almost like she’s waiting for him to die so that she can reap some real benefit. Play the sad, young widow to the megastar.

To me, Depp actually looked a bit better than he did on previous recent occasions. Judging by the look in his eyes, he seemed to be a bit more ‘present’ and ‘awake’. But his overall appearance is not good, I agree. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is dealing with a serious illness. That might also be the reason the Palm Springs International Film Festival presented him with a lifetime achievement award.
As for Amber, I don’t think she needs drugs in order to get high or stoned. Put her in a beautiful dress at a prestigious event and make sure the flashbulbs go off. For her, there seems to be no bigger kick than being photographed.
Using what? I am not being snarky, but honestly asking. These pictures of Depp are gonna give me nightmares. What drug even makes you look like this? He looks not long for this world, his teeth alone are making me ill, never mind the unfocused eyes and waxy skin.
This story definitely sounds like some kind of “pills” are involved when they talked about his speech. Think Anna Nicole Smith. I don’t think this is just alcohol. Probably “legal” pills prescribed by a Hollywood doctor for “pain” or “stress” but definitely not just alcohol. I hope he gets help.

My guess is pills and/or cocaine, maybe meth…unsure about the last one though as meth addiction would be harder to hide. The level of drug use is obviously speculation on my part and I could be wrong, but one thing I am certain of: Amber is high in these pics, and I think opiates are her drug of choice.

OMG! This! I don’t think she has the drinking problem that he does, but I definitely think she’s into blow with him and might even be what drew the/brought them together. More people than we realize do blow in a major way in Hollywood. It’s how many actresses and singers stay thin and keep up energy on crazy schedules that don’t allow enough sleep.

I think you’re right. She’s drinking and using whatever it is with him, and it doesn’t show as badly on her because she is still young and recovers much faster than he does.

@Janet I was mainly thinking of all his collaborations with Burton. His acting has felt really stale to me in the last decade so I definitely haven’t watched all of his films. I get that he has fans and I liked his earlier stuff but he just hasn’t been to my personal taste lately.

Oddly, some fan in some random forum recently found/posted a link to a website called instant marriage LA. They have a photo of the woman who officiates and Depp (bride is absent), claiming they did Depp/Heard’s wedding. He is dressed all in black, rather normal like, they are in someone’s living room. Seems it’s legal but it was done rather um, rushed and low key. I would’ve questioned mental status at that signing.

I think that is a really harsh judgment to make based on such little information. All we know about these people is what they talk about in interviews and red carpet appearances. We have no idea if she is enabling him, or if she is pleading with him everyday to go to rehab.
Agreed 100% Tiffany. The fact is that no one can make an addict go to rehab. Period. And I kind of resent the implication, my dad was a mess for decades, and there wasn’t any amount of begging, pleading , touch love or ultimatums that made him go. He DID eventually go, but I couldn’t tell you why. I had not spoken to him for 3 years by the time that happened.
Amber may be an awful person, we can’t know. Maybe she doesn’t care if he gets help. But for all those people out there that are standing by helpless while a loved one drinks themselves to death? I felt the need to pipe up and point out that even if Amber desperately wants him to get help, he has to decide on his own.

there’s video from the trip to Rio with his band where they are in the vehicle and you can see her pour a glass of wine and hand it to him, she’s not pleading with him to stop. If she truly cared about him, she would first stop forcing him to do more PR (meaning the appearances for her work) these things make he highly uncomfortable and she would be working to get him into rehab. And I’m sorry folks, I like Alice Cooper a lot but he claimed that everyone in the band is sober, he lied and he knows he lied, Depp was seen and photographed at functions with the sober band, drinking and Amber the Turd-heard was there also. If she’s not trying to help him then she doesn’t care. This has been coming for more than a year. This is my guess for the next celebrity tragedy, but I don’t think anyone will be surprised.

Honestly, he’s always looked rough. Always had deep dark circles, sallow skin, greasy hair, messy clothing, bad teeth. He’s always worn over accessorized outfits, lifts and make-up. He’s always been drunk at awards shows and was usually drunk or high on the red carpet at premieres. But up until maybe 10 years ago he was still breathtakingly attractive, so if anything his lifestyle just added to the allure. As he’s hit middle age his looks have slowly faded, and he’s gained a lot of weight. So now he looks like the drunk he’s always been.
He hasn’t really changed. In the 90’s he was known for being a drunk and to some extent a druggie, and during his time with Vanessa he didn’t clean up any, just hid away a lot. Now he’s out and about a lot more and his lifestyle has finally caught up with him, so people are noticing. But he’s always been like this.

It’s reported that Paradis tried to get him to stop, he stopped for a couple of years then fell off the wagon, he was repeatedly wasted in front of his children, she warned him clean it up or I’m leaving you. He didn’t and along comes Amber Heard and she says it’s ok if you want to do drugs, I’ll still love you.. Depp thinks she loves him and so he decides he loves her and that since she’ll let him keep over indulging to chill out his demons she must be his soulmate and now we are where we are. Heard’s been digging his grave and waiting until she can control everything he owns for the past 4 years. Yes, by most accounts this debacle has only been going on 4 years.

He’s in a band called The Hollywood Vampires. He’s a rocker. He loves his red wine. He’s got a little wine bloat and he’s 52. His appearance has always been the same. He’s just not as young and cute. Period.
His appearance has changed drastically – he has more than a little red wine bloat. He looks totally unhealthy, pale, waxy and sweaty – he’s gained at least 40 lbs. It’s clearly a combination of booze and coke, both of which he loved in his early days but it’s caught up to him now that he’s in his fifties. There are many male celebrities in their fifties who look just fine because….they’re healthy and fit.
Jaded. Google the clip of him accepting the Best Dramatic Actor People’s Choice award last night. He looked great. He was sober. He has a deviant sense of humor, e.g. “How was the beef”. I get him. Used to have a drink with him at Barnie’s Beanery back in the day. He’s unconventional and a rebel, but one of the most humble guys you will meet.
He really is a very sweet and beautiful person in RL. I wish I wouldn’t have clicked on this article now and will not click on anymore in the future. It bothers me to read such petty insults thrown at him. If he has a problem, let him and his family work it out.
He didn’t use to look anything like this. He gained alot of weight before teh last POC movie because they had to let his costume out numerous times during shooting. But the teeth – and those are his teeth – not for POC or any other character. I just read he has to wear teeth prosthetics for movies now adays. Don’t understand why he doesn’t get them fixed. Well i don’t think its her fault at all, but if its like you say then she is not the right person for a him. However much they may love each other. I can’t stand phony Amber, I don’t think she cares enough and she is also too smart to do anything. She has got her prize – she is both wealthy beyond belief and forever Mrs. Depp no matter what happens to him. If she intervenes there is a chance he will wake up and divorce her. If he is drunk, he is easily managed and it does not matter to her that he is a buffoon in public. And if he were to pass… Can you say golden opportunity? (I know, some of you will judge me harshly for this. I hope I am wrong, and that he will find his way and a measure of peace and happiness with or without her.)

I’m just not sure. It might be addiction, or it might be that he’s trying to party in his 50s like he did in his 20s. Hell I can’t even party in my 30s like I did in my 20s! He really isn’t looking great either way.
I love how the tabloids will do anything to pack famous names in their stories. It’s like; he leaned down to talk to Christian Bale and they…apparently had a nice conversation…but then!…oh my goodness then! 🙂

While I agree that he is not looking his best,I don’t think he was drunk/high during the gala.His speech was actually one of his most normal ones,and he was looking and speaked a lot better yesterday at People Choice Awards.Maybe he just doesn’t care anymore?It’s not like he ever cared about anything really.He is secured A lister,rich,famous with millions of fans…I wouldn’t be surprised if he just doesn’t care anymore.Still,I don’t know if something is in fact going on but I know that these mags would create a drama out of paint drying so I wouldn’t trust them completely.I do hope however that if he is in a bad situation people who love him will help him because he is so talented and such a nice,humble man and it’s sad seeing him in a dark place(if he really is).Best wishes to him either way.

As a preteen I was obsessed with Johnny Depp from his 21 Jumpstreet days. I had a page ripped from a magazine stuck inside the cover plastic sheet of my Trapper Keeper so I could gaze at him all day. I used to write out Mrs. Johnny Depp in cursive over and over again. So… This one hurts. He was so so so beautiful (and I even married a man with Johnny Depp cheekbones!). He looks lost, sad and bewildered. And Amber just looks smug. His poor family.

He’s been spiraling downward since he split with Vanessa. He’s gone off the rails and still hasn’t found a way to recover. Marrying Amber was just a reaction to that; I think he was trying to prove to himself and the world that he’s all better. He is such a gifted actor and used to be red hot. I hope he gets it together and gets his mojo back.

@Fanny – I agree that he was drinking heavily before he and Vanessa split. Actually, I think he was drinking because he was so miserable being with Vanessa at that point. Obviously Amber hasn’t helped his situation since he continues to appear ill at every appearance.
I’m sure Depp is surrounded by the usual yes clan that are also money hungry vultures. He probably has a dual addiction going on from his appearance. Like heroin and alcohol. This man does not deserve any negative publicity. He needs help very badly. The way he looks there is not a lot of time left to get it either.

Actually he did do some shoots with in Toronto. LA magazine used it. They were some of the worst photos I’ve ever seen, and I mean that technically speaking as well as how he is. They were too unexposed, odd angles, he’s using his hat to hide… that may have been the one. He also did a shoot for the band sometime last fall.

It does seem like he’s got an alcohol problem. But I’m also starting to wonder if there’s a medical issue too. Bloated, staggering … could he have a neurological issue? RA? something else? It seems possible. And he might be in denial about that, drinking more because of it or just letting the drinking stories cover up/hide medical issues. Who knows. One thing I do think is true is that Amber hasn’t really seemed to care about whatever the issues are and that’s not good.
I think she doesn’t fully understand what a mess he used to be, so probably she thinks it’s fine, and she is younger, I can see Johnny saying stuff like “I know what I am doing, everything is under control” when it is not. On the other side it’s not her job to keep him clean…
My husband and I were watching Life’s Too Short yesterday and we both were a little shocked to realize that Ricky Gervais now is way better looking than Johnny Depp. Wasn’t it Depp who always talked about how he didn’t want to be seen as ‘hot’ by the public? Maybe this is his way of rebelling against his past ‘sexy’ image. If this is the case he definitely should win an academy award ;-D
He and Amber were on “Overhaulin” and he was a mumbler on that show too. He is either on heroin or oxy or is suffering brain issues due to long term drug use. He is going the way of Ozzy Osburne.

I remember watching his Inside the Actors Studio and he was drinking wine during the filming. I was thinking, ‘ You can’t get through 2 hours of talking about yourself without a drink’.
It was not cool than and it looks like he needs help now.
I can’t claim to be a JD fan although I liked him in a few movies and thought he was incredibly beautiful. In his forties he could still pass for 25. This is just incredibly sad. I hope he doesn’t end up like his idol, Marlon.

Mess. What a mess. I’m all for imbibing but this looks like one hell of a mess gone way too far over the dark side. I hope he can pull himself back together and lead a better example for his two kids. As for Amber… i don’t even know whats going on there.
I remember when he had the Viper Lounge where River Phoenix died of a heroin overdose and I always..assumed, thought, imagined he was OK and not addicted to heroin. But, who would have thought that Philip Seymour Hoffman would die of a heroin overdose. My sense is Depp uses heroin. Signs symptoms: What do you think:?

JD’s appearance and sluggish, not to mention lack of hygiene could be indicators of depression. He seems like a gentle soul. JD still visits (as Jack Sparrow) the London hospital that saved Lilly Rose’s life to visit sick children. He is known for being kind to fans, writing autographs and always attends People’s Choice Award. JD may be self-medicating due to depression. I am so sad. He does have more than a few similarities to Brando. I just saw a documentary on Brando. He had terribly deep trust issues and absolutely hated people recognizing him in public.
JD is an eccentric slob. Always has been, prob always will be. Years ago…I’m talking YEARS ago, I remember reading an article about his teeth – he showed up on set and the director was like…ohhhh hell no! Somebody call a dentist! And they called one in, sat Johnny down and cleaned/whitened his teeth before they started the scene. My fantasy of him was tarnished after that, and since then, I’m never surprised to read about his lack of interest in his personal image. Well, that’s not entirely true…when he did the tourist with Jolie, I was surprised to see how much his face had changed – bloated. I didn’t think drugs or booze did it, I was thinking more along the lines of bad fillers, but heroin is a good suspect too. But whatever, he’s living the dream, right? You’d think Amber would be like – damn, daddy! You don’t look good.

Amber has looked kind of high lately too. Maybe it’s just her “come hither” look. Don’t know.
Zoom in and look at JD’s and Amber’s eyes. Think: what could make their eyes look like they do? Who will benefit if JD dies suddenly? Who benefits right now by not intervening? Are those around him more interested in keeping their pay checks going than helping him get it together? How long can JD continue in this physical state? Who are JD’s heroes and how did they end up? Is he emulating them? I already got miss Johnny Depp, and yet he is not really gone,….yet.
